India reignite semi-final hopes at Sri Lanka’s disposal

DUBAI: Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Manchana’s half-centuries, coupled with a combined bowling effort led India to a crushing victory over Sri Lanka in the 12th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 here at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Set to chase a daunting 173-run target, Sri Lanka’s strong batting unit unfolded on a meagre 90 in 19.5 overs.

Sri Lanka had a disastrous start to the run chase as they lost three wickets inside three overs including skipper Chamari Athapaththu with just six runs on the board.

Following the slump, Anushka Sanjeewani combined with Kavisha Dilhari to launch a recovery.

The duo stitched a gutsy 37-run partnership for the fourth wicket but until Sanjeewani fell victim to Asha Sobhana in the eighth over after scoring 20 off 22.

Dilhari then put on a brief partnership with Nilakshika Silva (8) before Arundhati Reddy outclassed her in the 12th over. She remained the top-scorer for Sri Lanka with a 22-ball 21.

Ama Kanchana then offered some resilience down the order with a 19-run knock but her efforts were far from pulling off a miracle for Sri Lanka.

Sobhana and Reddy bagged three wickets each for India, followed by Renuka Singh, who picked up two. Shreyanka Patil and Deepti Sharma shared two wickets between them.

India skipper Kaur’s decision to bat first after winning the toss bore fruits as her side piled up 172/3 in the allotted 20 overs.

Openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma gave India a flying start to their innings, courtesy of their 98-run stand, which saw the former amassing her half-century.

The duo dominated Sri Lanka bowlers but perished on successive deliveries in the 13th over.

Mandhana scored a well-crafted 50 off 38 deliveries with the help of four fours and a six while Verma made a 40-ball 43, laced up with four fours.

Following the back-to-back dismissals, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur put on a brief 30-run partnership for the third wicket with Jemimah Rodrigues, who fell victim to Ama Kanchana in the 17th over after a 10-ball 16.

Kaur, fuelled with momentum, continued to dominate Sri Lanka bowlers and brought up her well-deserved half-century with a four on the final delivery of the innings.

She struck eight fours and a six on her way to an unbeaten 27-ball 52.

Kaur was supported at the backend by wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh, who made an unbeaten six off as many deliveries.

For Sri Lanka, Kanchana and skipper Chamari Athapaththu could pick up a wicket apiece.

The 82-run victory lifted India to second in Group A standings of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with four points in three matches while Sri Lanka remained at the bottom with zero points in as many matches.

The 35-year-old batter is currently the third-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket with 13,848 runs, needing only 152 runs to become only the third player to reach the 14000-run mark in the format.

India down Sri Lanka in a super-over thriller to sweep T20I series

PALLEKELE: India came from behind to edge Sri Lanka in a super-over thriller and swept the three-match T20I series 3-0.

The last T20I went right down to the wire as skipper Suryakumar Yadav forced a super-over while defending six runs in the final over.

Washington Sundar bowled the super over for India and he leaked away just two runs before claiming back-to-back wickets to curtail Sri Lanka on a skimpy total.

Set to chase just three, Suryakumar Yadav hit Maheesh Theekshana on the first delivery to seal an astonishing victory for his side.

Put into bat first, India’s inexperienced batting unit struggled against Sri Lanka’s ruthless bowling attack and could accumulate 137/9 in the allotted 20 overs.

The touring party had a poor start to their innings as they lost half of their side with just 48 runs on the board in 8.4 overs.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who offered a notable fight, finally received ample support at the other end in the form of Riyan Parag.

The duo added 54 runs for the sixth wicket before both perished in the 16th over, leaving India reeling at 105/7.

Gill remained the top-scorer for India with his gutsy 39. He conceded 37 deliveries in the process and struck three boundaries while Parag made a brisk 26 off 18 deliveries, peppered with one four and two sixes.

Washington Sundar then gave a late push to India’s total with a quickfire cameo which lasted on the penultimate delivery of the innings. He smashed two fours and a six on his way to an 18-ball 25.

Maheesh Theekshana starred with the ball for Sri Lanka, picking up three wickets, followed by Wanindu Hasaranga, who bagged two. Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Asitha Fernando and Ramesh Mendis chipped in with a wicket apiece.

In response, Sri Lanka were forced to make hard yards to achieve a modest total as India bowlers forced a late comeback.

The home side had a flying start to the pursuit with openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis providing a solid platform with a 58-run stand.

Mendis was the core aggressor of the opening partnership while Nissanka anchored through until his departure in the ninth over. He scored 26 off 27 deliveries.

Kusal Mendis was then involved in yet another fruitful partnership for Sri Lanka when he put together 52 runs for the second wicket with Kusal Perera.

Mendis’ dismissal in the 16th over sparked a collapse as Sri Lanka lost four more wickets at an alarming rate and consequently slipped to 132/6 in 19 overs.

Perera remained the top-scorer for Sri Lanka with a 34-ball 46, closely followed by Mendis, who made 43 off 41.

Sri Lanka sustain major blow ahead of India series

Sri Lanka suffered a major blow ahead of the white-ball home series against India as fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera has been ruled out of the series due to an injury.

According to the Sri Lankan media reports, the nature of the injury is known as of now. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will name a replacement soon, with Asitha Fernando being the front-runner to take Chameera’s place.

Dushmantha Chameera has represented Sri Lanka in 12 Tests, 52 ODIs, and 55 T20Is, taking a total of 143 wickets across formats. However, his career has been plagued with injuries.

Sri Lanka is set to play a three-match T20I series, followed by as many ODIs against India. The T20I series is scheduled to commence on July 26 with the second and third T20Is set to be played on July 27 and 29 respectively.

India’s chief selector reveals why Hardik Pandya was denied T20I captaincy

India chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed the reason for appointing Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain over Hardik Pandya ahead of the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

The T20 World Champions are set to participate in a three-match T20I series in Sri Lanka, commencing on July 26th, with the second and third T20Is scheduled for July 27th and 29th respectively.

Pandya, who served as India’s vice-captain under captain Rohit Sharma during the T20 World Cup, was long considered the next white-ball captain of India.

However, following Sharma’s retirement from T20I cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Suryakumar Yadav as his successor instead of Pandya.

Agarkar explained the reason for appointing Yadav as the captain, highlighting the star batter’s cricketing acumen and team rapport.

“Why Surya was made the captain, because he is one of the deserving candidates,” Agarkar said at a press conference.

“He’s been around the group over the last year, we get feedback from the dressing room a lot. [He has a] good cricket brain, and [is] one of the best T20 batters in the world.

The former pacer drew attention to Pandya’s fitness concerns, mentioning that the decision to not give him captaincy would help in managing his workload to keep him fit.

“We want him [Hardik Pandya] to be the player he can be because those sorts of skillsets are difficult to find. Fitness has been a challenge for him over the last few years,” Agarkar stated.

“His fitness is a challenge and we wanted someone who is available more often than not. Surya has the qualities you need to succeed as a captain. Two years is a bit more time to try and look at some things a bit differently. In this way, we can manage Hardik better.”

The chief selector denied reports that Pandya suddenly lost favour after Gautam Gambhir became the head coach, stating that the move had been discussed for the past few months.

“These conversations don’t happen overnight. We’ve discussed them over the last few months, leading up to the World Cup as well,” he added.

“You get feedback from the dressing room as well, and the biggest thing is that the captain should be on the park. It’s a prerequisite really. Hopefully, Surya does it and so far, there hasn’t been a concern over his T20 batting anyway.”

Notably, Hardik Pandya has captained India in 16 T20I matches, winning 10 of them, while Suryakumar Yadav has led the side in seven games, winning five.

Rohit Sharma to lead India in Sri Lanka ODIs: reports

Senior batter Rohit Sharma is set to cut his vacation short and return early to lead India in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, Indian media reported on Thursday.

India will tour Sri Lanka for a three-match ODI and T20I series. The upcoming white-ball tour will mark Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment after being appointed as India’s head coach, preceding Rahul Dravid, who stepped down after guiding the team to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 glory.

Earlier, reports emerged that senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah would skip the ODI series against Sri Lanka to stretch their break from cricket after leading India to the T20 World Cup 2024 glory.

KL Rahul was expected to lead the side in the absence of senior players, however, recent reports suggest that Sharma will be back as captain for the ODI series.

This decision comes after Gambhir reportedly insisted on having senior players in the series, considering the fact that India will play only six ODIs before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

India inflict second-biggest World Cup defeat on Sri Lanka

MUMBAI: India pacers decimated the Sri Lankan batting attack after Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer to power the home side to hand Sri Lanka the second-biggest World Cup defeat in the 33rd match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase a daunting 358-run target, the Sri Lankan batting lineup unfolded at a mere 55 in 19.4 overs.

Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj gave India a dominant start in the defence as they ran through Sri Lanka’s top order, reducing them to 3/4 in the fourth over.

Charith Assalanka and Angelo Mathews attempted to pull their side of trouble but Mohammed Shami spoiled their plans with a ruthless spell which yielded five wickets and eventually booked Sri Lanka on the meagre total.

Kasun Rajitha remained the top-scorer for Sri Lanka in their dismal show with the bat, followed by Maheesh Theekshana and Mathews scoring 12 each.

The rest of their batters failed to make it into the double figures.

Shami led the bowling attack for India with 5/18, followed by Siraj’s 3/16 while Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja made one scalp each.

After inviting India to bat, Dilshan Madushanka drew first blood for Sri Lanka as he castled Rohit Sharma on the second ball of the innings after he sent the first one for four.

Virat Kohli then joined Shubman Gill and together they scored 189 runs for the second wicket, completing their half-centuries.

Shubman Gill appeared to be in a position to score his maiden World Cup ton, while Virat Kohli was eyeing his 49th ODI century to tie Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI hundreds.

However, Dilshan Madushanka rained on their parade as he returned to the attack and removed both batters in consecutive overs.

Shubman Gill top-scored with a run-a-ball 92, featuring 11 boundaries and two sixes, meanwhile, Virat Kohli scored 88 runs from 92 deliveries with the help of as many boundaries as his partner.

Shreyas Iyer, came down to bat at number four and added 60 runs for the fourth wicket with KL Rahul, who scored 21 runs during his 19-ball stay at the crease.

Iyer added another 57 runs with Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket but was dismissed by Madushanka after hitting back-to-back sixes.

Iyers’s blistering knock of 82 runs from 56 balls featured three boundaries and six sixes.

Jadeja on the other end scored a brief 35-run cameo off 24 balls before being run-out on the last ball of the innings.

Other than Madushanka’s five wickets, Dushmantha Chameera was the only bowler to pick a wicket for Sri Lanka, while two batters got run-out.
