WATCH: Shaheen, Rauf engage in war of words with Sharma

DUBAI: Pakistan left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi were involved in a heated exchange with India’s opener Abhishek Sharma during the Super Fours second match in the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025 here at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

The incident happened during the opening ball of India’s innings when Sharma tonked Afridi for a six.

After conceding a six, Shaheen exchanged words with Abhishek during his follow-through. In reply, the soutpaw said something to Shaheen that did not sit well with him.

Later on, speedster Haris Rauf was also seen saying a few words to Abhishek Sharma.

This happened in the last over of the powerplay when Gill crunched Haris for a four and called out the pacer immediately, while Sharma at the non-striker’s end joined the sledging.

Haris Rauf faced the Indian openers, Sharma and Gill, prompting the on-field umpires to step in and defuse the situation.

Nonetheless, India cruised to a comprehensive win in the second last over on the loss of just four wickets. Tilak Varma made 30* not out off 19 balls, while Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on seven.

Earlier, it was Abhishek Sharma’s onslaught that set the tone for India’s easy win. He, alongside Shubman Gill, made light work of the chase with a solid opening partnership of 105 runs.

Gill made 47 from 28 with the help of eight fours, while Sharma hit five sixes and six boundaries on his way to 74 from 39 balls.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement citing significant technical failure at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala.

The official broadcasters reported that the match was halted due to floodlight failure. However, the Hindustan Times cited an ESPNcricinfo report revealing that the IPL authorities had requested the evacuation of the stadium for security reasons.

Additionally, the report cited PTI, mentioning that the floodlights dimmed during the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals match for security reasons.

Earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) postponed the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10 clash between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings. The decision was made due to rising tensions between Pakistan and India.

For the unversed, the tensions between India and Pakistan escalated in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

This incident has increased the already fragile relationship between the two countries.

On early Wednesday, India launched a “cowardly” missile attack on Pakistani territory, firing from across the Line of Control, according to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR),

DG ISPR confirmed that the missiles targeted areas including Kotli, Muzaffarabad, Ahmedpur Sharqia, Bagh, and Muridke.

The Pakistan armed forces responded swiftly and successfully intercepted the threat and prevented Indian aircraft from breaching Pakistani airspace.

In retaliation, Pakistan’s military shot down five Indian aircraft and destroyed a brigade headquarters across the border, according to ISPR.

Imad Wasim reflects on his T20 World Cup 2024 knock against India

Former Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim has discussed his innings of 15 runs off 23 balls in the narrow defeat to arch-rivals India during the T20 World Cup 2024 in New York.

In that match, India set a target of 120 runs on a challenging pitch at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

Although Pakistan began their chase well, they ultimately fell short, losing by six runs. Imad came in to bat when Pakistan was at 73 for 3 in 12.2 overs, needing 47 more runs from 46 balls.

He explained that the plan was to take the run chase deeper, but he found it difficult to execute that strategy effectively.

Despite a relatively modest target of 120 runs, the Pakistani batting lineup faced 59 dot balls, finishing with a score of 113 for 7.

In a recent interview, Imad Wasim reflected on the criticism he faced after his performance.

“When I scored 15 runs off 23 balls against India, the criticism I received made me feel as though I hadn’t achieved anything in my life. I did my best and sincerely apologized to the team and management,” he said.

It’s important to note that Imad Wasim previously announced his retirement from international cricket but continues to play in domestic leagues and franchise cricket.

He shared his decision on X (formerly Twitter), mentioning that it came after considerable thought.

“To all fans and supporters: After much thought and reflection, I have decided to retire from international cricket.”

“Representing Pakistan on the world stage has been the greatest honor of my life, and every moment wearing the green jersey has been unforgettable,” said Imad Wasim.
