Bangladesh name T20I squad for Pakistan series

DHAKA: Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named an unchanged squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Pakistan, starting July 20 at the Shere-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

The selectors have opted for continuity, retaining the same group of players that recently clinched a 2-1 series win over Sri Lanka on their home turf.

Explaining the decision, BCB’s Chairman of Cricket Operations, Najmul Abedeen Fahim, said the board is prioritising stability in the lead-up to the ICC T20 World Cup.

“It’s a different matter if changes are absolutely necessary, but till the World Cup, we want consistency and to avoid unnecessary experimentation,” Fahim stated.

“It’s important to have stability in the squad.”

Bangladesh sniff series victory as bad light forces an early closure on Day 4

RAWALPINDI: Bangladesh opener Zakir Hasan played a quick knock to put 42 runs on the board without a loss before bad light forced an early closure on Day 4 of the second Test against Pakistan.

Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam will resume their innings at 31 and nine respectively with Bangladesh needing 148 runs to sweep the series on Day 5.

Prior to that, Hasan Mahmud led the bowling attack with his maiden five-wicket haul to help Bangladesh bundle Pakistan for a meagre 172 in the second innings.

Salman Ali Agha remained Pakistan’s top-scorer with an unbeaten 47 from 71 balls, laced with seven boundaries and one six.

He added a crucial 27-run partnership with last man Mir Hamza (4), who became Hasan Mahmud’s fifth scalp.

Other than Hasan, Nahid Rana was the key bowler for Bangladesh with the figures of 4-44.

Pakistan lost Mohammad Rizwan early in the second session as he got caught behind off Hasan’s delivery. Rizwan scored a gutsy 43 off 73.

Mohammad Ali fell on the first ball, while Abrar managed to play 12 balls before Nahid Rana got rid of him, bringing Mir Hamza to the crease.

Earlier, Bangladesh pacers wreaked havoc in the first session, taking four key wickets to leave Pakistan reeling at 117-6 at Lunch on Day 4.

Mohammad Rizwan launched Pakistan’s recovery with an unbeaten 38 amidst a breathtaking spell of pace bowling by Bangladesh bowlers. Meanwhile, Salman Ali Agha was unbeaten at seven when the Lunch was called.

Saim Ayub and captain Shan Masood started the fourth day’s play with the scoreboard reading 9-2.

The two batters started positively with boundaries and regular intervals before Taskin Ahmed removed Saim after he had scored 20 off 35.

Shan soon followed his partner as he got caught behind off Nahid Rana. The Pakistan captain scored 28 runs from 34 balls.

Nahid dismissed Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel in his next two overs as Pakistan slipped to 81-6.

Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha then joined hands to help the team recover, with the former scoring the bulk of runs to avoid further damage before lunch.

Pakistan had lost opening batter Abdullah Shafique and nightwatchman Khurram Shahzad in the dying minutes of the third day.

Prior to that, Salman Ali Agha took the final two wickets, including top-scorer Litton Das, to book Bangladesh for 262.

Khurram led Pakistan’s bowling charts with figures of 6-90, while Mir Hamza and Salman bagged two each.

Litton scored a gutsy century as he singlehandedly Bangladesh’s total from 193 to 262, courtesy of a 69-run stand with Hassan Mehmud (13).

The wicketkeeper top-scored with 138 runs from 228 balls with the help of 13 boundaries and four sixes.

He was unbeaten at 83 as Bangladesh went to Tea with 193-8 on the board after dominating the second session against Pakistan.

Litton along with Mehidy Hasan Miraz helped Bangladesh recover from 26-6 as they stitched a partnership of 165 runs, scoring their individual half-centuries.

They attacked Pakistani bowlers and scored boundaries across all parts of the ground before Khurram caught and bowled Mehidy.

The all-rounder departed after scoring 78 runs from 124 balls with the help of twelve boundaries and one six. Meanwhile, Taskin Ahmed also fell to Khurram on the stroke of Tea on Day 3.

Earlier, Bangladesh openers Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan started the day with 10/0 on the board.

However, they could not add much to the total as Khurram Shahzad bowled a brilliant spell of classic pace bowling, leaving the Bangladesh batters completely bewildered.

In just the fourth over of the day, he took out Zakir with a skilful delivery on the last ball courtesy of an easy catch by Abrar Ahmed.

On the first ball of his next over, Khurram cleaned up Shadman with an inswinger. He missed the hat trick but he castled Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto in the same over.

Mir Hamza also joined the party as he dismissed Mominul Haque in the next over.

Bangladesh veterans Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan then fell prey to Mir and Khurram respectively with the scoreboard reading 26-6.

Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz showed resistance as they knitted a gutsy 49-run stand for the seventh wicket to push the team’s total to 75-6 runs at the end of the first session without further damage.

Earlier on Day 2, Bangladesh bowlers bowled out Pakistan on 274, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz leading the pack.

Mehidy was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with a five-fer, followed by Taskin Ahmed, who bagged three wickets. Nahid Rana and Shakib Al Hasan shared two wickets between them.

From Pakistan, Salman Ali Agha offered a notable fight against the momentum-filled Bangladesh bowling attack with his 54 off 95 deliveries, laced up with three fours and two sixes.

Prior to that, Pakistan found themselves in a state of bother when Taskin Ahmed cleaned up their right-handed opener Abdullah Shafique a duck with an in-dipper.

Following the early hiccup, Masood joined Ayub in the middle and launched an astounding recovery.

The pair batted sensibly against in-form Bangladesh bowlers with Masood leading the charge.

Masood scored 57 off 69 deliveries with the help of two boundaries, while Ayub played a 58-run knock which featured four fours and two sixes.

For the unversed, the opening day of the second Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh was called off due to persistent rain here on Friday.

Pakistan thrash Bangladesh in Women’s T20 WC warm-up clash

CAPE TOWN: Pakistan started their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 on a winning note with a comfortable six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the warm-up match here on Monday.

After opting to bat first, Bangladesh’s batting lineup could not live up to the expectation of their skipper as the side could pile up 101/7 in the set of 20 overs despite Shamima Sultan top-scoring with 36.

Bangladesh had a dismal start to their innings as they lost opener Salma Khatun (8) for a mere 13 runs in the fourth over.

Following this, Sobhana Mostary and Shamima stitched an important 38-run partnership for the second wicket before the former perished in the 10th over after scoring 18 off 21.

Shamima then put on a brief 20-run partnership with skipper Nigar Sultana (15) before eventually falling in the 14th over after scoring 36 off 41 deliveries and smashing three boundaries.

The rest of the Bangladesh batters remained clueless against disciplined Pakistan’s bowling attack as six of their batters failed to amass double figures.

Experienced all-rounder Nida Dar and Nashra Sandhu led the bowling attack for Pakistan with two wickets each, while Sadia Iqbal, Aiman Anwer and Tuba Hasan made one scalp each.

Set to chase a meagre 102, Pakistan comfortably clinched a confidence-boosting victory by six wickets and 24 balls to spare.

Skipper Bismah Maroof led from the front after a shaky start and remained the joint top-scorer for her side with Nida Dar as both scored 24.

Hard-hitting batter Ayesha Naseem then struck a quick 20 off just 10 balls to make sure Pakistan sail through in a dominant fashion.

The Green Shirts will now take South Africa in their next warm-up match on Wednesday before starting their main round campaign against arch-rivals India on Sunday (February 12).

T20 WC: Pakistan edge Bangladesh to get surprise semifinal entry

ADELAIDE: Pakistan came from behind to book the semifinal berth of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in an interesting turn of events on an action-filled Sunday as they beat Bangladesh by five wickets.

The two teams were competing for the semifinal spot in a virtual knockout game after Proteas had earlier faced an upset defeat at the hands of the Netherlands in the first fixture of Sunday’s tripleheader, which eliminated South Africa from the race for the final four.

Shaheen Afridi stormed through the lower middle order as he grabbed four wickets aiding Pakistan to restrict Bangladesh to 127/8.

Set to chase a meagre target, Pakistan batters held their nerves strong as the opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan raised a cautious 57-run partnership in 63 balls before young Mohammad Haris played a superb cameo of 18-ball 31 to steer Pakistan to a comfortable position in the chase.

Skipper Babar fell prey to left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed after scoring 25 off 33 in the 11th over while Rizwan (32 off 32) followed the suit and got caught at the point in the very next over when he tried to slash medium pacer, Ebadot Hussain.

Shan Masood, on the other hand, chipped in with a skilful unbeaten 24 off 14 to take the side home.

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh failed to post a big total on the board thanks to phenomenal death bowling by the Green Shirts who offered just 21 runs while taking four wickets in the last four overs of the innings.

Left-arm pacer Shaheen produced his best bowling figures since coming back from an injury in the tournament as he returned 4/22 in his four overs quota.

Opener Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored for his side as he played a cautious knock of 54 off 48 laced with seven boundaries while the Pakistan bowlers tested Bangladesh batting throughout the innings.

Shaheen provided the first breakthrough to Pakistan as he got rid of danger man Litton Das, who played a sensational knock in the previous game against India, in the third over after he scored 10 off 8.

Soumya Sarkar then joined Shanto on the crease and anchored the Bangladesh innings with a valiant 52- run partnership to take the scoreboard 73/1 in 10.2 overs before leg spinner Shadab Khan made back-to-back strikes to jolt the batting line.

Sarkar was taken at the point after he scored 20 off 17 while skipper Shakib Al Hasan walked back on golden duck after a confused leg before wicket while the third umpire also nodded to the onfield umpire’s decision.

Following the debacle, Bangladesh remained unable to control the damage as they started to lose wickets at regular intervals with the last five batters failing to reach the double figures.

For Pakistan, apart from Shaheen, Shadab pocketed two wickets while Haris Rauf and Iftikhar Ahmed also took a scalp each.

Babar, Rizwan reach 1000 mark in successful T20I run chases

CHRISTCHURCH: Pakistan’s dynamic opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan amassed yet another milestone in T20Is as the duo became the first to accumulate 1000 runs in successful run chases.

Babar and Rizwan put on a match-defining 101-run partnership while chasing 174 against Bangladesh in the ongoing T20I Tri-series.

Following their brilliant partnership, the duo has become the first to add 1000 runs in terms of partnership in successful T20I run chases.

Their 101-run partnership against Bangladesh today marked their fifth century-plus in run chases in T20Is.

The pair has put on eight century-plus partnerships overall in T20Is. They also have scored 16 fifty-plus partnerships.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan sank Bangladesh in a thriller by seven wickets with one ball to spare.

Wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan, who top-scored for the side with 69 off 56, adjudged the player of the match for his anchoring knock, while Babar scored 55 off 40.

Nawaz, openers star as Pakistan down Bangladesh in tri-series thriller

CHRISTCHURCH: Mohammad Rizwan and skipper Babar Azam starred with brilliant half-centuries before Mohammad Nawaz smashed an unbeaten 45 off 20 to help Pakistan beat Bangladesh by seven wickets in a thrilling penultimate game of the Tri-series, here on Thursday.

Set to chase a respectable target of  174, the reliable duo, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, laid the strong foundation with a centurion opening stand to put Pakistan in a commanding position.

Batting at no 4, Nawaz played a superb cameo as he struck five boundaries and a six to ensure that he took his side home after a slight jitter in the middle.

The Green Shirts were sailing comfortably to the target before medium pacer Hasan Mahmud struck twice in the 13th over to send set batter Babar Azam (55 off 40) and incoming Haider Ali (0) back to the pavilion.

Following this minor hassle, Rizwan then joined hands with Nawaz and built another valiant partnership of 64 runs for the fourth wicket to take Pakistan near the finishing line before he fell prey to part-timer Soumya Sarkar in the second last over.

Player of the match, Rizwan top-scored for the side as he played a courageous knock of 69 off 56, laced with four boundaries.

Earlier, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das scored magnificent half-centries as they stormed through the Pakistani bowling attack with a valiant 88-run partnership for the fourth wicket, helping their side to post a respectable total of 173/6.

Das starred with 69 off 42, laced with six fours and two sixes, while Shakib scored 68 off 42, including three sixes and seven fours, as the pair anchored  Bangladesh’s batting after they slipped to 41/2 in the 6th over.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Bangladesh had a dismal start to their innings as opener Sarkar fell cheaply on 4 in the third over by pacer Naseem Shah before Mohammad Wasim got rid of Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Shakib then combined excellently with Das as they moved the scoreboard at an impressive speed in the middle overs and took the total to 129 in the 15th over before the latter was removed by Nawaz while hitting big.

Green Shirts, however, made a comeback in the death overs offering just 12 runs while picking three wickets in the last two overs.

For Pakistan, Naseem and Wasim bagged two wickets each while Nawaz took a scalp.

Women’s WC: Sidra’s century goes in vain as Bangladesh stun Pakistan

HAMILTON: Pakistan’s opener Sidra Ameen’s century went in vain as Bangladesh stunned Pakistan by nine runs in the 12th match of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup, here on Monday.

Set to chase 235, Pakistan was cruising at 155/1 at one stage but, a match-defining collapse halted them to 225/9 in the allotted 50 overs.

In the run chase, Pakistan were off to a brilliant start as the openers Nahid Khan and Sidra provided a solid 91-runs partnership for the first wicket.

The pair appeared firm and was scoring sensibly until Nahida lost her wicket to Rumana Ahmed, who castled the former for 43. She faced 67 balls and hit three boundaries.

Pakistan’s skipper Bismah Maroof then joined Sidra at the crease and they also partnered strongly and piled 64 runs for the second-wicket partnership before Bismah made her way back to the pavilion. She scored 31 off 48 deliveries.

Bismah’s dismissal triggered a collapse and Pakistan slipped from 155/1 to 188/7 as the centurion Sidra also lost her wicket as she got run out. She top-scored with 104 off 140 balls; smashing eight boundaries.

The tail then resisted a bit but remained unable to steer the side to the victory as Bangladesh’s bowling unit restricted the green shirts at 225/9 in the allotted 50 overs.

For Bangladesh, Fahima Khatun shone with three wickets, while Rumana claimed two. Salma Khatun and Jahanara Alam on the other hand struck out a batter each.

Batting first, Bangladesh managed to post a commendable 234/7 in their allotted quota of overs, thanks to the brilliant knock of Fargana Hoque, who scored a brilliant 71 off 115 deliveries to anchor the innings.

The opener Sharmin Akhter and the skipper Nigar Sultana also chipped in as they scored 44 and 46 each. Whereas, the rest of the batters also made small contributions to take their side to 234/7 in 50 overs.

For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu led the way with three wickets, while Omaima Sohail, Nida Dar, and Fatima Sana made one scalp each.
