Babar Azam becomes fifth Pakistani player to achieve THIS landmark

FAISALABAD: Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam reached yet another career milestone on Saturday, becoming only the fifth player from the country to surpass 15,000 runs in international cricket.

The 31-year-old achieved the feat during the ongoing third and final ODI against South Africa at Iqbal Stadium, working a single off Bjorn Fortuin to move to 23.

The shot not only brought applause from the crowd but also took his overall tally to 15,000 international runs, an achievement that places him among Pakistan’s batting greats.

With this, Babar joins an illustrious list featuring Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, and Javed Miandad, the only other Pakistan batters to have reached the landmark.

Among them, Inzamam leads the charts with 20,541 runs across formats, followed by Younis (17,790), Yousuf (17,134), and Miandad (16,213).

Most international runs for Pakistan

  • Inzamam-ul-Haq – 20541 runs in 547 innings
  • Younis Khan – 17790 runs in 491 innings
  • Mohammad Yousuf – 17134 runs in 426 innings
  • Javed Miandad – 16213 in 407 innings
  • Babar Azam – 15004 runs in 370 innings

Babar, having reached 15,004 runs in just 370 innings, has achieved this milestone faster than most of his predecessors, further underscoring his consistency across formats.

Babar’s milestone, however, came in a bittersweet moment as his innings was cut short on 27 off 32 balls. His knock included five boundaries.

When this report was filed, Pakistan were 120-2 in 22 overs, with opener Saim Ayub (74*) and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan (17*) steering the chase.

Abrar Ahmed, Saim Ayub seal ODI series win for Pakistan

FAISALABAD: Abrar Ahmed took a four-wicket haul and Saim Ayub struck a fluent half-century to power Pakistan to a dominant seven-wicket victory over South Africa in the third ODI at Iqbal Stadium on Saturday, sealing the series 2-1.

Chasing a modest 144-run target, Pakistan wrapped up the game in just 25.1 overs, cruising to victory with 149 balls to spare.

The start, however, was anything but ideal for the hosts as Fakhar Zaman departed for a two-ball duck, undone by Nandre Burger.

But Saim Ayub and Babar Azam joined hands to steady the innings with a fluent 65-run partnership that swung the momentum Pakistan’s way. Babar looked set before a mix-up cost him his wicket, run out for 27 off 32 balls.

Saim was joined by Mohammad Rizwan, and they stitched another 65-run stand that virtually ended South Africa’s hopes.

Saim played a sparkling 77-run knock from 70 balls, laced with eleven boundaries and a towering six. He eventually fell to Bjorn Fortuin with Pakistan just 14 runs away from the target.

Rizwan remained unbeaten on 32, while Salman Ali Agha’s brief cameo (5* off 2) wrapped up the chase.

Earlier, South Africa’s decision to bat first backfired despite a promising start, as the visitors were bundled for 143 in 37.5 overs against Pakistan’s attack.

Openers Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Quinton de Kock laid the platform with a 72-run stand, punishing the new ball early on.

Pretorius looked in fine touch before Salman Ali Agha provided the breakthrough, dismissing him for a well-made 39 off 45 balls, decorated with four boundaries and a six.

De Kock held firm to notch up a composed 53 off 70 deliveries, but found little support from the middle order.

Once Mohammad Nawaz removed the South African wicketkeeper-batter in the 25th over, the innings unravelled dramatically.

From 106 for two, the Proteas collapsed in stunning fashion, losing their last eight wickets for just 37 runs.

Besides the openers, only captain Matthew Breetzke (16) and Nqabayomzi Peter (16) managed double figures for the visitors.

Abrar Ahmed was the chief destroyer, spinning a web around the opposition to claim 4 for 27 in his 10-over spell, his best figures in ODIs.

Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, Salman Ali Agha, and Mohammad Nawaz chipped in with two wickets apiece.

Prior to this ODI series, the two teams faced off in a three-match T20I series, which the Green Shirts won 2-1.

Shaheen Afridi eyes strong comeback in series decider

FAISALABAD: Pakistan skipper Shaheen Afridi lamented his side’s poor fielding and vowed to bounce back stronger in the series decider, scheduled to be played on Saturday.

South Africa chased down the 270-run target with ease in 40.1 overs, with Quinton De Kock and Tony de Zorzi starring for the Proteas.

Both left-handers batted briskly and threw Pakistan out of the game with an imperious 152-run partnership.

De Kock, in particular, returning to the ODI team nearly after two years, hit an unbeaten 123* off 119, studded with seven maximums.

Speaking in the post-match presentation, skipper Shaheen praised Saim Ayub and Salman Ali Agha for taking the team out of trouble.

Pakistan were not only outplayed in bowling, but also in batting. The visitors had inflicted a poor start on them, reducing the hosts to 22-3 inside the first five overs. It was the 92-run partnership between Saim and Salman that launched the recovery for the home side.

“I think Saim and Agha did really well, and their partnership helped us. Firstly, losing three wickets, we thought 270 was a good score, but dropped catches cost us. We will come back strongly,” he said.

Nqabayomzi Peter sets rare ODI record against Pakistan

FAISALABAD: South Africa’s leg-spinner Nqabayomzi Peter registered a rare ODI record with three caught and bowled dismissals against Pakistan in the second ODI here at the Iqbal Stadium on Thursday.

Peter returned with the figures of 3/55 in eight overs, including 22 in the last over.

During his spell, the 23-year-old picked up the wickets of Hussain Talat, Mohammad Nawaz, and Shaheen Shah Afridi — all caught and bowled. With this, he became the first bowler in ODI history to achieve the feat in a single innings.

Overall, four Pakistani batters were dismissed caught and bowled, marking only the second such instance in ODI cricket. Saim Ayub was the other batter to be dismissed, caught and bowled,

Nonetheless, despite a miserable start, Pakistan set a 270-run target in their 50 overs, thanks to half-centuries from Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, and Mohammad Nawaz.

Saim made 53 from 66, whereas Salman Ali Agha scored a grinding 69 from 106 balls. Meanwhile, Nawaz provided a late flourish to Pakistan’s innings, ensuring that the home side posted a challenging total.

For South Africa, Nandre Burger stood out amongst the bowlers and picked up four wickets in his quota of 10 overs.

De Kock’s 123* hands Pakistan a drubbing in second ODI

FAISALABAD: Quinton de Kock’s unbeaten 123* off 119 balls helped South Africa outplay Pakistan in the second ODI to level the three-match series here on Thursday.

South Africa chased down the 270-run target with ease, losing just two wickets in the process, with 59 balls to spare.

The series decider will be played on Saturday, November 8, at the same venue.

Quinton de Kock and Lhuan-dre Pretorius provided the Proteas a brisk start, adding 81 in just 11.5 overs. Pretorius remained the core aggressor, scoring 46 off 40 balls with the help of seven fours and a six.

However, the monumental 153-run partnership for the second wicket between De Kock and Tony de Zorzi kept Pakistan bowlers at bay.

Both batters notched up half-centuries at a quick-scoring rate. De Zorzi fell after a brisk 76 from 63 balls studded with nine fours and three sixes. Meanwhile, De Kock continued till the end and scored his 22nd ODI century.

The southpaw returned to his best with an innings that included seven maximums and eight fours.

For Pakistan, there was nothing much in the wickets columns with Mohammad Wasim and Faheem managing to scalp one wicket apiece.

Earlier, opting to bat first here at the Iqbal Stadium, Pakistan managed to post 269-9 on the board in their 50 overs despite a miserable start.

South Africa’s Nandre Burger inflicted a horror start with Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan sent back inside the first five overs.

Zaman was caught behind for nought on the third ball of the opening over, followed by Babar in the fourth. The right-hander made 11 from 13 balls while Rizwan could not extend his stay at the crease and was removed on the fifth ball of the same over for four.

As a result, Green Shirts were in tatters with 22-3 in 4.5 overs.

However, Salman Ali Agha and Saim Ayub paired up and stitched a 92-run partnership from 119 balls, which steadied Pakistan’s innings. Saim remained the core aggressor while Salman played second-fiddle.

The pivotal partnership was ultimately broken by Corbin Bosch in the 25th over when he caught and bowled Saim.

The opening batter made a significant contribution to Pakistan’s score, tallying 53 runs off 66 balls, which included five fours and a six.

Pakistan faced another setback when Hussain Talat was dismissed for 10 runs by Nqabayomzi Peter in the 30th over.

Agha played a key role in forming a crucial 59-run partnership for the sixth wicket with fellow all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz.

He was eventually dismissed by Bosch in the 41st over, finishing as Pakistan’s top scorer with a resilient 69 runs from 105 balls, which featured five fours.

Following Agha’s exit, Nawaz took control of the innings, making 59 runs off 59 balls, and hitting four sixes and three fours before being dismissed by Nqabayomzi Peter on the second-to-last delivery of the final over.

He received notable assistance from Faheem Ashraf, who delivered a quick-fire 28 runs off just 18 balls, including two sixes and two fours.

For South Africa, Nandre Burger shone as the standout bowler, taking four wickets in his quota of 10 overs.

South Africa name THIS batter as Dewald Brevis’ replacement in ODI squad

FAISALABAD: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that left-handed batter Rubin Hermann has been drafted in as a replacement for the injured Dewald Brevis for the remaining ODI matches against Pakistan.

Hermann, 28, brings impressive List A credentials to the squad, 1,699 runs in 41 matches at an average of nearly 50, including six centuries and as many fifties.

The left-hander has also represented South Africa in six T20Is but has yet to make his ODI debut.

“North West Dragons batter Rubin Hermann has been named as Dewald Brevis’ replacement for the remainder of the One-Day International series against Pakistan,” CSA said in an official statement on Wednesday.

Brevis, nicknamed ‘Baby AB’ for his stroke-making similarities to AB de Villiers, sustained a shoulder muscle strain during the third T20I against Pakistan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore last week.

Scans later confirmed a low-grade injury, ruling him out of the 50-over leg of the tour.

Despite the setback, he will remain with the squad in Pakistan to continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of the Proteas medical team.

South Africa trail 1-0 in the three-match ODI series, after losing the opening match in Faisalabad.

The remaining fixtures are scheduled at the same venue on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

The skipper praised the batters for taking the team out of trouble and aimed to avoid repeating the mistakes that had happened during the chase.

“I would give credit to our batter; they handled it well. We need experienced batting like this. Credit goes to them, they batted really well on a tough surface.”

Agha, Rizwan and bowlers help Pakistan beat South Africa in ODI series opener

FAISALABAD: Clinical bowling, backed by Salman Ali Agha and Mohammad Rizwan’s gutsy half-centuries, guided Pakistan to victory against South Africa in the first One Day International (ODI) here at the Iqbal Stadium on Tuesday.

Set 264, Pakistan hit the winning runs on the loss of eight wickets with two balls to spare.

Pakistan had a similar start to South Africa, with openers laying a solid foundation, adding an 87-run partnership in 15.2 overs. Saim Ayub was the first wicket to fall, trapped in front by Donovan Ferreira.

The left-hander made 39 from 42, striking four boundaries and a six.. Fakhar, who was going well, perished after skying one onto long on. Babar Azam, who opened his account with a beautiful cover drive, could not extend his stay on the crease and was lbw for seven.

As a result, the home side were reduced from 87-0 to 105-3 in 19.5 overs. With two new batters at the crease, the Proteas sensed an opening; however, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha forged a 91-run partnership that took the game away from them.

Both batters batted with resilience and notched up half-centuries, which put Pakistan in a position of victory. Rizwan top-scored with 55 from 74 balls with the help of six fours, while Salman Ali Agha hit five boundaries and a six on his way to 62 from 71 balls.

However, just when Pakistan seemed to be cruising towards victory, a few quick wickets slumped them from 241-5 to 263-8 in 49.3 overs. Eventually, Mohammad Nawaz’s boundary and Naseem Shah’s calm single sealed the win for the hosts.

For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi, Donovan Ferreira, and Corbin Bosch picked up two wickets each.

Earlier, Quinton de Kock sparkled with a half-century on his ODI return before Abrar Ahmed and Naseem Shah’s three-wickets folded South Africa on 263 in 49.1 overs.

Quinton de Kock and Lhuan-dre Pretorius provided a solid opening start with a 97-run stand in just 15.6 overs. The pair batted beautifully on a good-looking surface.

Pretorius, particularly, took pacers Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi to cleaners with a flurry of boundaries. As a result, the visitors were 62 at the end of the power play.

The stand eventually culminated with Pretorius’ wicket, who perished in the 15th over after making 57 from 60 balls. He struck seven fours and a six in his brisk knock.

Despite the wicket, the Proteas batted at a brisk rate, with De Kock bringing his half-century off 48 balls. He added 43 for the second wicket with Tony de Zorzi as the scorecard read 141 in 24.4 overs.

The Proteas were cruising; however, the home side made a roaring comeback with the quick wickets of De Kock (63 off 71 balls) and Tony De Zordi (18 off 20). Naseem castled the former, whereas the latter was caught and bowled off Saim’s bowling.

Breetzke scored 47 from 54 with the help of two boundaries, while Qeshile made 22 off 23 balls.

At this stage, the Proteas were eyeing a 300-run plus total; however, Abrar Ahmed sparked a collapse and left them reeling on 228-8 in 43.2 overs.

But it was Corbin Bosch 41 from 40 balls laced with six fours that propelled them to over 250 runs before Naseem bundled out the visitors on the first ball of the last over.

For Pakistan, Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed shared six wickets each, whereas Saim Ayub scalped two wickets in his eight overs.
