India crush Bangladesh in T20 World Cup warm-up

NEW YORK: Rishabh Pant’s blistering half-century, followed by a combined bowling effort led India to thwart Bangladesh in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up match here on Saturday.

Opting to bat first, India registered a massive total of 182/5 in the allotted 20 overs, courtesy of Pant’s brisk half-century and Hardik Pandya’s late fireworks.

The former champions, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost Sanju Samson (1) in the second over with just one run on the board.

Following the early blow, Pant joined skipper Rohit Sharma in the middle and knitted an anchoring partnership for the second wicket.

The duo added 58 runs for the second wicket before Sharma fell victim to Mahmudullah in the seventh over.

He scored 23 off 19 deliveries, laced up with two fours and a six.

Pant was then involved in yet another important partnership when he put together 44 runs with Suryakumar Yadav before getting retired out in the 12th over briefly after amassing his half-century.

He remained the top-scorer for India with a 32-ball 53, hitting four fours and as many boundaries.

Yadav then put together a brief partnership with Shivam Dube (14) before perishing in the 17th over.

He smashed four boundaries on his way to an 18-ball 31.

Later, Hardik Pandya took the reigns of India’s batting charge and scored a quickfire 40 off just 23 deliveries with the help of two boundaries and four sixes.

For Bangladesh, Tanvir Islam, Mahmudullah, Shoriful Islam and Mahedi Hasan made one scalp each.

Chasing 183, Bangladesh could only manage 122/9 despite Mahmudullah’s gutsy knock.

Bangladesh had a disastrous start to the pursuit as they lost half of their side with just 41 runs on the board in 8.2 overs.

Following the slump, Mahmudullah joined Shakib Al Hasan and the duo launched recovery.

They batted for almost 10 overs before Mahmudullah opted to retire after scoring 40 off 28 deliveries.

Shakib fell victim to Jasprit Bumrah in the same over, bringing the total down to 116/7. He scored a scratchy 28 off 34 deliveries.

Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube bagged two wickets each while Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya struck out a batter apiece.

India’s comfortable victory over Bangladesh marked the end of the warm-up matches for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The 20-team tournament commences today with the co-host United States of America (USA) taking on Canada in the curtain-raiser.

Virat Kohli closes gap on Sachin Tendulkar’s record after 48th ODI ton

Virat Kohli said he was enjoying the “special feeling” of playing in a World Cup on home soil after his unbeaten century guided India to a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in their fourth match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Kohli’s 48th ODI century left him just one shy of equalling Indian great Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49 ODI hundreds.

Kohli made 103 not out with a six against spinner Nasum Ahmed, the shot also ending the match in a finish worthy of a Bollywood movie as India reached a target of 257 with more than eight overs to spare.

He faced 97 balls, including six fours and four sixes, with this century his third score in excess of fifty in four innings following contributions of 85 and 55 not out over Australia and Afghanistan.

“I’ve had a few fifties in World Cups and haven’t converted them so I just wanted to finish the game off this time around,” Kohli said afterwards.

“The pitch was pretty good, it allowed me to play my game and just hit the gaps.”

India have now won all four of their matches in the tournament to date.

“There is a great atmosphere in the changing room, we’re loving each other’s company, the spirit is there for everyone to see on the field,” said Kohli, who played alongside Tendulkar in the India team that defeated Sri Lanka in the ICC World Cup 2011 final in Mumbai.

“We understand it’s a long tournament and you need to create some momentum for the guys to come out and play like this.

“It’s a special feeling playing at home in front of all these people and we just want to make the most of it.”

This was Virat Kohli’s first century in the World Cup since his 107 against Pakistan during the 2015 edition in Adelaide, with the 34-year-old posting seven fifties at the tournament prior to Thursday’s hundred.

Virat Kohli was helped on his way, however, by KL Rahul, who kept himself in check during a run-a-ball 34 not out.

Two balls before he reached his century, a Nasum delivery fired down the leg side was not signalled a wide — although any controversy was short-lived given the ensuing six.

“He (Kohli) was confused, he said ‘it’ll not look too nice not to take the single, it’s still a World Cup, and it’s still a big stage. I don’t want to look like I am just trying to get the milestone’,” Rahul said.

“But I said, I mean it is not won but still I think we’ll win quite easily, so if you can get to the milestone why not, you must try. And he did that in the end. I wasn’t going to run the singles anyway.”

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who made 53, Gill and put on 88 for the first wicket with Rohit before a stand of 44 with Kohli, said batting with the duo was an education.

“I think there’s a fine line between sometimes being too aggressive or going in the shell, especially playing big games.

“But I think the way they play, the way their mindset is playing those big games in the World Cup is what I try to learn.”

Ton-up Kohli helps India stay perfect in ICC World Cup 2023

PUNE: Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century, paired up with Shubman Gill’s half-century propelled India to a dominating seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Chasing a modest 257, India comfortably raised 261 for the loss of three wickets and 51 balls to spare, thanks to Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century, his 48th in the 50-over format and 78th overall.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma once again scripted a flying start for his side in the run chase as he, alongside Shubman Gill, scored 88 runs for the first wicket stand.

Rohit, who majorly dominated the opening stand, fell just shy of his half-century as he perished after scoring a 40-ball 48 which featured seven boundaries and two sixes.

Virat Kohli then joined Shubman Gill at the crease and together another crucial partnership for India, adding 44 runs to the total before the latter perished soon after amassing his half-century.

He remained a notable contributor to India’s fourth victory in the ICC World Cup 2023 with a brilliant 53. His 55-ball knock included five boundaries and two boundaries.

Kohli was then involved in another brief partnership as Shreyas Iyer played a cautious 19-run knock, conceding 25 balls and hitting only two boundaries.

KL Rahul then joined Kohli and gave him subtle support with his unbeaten run-a-ball 34 and the star batter smashed Nasum Ahmed for a six to register India’s fourth consecutive victory in the ongoing mega event.

He remained unbeaten with a 97-ball 103 which included six boundaries and four sixes.

A thumping victory over Bangladesh, however, could not power India to pip New Zealand and secure the top berth in the ICC World Cup 2023 standings due to an inferior net run rate.

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh could post 256/8 in the allotted 50 overs despite a solid start from their openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das.

The duo dominated the Indian bowlers and put together a 93-run partnership before Tanzid Hasan fell victim to Kuldeep Yadav soon after amassing his half-century.

He scored 51 in just 43 deliveries with the help of five boundaries and three sixes.

Meanwhile, Das stood his ground firm and stitched brief partnerships with Najmul Hossain Shanto (8) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (3) before finally perishing in the 28th over with 137 runs on the board.

He remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with an 82-ball 66 which featured seven boundaries.

Following his dismissal, experienced wicketkeeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim joined Towhid Hridoy at the crease and put on an anchoring 42-run partnership which lasted with the former’s departure in the 38th over.

Rahim was then involved in a brief 22-run partnership with Mahmudullah until Jasprit Bumrah’s slower delivery sent him packing on 38. His 46-ball knock featured one boundary and a six.

Mahmudullah then took the reigns of Bangladesh’s batting charge as he added valuable runs to the team’s total at the backend before being castled by Bumrah in the final over.

He remained a notable run-getter for Bangladesh with a brisk 36-ball 46, laced up with three boundaries and as many sixes.

Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj led the bowling attack for India with two wickets each while Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur had a wicket apiece.

Bangladesh stun India ahead of Asia Cup 2023 final

COLOMBO: A combined bowling effort, followed by Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy’s half-centuries powered Bangladesh to a stunning six-run victory over India ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 final on Sunday.

Set to chase 266, India could accumulate 259 before being bundled out in the final over despite Shubman Gill’s century.

Gill waged a lone battle for India with a 133-ball 121 which featured eight boundaries and five sixes.

Besides him, Axar Patel, who kept India in the hunt until the penultimate, was the other notable run-getter for India with a gutsy 42-run knock, laced with three boundaries and two sixes.

Mustafizur Rahman led the bowling attack for Bangladesh in their farewell Asia Cup 2023 fixture with 3/50 while debutant Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mahedi Hasan bagged two each.

Put into bat first, Bangladesh put on a decent total on the board at the back of a combined effort, led by their skipper Shakib.

Bangladesh, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as the Indian pacers ran through their top order to leave them reeling at 28/3 in 5.4 overs.

Came out to bat at number five, skipper Shakib attempted to stabilize Bangladesh’s innings as he put together a brief partnership with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who fell after a scratchy 13-run knock.

Following the slump, Shakib Al Hasan finally found subtle support at the other end in the form of Towhid Hridoy and they soon launched an astounding recovery.

The pair put together 101 runs for the fifth wicket before Shardul Thakur castled Shakib in the 34th over.

He remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh in the last Asia Cup 2023 Super 4s match with an 85-ball 80 which featured six boundaries and three sixes.

Bangladesh were then rocked with another blow as Ravindra Jadeja trapped Shamim Hossain (1) trapped in his legs in the next over.

However, Towhid Hridoy stood his ground firm and kept the scoreboard ticking before finally perishing in the 42nd over, briefly after completing his half-century.

He scored a cautious 54 off 81 balls with the help of five boundaries and two sixes.

Nasum Ahmed then took the reigns of Bangladesh’s batting charge after Hridoy’s dismissal and frustrated the Indian bowlers at the backend.

Ahmed played a brisk 44-run knock which featured six boundaries and a six.

He was also involved in a crucial 45-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Mahedi Hasan, who scored 29 not out.

Shardul Thakur led the bowling attack for India in the last Asia Cup 2023 Super 4s fixture with 3/65, followed by Mohammed Shami’s 2/32.

Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Prasidh Krishna, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

India beat Bangladesh in second Test thriller

DHAKA: Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin held firm as India beat Bangladesh in a thrilling second Test on Sunday, dashing hopes in Dhaka of a first-ever win over their giant neighbours.

India needed just 145 to win the match and the series 2-0 but the visitors in the end won by only three wickets in a nail-biting morning’s play on day four in Dhaka.

Bangladesh overcame India in the preceding 50-over series but have never beaten them in a Test. India had won 10 of the teams’ previous 12 Tests, including five victories by an innings.

India won the first Test comfortably by 188 runs in Chittagong and were widely expected to romp home in the second game, cementing their position in second place in the ICC World Test Championship.

India bowled Bangladesh out on Saturday for a sub-par 231 but the home side’s spinners Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan then reduced the visitors to 45-4 at stumps with 100 still to chase.

Shakib started the slide with the wicket of captain KL Rahul for two and then Mehidy claimed Cheteshwar Pujara, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli — all for single-digit scores.

Bangladesh then reduced India to 74-7 when play resumed on Sunday but Shreyas (29 not out) and Ashwin (42 not out) put on 71 runs in an unbroken eighth-wicket stand to steer India home.

Mehidy was the stand-out bowler for Bangladesh in the second innings, finishing with 5-63, which included two wickets in the morning.

Bangladesh dominated play in the opening hour as Shakib dismissed nightwatchman Jaydev Unadkat, who hit a six in the opening over but fell in the next after making 13.

Mehidy then trapped danger man Rishabh Pant leg before for nine before he bowled unbeaten overnight batsman Axar Patel for 34 runs.

Ashwin was dropped by Mominul Haque on one at forward short leg before he grew in confidence, with Iyer looking solid against spin at the other end.

After his three fours in two overs, Bangladesh were forced to finally bring pacers into the attack but to no avail.

Ashwin — named player of the match — took India close with a six after Mehidy changed his bowling end and wrapped up the contest with two more boundaries.

“(I’m) not going to lie, there was a lot of tension in the dressing room. It was a tough wicket to bat on, they put us under pressure in both innings,” said Rahul, who captained in place of injured Rohit Sharma.

“Everyone contributed. We always knew that we had a chance… Very good Test cricket, that’s what the crowds love to see,” said Shakib.

“Both teams were really good. Credit goes to Shreyas and Ashwin, they absorbed the pressure well and built a partnership,” Shakib said.

Rock-solid Pujara was named player of the series, with the Sussex star making 222 runs in the series.

Bangladesh bowlers rattle India to leave match hanging in the balance

DHAKA: Bangladesh fought their way into what earlier appeared a lost cause on Saturday, knocking over four Indian wickets to leave the visitors teetering after Liton Das compiled a gritty half-century on the third day of the second Test in Dhaka.

The Bangladesh bowlers were given 145 runs to defend after Liton’s steely 73 and a wagging tail steered the hosts to 231 all out.

Despite the subpar score, spinners Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan rose to the challenge, reducing India to 45-4 at stumps with 100 still left to chase, leaving the match unexpectedly hanging in the balance.

Mehidy claimed three wickets after Shakib’s initial breakthrough, removing Cheteshwar Pujara (six), Shubman Gill (seven) and Virat Kohli (one). Shakib started the slide with the wicket of captain KL Rahul for two.

Axar Patel survived the day to stay unbeaten on 26 alongside nightwatchman Jaydev Unadkat (three), with first-innings heroes Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer yet to come in.

Liton said after the close of play that Bangladesh could keep India under pressure and eke out a win with early wickets on Sunday.

“It is possible to win if we can take one or two more wickets in the early morning,” he said.

“Rishabh and Iyer are yet to come, they are of course good players, but as I said if we can take one or two more wickets they will remain under pressure.”

For India, building a partnership remains vital.

“I feel we should not overthink that four wickets have gone. If one of our batsmen get set, there won’t be much pressure on us,” fast bowler Mohammed Siraj said.

Axar had earlier downed three Bangladesh batters and all of India’s bowlers were among the wickets.

But Liton rode his luck in an innings where he was dropped twice by Kohli — first off Axar and then Ravichandran Ashwin — to score what could be 73 vital runs.

There was little support for him on the other end after opener Zakir Hasan (51) fell soon after lunch until wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan joined him at the crease and the pair compiled an aggressive 46-run stand.

That stand was broken by Axar when he drew Nurul out of his crease to set up an easy stumping for Pant.

Liton then added another brisk 60 runs alongside Taskin Ahmed (31 not out) before he was bowled by a Siraj delivery that nipped back in and found the gap between bat and pad.

Even with those small pockets of resistance, India looked to be in complete control of the match, picking up regular wickets with all their bowlers getting a part of the spoils.

Ashwin had Najmul Hossain trapped leg-before for five in the second over of the day before Siraj removed Bangladesh’s first-innings top-scorer Mominul Haque for the same score.

Unadkat then got skipper Shakib (13) to spoon a length delivery to Gill at cover in his first over of the day.

With the hosts struggling, Axar added to their misery on the stroke of lunch, trapping the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim lbw for nine.

He added two more to his tally after the break, getting Mehidy lbw for nought before dismissing Nurul for 31.

Siraj, Ashwin, and a run-out accounted for the final three wickets.

The Bangladesh bowlers had given their side a glimmer of hope in Friday’s final session, restricting India’s lead to 87 runs just when the visitors looked like they might amass a mammoth score.

Pant and Iyer were running rampant, with both crossing fifty at rapid pace, ending at 93 and 87 respectively, but Bangladesh knocked over the last six Indian wickets for 61 runs to restrict India to 314.

India won the first Test of the two-match series by 188 runs in Chittagong.

India beat Bangladesh to go third in Test championship

CHITTAGONG: Shakib Al Hasan provided brief entertainment for Bangladesh but India kept their cool to win the first Test by 188 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series in Chittagong on Sunday.

The result moved India up into third place in the ICC Test Championship behind Australia and South Africa with seven wins from 13 matches. Bangladesh are in last place.

Set an enormous 513 to win, Bangladesh put up dogged resistance with Zakir Hasan scoring a century on debut on Saturday in a record opening partnership with Najmul Hossain who made 67.

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan made a marauding 84 that included six sixes but he was bowled by Kuldeep Yadav on day five and the hosts quickly folded to be all out for 324 after an hour’s play.

Needing an academic 241 runs with four wickets remaining for the win on day five, Mehidy Hasan signalled an attacking intent for Bangladesh, hitting Mohammed Siraj for four through cover in the first over.

Siraj came back in the next over to force Mehidy to give a catch to Umesh Yadav at backward point, leaving the onus on Shakib to take the game forward.

Kuldeep dismissed Shakib and Ebadot Hossain in successive overs, finishing with figures of 3-73 while Axar Patel claimed the final wicket of Taijul Islam to return with 4-77.

Kuldeep, who also claimed 5-40 in the first innings, was named player of the match.

“Getting runs was hard on the first three days. The way their openers batted, we had to work hard. Our intensity was really high,” said India captain KL Rahul.

“The pitch wasn’t really assisting the bowlers, but they found something… We’ve built this attack over the years. They are showing what quality they have,” he added.

Bangladesh captain Shakib blamed their poor batting for the loss after being skittled for just 150 in the first innings.

“It was a really good wicket to bat on but we didn’t bat well (in the first innings). Playing after five to six months, it wasn’t ideal but there should be no excuses. Lot of credit to India the way they bowled,” he said.

India, who have never lost a Test to Bangladesh, put on 404 in the first innings thanks to 90 from Cheteshwar Pujara and 86 by Shreyas Iyer.

In the second innings Pujara was again India’s rock, reaching 102 not out alongside Shubman Gill who made 110, allowing the visitors to declare on 258-2.

The second Test for the series will begin at Dhaka on December 22.

Virat Kohli surpasses Ricky Ponting with 72nd international century

CHITTAGONG: Star Indian batter Virat Kohli on Saturday surpassed former Australian captain Ricky Ponting in the list of batters with the most international centuries, courtesy of his magnificent 113 against Bangladesh in the third ODI.

Following his 85-ball century, Kohli joined a legendary list of batters with the most international centuries, led by India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar (100), followed by Kohli (72*) and Ponting (71).

Kohli, who came out to bat when India were dealing with a deplorable start; losing their opener Shikhar Dhawan at a mere score of five runs and turned things around with Ishan Kishan, who went on to score the fastest double century in men’s ODIs.

The former Indian captain put on an astounding 290-run partnership with Kishan, during which he also brought up his 44th ODI century.

Notably, Kohli’s 44th ton came after a prolonged drought of three years with his last hundred in 50 overs format was against West Indies in 2019.

Following his century, Kohli also became the first batter to score thousand or more runs against Bangladesh in ODIs.

It is pertinent to mention that Kohli had a frustrating wait for his 71st international century as he failed to amass the feat for almost three years before finally breaking the drought against Afghanistan in the recently-held ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Meanwhile, Kishan’s double century and Kohli’s ton propelled India to hammer Bangladesh by a massive margin of 227 runs as the hosts bundled out for a mere 182 in response to India’s mammoth 409/8.
