India crush Sri Lanka to win Asia Cup 2023

COLOMBO: Mohammed Siraj’s six-wicket demolition job underlined his utter dominance of an inept Sri Lanka as India raced up to win the Asia Cup 2023.

Set to chase a meagre 51, India comfortably completed the pursuit in 6.1 overs without losing a single wicket to lift their eighth Asia Cup title.

India’s new opening pair of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan carried the momentum and dominated the Sri Lankan bowlers to script a statement victory for the former champions.

Gill top-scored for India in the Asia Cup 2023 final with a 19-ball 27 which featured six boundaries while Kishan scored 23 not out in 18 balls.

Opting to bat first, the Sri Lankan batting lineup failed completely and was bundled out for a paltry 51 in the 16th over.

The home side lost their opener Kusal Perera (0) in the first over with just one run on the board.

What followed was a total annihilation by Mohammed Siraj who picked up four wickets — Pathum Nissanka (2), Sadeera Samarawickrama (0), Charith Asalanka (0) and Dhananjaya de Silva (4) — in the fourth over to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 12/5.

Sri Lanka failed to recover from Siraj’s demolition and he came back to add further to their misery by dismissing skipper Dasun Shanaka in his next over and completing his five-fer.

Wicketkeeper batter Kusal Mendis, who hung on for Sri Lanka then put on the highest partnership of the Asia Cup 2023 final for the home side with Dunith Wellalage before Siraj struck again.

Kusal Mendis remained the top-scorer for Sri Lanka with a 34-ball 17 which featured three boundaries.

Following Siraj’s dominance, Hardik Pandya put the final nail in the coffin by getting rid of the Sri Lankan batting tail.

He removed Dunith Wellalage (8) before wrapping up Sri Lanka’s dismal innings in his next over by dismissing Pramod Madushan (1) and Matheesha Pathirana (0).

Young all-rounder Dushan Hemantha remained unbeaten with a 15-ball 13 and remained the only Sri Lankan batter to amass double figures beside Kusal Mendis.

Notably, Sri Lanka’s 50-run total is now the lowest total in the Asia Cup history, breaking the previous record held by Bangladesh, who were dismissed for 87 runs against Pakistan in 2000.

Furthermore, Sri Lanka’s 50-run total is the lowest in men’s ODI history in a tournament final. It is also the third time this year that Sri Lanka have been bowled out for less than a hundred in ODIs.

Mohammed Siraj led the bowling attack for India in the Asia Cup 2023 final with a 6/21, followed by Hardik Pandya’s 3/3 while Jasprit Bumrah had a wicket to his name.

India edge Sri Lanka to reach Asia Cup final as Pakistan still in race

COLOMBO: Kuldeep Yadav once again spearheaded India’s bowling attack with a four-fer and powered his side into the Asia Cup 2023 final with a 41-run victory over Sri Lanka.

India’s 41-run victory marked the end of Sri Lanka’s 13-match winning streak while also boasting Pakistan’s chances to qualify for the Asia Cup 2023 final.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka, both with two points each in as many matches will now engage in a virtual semi-final on Thursday.

Notably, if the all-important clash gets washed out then Sri Lanka will join India in the final of the Asia Cup 2023 due to a superior net run rate.

In a low-scoring thriller on Tuesday, Sri Lanka were set to chase a modest 214-run target but the home side could manage 172 in reply despite a fighting knock by Dunith Wellalage.

Sri Lanka had a deplorable start to their run chase as they lost three wickets for just 25 runs in the eighth over, courtesy of a dominating opening spell by Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

Sadeera Samarawickrama then put together a brief 43-run partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva before falling to India’s star with the ball Kuldeep Yadav. He played a cautious 17-run knock including a boundary.

Sri Lanka then lost two more wickets in quick succession and consequently slipped to 99/6 in 25.1 overs.

Dhananjaya de Silva and Dunith Wellalage then put together a crucial 63-run partnership to bring Sri Lanka back into the game.

The home side were in a solid position before Dhananjaya de Silva threw away his wicket while charging on Ravindra Jadeja in the 38th over when Sri Lanka still needed 52 runs.

Dhananjaya de Silva scored a sensible 41 off 66 deliveries, laced with five boundaries.

Following his dismissal, Sri Lanka lost wickets at an alarming rate and were soon bundled out on 172 in the 42nd over.

Dunith Wellalage remained stranded at the crease with an unbeaten 46-ball 42.

Kuldeep Yadav led the bowling attack for India with 4/43, followed by Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, taking two wickets each while Mohammed Siraj and Hardik Pandya had a wicket apiece to their names.

Opting to bat first, India could put a paltry 213 on the board before being bundled out in the final over despite their skipper Rohit Sharma’s half-century.

India fuelled with momentum courtesy of their monumental 228-run victory over Pakistan in the previous Asia Cup 2023 fixture on Monday, got off to a flying start with an 80-run opening stand.

Skipper Sharma dominated the first-wicket partnership, India’s highest in the match, with a brisk knock.

Meanwhile, his opening partner Shubman Gill, who was struggling to get going finally perished in the 12th over after a scratchy 19-run knock which came off 25 deliveries.

Dunith Wellalage then turned the game on its head when he removed star batter Virat Kohli (3) and Rohit Sharma in his successive overs as India slipped to 91/3.

Rohit remained the top-scorer for India with a 48-ball 53 which featured seven boundaries and two sixes.

Following the slump, India’s centurion, in their last Asia Cup 2023 fixture, KL Rahul and in-form Ishan Kishan anchored the innings with a 63-run partnership before Wellalage struck again.

The left-arm spinner dismissed Rahul caught and bowled to draw a much-needed success for Sri Lanka. Rahul scored a cautious 61-ball 33 with the help of one boundary and a six.

Wellalage’s spin bowling partner Charith Asalanka then added further to the misery of India as he soon got rid of Ishan Kishan to leave India reeling at 170/5.

Kishan could score 39 off 44, hitting two boundaries.

India’s lower order appeared clueless against the spin-packed Sri Lankan bowling attack as the home side seized control by restricting India to 186/9 in 42.2 overs.

All-rounder Axar Patel and number 11 Mohammed Siraj then added a valuable 27 runs amid their 10th wicket partnership before the former mistimed one off Maheesh Theekshana on the first delivery of the final over.

Axar played an important 26-run knock in 36 deliveries while Siraj scored five not out.

Dunith Wellalage spearheaded Sri Lanka’s bowling attack in the 10th Asia Cup 2023 fixture with a five-wicket haul, followed by Charith Asalanka’s 4/18 while Theekshana made one scalp.

Kohli’s 166 helps India crush Sri Lanka by record 317 runs

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Virat Kohli smashed an unbeaten 166 to help India beat Sri Lanka by 317 runs and record the highest-ever victory margin in a one-day international as they swept the series 3-0 on Sunday.

Kohli’s third century in his last four matches and a 116 by opener Shubman Gill powered India to 390-5 in Thiruvananthapuram.

Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj then returned impressive figures of 4-32 as India bowled out the tourists for 72 in 22 overs as India went past New Zealand’s 290-run thrashing of Ireland in 2008.

A 131-run second-wicket stand between Gill and Kohli stood out after India elected to bat first.

Gill put on 95 runs for the opening wicket with skipper Rohit Sharma, who made 42, to set the tone for the team’s batting domination.

Rohit missed out on a fifty after he fell to Chamika Karunaratne but Gill kept up the attack with Kohli and raised his second ODI hundred, celebrating it with a fist bump.

Gill smashed Jeffrey Vandersay for four fours in the over after the ton, but was soon bowled off a slower delivery from Kasun Rajitha.

“King Kohli” put on another century partnership with Shreyas Iyer, who hit 38, and went on to record the ton with his arms and bat raised to an applauding crowd.

The ball before Kohli got his hundred saw a nasty collision at the square-leg boundary between Vandersay and Ashen Bandara, with both fielders stretchered off.

Dunith Wellalage came in as a concussion substitute for Vandersay and batted for the tourists at number eight.

Kohli changed gears after his 46th ODI century — three behind Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49 — as he smashed Karunaratne for two successive sixes.

Kohli, who surpassed Sri Lankan great Mahela Jayawardene’s 12,650 ODI runs to enter the top five all-time run getters, reached his 150 in 106 balls and finished off with 13 fours and eight sixes.

Sri Lanka were never in the chase after Mohammed Siraj struck thrice in his first five overs including the wickets of Avishka Fernando, for one, and Kusal Mendis, bowled on four.

The tourists kept losing wickets to Siraj’s pace and swing and the quick also ran out Karunaratne with a direct throw that caught the batsman off guard and out of his crease at the striker’s end.

Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav picked two wickets each to flatten Sri Lanka’s batting with 28 overs to spare, with the tourists losing nine wickets and injured Bandara not batting.

Rahul, Kuldeep give India unassailable lead over Sri Lanka

KOLKATA: Sri Lanka succumbed to their second successive defeat as Kuldeep Yadav and KL Rahul-inspired India overcame a few hiccups to clinch the second ODI with a four-wicket victory and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

The wicketkeeper-batter Rahul played a pivotal role in guiding India home in a tricky run-chase that embarked with a poor start as the hosts lost four wickets for a mere 86 runs in the 15th over with captain Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli perishing cheaply.

Rahul stitched an anchoring fifth-wicket 75-run partnership with Hardik Pandya, who fell after a crucial 36-run knock in 53 deliveries that featured four boundaries.

Following his departure, Rahul then put on another vital partnership that powered India closer to triumph as his sixth-wicket stand with Axar Patel added 30 runs.

The right-handed batter top-scored for India with an unbeaten 64-run knock in 103 deliveries, laced with six boundaries, while India’s hero with the ball also chipped in the run chase with an unbeaten run-a-ball 10.

Chamika Karunaratne and Lahiru Kumara bagged two wickets each, while Kasun Rajitha and Dhananjaya de Silva made one scalp each.

Batting first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka endured a fierce attack from Kuldeep and Mohammed Siraj, who picked up three wickets each as the touring side bundled for 215 in the 40th over.

At one stage, Sri Lanka were looking pretty solid to put up a big total amid the second-wicket partnership between Nuwanidu Fernando and wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis as the duo added 73 runs.

Kuldeep then provided a much-needed breakthrough to India as he trapped Mendis in his legs for 34 which consequently, triggered the touring side’s batting collapse.

Fernando unluckily became a part of the frustrating collapse as he got run out soon after amassing his half-century. The young batter remained the top-scorer for Sri Lanka with 50 off 63 deliveries.

Sri Lanka then could not recover from the collapse and was soon bundled out for a mere 215 despite a fighting 32-run knock by Dunith Wellalage as the remaining batters seemed clueless against the Indian bowling attack.

Kuldeep and Siraj claimed three wickets each for India, while Umran Malik bagged two.

Kohli’s ton fires India to a thumping triumph over Sri Lanka in first ODI

GUWAHATI: India’s star batter Virat Kohli amassed his 45th ODI and 73rd international century to power his side to a dominating 67-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series here on Tuesday.

The right-handed batter survived two dropped catches on 52 and 81 before going on to hit a record-equalling ODI century and played a pivotal role in the team’s triumph.

Batting first after being invited by the Sri Lankan captain, the Indian batting line-up displayed a combined effort to post a massive 373/7 in their allotted 50 overs.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and his opening partner Shubman Gill laid a solid foundation as they put on a 143-run opening partnership with both scoring half-centuries.

Rohit, who missed India’s 2-1 T20I series triumph, scripted a strong start to the ODI series as he scored a quickfire 83 off just 67 deliveries with the help of nine boundaries and three sixes, while Gill fell after scoring a 60-ball 70.

Following the openers’ departure, Kohli Kohli stood firm and despite losing partners at the other end, carried on charging the Sri Lankan bowlers.

The right-handed batter top-scored for India with a record-setting 113 off a mere 87 deliveries that witnessed the ball crossing the fence 13 times including a maximum.

Besides the trio, wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul remained the notable run-getter with his vital 39-run knock and stitched a 90-run partnership with Kohli for the fourth wicket.

Kasun Rajitha made three scalps for Sri Lanka but leaked aplenty while Chamika Karunaratne, Dasun Shanaka and Dhananjaya de Silva struck out a batter apiece.

Set to chase a mammoth 378, Sri Lanka could manage to amass 306/8 despite a fighting century from their skipper Shanaka, who remained unbeaten on 108 off just 88 deliveries including 12 boundaries and three sixes.

The touring side had a dismal start to the run chase as they lost two quick wickets including Kusal Mendis bagging a golden duck.

Nissanka (23) made an effort to revive the pursuit with his valiant batting and a 72-run fourth-wicket partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva, who scored 47.

Sri Lanka slumped to 206-8 in the 38th over, but Shanaka kept the game alive with an unbroken 100-run stand with Rajitha; also bringing up his century in style with a four and a six on the last two deliveries.

Umran Malik led the bowling attack for India with 3/58, while Mohammed Siraj bagged two wickets.

India’s Bumrah ruled out of Sri Lanka ODI series

NEW DELHI: Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been pulled out of the three one-day internationals against Sri Lanka, the country’s cricket board said Monday, after being added to the initial squad.

The two teams will begin the 50-overs series on Tuesday in Guwahati after the hosts, led by Hardik Pandya, clinched the three-match Twenty20 series 2-1.

Bumrah, 29, has been out of action since September and missed the Twenty20 World Cup, where India lost to England in the semi-finals.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said Bumrah “will need some more time to build bowling resilience” and the decision was taken “as a precautionary measure”.

The selectors have not named any replacement for Bumrah, called the “Yorker King” for his ability to bowl the toe-crushing delivery.

Regular captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli return to the ODI team, which will be preparing for this year’s 50-over World Cup at home.

India’s updated ODI squad: Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (vice-capt), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.

‘Game-changer’ Suryakumar powers India to T20 series win over Sri Lanka

RAJKOT: Suryakumar Yadav, the world’s leading Twenty20 batsman, said Saturday he was thriving in his role as a “game-changer” after smashing a blazing century in India’s series-clinching 91-run win over Sri Lanka.

The hosts rode on Suryakumar’s unbeaten 112 off 51 deliveries to post 228-5 after electing to bat first in the series decider in Rajkot.

India then bowled out Sri Lanka for 137 in 16.4 overs for a 2-1 triumph to extend their unbeaten record in bi-lateral series to 12 on home turf which stretches back to February 2019.

Suryakumar, known as a 360-degree player for his ability to play all around the ground, stood out with his third T20 hundred — in 45 balls — as he stamped his class as the world’s number one batsman in the format.

“It’s really important to put pressure on yourself when you are preparing for a game. If you do that in practice, it gets a little easier while playing the game,” man of the match Suryakumar said.

Asked about his conversations with coach Rahul Dravid, a batting great in the classical mould, Suryakumar said, “He just lets me enjoy myself, whatever I am doing.

“Whatever situation I go in he tells me ‘just enjoy yourself, express yourself and try and be the game-changer on a given day’.”

Skipper Hardik Pandya praised Suryakumar, known as ‘SKY’, saying, “He has been surprising everyone and making everyone know that batting is very easy.

“If I am a bowler, I will be disheartened with the shots he plays. He has played blinders after blinders, which is now becoming a habit.”

The T20 sensation smashed seven fours and nine sixes including three off his trademark scoop shot over fine leg to entertain the raucous home crowd.

India lost two wickets inside six overs after electing to bat first but Suryakumar and Shubman Gill, who hit 46 off 36 deliveries, put on 111 runs to lay the foundations for the total.

‘Lot of Positives’

Left-arm quick Dilshan Madushanka struck in the opening over to send back the left-handed Ishan Kishan, caught at slip for one by Dhananjaya de Silva.

Rahul Tripathi, 31, who made his debut in the previous match, then hit back with Gill for company as he hit Maheesh Theekshana for three fours in the fifth over.

Tripathi smashed fast bowler Chamika Karunaratne for two successive sixes but got caught out in an attempt to get another boundary. He made 35 off 16 deliveries.

Suryakumar, who reached his fifty in 26 balls, then took charge with his all-round hitting including three sixes with his scoop shot over fine leg.

Gill joined in the charge as he and Suryakumar smashed 23 runs in the 14th over from Theekshana.

But after three fours and two sixes in his 36-ball knock, Gill was bowled by leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and two more wickets fell before Suryakumar kept up the charge.

In reply, Kusal Mendis started briskly but fell to Axar Patel’s left-arm spin for 23 in the fifth over.

The left-handed Axar was named man of the series for his three wickets and 117 runs in the three matches.

Wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals with Pandya, fellow quick Umran Malik and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal taking two each.

Left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh took three including the final wicket.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka, who helped the tourists bounce back from their opening loss in the previous match, hit 23 off 17 balls before departing.

Shanaka said he is “happy” with his performance and there were a “lot of positives” to be taken from the series.

India’s top stars, including regular captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli, will return for the three one-day internationals between the two teams starting Tuesday.

Shanaka’s fireworks power Sri Lanka to thump India in second T20I

PUNE: Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka led the way with a record-breaking half-century and two wickets to script a series-levelling victory over India in the second T20I of the three-match series on Thursday.

Batting first, Sri Lanka exploit India’s bowling errors and raised a mammoth 206/6 in the allotted 20 overs at the back of half-centuries from skipper Shanaka and opening batter Kusal Mendis.

The touring side enjoyed a decent start to their innings as they raised 55/0 at the end of the powerplay while the second over of the innings from Arshdeep Singh, who bowled a hat-trick of no-balls turned out to be a momentum booster for Sri Lanka.

Mendis, who appeared to be in top notch, brought up his vital half-century with a six to Yuzvendra Chahal but the latter struck soon after to provide India with a much-needed breakthrough.

The wicketkeeper batter scored 52 off just 31 deliveries, laced with three boundaries and four sixes.

Sri Lanka then began to lose wickets at regular intervals and soon slipped to 110/4 in the 14th over with another opening batter Pathum Nissanka also walking back after a cautious 33 off 35.

Left-handed batter Charith Asalanka then stitched an important 28-run partnership with Shanaka before India’s pace sensation Umran Malik brought an end to the former’s quickfire cameo of 37 runs in just 19 deliveries.

Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva’s golden duck pushed Sri Lanka further on the backfoot before skipper Shanaka stood up for his team and turned the tables on India with late fireworks.

The right-handed batter took on the Indian bowlers in the death overs and smashed the fastest half-century for Sri Lanka in just 20 balls that included two boundaries and six sixes.

Shanaka’s quickfire knock powered Sri Lanka to finish their first innings at a massive total of 206/6.

Umran was the pick of the bowlers for India as he picked up three wickets but leaked 48 runs while Axar Patel was economical for his 4/24.

Set to chase 207, India fell 16 runs short despite a threatening 91-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Patel and top-ranked Suryakumar Yadav.

Sri Lankan bowlers put on a show in defence of the massive total and ran through India’s top order.

Kasun Rajitha breathed fire in the second over of the run chase as he removed two Indian batters – Ishan Kishan (2) and Shubman Gill (5).

The wickets kept tumbling for the hosts as skipper Pandya (12) and Shubman Gill (9) also fell as they looked in deep trouble at 57/5 in the 10th over.

However, all-rounder Patel glimmered a ray of hope for India when he smashed three consecutive sixes off Hasaranga before Yadav joined the thrashing.

Coming to bat at number seven, Axar imitated Shanaka as he too raised his fifty on just 20 deliveries before Yadav also joined the former with a six.

The top-ranked T20I batter, however, soon departed after his half-century and Shivam Mavi began to launch a counterattack afterwards but the required run rate kept mounting and India left 21 runs to chase in the final over.

Skipper Shanaka once again stood up for his team and bowled the final over in a crisp situation and struck out Axar and then Mavi off the final ball.

Following Sri Lanka’s victory, the three-match T20I series will now be decided on Saturday.
