Joao Felix says late Jota ‘will forever be part of football history’

Joao Felix said on Monday that Portugal team-mate and close friend Diogo Jota will “forever be a part of football history” following the Liverpool star’s death aged 28.

Jota was killed along with his brother Andre Silva when their Lamborghini went off the road in northern Spain on July 3.

Just 11 days prior to the accident, the Portuguese forward had married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children.

The Premier League remembered Jota over the weekend in a series of moving tributes.

Adding his voice to the outpouring of grief across the football world, Felix looked visibly moved as he spoke about his good friend and international colleague.

Felix, who was among the mourners at the brothers’ funeral, said: “Diogo to me was one of my best friends in the national team, he was always part of our mini group in the national team, those of us who were always together.

“I knew his family, especially his parents, an incredible family.”

Speaking in Hong Kong, where Joao Felix is with his new team, Al Nassr, for this week’s Saudi Super Cup, the 25-year-old added: “I think he will forever be a part of football history, he will remain in the hearts of those who were already close to him.

“After that day, every time we go on the field, we will remember him and play in part for him.”

The attacker Felix joined fellow Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr late last month, moving from Chelsea in a reported deal worth up to 43.7 million pounds ($58 million).

Felix, who has also played for Benfica, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, and AC Milan, will reportedly earn $10 million per year.

Liverpool to remember Diogo Jota with permanent tribute

Liverpool are to create a permanent tribute to remember former player Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who died in a car crash earlier this month, the Premier League champions announced on Saturday.

Father of three Jota died alongside his brother on July 3, 11 days after marrying his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, after their car came off the road and burst into flames in northern Spain.

A large number of tributes in the shape of flowers, scarves, cards, and jerseys have been left at Anfield, which Liverpool said would form the basis for the permanent monument.

“The thousands of physical tributes outside Anfield have been gradually removed over the course of the last week and carefully separated and safely stored,” the club said in a statement.

“Floral tributes will then be composted and used in flower beds across all club sites, including Anfield, the AXA Training Centre, and AXA Melwood Training Centre.

“The remaining artefacts will be recycled by a specialist company and used to help create a permanent memorial sculpture that will become a future focal point of remembrance at Anfield.”

The club also said that players will have a “Forever 20” emblem – referencing Jota’s now-retired shirt number printed on their shirts and stadium jackets for the season.

“When LFC’s new kits are launched on August 1, players will display their own tribute with a specially made ‘Forever 20’ emblem printed into their shirts and stadium jackets, which will remain in place for the season,” the statement added.

Liverpool paid tribute to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva during their friendly at Preston a fortnight ago and will hold their main commemoration, which will feature a fan mosaic and a minute of silence, before they kick off the new season at home to Bournemouth on August 15.

Jota had joined Wolves in 2017 and quickly became a fan favourite, playing a pivotal role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2018.

His consistent performances earned him a move to Liverpool in 2020, where he made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals across all competitions.

The Wolves Hall of Fame was created in 2008 to honour players who have left a lasting impact on the club’s history.

With this induction, Jota joins an elite group that includes legends like Billy Wright, Derek Dougan, and Steve Bull.

New findings emerge in Diogo Jota’s car crash investigation

Spanish authorities have released new findings in the investigation into the tragic car crash that claimed the lives of Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, near Zamora last week.

Initial reports suggest that excessive speed may have been a contributing factor in the fatal accident.

According to international media reports on Tuesday, Jota was allegedly driving above the 120 km/h (75 mph) speed limit when his vehicle reportedly suffered a tyre blowout, leading to a fiery crash in northwestern Spain.

Spain’s Guardia Civil police confirmed that an expert forensic analysis is underway, with investigators examining physical evidence from the crash site, including tyre marks.

“The expert report is being carried out and finished, where among other things they are studying the marks left by one of the wheels of the vehicle,” a Civil Guard spokesperson said.

“There is also the possibility that the speed limit for that road was exceeded, and all current evidence suggests that Diogo Jota himself was behind the wheel.”

Both Jota, 28, and his 25-year-old brother died at the scene of the accident.

Diogo Jota joined Liverpool FC from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and went on to make 182 appearances for the Merseyside club, scoring 65 goals across all competitions.

He was also a regular in the Portuguese national team setup, earning 49 caps and becoming a key figure for the Seleção in recent years.
