Karachi express Rizwanullah makes his mark on PSL platform

Karachi express Rizwanullah makes his mark on PSL platform

The sun was blazing as the Karachi Kings squad went through its preparations ahead of the Pakistan Super League’s 10th season in Karachi. Near the boundary that separates the media from the players, a tall, strapping youngster approached me. He seemed certain I could help him get a step closer to the action.

With quiet confidence, he introduced himself and spoke from the heart.

“I want to bowl to David Warner and others in the nets,” Rizwanullah said, with the conviction of a genuine fast bowler. “I have come from far-flung Landhi and want to make a name for myself in cricket.”

I reached out through my contacts and returned to the young net bowler with good news—his wish would be granted the very next day. True to his word, he arrived early, long before others, and spent the day doing exactly what he had dreamed of. What stood out immediately was his determination—and the raw pace he generated.

By the end of the season, Rizwanullah had already caught the attention of Karachi Kings’ assistant coach Masroor Ahmed, whose sharp eye for talent had once again delivered. During the off-season, Masroor invited him to train across various venues, working on his lengths, speed, and variations.

When the PSL auction came around in February, Rizwanullah’s name appeared on the list—and he was picked by Karachi Kings as an emerging player. His journey, from net bowler to franchise cricketer, remains one of the most inspiring pathways in modern cricket.

Such transitions demand resilience, discipline, and the ability to seize opportunities when they arrive.

Cricket history offers several examples. West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph famously impressed Australian coach Justin Langer during a net session in the Caribbean. India’s T Natarajan is another modern-day story of rise—from obscurity to international recognition through sheer persistence.

Karachi Kings, too, have previously unearthed talent such as Mushtaq Kalhoro and Fawad Ali. So when Rizwanullah was promoted to the main squad, there was both excitement and expectation.

Masroor Ahmed himself was optimistic.

“I watched him in a local match and was impressed by his pace and control. I invited him to Karachi Kings’ training sessions and worked on refining his strengths and weaknesses,” he said.

Before his PSL induction, Rizwanullah had made his T20 debut for Karachi Whites in the National T20 2026, though he managed just one wicket in two matches. In his debut outing, he bowled a solitary over, conceding just six runs.

Soon after his elevation, Rizwanullah expressed his joy at joining the Karachi Kings setup for PSL 11.

“Everyone was very welcoming. They gave me the kind of support a young player needs. I knew I would get a chance, so I stayed ready and waited with full focus,” he said.

His opportunity finally came in Lahore against the Qalandars, where he was handed his Karachi Kings debut cap. Nerves did not seem to trouble him. Although his three overs went for 41 runs, he picked up a key wicket—Abdullah Shafique—in a five-wicket victory for his side.

Showing quick learning and composure, he bounced back strongly in his second outing, returning figures of 2 for 28 against Quetta Gladiators, dismissing in-form batters Saud Shakeel and Hasan Nawaz.

“It’s a dream come true for me,” Rizwanullah said. “The first experience has been a positive one. I will work even harder so that in the next PSL I can get more chances and take more wickets. My aim is to play a leading role in helping my team win the trophy, In Shaa Allah.”

David Warner flags Karachi Kings snub in PSL 11 Team of the Tournament

David Warner has raised concerns over the absence of Karachi Kings players in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 Team of the Tournament, following the official announcement by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The governing body unveiled a 12-player lineup on Monday, with Babar Azam named captain after leading Peshawar Zalmi to the title with a standout season both as a batter and leader.

The selected squad included three players each from Zalmi and runners-up Hyderabad Kingsmen, while Lahore Qalandars and Islamabad United had two representatives each.

Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators secured one spot apiece.

However, the complete omission of players from Karachi Kings and Rawalpindiz drew attention, particularly from the Kings’ captain, David Warner, who reacted to the announcement on social media.

Commenting on the league’s official post, the former Australian opener questioned the selection, writing: “Where is Karachi players.”

Notably, Warner himself enjoyed a productive campaign, finishing as Karachi’s leading run-scorer with 256 runs in seven matches at an impressive strike-rate of 147.97, including three half-centuries.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Hasan Ali was among the standout performers with the ball, claiming 15 wickets in nine appearances and featuring among the tournament’s leading wicket-takers.

The Team of the Tournament was finalised by a five-member panel comprising members of the commentary group, who also selected an Emerging Team to recognise rising talent from the competition.

Iftikhar Ahmed reacts to Peshawar Zalmi’s PSL 11 title win

LAHORE: Peshawar Zalmi all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed credited team management after lifting the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 trophy.

Zalmi chased down a partly 130 in 15.3 overs, thanks to Hardie’s unbeaten half-century.

The highlight of the match was a decisive 85-run partnership between Abdul Samad and Aaron Hadie. He scored a brisk 48 off 34 deliveries, including four sixes, before falling in the 15th over.

This ends a nine-year wait for Zalmi since their maiden triumph in 2017. The victory also marked the first major trophy as captain for star batter Babar Azam.

Speaking after the match, Iftikhar recalled the 2017 edition while praising the team’s effort after a strong all-round performance in the final.

“I was there in 2017 as well and at that time we had a very strong team. This time I think the team that has been built is excellent,” he said.

He credited the team management for assembling a winning combination, highlighting the depth in Zalmi’s squad.

“In my opinion, the credit goes to the team owners and management for the way they have created the combination. We have fast bowlers, strong middle-order batters, a solid top order, and finishers as well,” he said.

The 35-year-old further said that when a squad has such a balance and all key areas are covered, the chances of qualifying and winning the title are very high.

“When you have such balance in your squad and all your key areas are covered, your chances of qualifying and becoming champions are very high. That is why this time we have a strong chance to win the trophy,” the all-rounder concluded.

Babar Azam misses out on breaking all-time PSL record

LAHORE: Peshawar Zalmi skipper Babar Azam fell just short of breaking Fakhar Zaman’s all-time record for most runs in a single edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The right-hander was caught on the first ball he faced under lights at the Gaddafi Stadium, attempting a cut shot off a wider delivery from Mohammad Ali.

Before coming into the fixture, his score was tied with Zaman’s tally of 588 runs, recorded in 2022.

Most runs in a PSL season:

Babar Azam (Peshawar Zalmi) – 588 runs in 2026
Fakhar Zaman (Lahore Qalandars) – 588 runs in 2022
Babar Azam (Peshawar Zalmi) – 569 runs in 2024
Babar Azam (Karachi Kings) – 554 runs in 2021
Mohammad Rizwan (Multan Sultans) – 550 runs in 2023
Mohammad Rizwan (Multan Sultans) – 546 runs in 2022
Kusal Mendis (Peshawar Zalmi) – 550* runs in 2026
Babar Azam (Peshawar Zalmi) – 522 runs in 2023
Mohammad Rizwan (Multan Sultans) – 500 runs in 2021

Nonetheless, Babar remained in supreme form during PSL 11, amassing 588 runs in 11 matches at an average of 73.50, including two centuries and three fifties.

Furthermore, the 31-year-old player matched two major records in this edition of the tournament with a blazing century against Islamabad United during the Qualifier.

Babar Azam top-scored with an explosive 103 off just 59 balls, including 12 fours and four sixes, which helped his team set a formidable total of 221-7 in 20 overs.

His 57-ball century — second of the tournament, made him the second player to achieve this milestone, joining Usman Khan, who recorded the feat in PSL 9.

Captain Babar wins first major trophy as Peshawar Zalmi lift PSL 11 title

LAHORE: Skipper Babar Azam ended his wait for a first major title as Peshawar Zalmi crushed Hyderabad Kingsmen in the final of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11.

Zalmi chased down a partly 130 in 15.3 overs, thanks to Hardie’s unbeaten half-century.

This ends a nine-year wait for Zalmi since their maiden triumph in 2017. The victory also marked the first major trophy as captain for star batter Babar Azam.

The innings got off to a disastrous start as Mohammad Haris (6) and skipper Babar Azam (0) fell in the opening over to Mohammad Ali, leaving Zalmi reeling.

Hardie then steadied the chase alongside Kusal Mendis (9) before further setbacks saw Zalmi slump to 40/4 after Michael Bracewell (4) was dismissed by Akif Javed.

With pressure mounting, Hardie combined with Abdul Samad in a decisive 85-run partnership that turned the match in Zalmi’s favour. Samad scored a brisk 48 off 34 deliveries, including four sixes, before falling in the 15th over.

Hardie, however, remained composed and guided the chase to completion with an unbeaten 56 off 39 balls, striking nine boundaries to seal a memorable victory in the Pakistan Super League final.

Mohammad Ali was the standout bowler for Hyderabad Kingsmen with figures of 3/38, while Hunain Shah and Akif Javed took one wicket each.

Babar Azam responds to Hafeez’s ‘advertised superstars’ remark

Babar Azam responds to Hafeez’s ‘advertised superstars’ remark

Pakistan ace batter Babar Azam has responded to remarks by former all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez about players performing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Hafeez previously criticized the hype surrounding players performing in PSL, suggesting that the cycle of promotion and star-driven continues without genuine change in content or direction.

“The whistles will blow again — the stage will be set once more — the advertised superstars will come out — because our foundation is the PSL,” Hafeez had said during the T20 World Cup 2026 transmission.

Speaking on “Off Topic Podcast”, Babar said that Hafeez’s statement was his personal mindset.

“I can’t say anything about this because it is Mohammad Hafeez’s own mindset,” he said.

The 31-year-old emphasized that PSL is significant for players when representing a franchise, while the approach remains competitive.

“PSL is one of the best leagues in Pakistan, and every player gives their best. It’s not like you play differently when you are in the Pakistan team. However, this is franchise cricket, and entertainment plays a bigger role here,” he continued.

He explained that team combinations and player distribution in franchise cricket make consistent performances difficult, saying that Mohammad Hafeez’s remarks were likely meant differently.

“In the Pakistan team, you always try to ensure that all 11 players perform. But in the PSL, players are divided into different teams. If someone is your best player, he might perform in one out of 10 matches,” Babar said.

“That’s why Hafeez’s way of saying it was different. How people interpret it is a different matter.”

Peshawar Zalmi captain pointed out that the ongoing PSL season has seen emerging and overseas players dominate performances, while highlighting Sahibzada Farhan’s consistency.

“If you look at PSL 11, most of the performers are youngsters or foreign players. The same players are not performing, although Sahibzada Farhan has maintained his form. There are always new faces, and every season brings new players — this process will continue.”

“Hafeez’s way of saying it was different, but people understood it differently,” Babar concluded.
