Kamran Akmal blames lack of T20 evolution for Pakistan’s World Cup exit

Former wicket-keeper batter Kamran Akmal has delivered a blunt verdict on Pakistan’s ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, arguing that the team’s inability to evolve with the modern game left them trailing behind the competition.

Pakistan’s shortcomings were laid bare during their lacklustre T20 World Cup campaign, which ended on Saturday when the team failed to reach the semi-finals.

From the captain Salman Agha, who was criticised for not being a T20 player, to slow batting rates and the use of all-rounders not up to the job, Pakistan were shown to be behind the times in the rapid-fire format.

Kamran Akmal believes there is a huge gulf in standard between Pakistan and the top sides such as India, West Indies, South Africa and England.

“Other teams have evolved to the demands of Twenty20 cricket, but neither our team nor our players meet those standards,” Akmal told AFP.

“It is like other teams are playing on the moon and we are on Earth. We only beat smaller teams but lose to top teams.”

Pakistan had high hopes for the T20 World Cup 2026 after sweeping Australia 3-0 in a pre-tournament series.

They boasted a quintet of spinners that should have been suited to the turning pitches in Sri Lanka, where they played all their matches.

But they received a rude awakening in their first match against the Netherlands when they squeezed home by three wickets in the final over, thanks to Faheem Ashraf’s 11-ball 29.

Like most of his predecessors at World Cups, Agha blundered in the pressure-cooker match against India, which only went ahead after the Pakistan government U-turned on a boycott just days before the encounter.

Agha won the toss and asked India to bat. The decision backfired badly as Pakistan conceded 175 and were hammered by 61 runs.

Agha inexplicably held back his mystery spinner and chief weapon, Usman Tariq, to the 11th over, by which time opener Ishan Kishan had scored his match-shaping 77, and India were well on their way to a winning total.

“How on earth did you bowl at a venue which was suited to batting first?” questioned former Pakistan player Basit Ali. “After India scored 175, our batters failed to handle the pressure of a chase.”

Agha also held back Tariq’s second over against England, after he took a wicket in his first, allowing captain Harry Brook to build a sparkling match-winning century.

“It was weak captaincy from Agha,” said Kamran Akmal, who also took aim at the head coach Mike Hesson and the selectors.

“We were also not helped by head coach Mike Hesson, who has an obsession for bit-and-pieces all-rounders who were neither complete bowlers, nor good batters.”

Pakistan’s insistence on sticking with the out-of-sorts Babar Azam did nothing to help their shaky batting. The star batter’s slow scoring at number four interrupted the side’s rhythm.

He was dropped for the final match against Sri Lanka on Saturday, where Pakistan finally posted a total in excess of 200, but it proved too little too late as New Zealand progressed on net run rate.

Kamran Akmal urges Rizwan to evolve after being retired out

Former wicket-keeper batter Kamran Akmal shared his thoughts on Mohammad Rizwan’s retired-out dismissal during the Big Bash League (BBL) 15 fixture.

Rizwan scored a sluggish 26 from 23 balls with the help of two fours and a six before Melbourne Renegades skipper Will Sutherland called the batter back to the pavilion.

The video set social media abuzz with fans questioning the decision to retire Rizwan.

Speaking on the incident on a local news channel, Akmal emphasized the demands of modern-day cricket while noting that the decision should not have benn taken.

“Absolutely. I also believe this should not happen; he is our top player and a proven performer. You have to realise how fast these leagues are.

Every country is now following the modern-day approach to cricket, so it is vital to develop yourself accordingly,” he remarked.

He also criticized Rizwan’s approach and mentioned the Australian mindset in a shorter format of the game.

“Rizwan has been playing with the same mindset since he started in T20s. In Australia, they view the game through a specific lens. We have seen similar tactical moves in the ILT20 and the IPL,” he added.

“I have been saying for three or four years that the way he is playing will make the future very difficult. Modern-day cricket is moving at a rapid pace, and you must adapt.

It should not have happened to our best player and the Pakistan captain, but he has, in a sense, given them a reason to make that call,” Akmal concluded.

For the unversed, Mohammad Rizwan is going through a horror run in BBL 15 as having scored 167 runs in eight matches at a modest average of 20.87 and a strike rate of 101.82.

Kamran Akmal slams ‘unfair’ treatment of Mustafizur Rahman

Former Pakistan cricketer Kamran Akmal has voiced concerns over the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) treatment of Bangladesh player Mustafizur Rahman.

Mustafizur was released by the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2026 season on the BCCI’s instructions.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) responded strongly to the development, with the country’s youth and sports adviser Asif Nazrul stating that the board would seek an explanation over Mustafizur’s sudden exclusion from the IPL.

Speaking at the Pakistan Celebrity T10 League (PCCL) season 2 event, Akmal talked about Rahman, noting that it was unfair to the pacer.

“Until you maintain good relations with your neighbors, you cannot move forward,” Kamran Akmal said.

“What happened with Mustafizur Rahman was completely wrong. If a single player could not be provided security, how could the entire team be guaranteed safety?” he questioned.

He urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take difficult decisions.

“Even Pakistani players in other countries face visa issues. The same thing happened during the 2023 World Cup. ICC needs to understand these matters now.”

Meanwhile, former spinner Saeed Ajmal talked about the Indian team not visiting Pakistan.

“The whole world comes to Pakistan to play. Why is India so reluctant to come here? Ajmal questioned.

Former all-rounder Abdul Razzaq praised the inaugural PCCL event, calling the first edition a “great success.”

Razzaq highlighted that, for the first time in a long while, Pakistan’s Shaheens and Under-19 players have received so much cricket.

“The future of Pakistan cricket is bright. The performances of the Under-19s and Shaheens speak for themselves,” he said.

On the changing cricketing landscape, he observed that India’s actions are now visible to everyone, emphasizing that personal matters should not interfere with the game.

“We hope that these steps will contribute to the improvement of cricket. We have always seen that cricket sends a message of peace,” he added.

Responding to questions about players and interactions, Razzaq added that the decision not to shake hands was directed by the board.

Kamran Akmal predicts Pakistan’s playing XI for first T20I

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has unveiled his predicted playing XI for the national team’s opening T20I against South Africa, scheduled later today at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Akmal announced his playing XI on his official X account, featuring uncapped spin bowler Usman Tariq and excluding leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed from the lineup.

He also included pacer Mohammad Wasim Jr, who has featured in 29 T20Is for Pakistan and claimed 36 wickets at an economy of 8.14.

He has been part of several recent squads of Pakistan but has struggled to lock down a permanent spot in the playing XI. His last appearance came against New Zealand in Christchurch in January 2024.

Tariq has garnered attention for his impressive performances in franchise leagues. He represented the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he took 12 wickets in 10 matches.

Following that, he made a strong impact in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025, finishing as the second-highest wicket-taker with 20 wickets in 10 matches for the champion team, Trinbago Knight Riders.

Akmal’s predicted XI also includes Babar Azam, who is set to make his long-awaited return to international cricket.

The prolific right-hander stands just shy of surpassing India’s Rohit Sharma to become the leading run-scorer in T20I history.

Former cricketers back Pakistan amid strong India challenge in Asia Cup 2025

KARACHI: Former Pakistan cricketers Kamran Akmal and Umar Gul have shared their thoughts on the forthcoming high-octane clash between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025.

The match is scheduled to be played on September 14 at the Dubai Cricket Stadium, with both teams facing each other for the first time since the escalation in May 2025.

Speaking during a private event in the metropolitan city, former wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal expressed concerns over Pakistan’s team combination and shed light on the marquee clash against India.

“India team is looking very strong on paper. I wish Pakistan could win against India, but the national team will have to work hard for that,” he said.

“The bowling unit is not looking complete according to the conditions, he said. “If spinners won’t be played in these conditions, then where will they play?”

He pointed out that Pakistan is playing with just three frontline bowlers, which could be costly.

“Afghanistan beat us, and the UAE gifted us a match. Mistakes like these cannot be repeated in the Asia Cup. Pakistan will need to defeat not only smaller teams but also stronger sides to succeed,” he remarked.

Kamran Akmal also highlighted the wicket-keeper Mohammad Haris’ batting position and Saim Ayub’s role in the team.

“Haris’ advantage is only in the top three positions. Saim Ayub should bat for the next four to five years, and after that, he should contribute with his bowling,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Umar Gul also admitted that the Indian team is looking strong, noting that in T20 cricket, a single player could turn the match on its head.

“We should support the Pakistan team. The Indian team looks strong, but it is reminded that in T20 cricket, a single good batting or bowling performance can turn the match,” Gul said.

Gul emphasized that in Pakistan’s history, major tournament victories have always been achieved through strong bowling, and emphasized the absence of key players for both teams.

“All the major tournaments won have been won by bowlers. Fans will surely miss stars like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma in this event,” said the 42-year-old.

Former cricketer questions Babar, Rizwan’s omission from T20I team

Former wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal has questioned the absence of the experienced duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from the Pakistan T20I squad.

Speaking during a private event, Kamran shared his thoughts on the team selection for the Asia Cup 2025 and Tri-Series against Afghanistan and the UAE.

He also questioned the absence of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from the T20I team.

“Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan should have been part of the team,” he remarked.

The former wicket-keeper also reiterated his earlier statement about trying new players.

“They have performed in the past, and I had said these players — Babar, Shaheen [Afridi], Shadab [Khan], and Haris [Rauf] — should be removed from the T20I team and new players should be given a chance,” he said.

The 43-year-old highlighted the significance of marquee events and the need for senior players in bigger tournaments, while stressing the importance of these events.

“These players will be automatically chosen for major ICC and ACC tournaments,” he added.

“The team was not formed considering the difficult conditions and the pressure situation. I think a better team could have been formed, and this has been ongoing for several years,” Kamran Akmal concluded.

Earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced a 17-member squad, excluding Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s last T20I appearance came in December 2024 against South Africa. Since then, neither player has been in the team’s plan for the shorter format amid criticism of their strike rates.

Salman Ali Agha will lead the side with experienced players such as Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf included in the squad.

Additionally, young talents Saim Ayub, Khushdil Shah, and Hussain Talat are also part of the squad.

For the unversed,  the tri-series, scheduled to run from August 29 to September 7, will be held entirely at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium and will see each team face the others twice, culminating in the final on September 7.

The series will serve as a crucial tune-up for the Asia Cup 2025, also to be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28 in the T20 format.

Kamran Akmal’s blazing ton helps Pakistan Champions crush West Indies

LEEDS: Kamran Akmal rolled back the years with a scintillating century as Pakistan Champions outclassed West Indies Champions by 49 runs in their World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 clash at Headingley on Saturday.

Batting first, Pakistan Champions piled up a formidable 200-4, thanks to a breathtaking 113 off just 62 balls by Kamran Akmal.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batter smashed 13 fours and five sixes to anchor the innings after an explosive 65-run opening stand with Sharjeel Khan, who chipped in with a 14-ball 21.

Sohaib Maqsood (17) and skipper Mohammad Hafeez (23 off 18) played supporting roles as Pakistan Champions crossed the 200-run mark.

Asif Ali stayed unbeaten on 10 off 10 in the final overs.

West Indies Champions struggled to keep up with the asking rate in the chase, managing only 151-7 in their 20 overs.

Chadwick Walton top-scored with a 30-ball 42, while William Perkins and Dwayne Bravo added 30 each.

Ashley Nurse contributed a 25-run cameo, but it was never going to be enough for the West Indies Champions.

Rumman Raees ripped through the top order with a sensational opening spell, grabbing 3-4 in three overs. Aamer Yamin and Sohail Tanvir bagged two wickets apiece to stifle the Windies’ hopes.

The comprehensive win puts Pakistan Champions on top of the WCL 2025 points table with seven points from four matches. West Indies Champions, meanwhile, remain on two points after as many games.

Former cricketer questions Azhar Mahmood’s appointment as interim coach

Former wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has come down hard on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over its latest move to name Azhar Mahmood as the interim head coach of the national red-ball side.

The PCB, on Monday, announced that the former all-rounder would take over as the acting red-ball head coach for the national team until the end of his current contract.

Mahmood, who has previously served as assistant coach, steps in as the latest addition to what has been a revolving door of coaching appointments.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kamran Akmal expressed his frustration with the decision, likening it to the board’s much-debated move of appointing Mickey Arthur as team director while he continued his county commitments.

“I just don’t understand the logic behind this decision,” Akmal said bluntly.

“It’s the same as when they made Mickey Arthur director of cricket but allowed him to work in county cricket. That didn’t make sense then, and this doesn’t make sense now.”

Akmal pointed to the instability such ad-hoc appointments have caused within Pakistan cricket and argued that this trend of temporary arrangements is contributing to the team’s ongoing struggles.

“Arthur’s appointment opened the door to problems in Pakistan cricket, and we’re seeing the same pattern now,” he added.

“Later it was Mohammad Hafeez, then Aaqib Javed, now Azhar Mahmood, it’s a cycle that keeps repeating.”

Urging the PCB to make long-term, professional decisions, Kamran Akmal warned against a ‘please-all’ approach that, in his view, rewards loyalty over merit and vision.

“These are not the signs of a serious setup. When the PCB starts acting professionally, it won’t need to resort to such compromises or patchwork appointments,” he said.

He also questioned whether Azhar’s appointment was more about ticking boxes than building a stable coaching structure.

“Everyone’s been accommodated at some point, and now Azhar has also been rewarded,” Akmal remarked.

“If you’re going to make him the head coach, then give him the full-time role with proper authority. Otherwise, what’s the point?”

Former cricketer backs Babar Azam, Rizwan’s exclusion from T20I team

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has thrown his weight behind the decision to exclude star batters Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from the national T20I team.

Babar and Rizwan were dropped earlier this year for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, a decision the selection committee described as a move to test younger players ahead of the T20 World Cup.

The star batters have also been left out of the ongoing home series against Bangladesh.

Speaking on a recent podcast, Kamran Akmal addressed the growing speculation that both batters might be permanently phased out of Pakistan’s T20 plans.

“That’s absolutely the right decision,” said the 43-year-old. “I believe this should happen because these players are more suited for the longer format of the game.”

Taking it a step further, Akmal even questioned their place in the ODI setup, suggesting that Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan should focus solely on red-ball cricket moving forward.

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

“After another six months, they should be sidelined from ODIs too. Pakistan hardly plays Test matches these days — no one’s even talking about them — but if real players are made anywhere, it’s through Test cricket,” he remarked.

The former wicket-keeper reiterated the foundational value of red-ball cricket, asserting that mastering Test cricket improves a cricketer’s game across all formats.

“You can’t just play T20 and expect to be great at Test cricket too. If someone plays Test matches, they can handle ODIs and T20Is as well,” Kamran Akmal added.

It’s worth noting that a new-look Pakistan side, under Salman Ali Agha’s captaincy, managed to win only one game during the five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

However, they had a strong start to their current home series against Bangladesh, winning the first match by 37 runs.

‘Not captain material’: Former wicketkeeper questions Rizwan’s leadership skills

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has criticised Mohammad Rizwan, stating bluntly that the Multan Sultans skipper is “not captain material” and should never be given such responsibilities again.

Speaking on a private sports show, Akmal didn’t hold back in his assessment of Rizwan’s captaincy, particularly after Multan Sultans’ crushing defeat at the hands of Peshawar Zalmi in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10.

“If the Pakistan Cricket Board has the courage, they should make a firm decision and never give such powers to him [Rizwan] again. He is simply not captain material,” said Akmal.

He was especially scathing about Rizwan’s tactical choices in the game against Zalmi, where Sultans were thoroughly outplayed, losing by seven wickets with a staggering 42 balls to spare.

“The way he set up the team against Peshawar and the manner in which they played was beyond comprehension,” he said. “Now, after what happened against Peshawar Zalmi, everyone is talking.”

The criticism has surged following a lacklustre season for Multan, led by captain Mohammad Rizwan.

Their PSL 10 campaign began on a disheartening note with a four-wicket defeat against the Karachi Kings, a match that left fans reeling.

The struggles continued as they faced off against the reigning champions, Islamabad United, only to succumb yet again.

The disappointment deepened with another loss, this time at the hands of Peshawar Zalmi, further dampening the spirits of the Multan supporters.

Despite a fleeting moment of resurgence marked by a convincing 33-run triumph over the Lahore Qalandars, the Sultans’ hopes quickly unravelled, revealing the harsh reality of their downward spiral.

The team suffered a staggering defeat in their next four matches, imperilling their playoff ambitions and marking a stark contrast to their past PSL performances, where they had stood as one of the league’s most formidable contenders under the astute leadership of Mohammad Rizwan.
