President’s Cup One-Day tournament to commence on 3 October

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the President’s Cup One-Day tournament will commence from 3 October across five cities.

President’s Cup will feature nine departmental cricket teams. The two semi-finals will be played on 13 and 14 October, while the final of the tournament will be staged on 16 October.

All the matches will be day with the first ball expected to be bowled at 9.30 AM. The venues and start time for the semi-final and final will be announced in due course.

A prize pot of PKR7.75 million will be up for grabs as the winner of the tournament will bag PKR5 million while the runners-up will collect PKR2.5 million.

Higher Education Commission (HEC), Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) are placed in Group A, while Eshaal Associates, Ghani Glass, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), Pakistan Television (PTV) and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) are part of Group B.

SNGPL, the winners of the previous edition of the President’s Cup, will play their opening match of the tournament against Ghani Glass on 3 October at Saeed Sports City Bedian, Lahore.

The Group A matches will take place in Abbottabad, Islamabad and Rawalpindi while the Group B matches are set to be staged in Faisalabad and Lahore.

Mohammad Yousuf steps down as Pakistan’s selection committee member

Former Pakistan batter Mohammad Yousuf resigned from his role as a member of the national selection committee on Sunday, as confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The 50-year-old took to social media on Sunday to share the news, citing personal reasons for his decision.

“I announce my resignation as a selector for the Pakistan cricket team due to personal reasons. Serving this incredible team has been a profound privilege, and I am proud to have contributed to the growth and success of Pakistan Cricket,” Mohammad Yousuf said in his post on X.

“I have immense faith in the talent and spirit of our players, and wish our team all the best as they continue to strive for greatness,” he added.

The cricket board later confirmed Yousuf’s resignation through a press release on their website.

“The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) today announced that Mohammad Yousuf has voluntarily stepped down from his role as a member of the national selection committee to focus on other key responsibilities within the cricket board,” the PCB’s press release stated.

“The PCB expresses its sincere gratitude to Mohammad Yousuf for his invaluable contributions during his tenure as a selection committee member. Yousuf will continue to play a pivotal role at the PCB, sharing his extensive knowledge and experience as the batting coach at the High-Performance Centre.”

Yousuf was the head coach of the Pakistan U19 side that finished third in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 in South Africa.

The former legend, who represented Pakistan in 90 Test matches, 288 ODIs, and three T20Is during his illustrious career, was appointed as selector in March 2024. He played a key role in selecting the Pakistani squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.

PCB reveals team names, schedule of Champions One-Day Cup

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday announced the names of five participating teams and the schedule for the upcoming Champions One-Day Cup.

The five teams — Dolphins, Lions, Panthers, Stallions and Wolves will square off in the single-league tournament at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad from 12 September.

The opening match will be played between the Wolves and the Panthers, while the final is scheduled to be played on 29 September.

Except for the 16 September match between Lions and Panthers, which will commence at 9.30 am local time, all other 13 matches will begin at 3 pm.

Lions and Panthers will go toe to toe in a morning match to allow Pakistan women’s versus South Africa women’s T20I to be broadcast live.

The PCB on Monday announced Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shoaib Malik and Waqar Younis as mentors of the five Champions Cup sides.

However, their team and the 15-player squads of each time will be revealed in the coming days.

Punjab government assures PCB of infallible arrangements for Asia Cup

LAHORE: The Chief Secretary and Ministers of the caretaker Punjab government, on Friday, assured the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) representatives of infallible arrangements for the upcoming Asia Cup matches in Lahore and Multan.

PCB management committee chairman Zaka Ashraf along with PCB officials met the representatives of Punjab’s caretaker government including the adviser to caretaker CM Punjab, Wahab Riaz, at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore.

During the meeting, both parties assured to provide the best facilities to the cricket fans during ACC Asia Cup matches to be held in Multan and Lahore.

Punjab government as well as PCB expressed their commitment to provide the fans with the best yet smooth security arrangements so that they can enjoy the game at their best.

The meeting took place in an excellent environment and both sides ensured to resolve all the past issues amicably. It was also decided that a new mechanism should be formed to make sure that future affairs must be conducted smoothly.

Notably, during Najam Sethi’s tenure earlier in the year, a deadlock emerged between the PCB and the caretaker Punjab government over the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season eight’s Lahore and Rawalpindi leg security expenditures.

The Punjab government demanded PCB pay off PKR 500m to make security arrangements for the second leg of the ongoing extravaganza. At the same time, the cricket board was adamant about not paying the stipulated sum.

This year’s Asia Cup will kick off with host Pakistan taking on Nepal in the curtain raiser on August 30 in Multan.

Pakistan will host a total of four matches including a Super 4s fixture.

India’s group stage matches including the anticipated clash against Pakistan, scheduled on September 2, will be held in Kandy while the rest of the Super 4s matches, including the final will be played in Colombo.

The arch-rivals Pakistan and India will come face to face again on September 10 in Colombo if both manage to qualify for the Super 4s.

The upcoming edition of the Asia Cup features six teams, divided into two groups, the top two teams from each group will then qualify for the Super 4s. The continental event will run from August 31 to September 17.

Hosts Pakistan are placed in the same group as arch-rivals India and Nepal while the other group includes defending champions and co-hosts Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The Asia Cup 2023 will be played in the ODI format and will serve as an opportunity for the Asian teams to bolster their preparations for the upcoming ICC Men’s World Cup.

Inzamam-ul-Haq named Pakistan team’s chief selector for second time

LAHORE: Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has been appointed chief selector of the national men’s team for the second time.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Monday that Inzamam, who was recently appointed to the Cricket Technical Committee (CTC), has officially taken on the role of chief selector for the men’s team.

Inzamam-ul-Haq took over the position previously held by Haroon Rashid, who resigned last month. The former captain previously held the position from 2016 to 2019.

During his tenure, his selected team won the 2017 Champions Trophy under the captaincy of Sarfaraz Ahmed, while in the 2019 World Cup, they missed a spot in the semi-final due to the inferior net run rate.

Pakistan team’s director Mickey Arthur was the national head coach during Inzamam’s last tenure.

Inzamam-ul-Haq’s appointment came at a crucial time as his selection committee will be tasked to select squads for the Asia Cup, as well as the ODI World Cup later this year.

Prior to that, he will also be naming the squad that will be touring Sri Lanka for the series against Afghanistan, which will commence on August 22.

The PCB’s Cricket Technical Committee (CTC), led by Misbah-ul-Haq, suggested the former captain’s name to the PCB Management Committee chairman, Zaka Ashraf. The CTC comprises former captain Mohammad Hafeez as well.

The committee is supposed to provide recommendations on cricket-related matters, including, but not limited to the overall domestic structure, scheduling, playing conditions, the appointment of the national selection committees, the appointment of national team coaches, central and domestic contracts and plans for the development of umpires, referees and curators.

Additionally, they have the authority to invite other cricket specialists and are required to provide regular updates to the head of the PCB Management Committee.

PCB to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1992 World Cup

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1992 World Cup triumph with great enthusiasm during the final day of the third and deciding Test of the ongoing Benaud-Qadir Trophy.

According to the PCB, The 1992 World Cup trophy will be placed tomorrow at Gaddafi Stadium on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Pakistan’s maiden glory in a global event.

The fans sitting in the enclosures will be also allowed to take selfies and pictures with the glittering trophy. Whereas, the trophy will also be taken to the dressing rooms of both Pakistan and Australia.
