Tom Curran copped four-match ban in BBL for intimidating umpire

England and Sydney Sixers all-rounder Tom Curran has been handed a four-match ban for intimidating an umpire before a Big Bash League (BBL) 2023/24 game, the team said on Thursday.

The 28-year-old England international was charged with a “Level 3” offence under the Cricket Australia (CA) Code of Conduct for his altercation with the official during a practice session ahead of the Sixers’ clash with the Hobart Hurricanes on December 11 in Launceston.

Tom Curran was found guilty of the offence at a hearing and Sydney Sixers head Rachael Haynes said the team and the player would “vigorously appeal” the sanction.

CA said Tom Curran completed a practice run-up in which he ran onto part of the pitch and was instructed by the umpire not to.

He moved to the opposite end to complete another practice run-up but the umpire took a position next to the stumps, blocking the player from approaching the pitch.

“[Tom] Curran was seen in the footage gesturing to the umpire to move away
 He then attempted to perform a practice run up and run at pace straight towards the umpire who stood in the bowling crease facing Curran,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

“The umpire stepped to his right to avoid the risk of collision.”

Tom Curran will be unavailable for matches against Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Stars, Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat.

However, the right-arm pacer and his BBL franchise will file a formal appeal against the decision.

“Tom and the club maintain that Tom did not knowingly or intentionally intimidate a match official, and on legal advice, we will exercise our right to appeal the decision,” Head of Sydney Sixers Rachael Haynes said.

“We will support Tom during this period and look forward to him returning to the field.”

Haris Rauf, Usama Mir and Zaman Khan granted NOCs for BBL 2023-24

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued no-objection certificates (NOC) to fast bowlers Haris Rauf, Zaman Khan and leg-spinner Usama Mir for the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24.

The board has issued the NOCs considering the workload of players and the future tour programme of the national men’s team.

The PCB understands that this decision is in the best interests of all the stakeholders involved while balancing the importance of game time with workload management.

Haris Rauf and Usama Mir have been granted NOCs for a total of five matches whereas Zaman Khan has been granted NOC for four matches.

All these games are set to take place from 7 to 28 December.

Haris Rauf and Usama Mir are part of the Melbourne Stars squad, while Zaman Khan is part of Sydney Thunder in the BBL.

Haris Rauf has been representing Stars since 2019 and has picked 30 wickets from 18 games in BBL at an impressive average of 16.4.

England star Harry Brook pulls out of Big Bash League

Hard-hitting England batter Harry Brook on Thursday pulled out of playing in the Big Bash League (BBL) this season with the Melbourne Stars due to workload concerns.

Brook signed on for the Twenty20 tournament in September and was set to join the Stars for seven games after England’s tour of the West Indies in December.

“Naturally we’re disappointed that Harry [Brook] has withdrawn from the BBL, but we understand his decision with his increased workload,” Stars general manager Blair Crouch said in a statement.

“Given Harry was set to miss the opening 3 matches, the club had already signed a replacement player for that period.

“Currently the coaching staff and list management team are discussing options for the remainder of the tournament and we look forward to announcing those signings once they have been finalised.”

“We obviously rate Harry extremely highly and we would have loved to have seen him at the MCG alongside Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis this summer.”

Harry Brook’s withdrawal comes just three weeks before the 13th BBL season starts, with the Stars facing Brisbane Heat at the Gabba first up.

Three Pakistan players roped in for BBL 13

The upcoming edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023 will feature three Pakistan players Haris Rauf, Usama Mir and Zaman Khan.

The players’ draft for the upcoming 13th edition of the BBL took place on Sunday, September 2.

Haris Rauf, who rose to fame following his sensational stint with Melbourne Stars in the ninth edition of the BBL — taking 20 wickets in 10 matches at 19.4 including a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul — has rejoined the franchise for the upcoming edition.

Joining Haris Rauf at Melbourne Stars is his Pakistan teammate Usama Mir, fresh from a breakout English domestic season amid which he took 25 wickets at 18 across 17 T20 Blast and The Hundred matches.

Notably, Usama Mir is yet to make his T20I debut for Pakistan but has represented the country in eight ODIs and took 11 wickets in the longer format.

He, alongside Haris Rauf, is part of the Pakistan squad for the ongoing ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023.

Another Pakistan pacer Zaman Khan was roped in by Sydney Thunder in the Gold category.

Zaman has emerged as a death-over specialist in his prevailing domestic and franchise career.

He also made his international debut for Pakistan in an away three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in March this year and went on to play six matches and pick four wickets at 32.5.

Zaman Khan recently represented the Toronto Nationals in Global T20 Canada and Manchester Originals in The Hundred.

It is pertinent to mention that the upcoming 13th edition of the BBL will commence on December 7 with Haris Rauf and Usama Mir’s Melbourne Stars taking on last season’s runners-up Brisbane Heat in the curtain raiser while the final of the extravaganza will take place on January 2024.

Scorchers beat Heat to win fifth Big Bash League title

PERTH: Teenager Cooper Connolly’s big hitting at the death and skipper Ashton Turner’s heroic 53 saw Perth Scorchers beat Brisbane Heat to win an unprecedented fifth Twenty20 Big Bash League title on Saturday.

Their fireworks propelled them to 178-5 and a nail-biting five-wicket win with four balls left in front of a record 53,886 parochial fans at Perth Stadium after Brisbane put on 175-7.

It was a successful title defence by a side who beat the Sydney Sixers in last season’s decider, with Saturday’s win securing a fifth trophy in only the competition’s 12th year.

“It’s a surreal feeling. I’ve played a lot of games of cricket but you never know how it will pan out,” said man-of-the-match Turner after his 32-ball knock.

“We are in rarified air at the moment, we have a lot of guys in form and that’s not always the case. A lot of guys have contributed to wins throughout the season.”

A victory looked highly unlikely when Turner was run out after a horror mix-up with Nick Hobson, leaving them needing 39 needed off 19 balls.

But young gun Connolly smashed 25 off 11 balls to turn the game on its head.

He crunched 18 of those from a James Bazley over to leave them needing 20 off the final 12 balls.

Hobson then smashed a huge six followed by a no-ball five in the last over to secure the victory.

“At 19 (years old) to have this crowd cheer for me, couldn’t have asked for anything better. It’s a dream come true,” said left-hander Connolly. “I had full confidence in myself.”

The clash culminated a season marked by thrilling finishes, controversial moments, outstanding individual performances, and more than one million fans through the turnstiles.

Perth earned home-ground advantage after finishing on top of the regular season table, then knocking off the Sixers in a qualifying match last weekend.

The Heat only finished fifth and had to come through three knockout games, all away from home, to reach the final.

Both teams were depleted with the Heat’s Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Matt Renshaw and Mitchell Swepson all departing earlier this week for Australia’s tour of India.

The Scorchers were without fast bowler Lance Morris and teammate Ashton Agar who are also preparing for the four-Test Border-Gavaskar series starting on Thursday in Nagpur.

Heat skipper Jimmy Peirson won the toss and batted first with Josh Brown coming out with all guns blazing, smacking 25 off the opening 11 balls.

But his luck soon ran out and after the opening barrage, the Scorchers restricted Brisbane to 86-1 by the halfway mark.

Jason Behrendorff removed Sam Heazlett for 34, snapping a dangerous 79-run stand with Nathan McSweeney, then Peirson for three in the same over.

McSweeney fell for 41 before Max Bryant smashed an aggressive 31 from 14 balls to ensure a handy total.

In reply, Scorchers opener Stephen Eskinazi made a brisk 21 before a schoolboy run out, then Michael Neser clung on to a high catch to remove Cameron Bancroft for 15.

When Aaron Hardie went for 17 in the following over, they were wobbling at 54-3.

But Turner and Josh Inglis put on a high-quality 80 in 52 balls before Connolly and Hobson sealed the win.

Turner’s magic powers Scorchers into BBL Final

PERTH: Perth Scorchers’ skipper Ashton Turner played a scintillating 87-run knock in the run chase to steer his side to thump Sydney Sixers and into the final of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL).

Set to chase 152, Turner led from the front after his side’s dismal start as he stitched an astounding partnership with opener Cameron Bancroft and led his team to triumph.

Earlier, the Scorchers were off to a shaky start as the home side were 22/3 in four overs with Stephen Eskinazi (4), Aaron Hardie (9) and Josh Inglish (0) failing to chip in.

Following the slump, Turner turned the game on its head with his belligerent hitting and put on an unbeaten partnership with Bancroft, who anchored the stand with a gritty half-century.

Turner top-scored for her side with 84 off just 47 deliveries, hitting nine boundaries and a six.

Bancroft, on the other hand, was also impressive with his 45-ball 54 that featured six boundaries.

Sean Abbott remained the only successful bowler for the Sixers with his brilliant figures of 3/25 as the rest went wicketless.

After opting to bat first, the Sixers could raise 151/8 in their set of overs despite a brilliant half-century by skipper Moises Henriques.

Henriques top-scored for his side with 58 off 43 balls and smashed three fours and as many sixes and also put on an incredible fourth-wicket partnership with Jordan Silk, who fell three short of his half-century.

Silk scored 47 off 34 deliveries and smashed four boundaries including a six.

Besides the duo, no Sixers batter could make significant contributions with only two of them amassing double figures.

David Payne led the bowling attack for the Scorchers with 3/33 while Jason Behrendorff followed with 2/17. Aaron Hardie and Andrew Tye struck a wicket each.

MELBOURNE: The ongoing Big Bash League marked another eventful incident as two Melbourne Stars’ batters Joe Clarke and Beau Webster hit bizarre roof-hitting sixes in the derby against city Rivals Melbourne Renegades here on Saturday.

Citing the hot conditions here, the much-anticipated Melbourne derby was held with the roof of the famous Dockland Stadium closed, which led to the ball hitting it twice.

In the third over of the Star’s innings, Renegades pacer Will Sutherland bowled in a fuller delivery to Clarke, who looked to drill it over the mid-wicket boundary but ended up launching it upwards, which, consequently hit the roof of the stadium and landed inside the 30-yard circle.

Taking to Twitter, Cricket Australia (CA) shared the footage of the bizarre six and confirmed it as a six in the rules book.

“IT’S HIT THE ROOF!!! Lucky or not, it’s [six] in the book!” wrote Cricket Australia.

 

The incident then happened again in the 16th over of the innings when Webster punched Tom Rodgers’ delivery onto the roof and the umpire once again signalled it as a maximum despite the ball landing just beside the pitch.

 

It is pertinent to mention that despite the Stars’ two lucky sixes Renegades made an astounding comeback to snatch a thrilling six-run victory to win the BBL Melbourne Derby.

BBL: Sydney Thunder record lowest-ever T20 total

SYDNEY: The Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Sydney Thunder bagged an unwanted record as the team bundled out for the lowest-ever total in the history of T20 cricket.

The Thunder, in their BBL fixture against Adelaide Strikers, saw their batting lineup crumble as the side bundled out for just 15 runs.

Set to chase 140, none of the Thunder batters could amass a double-figure mark despite having the likes of Rilee Rossouw and Alex Hales in their lineup.

The Thunder’s dismal total of 15 is now the lowest-ever total in T20 cricket, dethroning Turkey’s 21 against the Czech Republic in the unwanted list.

The Strikers’ pacers Henry Thornton and Wes Agar played the key role in the Thunder’s misery as they bagged nine wickets combined for just nine runs.

Thornton returned with astounding bowling figures of 5/3, while Agar picked four wickets for just six runs.

Following their dismal batting performance, the Thunder endured a crushing 124-run defeat.

Hobart Hurricanes pick Shadab, Asif and Faheem for BBL 2022-23

MELBOURNE: Australia’s marquee T20 event Big Bash League’s (BBL) franchise Hobart Hurricanes picked Shadab Khan, Asif Ali and Faheem Ashraf for the upcoming edition of the tournament. 

According to the details, the Hurricanes picked the three Pakistan cricketers in the inaugural BigBash drafts held on Saturday.

“Really, really exciting times for us,” said Hurricanes’ head of strategy Ricky Ponting while he announed his top picks of the night as they went for legspinner Shadab as their platinum pick before taking Asif and Faheem.

“He’s (Shadab) a high class international leg-spinner, very handy with the bat as well, he’s a gun in the field, so we think we’re bringing in a three dimensional cricketer into our sport.” said Ponting.

Shadab has also represented the Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers in the previous editions of the BBL.

It is pertinent to mention here that the forthcoming season of BBL will commence from December 13.

PCB to deny players NOC for BBL participation: Reports

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided to deny no-objection certificates (NOCs) to Pakistan players from participating in the Big Bash League (BBL), ESPN Cricinfo reported.

According to the reports, the PCB has decided to refuse Pakistan players – contracted or not contracted – from participating in the forthcoming BBL reportedly due to a packed cricketing calendar ahead.

The cricket board, on the other hand, has not clarified whether it will allow its players to compete in the UAE’s International T20 League and Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) league.

It is worth noting that there was no Pakistani player among the 98 overseas players who entered the BBL Draft. However, there were speculations that the big names would put themselves up before the deadline.

Similarly, no Pakistani player has signed up for the UAE’s cash-rich ILT20, despite rumours that national players will be given major contracts.
