England blow away Oman to push for Super 8s qualification

ANTIGUA: A ruthless bowling performance, followed by equally dominant batting led England to ease past Oman in the must-win ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 fixture here at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Thursday.

Set to chase a modest 48, England chased down the total in just 3.1 overs, courtesy of Jos Buttler’s blitz.

Earlier, opening batter Phil Salt gave the defending champions a flying start by smashing back-to-back sixes on the first two deliveries of the innings.

Salt, however, perished on the next delivery as Bilal Khan hit back.

England then lost another wicket in the run chase as Will Jacks only managed five off seven before falling victim to Kaleemullah in the second over.

Meanwhile, Jos Buttler decimated Bilal in the third over of the innings and put England just two away from the victory.

Jonny Bairstow then smashed Fayyaz Butt for a boundary on the first delivery of the fourth over to complete England’s resounding victory. He scored eight off two deliveries.

Buttler top-scored for England with an unbeaten 24 in just eight balls, peppered with four fours and a six.

For Oman, Bilal Khan and Kaleemullah could pick up a wicket.

Sent into bat first, Oman’s inexperienced batting unit was unfolded on a meagre total in 13.2 overs.

Oman, after a disastrous start, kept losing wickets at an alarming rate and were subsequently bundled out at a paltry total.

Shoaib Khan was the only Oman batter to amass the double figures as he top-scored for the associate nation with 11.

Whereas, Kashyap Prajapati (9) and skipper Aqib Ilyas (8) were the other notable run-getters.

Adil Rashid spearheaded England’s dominant bowling attack with a four-fer, followed by Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, who picked up three wickets each.

A dominant eight-wicket victory lifted defending champions England to third in Group B standings of the T20 World Cup 2024 with three points in as many matches while Oman ended their campaign with four defeats.

Oman captain takes a dig at Australia’s batters ahead of T20 World Cup clash

BRIDGETOWN: Oman’s captain Aqib Ilyas has criticized the batting line-up of Australia ahead of their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash, scheduled later today at Kensington Oval.

This will be the first match between the two nations and Ilyas has expressed optimism about his team’s chances against the ODI and Test World champions.

“We don’t have much to lose. Every time there is a World Cup, there is an upset … anything can happen. We respect (Australia) a lot as a team … but before the game, it’s important to not get overawed by them,” the Oman captain told the reporters.

“Once you step into the field, there is no big name, there is no one bigger than you at the field. It’s another game for us and we don’t think that we are going to play someone extraordinary,” he added.

He then took a dig at Australian batters, saying that they lack good technique and only try to go for big shots.

“(Australia) used to have a few players with good techniques in the past like Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, but I don’t think they have many now. They look to hit big. They only try to go for sixes. If we get the same wicket (as the one against Namibia), maybe it could be a problem for them,” Ilyas remarked.

For the unversed, Oman lost Namibia in the Super Over after they defended 109 runs in 20 overs to tie the match.

However, David Weise’s all-round performance sealed the Super Over victory for Namibia.

Oman almost had to wave ‘Goodbye’ to World Cup due to deadly storm

Muscat: The chairman of Oman’s cricket board told Reuters he would have had to wave “Goodbye” to the Twenty20 World Cup had a deadly storm that ripped through the Gulf state on Sunday taken a slightly different path.

Eleven people were killed as heavy winds and rain swept through the country after tropical storm Shaheen made landfall in Oman.

The Gulf state will host six Group B matches at Al Amerat near Muscat, including three involving their own team, and Oman Cricket Chairman Pankaj Khimji said they were “very fortunate” to have missed the worst of the storm.

“We were so close to being virtually wiped out,” he told Reuters.

“We had the cyclone only a few nautical miles north. It made the landfall there and it’s devastated that whole region and flooded the whole plain over there.

“Had this had happened over here in this area, I’d have said ‘Goodbye’ to the World Cup.”

While a handful of hospitality tents bore the brunt of the storm, the organisers were pleased with the greener look of the outfield following the intense rain.

“We got about three to four inches of rain,” said Khimji. “And that made the ground even more lush and greener, it looks even prettier now. It washed off all the dirt and sand.”

The tournament was moved to the United Arab Emirates and Oman from India due to a COVID-19 surge and Khimji said it was a huge honour for minnows of the cricket world to stage such a prestigious event.

“This cricket coming to Oman is gigantic,” he said.

“To think that there will be tens of millions of people watching the first game, it’s overwhelming to an extent.

“How often will an associate country get a chance to host and play in the World Cup at the same time? This is unreal, I’m living a dream.”

Zeeshan Maqsood will lead a bunch of Omani amateurs in the tournament and Khimji was hopeful they could make the Super 12 stage with a top-two finish in Group B, which also includes Bangladesh, Scotland and Papua New Guinea.

“They have been fantastic. These are rank amateurs, they have a job which they do nine-to-five, and they’ve taken a month or two off just to compete in this World Cup.”

England arrived in Muscat on Tuesday to begin their 10-day preparatory camp before the Super 12 stage in the United Arab Emirates.

The World Cup gets underway on Oct. 17.

Pakistan fails to get hosting rights of FIH Hockey5s World Cup

Karachi: The Executive Board of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Thursday picked Oman to host the inaugural Hockey5s World Cups (Men and Women) to be played in January 2024 as Pakistan failed to get the nod of hosting.
India and Singapore were also in the race to host flagship event. Matches will take place in Oman’s capital city Muscat, FIH said in a statement.

The Hockey5s’ event is a brand-new FIH competition. Sixteen teams per gender (3 per continent + Oman as hosts) will take part in this first edition. Continental Hockey5s qualifiers for the World Cup will be organized in 2022.
“We’re looking forward to a wonderful inaugural FIH Hockey5s World Cup in Oman. This surely will be a great boost for the promotion of hockey both in the country and in the whole region,” FIH CEO Thierry Weil said.
“We’re convinced that Hockey5s will play a key role in the growth of hockey worldwide. This is why this World Cup has been created, as well as a Hockey5s World Tour which we are currently working on.”
In 2019, the FIH Executive Board decided to create an FIH Hockey5s World Cup, with a view to further boosting the development of the game globally through the promotion of its 5-a-side format. Played in about 70 countries in the world, Hockey5s was the most attended sport at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
