Australia suffer injury scare ahead of T20 World Cup 2026

Australia were dealt a worrying blow on Tuesday ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after ace all-rounder Marcus Stoinis was forced to retire hurt during the Big Bash League (BBL) 15 fixture.

Stoinis, 36, is part of Australia’s 15-member provisional squad for the forthcoming mega event and is currently leading the Melbourne Stars in the BBL.

The right-hander came out to bat with the Stars struggling at 43-3 in 8.3 overs while chasing a modest 84-run target.

The skipper made 23 of 20 balls with the help of a six and a boundary before a short of a good length ball from Jamie Overton hit his thumb during the 14th over of the game, with Stars requiring just two runs to win.

After the blow, Stoinis immediately removed the glove and signalled for the physio. He eventually left the field and later provided an update on his injury during the post-match presentation, noting that a scan was needed.

“I think I’ll probably be getting the scan, but I think it’s okay,” he said.

“Just sort of precautionary at the end, when you’re right near the end of an innings, I think. Initially, it feels like nothing, and then after about 10 seconds, you feel something.

And it’s probably just not worth the risk at that stage of the game, I guess. And to be honest, their boys were really good. Lynny [Chris Lynn] and Shorty [Matt Short] came up and said, mate, get off. You’ve got two runs to go, so get off. So right decision in the end,” Stoinis concluded.

Provisional Australian squad: Mitchell Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa

WATCH: It’s time to go, Stoinis before removing Babar

MELBOURNE: Melbourne Stars skipper Marcus Stoinis did not mince words before trapping Sydney Sixers opener Babar Azam in the 27th match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 15 here at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Thursday.

Sixers chased down a partly target of 129, losing four wickets in the process with 17 balls to spare.

Josh Philippe remained the top scorer with 35 from 25 balls, striking two fours and the same number of sixes.

For Melbourne Stars, Haris Rauf picked up one wicket, whereas Stoinis scalped two wickets in his quota of four overs.

However, their star overseas batter Babar faltered again as he managed to score 14 off 17 balls with the help of a single boundary.

The right-arm pacer bowled a full and straight delivery on the stumps as Babar closed the face of the bat early and missed the line and length.

Following the conclusion of the match, Stoinis revealed his words to Babar Azam before getting him trapped on the crease.

“It’s good to know those stump mics are on,” Stoinis said in a light-hearted manner after the match.

Nonetheless, Babar’s struggle continued in BBL 15, as he is yet to make his mark.

The right-hander has so far scored 145 runs in seven matches at an average of 24.16 with the help of two half-centuries.

Marcus Stoinis returns as Australia announce squad for New Zealand T20Is

MELBOURNE: Australia have named a 14-member squad for next month’s three-match T20I series against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui, with allrounder Marcus Stoinis making his international return.

Stoinis, who stepped away from ODIs earlier this year and has been without a central or state contract for 12 months, last featured for Australia in late 2024.

His comeback headlines a squad that also sees Mitchell Owen and Matthew Short back in the fold. Owen returns after a concussion ruled him out of the South Africa series, while Short has recovered from a side strain picked up during training in Jamaica.

Selectors have opted to rest captain Pat Cummins as he manages a back problem in the lead-up to the Ashes summer, while pacer Nathan Ellis will miss the series due to paternity leave.

Cameron Green has also been left out, with his immediate focus on Sheffield Shield cricket as he builds back towards bowling.

Fast bowler Xavier Bartlett has earned a recall, but back-up keeper Alex Carey and allrounder Aaron Hardie, both injury replacements during the South Africa series, miss out.

Ellis, who has played 10 of Australia’s last 11 T20Is, is widely regarded as a long-term option in the pace attack following Mitchell Starc’s retirement.

Left-arm quick Ben Dwarshuis also remains in contention after impressive performances in the Caribbean and against South Africa.

The three-match series begins on October 1, with all games scheduled at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The second and third T20Is will be played on October 3 and 4, respectively.

Australia all-rounder announces shock retirement ahead of Champions Trophy

Australia suffered a major blow to their preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as their star all-rounder Marcus Stoinis left fans shocked with his immediate retirement from the ODI format just before the mega-event.

Stoinis announced his decision on Thursday morning, leaving Australia without another all-rounder following the injury of Mitchell Marsh which ruled him out of the upcoming tournament.

“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold,” Stoinis said in a statement.

“Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish.

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career.

“I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron [Andrew McDonald] and I’ve hugely appreciated his support.”

He concluded his statement by expressing support for the Australia cricket team, which is set to depart for Pakistan to participate in the Champions Trophy 2025.

“I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan,” he said.

Marcus Stoinis was a member of the 2023 ODI World Cup-winning squad and played a crucial role with the ball against Pakistan, helping Australia recover from a poor start in the tournament ultimately leading them to victory.

However, he played only one more ODI after the World Cup, which was also against Pakistan earlier this season.

Last year, he did not receive a contract from Cricket Australia (CA), but he was expected to play a key role in the Champions Trophy due to the injury of Cameron Green and Marsh.

The retirement of Marcus Stoinis has presented another challenge for the Australian team management.

They will need to make several adjustments to their Champions Trophy squad, as Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out due to a back injury. Additionally, captain Pat Cummins is unlikely to participate, along with fellow fast bowler Josh Hazlewood.

GT20 Canada: All-round Stoinis aids Jaguars’ thumping win over Nationals

BRAMPTON: Marcus Stoinis backed his brisk half-century with a three-for and propelled Surrey Jaguars to a thumping 80-run victory over Toronto Nationals in the seventh match of the GT20 Canada 2024.

Put into bat first, the Jaguars registered a commendable total of 161/6 on the board, mainly due to Stoinis’ half-century.

The Jaguars, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost opener Sunil Narine (2) in the third over with just 17 runs on the board.

Surrey Jaguars then lost two more wickets in regular intervals and consequently slipped to 49/3 in 6.5 overs.

Jaguars’ captain Stoinis, after coming out to bat at No.5, soon took the reigns of his side’s batting expedition and went after the Nationals’ bowlers.

The right-handed batter smashed three fours and four sixes on his way to a 37-ball 57 which lasted in the 17th over.

Later, Virandeep Singh (20*) and Mohammad Nabi (13) added valuable runs to the Surrey Jaguars’ total and took them past the 160-run mark.

Muhammad Rohid and Junaid Siddique bagged two wickets each for the Nationals while Jatinderpal Matharu and Romario Shepherd shared two wickets between them.

In response, Toronto Nationals’ batting lineup crumbled against a disciplined Surrey Jaguars’ bowling attack and could accumulate 81 runs before being bundled out in the 18th over.

Wicketkeeper batter Unmukt Chand remained the top-scorer for the Nationals with his 17-ball 21 up the order while Rassie van der Dussen (15), Nicholas Kirton (11) and Rohit Paudel (10) were the other notable run-getters.

The rest of the Nationals’ batters, on the other hand, failed to make it into the double figures.

Sunil Narine and Marcus Stoinis led the Jaguars’ charge with the ball, taking three wickets each while Nabi took two.

The 80-run victory lifted Surrey Jaguars to the third in the GT20 Canada 2024 standings with two points in two matches while Toronto Nationals remained second with four points in three matches.

Faf du Plessis, Marcus Stoinis steer Texas Super Kings to victory against MI New York

DALLAS: Captain Faf du Plessis played a blistering 61-run knock, followed by Marcus Stoinis’s all-round exploits, which helped Texas Super Kings to edge past MI New York in a high-scoring Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 clash here at Grand Prairie Stadium on Sunday.

While batting first, Du Plessis led from the front, giving his side a fiery start with a 38-ball knock during his opening partnership with Devon Conway.

Nosthush Kenjige claimed the prized scalp of Du Plessis in the ninth over with 85 runs on the board. The Super Kings’ skipper top-scored with 61 runs, laced with four sixes and four boundaries.

Meanwhile, Conway scored 40 off 28 with three fours and one six before he fell prey to Ehsan Adil, leaving the home side with 121-2 in 13.1 overs.

Aaron Hardie played a 17-ball cameo scoring 22, while Stoinis scored an unbeaten 24 off 18 to take the team’s total to 176-6 in their allocated 20 overs.

Trent Boult led the bowling for MI New York with two wickets, while Rashid Khan, Nosthush Kenjige, and Ehsan Adil took one wicket each.

In response, MI New York had a disastrous start to their campaign as they slipped to 52-5 in 11.2 overs courtesy of Stoinis and Zia-ul-Haq’s fiery bowling.

However, Monank Patel, who was playing an anchor’s role, was joined by Rashid Khan and together they raised 97 runs from 48 balls, attempting to force a comeback.

Both batters attacked Texas Super Kings’ bowlers, especially Naveen-ul-Haq, who gave eight runs in his first two overs but his other two overs went for 38 runs.

However, the required run-rate was too much to achieve as the equation came down to 32 needed off last over. Stoinis dismissed both batters in the last over, helping his side register a 15-run victory.

Patel top-scored with 61 off 45, while Rashid Khan scored a 23-ball 50, which featured four boundaries and five sixes.

Stoinis returned with bowling figures of 4-50, while Zia-ul-Haq claimed 2-15.

Earlier in the day, in another MLC 2024 match, Washington Freedom further solidified their position at the top of the table with a dominant eight-wicket victory over Los Angeles Knight Riders.

Marcus Stoinis ruled out of New Zealand T20Is

Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand owing to his back injury which he suffered during the West Indies series.

Allrounder Aaron Hardie has been called as Stoinis’ replacement for the New Zealand tour, commencing next week.

Stoinis got his back twisted ahead of the second T20I against West Indies, but he managed to partake in the match.

He scored 16 off 15 and was involved in a one-sided partnership of 80 runs with Glenn Maxwell, followed by three wickets with the ball.

However, he complained of back issues after reaching Perth, due to which he could not participate in the third T20I against West Indies and was then ruled out of the New Zealand tour.

His replacement Hardie will join the squad in New Zealand ahead of the first T20I, scheduled to be played in Wellington on February 21.

Hardie has featured in seven T20Is for Australia since making his debut against South Africa last year.

He failed to impress so far as he scored a meagre 69 runs in six outings and picked three wickets.

However, he has a chance to prove himself and make a strong case for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup as the New Zealand series is the last for Australia before the mega-event.

Meanwhile, Marcus Stoinis is expected to achieve full fitness before the IPL, which will be key to his ICC T20 World Cup preparations.

Marcus Stoinis doubtful for ICC World Cup 2023 clash against India

Australian allrounder Marcus Stoinis is doubtful to play against India in Australia’s first match of the ICC World Cup 2023 on October 8 in Chennai due to a hamstring injury.

Stoinis picked up a hamstring injury during the first ODI of the three-match ODI series against India in Mohali last month. He did not participate further in the series and did not feature in Australia’s ICC World Cup 2023 warm-up fixtures.

Australian coach Andrew McDonald gave an update on Marcus Stoinis’ injury while talking to media in Chennai ahead of their first game.

“He’s got a slight hamstring complaint at this stage, so that’s why he missed the practice games and he’ll be touch and go for the first game against India,” Australia coach Andrew McDonald. “We’ve got the main session today and then another hit out tomorrow, so he’ll go through his work there and we’ll see whether he’s available for selection for game one but at the moment he wasn’t fit and available for those practice games.”

McDonald also shed light on Australia’s team combination, as well as the possibility of playing Cameron Green and Stoinis together.

“There’s a way that we can fit them both into the one side,” he said. “Over the last 18 months, we’ve had a pretty clear way that we want to build three ways of playing. One of those ways is definitely with all the all-rounders and potentially two quicks, and you’ve seen that side in the past 18 months being played, so there is a real possibility that both of those players can be in the same XI.”

He further stressed the importance of Glenn Maxwell in the squad considering his current form, as he picked four wickets against India in the final ODI, which was his first game after returning from injury. He followed that with a half-century against Pakistan in the warm-up match.

“Glenn Maxwell being able to cope with the demands of the game that he played, a significant innings plus being able to back up and bowl as many overs as he did. He has pulled up really well,” said McDonald.

“So a few of those moving parts that we had leading in have unfolded positively for us, which is nice. If you asked me that two weeks ago, I would have been a little bit worried but now everything seems to have come together nicely,” he concluded.

Stoinis accuses Hasnain of chucking after getting out in The Hundred

LONDON: Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis sparked controversy on Sunday as he seemingly accused the Pakistan young gun Mohammad Hasnain of chucking amid the 14th match of The Hundred 2022.

In the first inning of the match between Southern Braves and Oval Invincibles, the latter’s speedster Hasnain banged in at 88mph; leaving Stoinis to slice it to the mid-wicket, who managed to score 37 off 27 deliveries, laced with two boundaries and two sixes.

Stoinis, who top scored for the Braves, mimicked Hasnain’s bowling action and took a not-so-subtle jab at the 22-year-old, who had his action reported earlier this year during the Big Bash League (BBL).

Hasnain was found guilty of having an illegal bowling action and was suspended from bowling earlier this year after umpire Gerard Abood reported it in the BBL match between Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers on January 2.

Following the suspension, the 22-year-old rectified his bowling action under the supervision of the National High-Performance Centre (NHPC) bowling coach Umar Rasheed.

In May, the right-arm pacer underwent a bowling action test at a local laboratory in Lahore. After which Hasnain was deemed clear and received a green signal for playing competitive cricket.
