No fissure in the team, claims Babar after Imam’s cryptic tweet

KARACHI: Pakistan all-format captain Babar Azam has dispelled the impression of a rift between the players of the national team, saying, ‘The unity of the team is intact and there are no differences in the team at all.’

Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq posted a tweet on Sunday, believed to be an indirect way of venting out his anger for being benched in the fourth and fifth ODI of the recently concluded PAK vs NZ ODI series.

“Life is an unexpected journey so never expect anything from anyone”. Be patient, Allah is watching,” he wrote.

When Babar was asked about Imam’s cryptic tweet during the post-match press conference on Sunday, he replied he had not seen the tweet and would see it later.

“No one gets angry in this team. The unity of our team is phenomenal and it will remain like this,” he added.

“And when something like this happens we try to keep to ourselves because the trust level between us is quite good.”

The 28-year-also also shrugged off the reports that Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to retain him as the captain till the ODI World Cup later this year, saying, he had not been informed.

“I am not aware if the board has made that decision. There hasn’t been any communication with me in this regard.”

However, while commenting on Pakistan’s possible squad for the mega event, Babar said he and the management had 15 to 20 players in mind whose names would only be revealed before the World Cup.

“Every match before the World Cup is important for us and we are trying to utilize it,” he said.

Elaborating on the team’s performance in the recently concluded five-game ODI series against New Zealand, the Pakistan captain said, “There were many positives and we were able to check on our bench strength in the series”

“We tried to clean sweep the Black Caps but the way we planned, we couldn’t finish it that way.”

“We planned to finish the series on a better note; however, early wickets led to our defeat,” he lamented.

Tom Latham-led New Zealand took a 47-run consolation win in the final ODI at National Bank Cricket Arena on Sunday to deny Pakistan a 5-0 clean sweep in the series.

The defeat dethroned Pakistan from the No.1 spot in the ODI rankings which they achieved for the first time in history following their dominant win in the fourth ODI on Friday.

Phillips stars as New Zealand down Pakistan in ODI series decider

KARACHI: New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips put on a scintillating show with his brisk 63-run knock and powered his side to defeat Pakistan by two wickets in the ODI series decider.

Set to chase 281, New Zealand amassed the total on the first delivery of the 49th over at the back of a quickfire 63-run knock of Phillips.

The touring side had a decent start to their run chase as openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway provided an important 43-run partnership before Allen got run out in the eighth over after scoring a run-a-ball 25.

Following the dismissal, Conway and skipper Kane Williamson anchored the run chase with a gritty partnership and took New Zealand to over the 100-run mark before Agha Salman picked up his maiden ODI wicket and provided a much-needed breakthrough to Pakistan.

Conway scored 52 off 65 deliveries, laced with five boundaries and a six.

Williamson then joined hands with Daryl Mitchell and put on another important partnership for his side as the duo added 52 runs for the third wicket before both Mitchell perished for 31.

New Zealand skipper Williamson then brought up his 42nd half-century but could not stick for long as he got run out for 53 off 68 deliveries with the help of two boundaries.

With New Zealand struggling at 181/5 after Michael Bracewell’s departure in the 36th over, Phillips came out for his side and turned the game on its head with clean striking and put Pakistan bowlers under pressure.

The right-handed batter scored a quickfire half-century off just 28 deliveries and brought New Zealand back into the game despite no support from the other end.

Amid Phillips’ brilliance, New Zealand kept losing wickets but the right-handed batter stood firm and drove his side to glory in the 49th over.

Phillips top-scored for New Zealand with an unbeaten 63 off just 42 deliveries, hitting four fours and four sixes.

Salman Ali Agha and Mohammad Wasim Jr took two wickets each, while Mohammad Nawaz and Usama Mir made one scalp each.

Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan posted a decent 280/9 on the board at the back of a brilliant century and a half-century from Fakhar and Rizwan respectively.

The hosts had a dismal start to their innings as they lost two early wickets including their skipper Babar Azam for a mere 21 in the seventh over.

Following the setback, Fakhar and Rizwan scripted an astounding recovery for Pakistan as they added 154 runs amid their third-wicket partnership and brought Pakistan back into the game.

Rizwan was the core aggressor of the stand as he kept ticking the scoreboard with his sensible rotation of strike while Fakhar played an anchoring role.

The duo frustrated the Kiwi bowlers and were looking for their team to amass the 300-run mark before Ish Sodhi provided a much-needed breakthrough to his side in the form of Rizwan.

The leg-spinner castled Rizwan with a googly and brought an end to his vital 79-run knock. He faced 74 deliveries and hit six boundaries.

Following Rizwan’s dismissal, Fakhar continued to push for the runs and soon brought up his century. The left-handed batter, however, soon perished after achieving the landmark and remained the top-scorer for his side in the series decider.

Fakhar scored 101 off 120 deliveries, laced with 10 boundaries and a six.

With both set batters back in the pavilion, Pakistan batters struggled to pound on the foundation and the hosts began to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Agha Salman, however, stood firm at one end while wickets were tumbling at the other before perishing in the final over after a vital 43-ball 45.

Veteran pacer Tim Southee led the bowling attack for New Zealand with three wickets, while Lockie Ferguson bagged a couple. Spinners Sodhi and Michael Bracewell struck out a batter each.

Rizwan, Naseem aid Pakistan’s dominating triumph over New Zealand

KARACHI: Young pacer Naseem Shah rattled New Zealand’s batting line-up with a five-wicket haul before wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan led Pakistan to a six-wicket triumph with an unbeaten knock of 77 runs in the first ODI against New Zealand.

Set to chase a regulation 256, Pakistan sailed through in the 49th over at the back of half-centuries from Fakhar Zaman, captain Babar and Rizwan.

The hosts had an unwanted start to the run chase as they lost their in-form opening batter Imam-ul-Haq cheaply in just the sixth over. The second-ranked batter could score 11 off 14.

Following the early setback, top-ranked batter Babar stood up for his team and stitched a vital second-wicket partnership with Fakhar.

The duo neutralized the shaky start as they added 78 amid their stand while Fakhar amassed his 16th ODI half-century.

The left-handed batter, however, could not stretch his knock further and was castled by Michael Bracewell after scoring 56 off 74 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries.

Babar then joined hands with Rizwan and added 60 runs in another important partnership for his side and soon brought up his 23rd ODI half-century to carry his exceptional form.

But the top-ranked batter was unable to convert his fifty into a century as he was stumped off Bracewell’s clever delivery outside leg. He scored 66 off 82 deliveries including five boundaries and a six.

Making his return to ODI cricket after a gap of more than two years, Haris Sohail did not take much time to settle down and played an integral role in accelerating Pakistan’s march towards the target.

The left-handed batter scored a brisk 32 off 23 deliveries before falling to Tim Southee as his fourth-wicket partnership witnessed him and Rizwan adding 54 runs in 51 deliveries.

Sohail’s dismissal did not halt Pakistan’s pursuit much as Rizwan continued to score freely and was supported well by Salman Ali Agha – who scored 13 off 10 – to lead Pakistan to a swift six-wicket victory.

The wicketkeeper-batter top-scored for his side with an unbeaten 77 off 86 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and a six.

Following the triumph, the Green Shirts have now won nine consecutive ODI matches.

Batting first, on the invitation of Pakistan captain Babar Azam, New Zealand could manage to amass 255/9 in their allotted 50 overs.

The touring side had a dismal start to their innings as they lost opening batter Devon Conway for a golden duck in the first over.

Following the early setback, young opener Finn Allen attempted to launch a counter-attack on Pakistan pacers as he looked to accelerate his innings before Mohammad Wasim Jr struck to bring an end to his courageous 29-run knock.

Skipper Kane Williamson then started the recovery for his side with Daryl Mitchell and added 32 runs for the third wicket before debutant Usama Mir cleaned up the former with a stunning delivery.

Following the captain’s dismissal, Mitchell stitched a gritty 76-run partnership with Tom Latham and frustrated Pakistan bowlers as they batted for over 12 overs.

The fourth-wicket partnership began to threaten the hosts as both Mitchell and Latham had settled down but Nawaz delivered a perfect Jaffa to castle Mitchell, who could score 36 off 55 deliveries.

The hosts then enjoyed another success in the form of Latham’s wicket while Usama celebrated his second ODI wicket. The wicketkeeper-batter remained the second top-scorer for his side with a 52-ball 42, laced with three boundaries.

Following the slump, Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell stood up for their team and stitched a vital 76-run partnership to bring their side back in the game.

The duo appeared solid and was eyeing to accelerate late in the innings before Phillips mistimed a lofted shot and saw the end of his fighting knock. He could score 37 off 53 deliveries with the help of one boundary and a six.

After removing Phillips, Naseem ran through the lower order as he removed Bracewell and debutant Henry Shipley in consecutive deliveries.

Bracewell top-scored for New Zealand with a gritty 43 off 42 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and a six.

With their side struggling at 220/8 in the 46th over, Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee added crucial 31 runs amid their ninth-wicket partnership before Naseem outdid Santner with a slower delivery to complete his second five-wicket haul in ODIs.

Besides Naseem’s five-for, debutant Usama impressed with two wickets for just 42 runs, while Nawaz and Wasim Jr struck out a batter each.
