FIFA World Cup 2026: 10-man Belgium held to goalless draw by Iran

Belgium were held to a scoreless draw by Iran in a frustrating encounter Sunday that saw the Red Devils reduced to 10 men and facing the possibility of group-stage elimination for a second straight World Cup.

A star-studded though aging lineup, including Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, was, if anything, fortunate to leave Los Angeles with a point, controlling possession yet ceding the game’s best chances to a resolute Iran team.

Iran’s Mehdi Taremi had the ball in the net from a well-worked first-half free kick that was overturned for offside by VAR, while Nathan Ngoy was sent off after the break for hauling down the striker after a badly mis-hit backpass.

The result means all three games in Group G so far have ended in draws. Stuck on two points, Belgium at least have the comfort of playing the tournament’s lowest-ranked team, New Zealand, in their final group game.

Iran will also need at least a point against Egypt next Friday. Having been frustrated by visa issues while traveling from their base camp in Mexico to games in the US, Team Melli will hope to focus on the football as travel restrictions are reportedly easing for their crucial trip to Seattle.

For the second Iran game running, protesters from Los Angeles’ large Persian exile community gathered at the stadium to chant against the country’s hardline regime.

Inside the stadium, Iran’s anthem again drew a chorus of boos and whistles — a reception at odds with the response to the players themselves, who were loudly cheered.

Having switched to a back five, Iran sat deep in the first half, allowing Belgium to dominate possession and to play hundreds of passes around their penalty area without creating any clear-cut opportunities.

Target man Lukaku, back in the starting lineup after making an impact from the bench in Belgium’s 1-1 draw with Egpyt, managed a solitary headed effort in the 36th minute, which sailed over the bar.

Iran had the first half’s two best chances, entirely against the run of play. Hossein Kanani’s low shot after a long throw was well saved by an outstretched Thibaut Courtois.

And Iran’s star striker Taremi had the ball in the net midway through the half after a cleverly worked free kick, but it was ruled offside.

The former Inter Milan man span away from Belgium’s wall, swiveled and buried the ball, before VAR overruled the effort, to the dismay of a vocally pro-Iran crowd.

After the break, Belgium continued to huff and puff while Taremi again nearly scored at the other end. Courtois did well to save after Kanani had flicked on a long throw to the Iran forward.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia made a triple substitution around the hour mark and his side immediately came close, Maxim De Cuyper’s point-blank effort from De Bruyne’s cut-back well saved.

Substitute Hans Vanaken blasted a shot from a rebound well over the bar moments later, as the Red Devils finally began to knock on Iran’s door in earnest.

But disaster struck for Belgium as Ngoy was sent off. The center-back had badly underhit a pass back to Courtois, and raised his arm into Taremi as the striker raced through on goal.

The game settled into a nervous, scrappy stalemate, though De Cuyper again came close with a low effort from just outside the box.

FIFA World Cup: Lamine Yamal inspires Spain rout of Saudi Arabia

ATLANTA: Lamine Yamal starred on his return as Spain bounced back from a goalless draw against Cape Verde to thrash Saudi Arabia 4-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

On his return after two months from a groin injury, Yamal made an immediate impact, ending La Roja’s goal drought.

Yamal opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Mikel Oyarzabal’s brace put the Spaniards way ahead in the competition in the first 24 minutes.

Luis de la Fuente’s men now sit at the top of the table in Group H.

Yamal brilliantly slotted a low pass from Oyarzabal into the net to give his side an early lead. The second goal of the evening came off a corner, picked by Olmo from the right side of the box. Oyarzabal found the oppurtunity and found the right side of the goal.

The Real Sociedad forward scored again in just three minutes. He converted a volley from Dani Olmo’s header to score his 14th goal for his country in his last 13 appearances.

After a dominant first half, Luis de la Fuente substituted both Yamal and Oyarzabal.

The changes did not disrupt the waves of Spanish attack towards the Saudi goal, but the fourth also came via a corner.

Saudi Arabia’s goalkeeper Al-Owais saved a strong shot from Marc Cucurella right after the second half started. But the ball bounced off defender Al Tambakti and went into the net, making it 4-0 for Spain.

Notably, Saudi Arabia had only one shot on target throughout the match, coming in the last 10 minutes from Abdullah Al Hamdan.

Saudi Arabia will play their final group game against Cape Verde in a bid to advance through to the knockouts for the first time in 32 years.

Meanwhile, Spain will travel to Guadalajara next for the final group game against two-time winners Uruguay on Friday.

Brazil provide update on Raphinha’s injury

Brazil forward Raphinha is likely to miss the FIFA World Cup game against Scotland as he will undergo “intensive treatment” after suffering a muscle injury to his right thigh during the match against Haiti, the Brazilian football confederation (CBF) said Saturday.

Barcelona winger Raphinha was substituted in the first half on Friday in Philadelphia.

The CBF did not say how long he would be sidelined for, but Brazilian website Globo Esporte reported he could be fit to return for a possible game in the last 16, which starts in two weeks’ time.

“The player will follow an intensive treatment protocol under the supervision of the Brazilian national team’s medical team, with the goal of recovering and returning to action as soon as possible,” the CBF said in a statement.

Raphinha struggled with various injuries to his right thigh last season.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti could turn to either of the 19-year-old duo of Endrick and Rayan, or Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, to replace Raphinha.

Five-time world champions Brazil, who have four points from two games, round off their Group C campaign against Scotland on Wednesday in Miami.

That game could provide Neymar, sidelined for a month with a calf injury, a first international appearance since October 2023.

FIFA World Cup 2026: Iran travel restrictions to be eased, says coach

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei said on Saturday he has been told US travel restrictions on his FIFA World Cup 2026 team will finally be eased for their third group game, but blasted the treatment they have received so far for damaging their on-field performance.

The Iranian squad arrived at the World Cup with their country still at war with co-hosts the United States, and have been based in Mexico while playing all their games in the US.

That has required frequent cross-border travel, and US authorities have only permitted the team to remain in the country for a few hours after each game, with restrictions frequently shifting at the last minute.

After playing Belgium in Los Angeles on Sunday, Iran’s final group game will take place in Seattle next Friday against Egypt.

Ghalenoei on Saturday said he had been told his team would have more flexibility for their final match, before quickly adding that it would have been “justice” for his team to have the same treatment for its first two games.

“They said in Seattle, you can do what you want, you can act the way you want to, and you can come earlier,” he told a press conference, without specifying who exactly the information had come from.

“But what I want, my problem is, why didn’t they let us come earlier for the first two games as well?

“I just know for the last game, yes, they’ve allowed us to decide, to make our own decisions with regard to planning the travel.

“But unfortunately, for the first two games, others made these travel arrangements for us, and the timing for us.”

Last week, Iran drew 2-2 with New Zealand, the tournament’s lowest-ranked team, with sloppy defending twice allowing the All Whites to go ahead before Team Melli equalized.

“There were errors, individual ones, and also with regards to this defense we had, and I think we were playing… we were doing too many passes,” said Ghalenoei.

“And I think, because we have been flying too much, commuting, as a result of this long commute, we’ve been tired.”

The manager said restrictions on his team had been even more onerous for Sunday’s upcoming game against Belgium, Group G’s highest-ranked team.

Ghalenoei said his team had arrived in the US on Saturday, less than 24 hours before kickoff, despite being briefly told by FIFA on Friday, early afternoon, that they may be able to travel that day.

“We waited till 7.00pm, nothing happened, and they said, ‘Sorry, we weren’t able to do that,” said the coach.

“That’s going to affect us mentally, especially me as a head coach, because I want to focus on technical stuff,” he said.

Iran had only been able to do half its usual pre-game training session, complained Ghalenoei.

All four teams in Group G currently have one point, with only the top two guaranteed to reach the knockout stages. A majority of third-placed teams across all groups will also progress, depending on their performance.

Eloy Room heroics earn Curacao World Cup point against Ecuador

Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room was the hero on Saturday as the tiny Caribbean island claimed its first-ever World Cup point in a goalless draw against toothless Ecuador.

Ecuador, who finished second in South American qualifying, had 28 shots, including 15 on target, in Kansas City but Room stood firm in an astonishing display.

The 0-0 draw in Group E keeps alive Curacao’s hopes of reaching the knockout phase, extending their fairytale journey at their first World Cup.

The tiny country, the smallest by population ever to play on football’s biggest stage, have Miami FC goalkeeper Room to thank for their point against Ecuador.

Room’s 15 saves are the most on record, since 1966, by any goalkeeper at a World Cup match that did not feature extra-time.

The draw in the American Midwest restored pride after a 7-1 mauling by Germany in their opening match.

“History! Our first ever point at the @fifaworldcup,” Curacao posted on X.

“I still have to process it myself,” said Room. “The match was full of emotions. I knew it was going to be a tough match.

“There were lots of saves, but I think after the first save, the tone was put in place, also for the team. It gave me confidence, and I grew. We all grew, and this was a team effort.

“We were fighting up to the last minute. Earning a point this way for Curacao is absolutely great.”

Ecuador fans turned Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the NFL team Kansas City Chiefs, yellow, hugely outnumbering supporters of Curacao.

But Curacao had royalty on their side in the form of Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima. The island is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Out of their 26-strong squad, managed by vastly experienced Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, 25 were born in the Netherlands, and many play their football there.

The match started at a fizzing pace. Ecuador seemed certain to open the scoring in the third minute when former West Ham forward Enner Valencia burst through the middle, but Room tipped the ball around the post.

Sherel Floranus fired over at the other end as Curacao showed their pace on the break.

Ecuador captain Valencia failed to beat Room from close range before Jordy Alcivar had an effort as Ecuador continued to dominate.

The South American team ended the first half with 65 percent of possession but nothing to show for their dominance. They went close to breaking the deadlock just before the hour mark, but Room kept out a Gonzalo Plata header, before a flurry of Curacao chances.

Ecuador, more than 50 places higher than their opponents in the FIFA rankings, looked increasingly frazzled as they pressed for an opener. They continued to pour forward and rained shots on Room’s goal, but he stood firm.

Ecuador substitute Angelo Preciado mishit a cross that bounced off the top of the crossbar and went behind in the final minutes.

The Curacao players swarmed around goalkeeper Eloy Room at the end of the match, celebrating an extraordinary point.

Ecuador have yet to score in two games at the World Cup after netting just 14 goals in 18 qualifying matches.

Earlier, four-time champions Germany came from behind to beat the Ivory Coast 2-1 in Toronto, sealing their qualification for the round of 32. Curacao’s draw ensures Germany will top the group.

Ecuador will play Germany on Thursday, while Curacao take on the Ivory Coast, with all of the teams in Group E still alive in the competition.

Japan crush Tunisia 4-0 in FIFA World Cup’s 1,000th game

Japan marked the 1,000th game in the history of the FIFA World Cup with a 4-0 thrashing of Tunisia on Saturday to close in on a place in the last 32 of the 2026 edition.

Ayase Ueda scored twice while Daichi Kamada and Junya Ito were also on target as the Asian giants joined the Netherlands on four points at the top of Group F.

Tunisia, who were thumped 5-1 by Sweden in their first game of the tournament, can no longer hope for a place in the knockout rounds.

The Blue Samurai, who held the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw in their Group F opener, were always in control against Tunisia at the Monterrey Stadium.

The result marked a losing start for new Tunisia manager Herve Renard, who was hastily appointed to take over the World Cup campaign after predecessor Sabri Lamouchi was sacked in the wake of the Sweden drubbing.

But Renard’s team never looked like threatening a technically superior Japanese side that were quickly into their trademark, smooth passing game.

Daichi Kamada opened the scoring after just four minutes, finishing from close range after deft interplay from Ao Tanaka and Keito Nakamura.

The Japanese almost scored again moments later, with only a desperate goalline clearance from Dylan Bronn denying the Asian giants a second goal.

Tunisia goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen was also working overtime, and had to claw away a shot that just went agonisingly short of crossing the goal line.

Japan, though, finally added to their tally in the 31st minute, with striker Ueda taking advantage of some hesitant Tunisian defending to surge forward and thunder a low shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

The rout continued in the second half, with Junya Ito latching onto a brilliant through ball to calmly finish on 69 minutes before Ueda scored again with a looping header in the 83rd minute.

Germany come from behind against Ivory Coast to seal knockout place

TORONTO: Substitute Deniz Undav’s late magic inspired Germany comeback against a spirited Ivory Coast, securing their place in the Round of 32 stage at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Die Mannschaft secured a 2-1 victory, with Undav scoring a brace in the 68th and four minutes into stoppage time to guide his team home.

The result marks the first time since 2014 that Germany have reached the knockout rounds after back-to-back first-round eliminations in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

Germany had not advanced from the group stage since winning the 2014 tournament in Brazil, and coach Julian Nagelsmann had been under huge pressure to make that breakthrough.

A first-half goal by Franck Kessie gave the Ivorians a 30th-minute lead.

Kessie turned in from close range following strong work by teenage Ivorian phenomenon Yan Diomande, who is in the sights of some of Europe’s top clubs, including Liverpool.

The Germans thought they had found the net twice in the first half.

Nathaniel Brown’s corner in the 21st minute was knocked into the goal by Aleksandar Pavlovic, but Paraguayan referee Juan Gabriel Benitez immediately called it back — charging Pavlovic with fouling Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

Then, in the 38th minute, German forward and Arsenal star Kai Havertz had the ball in the net, but it was disallowed because of a foul by Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala.

When the second half began, the Germans applied relentless pressure.

The vaunted Ivorian defence held firm till the 68th minute, but ultimately the Germans broke through.

Undav, of VfB Stuttgart, volleyed in a cross by Nadiem Amiri in the 63rd minute.

His second sent Nagelsmann and the German crowd into a frenzy as the Germans snapped a string of disappointments at the last two World Cups.

Ruthless Netherlands humble Sweden in FIFA World Cup 2026 clash

HOUSTON: The Netherlands completed a resounding 5-1 victory over Sweden in the 33rd match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the Houston Stadium on Saturday.

The dominant victory has mathematically guaranteed them a place in the knockouts of the mega event.

Striker Brian Brobbey’s induction into the side paid dividends as he scored a brace, while winger Cody Gakpo stamped Dutch authority with a double later in the match. Memphis Depay netted the final goal of the night to cap off a fabulous performance.

Brobbey started the proceedings, giving his side an early lead in only the fifth minute of the game, running down the side of the field and sending it into the nets to score his second international goal.

He doubled the lead in the 17th minute, converting a low cross from Denzel Dumfries and sending it into the bottom corner.

At halftime, the Oranje remained firmly in control, with Sweden on the receiving end.

The break did little to Sweden’s fortunes, who again came in the firing line, and this time from Codey Gakpo, who scored twice in a span of six minutes to make it 3-0.

The substitute Crysencio Summerville came on and made an immediate impact, using his quick footwork on the right side of the box and passing to Denzel Dumfries, who then sent a low cross into the area. Gakpp seized the oppurtunity and scored an easy goal in the 47th minute.

Summervile continued to impress, who glided forward and passed it to Gakpo, who rifled a low shot from an angle.  This was also the 100th goal of the World Cup.

The only highlight for Blagult was the lone goal from substitute Anthony Elanga in the 59th minute, converting a through-ball from Alexander Isak to race away from the break through Dutch defense and register the first goal for his side.

The game was long done and dusted, but Summerville ensured that his side made it a statement win. The West Ham winger latched onto a pass, drove towards the box, made space, and sent a low shot inside the post for his second goal of this World Cup.

The Netherlands will face Tunisia on 26 June in the final Group F match, while Sweden will face Japan at the same time at Dallas Stadium in Texas.

Netherlands’ Gakpo scores 100th goal of FIFA World Cup at record pace

HOUSTON: The FIFA World Cup 2026 match between the Netherlands and Sweden has marked a historic milestone, with 100 goals scored in just the 33rd match of the tournament.

It is the first time since the 1958 FIFA World Cup that the same tally has been achieved in 32/33 games, with two matches kicking off at the same time. The record for fastest century of goals was set in the first 19/20 games of the 1954 edition.

The 2014 World Cup in Brazil was also a high-scoring affair, with 100 goals reached in 35 matches.

The Netherlands made a strong start in the match, with Brian Brobbey opening the scoring inside six minutes. The forward added a second before half-time to put the Dutch in control at the break.

Cody Gakpo extended the lead after the interval, with The Orange continuing to dominate proceedings.

The 100-goal milestone of the tournament was reached in the 54th minute when Gakpo struck again, finishing a swift counter-attack after Sweden’s Alexander Isak was dispossessed in his own half.

Crysencio Summerville was involved in the build-up, driving forward before setting up Gakpo, who finished low at the near post. With this, Cody Gakpo also surpassed the Netherlands legend Johan Cruyff in terms of goal scoring.

In addition, the fixture made the Netherlands the eighth team to score 100 goals in the mega event’s history.

Brazil star Ronaldinho comes out of retirement

Former Ballon d’Or and World Cup winner Ronaldinho is set to come out of retirement aged 46 to play for Ravenna in the Italian third tier, according to reports in Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport.

The sports daily said that Ronaldinho was scheduled to sign a deal in Miami on Tuesday and that he was already in the United States for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Consulted by AFP, a source close to the deal confirmed the news.

“I can’t wait to get back dancing with the ball again and to write a new story with Ignazio Cipriani (the Italian-American owner of Ravenna) and his entire family,” Gazzetta quoted Ronaldinho as saying.

“Football has always been a source of joy for me. I want to bring the same spirit to Ravenna,” added the former Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona star.

However, Ravenna vice-president Ariedo Braida, told Italian media that Ronaldinho’s signing was more a marketing ploy than a piece of squad-building and he may never actually play.

“He’s a magical player, who will have his registration, that’s a huge coup for us,” he said.

“Will he play at 46? That depends, but he’ll be registered.”

Ronaldinho has not played since a two-month stint at Fluminense in 2015.
