Lahore Qalandars’ David Wiese set to miss PSL 11

Lahore Qalandars on Monday confirmed that experienced all-rounder David Wiese will not take part in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11 due to unforeseen circumstances and important family commitments.

The franchise, in an official statement, said it fully respects Wiese’s decision to prioritise his family and expressed hope that the veteran will return in future editions of the league.

Wiese has been associated with Lahore Qalandars for the past seven seasons, building a strong bond with the franchise and its fanbase.

The South African-born all-rounder has played a key role in the Qalandars’ rise in the PSL, contributing with both bat and ball and also serving as a senior figure within the team’s leadership group.

The Qalandars highlighted Wiese’s calmness under pressure and his mentorship of younger players as major factors behind his long-standing importance to the side.

“David has been an integral part of the Lahore Qalandars family and our leadership group for many years. His contributions extend far beyond on-field performances,” Lahore Qalandars owner Sameen Rana said.

“Being part of Lahore Qalandars has been more than just cricket; it’s been a family,” Wiese said.

“The brotherhood within the team, the positive and supportive environment, and the passion everyone brings every day make this franchise truly special,” he added.

The all-rounder also said the respect he received from the Qalandars camp and fans, including being affectionately called ‘Murshad,’ is something he will always cherish, while reaffirming his intention to return in the coming seasons.

“I’m proud to have been part of a group that values teamwork, growth, and the spirit of the game, and I look forward to returning and contributing to the team’s journey in the seasons ahead,” Wiese concluded.

All-round Wiese lifts Bangla Tigers Mississauga to down Surrey Jaguars

BRAMPTON: David Wiese backed his economical bowling figures of 2/17 with a quickfire cameo and steered Bangla Tigers Mississauga to a four-wicket victory over Surrey Jaguars in the 10th match of the GT20 Canada 2024 here on Wednesday.

Surrey Jaguars’ captain Marcus Stoinis’ decision to bat first after winning the coin toss did not turn out beneficial as his side was bundled out on a modest 101 in 19.5 overs.

The Jaguars, after having a disastrous start, lost wickets at an alarming rate and were consequently reduced to 46/8 in 10 overs.

Following the slump, Stoinis was joined by Logan van Beek and together they offered some resistance against the red-hot Tigers’ bowling unit.

The duo added 29 runs for the ninth wicket before Shakib Al Hasan finally drew curtains on Stoinis’ gutsy knock in the 16th over.

Marcus Stoinis remained the top-scorer for the Jaguars with a 29-ball 36 which featured five boundaries.

Meanwhile, van Beek continued to fight until he was dismissed by Dilon Heyliger on the penultimate delivery of the innings.

He remained a notable run-getter for the Jaguars with a cautious 31 off 37 deliveries, hitting two fours and a six.

Shoriful Islam was the pick of the bowlers for Bangla Tigers Mississauga, picking up three wickets, followed by David Wiese and Shakib, who bagged two apiece.

Despite chasing a modest 102-run total, the Tigers had to make hard yards to claim the victory as they lost six wickets in the process and did so with just six balls to spare.

The Tigers too, had a dismal start to their innings as they had lost half of their side with just 45 runs on the board in 11.4 overs.

Iftikhar Ahmed then partnered with Wiese for an important 28-run partnership, that lasted with the former’s dismissal in the 16th over. He made a scratchy 13 off 21 deliveries.

Following Iftikhar’s dismissal, Wiese switched gears powered the Tigers to an important victory.

He was supported by Heyliger, who made 17 not out from 12 balls. Wiese remained the top-scorer for the Tigers with an unbeaten 27 off 19 deliveries, laced up with one four and two sixes.

Sunil Narine starred with the ball for the Jaguars with his three wickets while Stoinis, van Beek and Ben Lister made one scalp each.

The four-wicket victory lifted Bangla Tigers Mississauga to the second in the GT20 standings with six points in four matches while remained fourth with two points in three matches.

David Wiese bids farewell to international cricket

Namibia’s star all-rounder David Wiese, who also represented South Africa, has announced retirement from international cricket following his side’s loss against England in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday.

In his last match, the veteran all-rounder bagged one wicket and scored a blistering 27 off 12 deliveries, featuring two boundaries and two sixes. However, he could not get his team across the line as Namibia lost the 10-over clash by 41 runs.

“I mean, [the next] T20 World Cup is still two years away, I’m 39 years old now, so, in terms of international cricket, I don’t know if there’s much left in me,” Wiese said in the post-match press conference.

“Obviously, I [would] still like to play the game for a couple more years, I feel like I’ve still got a lot to contribute and a lot to play.

“But I just feel like what better place to end a special career for me personally with Namibia. I’ve had a lot of good times with them and to play my last game for them possibly at a World Cup against a world-class team like England, it just seemed like the right time.”

Weise started his international career with South Africa during a T20I against Sri Lanka in 2013.

He represented South Africa in white-ball cricket from 2013 to 2016 before making himself unavailable to play county cricket for the English county Sussex.

He was also part of South Africa’s squad in T20 World Cup 2016 in India, where the Proteas were knocked out in the Super 10 stage.

He played 20 T20Is and six ODIs for South Africa, scoring a total of 194 runs and taking 33 wickets across both formats.

Following a five-year break, he returned to international cricket after being selected in Namibia’s squad ahead of their first-ever T20 World Cup campaign in 2021.

The pace-bowling all-rounder played his first game for Namibia against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup.

The marquee event, jointly hosted by the UAE and Oman, witnessed the resurgence of Wiese as he led Namibia to their first victory in the tournament against the Netherlands.

He helped his side chase a 165-run target with an unbeaten 66 off 40.

The veteran all-rounder had a brilliant tournament as he finished as the sixth-highest run-scorer with 227 runs from eight games, including an unbeaten 43 in a losing cause against Pakistan. He also picked six wickets.

He remained an integral part of the Namibian side since then, playing nine ODI and 34 T20I matches for the country. He scored 760 runs across two formats and picked 41 wickets.
