Salman Ali Agha picks four future stars for Pakistan cricket

Pakistan T20I captain Salman Ali Agha has named four players that he believes could be the backbone of the national team in the years to come.

Speaking during a special Eid transmission on a local news channel, the all-rounder was asked to name individuals he sees as central to Pakistan cricket’s progress over the next five years.

In response, he named Hasan Nawaz, Saim Ayub, Mohammad Haris, and Sahibzada Farhan as the ones to watch.

“I believe there are four players around whom the future of Pakistan cricket will revolve, Hasan Nawaz, Saim Ayub, Mohammad Haris, and Sahibzada Farhan,” Salman said.

“These four, in my opinion, are capable of winning matches for Pakistan going forward.”

The remarks come at a time when Pakistan cricket is going through a transitional phase, with the spotlight increasingly on young talent emerging from domestic circuits and franchise leagues.

Under Salman’s leadership, Pakistan recently whitewashed Bangladesh 3-0 in a home ODI series played in Lahore.

Hasan Nawaz and Mohammad Haris, in particular, were among the standout performers, carrying forward their aggressive form from the recently concluded PSL 10.

Salman Ali Agha also reflected on his cricketing inspirations, naming former batting great Mohammad Yousuf as his idol.

“I used to like Mohammad Yousuf’s batting a lot. I followed him closely. Even now, if I’m stuck somewhere, I go to YouTube and watch his videos,” he shared, adding that on the international stage, he admired former Australian captain Michael Clarke.

He also addressed speculation about team dynamics, asserting that minor disagreements between players are natural but shouldn’t be misunderstood.

“There is nothing personal between cricketers. When people spend time together, differences are natural — whether it’s within a household or a team. There’s no politics involved,” he clarified.

“We spend 10–11 months of the year together, so small differences are bound to happen.”

No Pakistani cricketers picked in The Hundred 2025 draft

In a surprising turn of events, no cricketer from Pakistan managed to attract franchises, as they all went unsold during The Hundred 2025 draft, held on Wednesday.

Despite 45 Pakistani players registering for the draft — a mix of seasoned stars and emerging talents — none of the eight franchises showed interest in them.

Pace sensation Naseem Shah entered The Hundred 2025 draft with the highest reserve price among Pakistan players—£120,000. Meanwhile, all-rounder Imad Wasim and explosive left-hander Saim Ayub had set their base price at £78,500.

The list also included Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali, and Mohammad Hasnain, each carrying a ÂŁ63,000 reserve price, while Mohammad Amir and Azam Khan’s base price was ÂŁ52,000.

This outcome highlights concerns about the inconsistent performances of Pakistani players in recent months, which may have influenced the franchises’ decisions.

Meanwhile, David Warner, Georgia Voll and Jamie Overton were three of the biggest names to be selected in The Hundred 2025 Draft.

Australia’s Georgia Voll was the first pick in the women’s competition, while big-hitting England all-rounder Jamie Overton went first in the men’s competition.

Legendary Australian opener David Warner will join Overton and Justin Langer in calling Lord’s their new home. England all-rounder Paige Scholfield enjoyed The Hundred Draft, returning to Oval Invincibles in the top bracket at ÂŁ65k.

Overton and Warner will both be involved in the competition opener, alongside Kane Williamson, a local derby against Oval Invincibles on Tuesday, 5 August.

Voll, fresh off the back of an unbeaten 99 in the Women’s Premier League and a stellar year that’s seen her make her international debut, will join fellow Australians Ellyse Perry and Megan Schutt at Edgbaston.

Other names to be picked up included Heather Knight, Rachin Ravindra, David Willey, Deandra Dottin, Noor Ahmad and Sophia Dunkley.

They join a host of international and England superstars already selected for the competition, including Steve Smith, Hayley Matthews, Kane Williamson, Beth Mooney, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Jos Buttler.

In total, 66 players were selected in The Hundred Draft, with the 16 men’s and women’s squads now almost finalised.

All teams will have a further chance to add to their group at the Vitality Wildcard Draft in May, rewarding form in the Vitality Blast men’s and women’s competitions.

‘Keep 90s players away’ Rashid Latif issues bold statement on Pakistan cricket

Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif has made a bold statement about Pakistan cricket, asserting that cricketers from the 90s should be kept away from key roles.

While speaking on a Private TV channel, Rashid shed light on Pakistan team’s inability to win the ICC tournaments.

The former wicket-keeper suggested that the former cricketers from the 90s, especially the 1992 World Cup winning squad, should be kept away from key roles in Pakistan cricket.

“It took 17 years [for Pakistan to win another World Cup] because the 90s players did not spare Pakistan cricket,” said Rashid.

“Keep 90s players away from management and the team, then they will try to win.”

Rashid Latif emphasised that the players from this era have served Pakistan cricket for a long time and should now be rested.

“They have been serving Pakistan cricket for so long now. So, I think, they should rest now,” said former wicket-keeper.

For the unversed, the hosts and defending champions, Pakistan, crashed out of the Champions Trophy after successive defeats at the hands of New Zealand and India.

The Men in Green’s final group game against Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain, leaving the 2017 edition winners without a win in their first ICC event hosted in nearly three decades.

2024 — a rollercoaster year for Pakistan cricket

The year 2024 for Pakistan cricket was a roller-coaster ride—full of ups and downs, unexpected twists, and unforgettable moments.

The first half was disappointing, with several heartbreaking defeats, but the team managed to turn things around in the latter half, making it a see-saw year. Let’s take a closer look at how the year 2024 unfolded for Pakistan cricket.

A Rocky Start to the Year

Pakistan’s year began with high hopes, but it quickly turned into a nightmare. Shan Masood, taking over as the Test captain, faced a stern test right from the beginning as Pakistan was handed a humiliating 3-0 whitewash in Australia.

The team’s struggles continued as they faced New Zealand in a five-match T20I series, where Pakistan suffered a 4-1 defeat. This series marked Shaheen Afridi’s first and only stint as captain of the national team so far.

This heavy defeat came after Babar Azam was replaced by Shaheen, only to be reinstated later as the captain ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which reportedly created friction between the two.

Amid the leadership chaos, Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim came out of retirement, declaring their availability for the mega-event.

A Bumpy Road to the T20 World Cup

Under Babar Azam’s leadership, Pakistan’s T20 World Cup preparations did not go as planned. They struggled in the lead-up to the tournament, drawing a five-match T20I series at home against a second-string New Zealand side.

Pakistan’s performance took another hit when they toured Ireland for a three-match T20I series. While they bounced back to win 2-1 after a historic first-ever T20I loss to Ireland, their form remained shaky.

They then toured England for a final pre-World Cup series, only to lose 0-2, with two matches washed out.

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup Heartbreak

The Pakistan team entered the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with lacklustre momentum, having won only one series—against Ireland. Their poor form came to the fore in the tournament, where they were knocked out in the group stage, a bitter blow to their campaign.

The Green Shirts’ campaign took a devastating turn with an unexpected defeat to the USA in the group stage. Meanwhile, in the much-anticipated clash against arch-rivals India, they narrowly lost by six runs while chasing a modest total of 120.

The defeats against the USA and India left Pakistan’s World Cup hopes hanging by a thread. Pakistan’s exit from the tournament was sealed with a heartbreaking abandonment of the crucial USA-Ireland fixture, officially marking the end of their campaign.

They returned home after consolation victories against Canada and Ireland.

Islamabad United’s Historic PSL Victory

A highlight of 2024 was the thrilling final of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024, where Islamabad United claimed their third PSL title. They triumphed over Multan Sultans in a nail-biting finish, with young Hunain Shah playing a pivotal role in guiding his team to victory.

Despite a shaky middle-order performance, Islamabad’s strong start, spearheaded by Colin Munro and Martin Guptill, and crucial contributions from Azam Khan and Imad Wasim, ensured they could chase down 160 to win. The victory was made sweeter as Islamabad United became the first team to win three PSL titles, solidifying their dominance in the competition.

The Historic Test Whitewash Against Bangladesh

After the T20 World Cup debacle, Pakistan’s cricketing woes continued in the Test format. Under Shan Masood’s leadership, Pakistan suffered a humiliating 2-0 whitewash against Bangladesh, their first-ever loss to the Tigers in a Test series.

Pakistan, who had an undefeated record against Bangladesh in Test cricket before this series, were stunned by a 2-0 loss, which included a crushing 10-wicket defeat in the first Test. The defeat raised serious questions about the team’s approach to Test cricket and left the captain, Shan Masood, under immense pressure.

Pakistan’s Comeback Against England

Things took a dramatic turn when Pakistan faced England in a three-match Test series. After a heavy defeat in the first Test by an innings and 47 runs, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made bold changes.

A new selection committee was appointed, which included Aqib Javed and Aleem Dar. The new committee made several key decisions like dropping several senior players and bringing in spinners Noman Ali and Sajid Khan.

The strategy of preparing dry pitches and introducing innovative methods like gas-powered patio heaters and industrial fans for spin-friendly conditions worked wonders. Pakistan’s spinners dominated, claiming 39 of the 40 wickets in the series, leading to a remarkable turnaround as Pakistan won 2-1, much to the relief of their supporters.

A New Dawn Under Mohammad Rizwan

The appointment of Mohammad Rizwan as the new white-ball captain also marked a turning point for Pakistan.

Under Rizwan, Pakistan pulled off a historic series win in Australia, clinching a 2-1 victory in a three-match ODI series—Pakistan’s first series win in Australia since 2002. Haris Rauf was instrumental in the win, taking 10 wickets and earning the Player of the Series award.

However, the success was short-lived, as Pakistan was swept 3-0 in the subsequent T20 series against Australia, where their batting struggled against the pace attack.

Pakistan’s fortunes in ODI cricket continued to improve under Rizwan as he led the team to a 2-1 victory in Zimbabwe, followed by a historic victory against South Africa.

Pakistan started the tour with a heartbreaking loss in the T20I series, however, they bounced back to become the first team to clean-sweep South Africa in an ODI series, winning 3-0.

Young opening batter Saim Ayub was the star of the series as he scored 235 runs, with two centuries, and claimed two wickets in three matches. His all-around contributions earned him the Player of the Series award.

A Year that Ended with Thrills and Heartbreak

The year ended with another exciting yet heartbreaking chapter for Pakistan as they faced South Africa in a two-match Test series.

Pakistan fought valiantly in the Boxing Day Test, with Abbas, returning to the international fold after three years, picking up six wickets in the second innings, while defending a modest total.

But despite his heroics, Pakistan fell short by just two wickets, as Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen guided South Africa to victory in a thrilling finish.

Iftikhar Ahmed acknowledges need for Pakistan to adopt attacking mindset

All-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed has highlighted the lack of an attacking mindset behind the Pakistan cricket team’s struggles in the recent past.

The Green Shirts have been under fire for the last one year, owing to their below-par performances in the multi-nation events.

Pakistan, under the captaincy of Babar Azam, were knocked out from the group stages of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 as well as the T20 World Cup 2024.

Moreover, recently the Green Shirts succumbed to a 2-0 loss in the two-match series against Bangladesh.

Iftikhar Ahmed, during a conversation on a YouTube channel, acknowledged the team’s recent struggles, while stressing the need to adopt an aggressive mindset.

“Australia, England and India, in my opinion, have a mindset of playing attacking cricket whether they are batting or bowling, which is why they are so dominant,” said the 34-year all-rounder.

“In my opinion, the Pakistan team needs to adopt such attacking strategies in their play otherwise we will not be able to beat the bigger sides in world cricket,” he added.

Pakistan are set to host England for a three-match Test series against England, starting from October 7.

The three-match series will run from October 7 to 28 and is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25.

PCB to hold high-profile meeting to decide on Pakistan team’s future, captaincy

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to hold a high-profile meeting and workshop to discuss the future of the national cricket team as well as all-format captaincy.

According to the sources, the meeting, dubbed the “Connection Camp” is likely to be held on September 22 and will be presided by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who will also attend the workshop.

The high-profile meeting will also feature the current head coaches of the Pakistan red-ball and white-ball teams, Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten respectively, accompanied by the heads of international, domestic, and high-performance departments while senior cricketers, coaches and PCB officials will also be in the attendance.

Notably, Kirsten had left for South Africa after submitting his report regarding the Pakistan cricket team’s performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 whereas Gillespie left for Australia after the conclusion of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh this week.

Details further suggested that the future of the current Pakistan white-ball captain Babar Azam will come under discussion and there is a chance that he may get removed from the position ahead of Pakistan’s tour to Australia later this year.

Babar, who relinquished all-format captaincy following the national team’s dismal run at the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023, was reinstated as white-ball captain in March this year.

He led Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 where the former champions suffered gut-wrenching defeats against United States of America (USA) and arch-rivals India, which eventually resulted in them failing to qualify for the Super Eights stage for the first time in the tournament’s history.

Meanwhile, Shan Masood’s captaincy as Pakistan Test captain has also come under scrutiny.

Remember, Shan, who was given the leadership of the Pakistan Test side in November 2023, is yet to lead the national team to a victory. He has lost five matches as Pakistan Test captain, three against Australia and two against Bangladesh.

Former chief selector opens up on dealing with ‘stubborn’ Babar Azam

Former Pakistan batter Mohammad Wasim has recently opened up about his tensions with white-ball captain Babar Azam during his tenure as the chief selector.

During an interview with a local sports platform, Mohammad Wasim labelled Babar Azam as “very stubborn” for his resistance to the selection committee’s decisions.

“It was painful to make him understand the advantages of changes. He was very stubborn, and I overstepped my limitations to get him on board with certain calls. He was not ready to accept changes,” Wasim revealed.

The former opening batter also highlighted the issues of all-rounder Imad Wasim, who according to Wasim hid his knee injury from the management.

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

“Imad has a knee injury, but he has been hiding it for years. We always speak about Azam Khan’s fitness levels, but Imad is also suffering from the same problem,” he added.

“He was dropped from the side for that same reason, and I also dropped him during my tenure so that he could work on his fitness.”

Mohammad Wasim made a shocking revelation, indicating that there is a specific group of players whose negative impact on the national team is similar to that of cancer, and is harming the team’s ability to succeed.

“I will not take names, but four coaches said that a group of players is cancer to the team. If they are part of the squad, Pakistan can’t win. I tried to remove them from the team, but the team management recalled them,” he concluded.

PCB chief Naqvi laments lack of “tools for surgery” of Pakistan team

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi clarified his previous remarks regarding the surgery of the national men’s team, lamenting the lack of a pool of players.

Naqvi on Monday, interacted with the media here at Gaddafi Stadium and asserted that the senior men’s selection committee does not have a pool of players, whom they can pick as the replacement for the under-performing players, thus, indicating that the surgery of the team has been put on hold.

“The problem is that our selection committee does not have a bank [of players] from which they can select the players.

“If we used to talk about the surgery, it was because we definitely wanted to rectify our shortcomings.

“But for that, we do not have [enough players] and data, on the basis which we can say that we have a list of 10-25 players to replace for example four players.”

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

Mohsin Naqvi then claimed that the upcoming Champions Cup will help Pakistan Cricket to explore and unearth new talent and also that the selection committee would have an ample pool of players to make changes in the setup after the completion of the domestic tournament.

“We will have a crop of talent from the Champions Cup, we would have the record as well then we would be able to do whatever needed. The problem with the surgery is that one should have sufficient tools.

“Once the Champions Cup gets completed and the record gets maintained then we would have a pool of around 150 players. After that, the selection would easily decide who needs to be replaced by whom and who needs the surgery.”

Mohsin Naqvi also commented on the scheduling of the ongoing Test series between Pakistan and Bangladesh and clarified that the decision to host the second Test in Karachi had already been made prior to his involvement, but he later decided to alter that decision due to the ongoing renovation at the venue.
