MLC 2025: Donovan Ferreira stars as Texas Super Kings beat LA Knight Riders

DALLAS: Shubham Ranjane’s composed 70 and Donovan Ferreira’s impactful all-round show helped Texas Super Kings return to winning ways with a 52-run win over Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 on Tuesday.

Opting to bowl first at Grand Prairie Stadium, LAKR made early inroads as Shadley van Schalkwyk ripped through Texas’ top order.

He struck twice in two balls to dismiss Saiteja Mukkamalla (9) and Marcus Stoinis (0), reducing the Super Kings to 33-3 inside four overs.

Smit Patel held firm at one end and stitched a 64-run stand with Ranjane to revive the innings.

Patel contributed a steady 38 off 33 before Andre Russell broke the partnership. Ranjane, however, carried on and found a dynamic partner in Donovan Ferreira.

The duo added a brisk 82-run partnership for the fifth wicket, with Ferreira doing most of the damage, smashing 43 off just 21 balls, including four boundaries and three sixes.

Both batters were dismissed in the 19th over, with Ranjane falling after a well-compiled 70 off 45 deliveries (6 fours, 4 sixes), and Ferreira run out.

Texas Super Kings lost momentum in the death overs and fell short of the 200-mark, finishing at 196-8.

Van Schalkwyk and Russell picked up three wickets apiece, while Ali Khan chipped in with one.

Chasing 197, LA Knight Riders faltered early as Akeal Hosein struck twice in his first over, removing Alex Hales (5) and Nitish Kumar (0) to leave the side reeling at 10-2.

Unmukt Chand (30) and Saif Badar (19) attempted to rebuild with a 45-run stand, but Marcus Stoinis broke the partnership, triggering a collapse.

Rovman Powell (21) and Jason Holder (26* off 15) tried to inject some life into the chase, but lacked support from the other end.

Texas bowlers maintained control throughout, with Hosein and Noor Ahmed bagging two wickets each. Zia-ul-Haq, Stoinis, and Ferreira took one apiece as LAKR were restricted to 144-7 in their 20 overs.

The convincing win lifted the Texas Super Kings to second place on the MLC 2025 points table, snapping a two-match losing streak.

Ferreira’s blast gives Super Kings winning start in SA20

DURBAN: Donovan Ferreira smashed an unbeaten 82 from 40 balls to help Joburg Super Kings seal the opening-game win in the SA20 as they beat Durban Super Giants by 16 runs on Wednesday.

Faf du Plessis’s Super Kings showcased great batting muscle after they elected to bat, posting a mammoth 191-run target. The home side, in return, managed 174/5 despite skipper Quinton de Kock’s blistering 78 from 52 balls.

Following their first win, Super Kings went second in the table below MI Cape Town, who thrashed Paarl Royals by eight wickets in the inaugural match on Tuesday to grab a bonus point in addition to four win points.

The visiting side underwent an unwanted start as openers Reeza Hedrick and Janneman Malan fell cheaply, sliding Super Kings to 8/2 in 2.5 overs. But, a valiant fightback from the skipper du Plessis and late fireworks from Ferreira and Romario Shepherd steered the side to 191/6 in 20 overs.

The captain made 39 from 33 balls before he was dismissed by Akila Dananjaya in the 14th over. Shepherd and Ferreira, then gathered an astounding 87-run partnership for the sixth wicket, taking their team from 99/5 to 186/5 before the last two balls of the final over.

Jason Holder castled Shepherd on the penultimate delivery for 40 off 19 balls before George Garton smashed a boundary on the final ball.

Super Giants, however, hoisted a solid start to their chase, scoring 98 without loss before West Indies’ Kyle Myers was stumped out off Aaron Phangiso (1-37) in the 12th over.

De Kock continued for a short while but a horrendous misjudgment off Feirara’s bowling found the tow edge of the bat and went straight to the bowler.

With set batters leaving the crease, Super Giants lost control of the control as they managed only 48 runs in the last six overs while losing three more wickets.

Ferreira was adjudged player of the match for his batting might and an impactful wicket of the Super Giants skipper that derailed the chase.
