Saud clarifies comments on Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf

LAHORE: Quetta Gladiators captain Saud Shakeel has clarified remarks he made about Pakistan pacers Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf during a recent podcast.

A few weeks earlier, Saud appeared on a podcast in which he was asked which of three bowlers — Khurram Shehzad, Shaheen Afridi, and Haris Rauf—he would play, retire, or bench if he were the national selector.

“I will play Khurram, retire Shaheen, and bench Rauf,” Pakistan Test vice-captain had replied.

The remarks soon gained traction, with people sharing different opinions about the duo.

Ahead of PSL 11’s start, Saud said his comments were made in a light-hearted manner and were not intended seriously.

“The podcast was done in a funny way, but it was presented as something serious,” he said.

Saud has played alongside both pacers. The two have recently been in the spotlight following inconsistent performances: Rauf was dropped from Pakistan’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, while Shaheen had a below-par campaign.

This will be the second year in a row that Saud will lead the Quetta Gladiators side.

Last season, Quetta Gladiators were outplayed in the final by Lahore Qalandars, thanks to Sikandar Raza’s heroics.

The PSL 11 will begin on March 26 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.  Quetta Gladiators will open their campaign against Karachi Kings on March 27 at the same venue.

IPL misses out on top spot in WCA league rankings

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been ranked third among the top 10 franchise leagues around the globe, according to rankings released by the World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) on Thursday.

According to the WCA, England’s ‘The Hundred’ and South Africa’s ‘SA20’ were ranked first and second, respectively.

India’s marquee T20 competition earned the most points for average payment and payment reliability, but it could not secure the top spot due to lagging in areas like ‘right to organize’ and ‘dispute resolution’.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) held the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.

After rankings were announced, WCA CEO Tom Moffat highlighted the growth of domestic leagues while stressing the need for improvement.

“WCA is fortunate to have a birds eye view of the global game, and daily engagements with players competing in leagues around the world. The growth of the domestic leagues landscape has been overwhelmingly positive for our sport, but it has the potential to be even better,” he said.

“We want all sanctioned leagues to be successful, and to provide fair protections and standards for people within them,” Moffat added.

He further remarked on reaching out to each league to work on the sport’s betterment and to promote its ongoing professionalisation.

“We have reached out to each league, inviting them to work with us to meet best practice benchmarks, and to continue to advance the professionalisation and growth of our sport,” he continued

“We intend to provide consistent updates, including on both good practice, and on issues, as they arise during the year,” he concluded.

Emerging category retentions revealed ahead of PSL 11 auction

LAHORE: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 on Tuesday announced the renewals for Silver and Emerging categories ahead of the landmark player auction, set to be held on 11 February.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 has announced the renewals for its Silver and Emerging categories ahead of the landmark player auction, scheduled for 11 February.

The announcement was made on PSL social media handles, with the existing six outfits revealing their retained names.

Three times PSL winners Islamabad United retained all-rounders Saad Masood and Mohammad Shahzad, alongside wicket keeper Ghazi Ghouri.

Meanwhile, the 2020 edition winners Karachi Kings retained pacers Riazullah and Fawad Ali, as well as wicket keeper-batter Saad Baig.

The PSL X winners Lahore Qalandars have named just one player in the emerging category, retaining left-arm wrist spinner Momin Qamar.

Multan Sultans also have retained medium pacer Shahid Aziz and wicket keeper Mohammad Zulkifal.

Similarly, Quetta Gladiators chose fast bowler Mohammad Zeeshan and opener Shamyl Hussain as their emerging category retentions.

It is worth mentioning that this will be the first time since PSL’s inception that a player’s auction will be held instead of the traditional Draft system.

The strategic shift is aimed at enhancing competitive balance, increasing transparency, and providing players’ greater earning opportunities.

Under the revised framework, each franchise will be allowed to retain a maximum of four players, with only one retention permitted per category.

This marks a sharp departure from previous seasons, where teams could retain up to eight players, along with additional provisions such as mentors, brand ambassadors and the Right to Match (RTM) option.

For PSL 11, the PCB has abolished the mentor, brand ambassador and RTM clauses altogether, streamlining the squad-building process ahead of the auction.

The two newly inducted franchises, Hyderabad and Sialkot, will also be granted special provisions, allowing them to select and retain four players from the available pool before the player auction.

In addition, every team will be permitted one direct signing of a foreign player who did not feature in PSL 10, a move designed to inject fresh international talent into the competition.

The PCB also confirmed that PSL 11 will get underway on March 26, 2026, and will mark Faisalabad’s first-ever stint as a host city. The venue will join Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi, expanding the league to five host cities.
