England explore options for historic Nepal tour

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is mulling options for a maiden tour of Nepal in the next FTP cycle.

England could become the biggest international team to tour Nepal, with the ECB exploring the possibility of a T20I series in the 2027-31 international cycle.

The development comes after Nepal’s impressive performances in recent times, including a series win over the West Indies for the first time in UAE.  However, they are yet to host a Test-playing nation for a full international tour.

England and Nepal played for the first time at the T20 World Cup in February, with the former winning the thriller on the final ball.

After a closely fought encounter, Nepal skipper and CAN secretary Paras Khadka held discussions with ECB officials regarding the future of Nepal cricket.

It is worth mentioning that the ECB has been working on the international calendar for the next cycle with several other boards. The final schedule has yet to be confirmed and depends on the ICC’s decision on the new World Test Championship (WTC) format.

Although England’s international schedule is already congested, the board is seriously considering a brief men’s tour of Nepal.

The series could likely take place before England’s white-ball assignment in Asia, such as India, and serve as valuable preparatory ground.

The England cricket team is set to host Australia for the Ashes in 2027, while Pakistan and New Zealand are also expected to tour for white-ball series in June and September, respectively.

Nepal sign off T20 World Cup with win over Scotland

Dipendra Singh Airee hit an unbeaten 50 as Nepal saved their best for last to end their T20 World Cup campaign with a seven-wicket win over Scotland on Tuesday.

Chasing 171 for victory, Nepal looked in trouble at 98-3 in the 14th over before Airee took the initiative in his 23-ball knock as his team achieved the target with four balls to spare in Mumbai.

Airee put on 73 runs with Gulsan Jha, who made 24 not out, as Nepal earned their first win after three losses in Group C.

Nepal’s fans erupted with joy at the Wankhede Stadium after seeing their team win for the first time in the tournament since 2014.

“I want to thank the fans who came from Nepal and supported us, that gives a lot of motivation to all of us,” said player of the match Airee.

“And in the last World Cup, we didn’t win a single match. So that’s why this win is very important for us.”

It was Nepal’s first victory in the T20 World Cup since they beat Hong Kong and Afghanistan in the opening stage 12 years ago.

Nepal had given England a mighty scare in their opener before losing by four runs, and then went down in the next two games.

Nepal pace bowler Sompal Kami stood out with figures of 3-25.

Nepal started strongly with Kushal Bhurtel scoring 45 as he put on 74 runs with fellow opener Aasif Sheikh, who made 33.

Spinner Michael Leask picked up three quick wickets as Scotland fought back, but Airee led Nepal over the line for a memorable win.

West Indies cruise past Nepal to seal Super Eight spot in T20 World Cup 2026

MUMBAI: West Indies delivered a commanding performance to defeat Nepal by nine wickets and secure qualification for the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Chasing a modest 136, the Caribbean side made the target look routine, reaching 136-1 in just 15.2 overs with a composed and clinical batting display led by captain Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer.

The run chase began positively as Brandon King and Hope stitched a steady 43-run opening stand.

King scored a brisk 22 off 17 balls, striking four boundaries before falling, but his dismissal did little to slow the momentum.

Hetmyer then joined Hope, and the duo ensured there were no further hiccups, building an unbeaten partnership to guide their side home comfortably.

Hope anchored the innings with an unbeaten 61 off 44 deliveries, registering his 10th T20I half-century with five fours and three sixes, while Hetmyer provided strong support with a fluent 46 not out from 32 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.

Earlier, West Indies’ bowlers set up the victory by restricting Nepal to 133-8 in their 20 overs.

All-rounder Jason Holder was the standout performer, claiming 4/27 in his four overs, while Roston Chase, Shamar Joseph, Matthew Forde and Akeal Hosein chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Nepal’s innings never found sustained momentum after early setbacks.

Kushal Bhurtel fell for just one in the opening over, while captain Rohit Paudel and wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh departed cheaply, leaving the side reeling at 17-3.

Holder and Joseph continued to apply pressure through the middle overs, further denting Nepal’s progress.

A late resistance came through Dipendra Singh Airee and Sompal Kami, who added a valuable 54-run partnership to push Nepal past the 100-run mark.

Airee scored a fighting 58 off 47 balls, including three fours and three sixes, while Kami remained unbeaten on 26 from 15 deliveries with four boundaries.

T20 World Cup: Italy beat Nepal in quick time to seal historic win

MUMBAI: Dominant Italy deflated Nepal’s bowling attack to seal a 10-wicket win over Nepal in the 17th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 played here at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Set mere 124, Italy made the target look so easy and chased it down in only 12.4 overs.

The first win in the mega event marked a historic moment in Italy’s cricketing landscape, as they overpowered opposition like Nepal, which had nearly pushed England to the brink in their previous fixture.

Justin Mosca and Anthony Mosca, both brothers, came out firing all cylinders with 68 on the board in the first six overs.

Italy’s openers not only took down the bowlers but also impressed with their range of shots.

The pair continued on their destructive batting after the Powerplay and reached the half-centuries in the process.

Anthony Mosca nudged for a single in the 12th over to seal a memorable win.

Justin Mosca struck three sixes and five fours in his 60* from 44, whereas Anthony Mosca scored 62 from 32 included six maximums and three fours.

Earlier, asked to bat first, Nepal’s shambolic batting display saw them 123 all out in 19.3 overs.

Kushal Bhurtel was dismissed early for five with Aasif Sheikh and the skipper Rohit Paudel coming to the fore. The duo steadied the innings with a 41-run partnership.

The scorecard is 49 when Sri Lanka-born Crishan Kalugamage removed Paudel. The skipper managed 23 from 14 with the help of two sixes.

Italy snared another quick wicket to get hold of the proceedings before a 44-run stand between Dipendra Singh Airee and Aarif Sheikh propelled their score to 93 in 13.5 overs.

However, Airee’s wicket sparked a collapse that Nepal could not recover from. They slumped to 102-8 and 123 all out in 16.5 overs from 93-4.

Aarif Sheikh remained the top scorer with 27 off 24 balls, hitting three fours.

For Italy, Crishan Kalugamage stood out with three wickets to his name. Ben Manenti supported him well with two scalps.

Nepal captain wants India, England, Australia to play in Kathmandu

Nepal captain Rohit Paudel on Tuesday called for cricketing powers India, England and Australia to tour his country to play a T20 series.

Nepal came within a nail-biting single ball of one of the biggest upsets in T20 World Cup history on Sunday when they lost to Harry Brook’s England by four runs in Mumbai.

Lokesh Bam could only hit a single off Sam Curran’s final delivery when he needed a six.

“My message would be a warm welcome to all those teams,” Paudel said as his side prepared to face Italy in Mumbai on Thursday.

“They will love in Kirtipur and Kathmandu to play against us, and they will get a warm welcome in Nepal.

“I think if Australia, England, India whoever comes, I think our cricket will grow and it will help to globalise the cricket more, so I think it’s very important.”

Not only did the associate nation run England close on Sunday, but they lost by just one run to eventual finalists South Africa at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Paudel said the two results had raised the profile of Nepali cricket.

“Against South Africa, it was the first time we came so close,” he said, adding that the “last game against England has given us a lot more spotlight”.

India, Pakistan and England were all given big scares by non-Test playing nations in their first group matches.

England’s Jos Buttler said Tuesday that the T20 format was a great leveller.

“I think in T20 World Cups, T20 cricket, generally, the games are closer,” said Buttler.

“One or two players can win games for their side on the day. So I think you’re going to see some close games of cricket.”

The West Indies played a T20 series against Nepal last year, losing 2-1 and their head coach Darren Sammy said such encounters were important.

“I think it’s our responsibility to grow the game in whatever way we can,” Sammy told reporters in Mumbai ahead of the next West Indies match against England on Wednesday.

“If that is Australia playing Nepal or India playing Nepal or West Indies playing Nepal, it is our job to help spread the game.

“And if giving or playing against the associate teams gives them more exposure … I think it is only good for the game.”

Dale Steyn offers help to spirited Nepal after near-upset against England

MUMBAI: Former South Africa fast-bowling great Dale Steyn has praised the Nepal cricket team’s fearless display and even offered his services to them after their dramatic performance against England in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday.

Nepal pushed England to the brink in a thrilling contest but fell agonisingly short by just five runs, finishing on 180-6 while chasing a daunting 185-run target.

The spirited effort nearly produced one of the biggest upsets in tournament history and underlined Nepal’s growing reputation on the global stage.

Impressed by their fight, Steyn took to social media platform X and wrote: “Nepal, I offer my services to you if you ever need ’em! Up, up and UP.”

Nepal began the chase with intent as openers Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh stitched together a brisk 37-run stand.

Sheikh departed for 7, while Bhurtel continued the momentum with a lively 29 off 17 balls, including four boundaries and a six, before falling with the score at 42-2.

Captain Rohit Paudel then partnered Dipendra Singh Airee to revive the innings, adding a crucial 82-run stand in 54 balls.

Airee led the charge with a fluent 44 off 29 deliveries, striking six fours and a six, before Sam Curran broke the partnership.

Paudel followed soon after for a composed 39 off 34 balls, leaving Nepal at 126-4 in the 16th over.

Nepal’s push suffered another setback when Aarif Sheikh fell for 10, but Lokesh Bam reignited hopes with a counter-attacking cameo.

With 24 needed from the final two overs, Mark Wood conceded 14 runs but removed Gulsan Jha, leaving Nepal requiring 10 off the last over.

Curran held his nerve brilliantly, conceding just five runs to seal a narrow victory for England.

Lokesh Bam remained unbeaten with 39 off just 20 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes, bringing Nepal within touching distance of a historic win.

Sloppy England seal nervy win against Nepal in T20 World Cup

MUMBAI: England held on to their nerve in the final over to escape defeat against Nepal in the fifth fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Set a challenging 185 for spirited Nepal, England defended 10 in the last over, thanks to brilliant bowling from Sam Curran.

Nepal’s Lokesh Bam (39 not out) needed a six off the final delivery of the match, bowled by Sam Curran, but could only club the ball to deep cover for a single.

Nepal fell just short at 180-6, despite being roared on by most of the spectators in a three-quarters full Wankhede stadium.

They got off to a flying start in their chase, Kushal Bhurtel crunching 29 off 17 balls before Jacks had him caught and bowled.

Captain Rohit Paudel and Dipendra Singh Airee came together at 42-2 and brought up Nepal’s 100 in the 12th over.

Pace man Archer, who conceded 14 off his first over, was brought back and put the brakes on, conceding just six runs from his next two overs.

But the Nepali batter ook to Rashid at the other end, launching the leg-spinner for 19 off his third over with Airee hitting two sixes and a four. He finished with 0-42 from three overs.

The blitz left Nepal needing 62 off the last six overs with eight wickets in hand.

Left-arm seamer Curran returned and immediately got the vital breakthrough, ending the 82-run partnership for the third wicket when Airee holed out to Tom Banton for 44.

The wicket slowed Nepal’s charge and Paudel on 39 then swept Liam Dawson to Phil Salt at deep midwicket to leave them 126-4 in the 16th over.

Archer came back for a final over and proved expensive again, being thrashed for three sixes and 22 runs by Lokesh to leave Nepal 24 off 12 balls for an unlikely win.

Dawson was the pick of England’s bowlers with 2-21 while Archer had 1-42 from his four as England just held on.

It was an agonising end to a valiant run chase by the cricketing minnows, who put England’s premier bowlers Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid to the sword.

Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook scored quick fifties, but Nepal took regular wickets as England made 184-7 on Sunday in their opening Group C match of the T20 World Cup in Mumbai.

It could have been so much better for the Nepalis, but Will Jacks smashed three spectacular sixes off the final over from Karan KC.

The all-rounder’s late cameo of 39 not out off 18 balls took England to the highest total of the tournament so far and left Nepal with a target of 185 to pull off a huge upset.

Brook won the toss and elected to bat on the same pitch that had been deployed for the India-USA clash the previous night.

Nepal’s captain Rohit Paudel said he would have bowled anyway and his spin-heavy attack successfully squeezed the England batters for most of the 20 overs until the late onslaught from Jacks.

Opener Phil Salt perished off the first ball from Sher Malla, top-edging the spinner to short fine leg.

It brought Bethell to the crease and the left-hander immediately made a statement with two fours and a six off the same Malla over.

Jos Buttler made a quickfire 26 before he edged a lifting ball from Nandan Yadav to wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh.

Bethell was looking imperious and, despite losing Tom Banton cheaply, he reached his fifty off 28 balls with two consecutive towering sixes.

Joined by Brook at 57-3, the pair took the total past the hundred mark in the 12th over.

Bethell departed for 55 to end a 71-run partnership after being caught at deep mid-on attempting another big blow. He hit four sixes and four fours.

Sam Curran joined Brooks but did not last long, bowled by Dipendra Singh Airee for two and England were 137-5 in the 16th over.

Brook brought up his fifty off 31 balls with a third six but was caught in the deep off the next delivery and England were 157-6 with 10 balls remaining before Jacks’s late charge.

For Nepal, Airee with 2-23 and Yadav, who took 2-25, were the pick of the bowlers.
