Bowlers propel New Zealand to a series-levelling triumph over Pakistan

KARACHI: New Zealand bowlers displayed a combined effort to bundle out Pakistan for a mere 182 and sealed a dominating series-levelling victory in the second ODI.

Set to chase 262, Pakistan’s batting lineup failed completely and could amass 182 runs despite a fighting 79-run knock from skipper Babar Azam and thus, handed a dominating victory to the touring side.

The hosts had a poor start to their 262-run pursuit as they lost both their openers – Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman – for just nine runs.

Following the slump, skipper Babar and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan tried to anchor the run chase as they stitched a cautious partnership.

The duo added 55 runs for the second-wicket stand but remained too slow in the process as they conceded 99 deliveries.

New Zealand finally found their third breakthrough in the 20th over when Mitchell Santner castled Rizwan with a perfect off-spinner. The right-handed batter could score 28 runs off 50 deliveries.

Following Rizwan’s dismissal, Pakistan began to lose wickets at an alarming rate and soon slipped to 124/5 with Salman Ali Agha, who attempted to charge on the Kiwi bowlers departed after getting run out.

Besides Agha, none of the batters could stay for long at the crease and offered a helping hand to Babar, who saw his side slipping further to 173/8 in the 42nd over.

The top-ranked ODI batter then also perished in the next over after getting stumped off Ish Sodhi. He remained the top-scorer for his side with a fighting 79-run knock in 114 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries and a six.

Sodhi then struck again on the last delivery of his over to power his side to a thumping 79-run victory over Pakistan as New Zealand levelled the three-match series 1-1.

Southee and Sodhi bagged two wickets each, while Michael Bracewell, Santner, Glenn Phillips and Ferguson struck out a batter each.

New Zealand, batting first after winning the toss, could only manage to amass 261 despite an astonishing second-wicket partnership between skipper Kane Williamson and Devon Conway with the latter scoring a century.

The touring side had an unwanted start to their innings as they lost their opener Finn Allen in the first over off Naseem Shah.

Following the early slump, skipper Williamson and opener Conway attempted to anchor the innings with a gritty second-wicket partnership as they added 181 runs at a decent pace.

Amid the second-wicket stand, New Zealand were eyeing to amass the 300-run mark but Naseem struck in the 30th over to remove Conway briefly after the latter’s century and broke the vital partnership.

Conway top-scored for New Zealand with 101 off 92 deliveries, laced with 13 boundaries and a six.

Following the much-needed breakthrough, Babar Azam’s move to bring spin paid off as Mohammad Nawaz pushed the touring side to the backfoot with back-to-back strikes in the 33rd over.

New Zealand then endured another major setback in the form of Williamson, who walked back after scoring an anchoring 82 off 100 balls with the help of 10 boundaries.

Following his dismissal, New Zealand lost wickets at an alarming rate, which halted their expedition towards a big total as eight of their batters could not amass double digits.

Besides Conway and Williamson, Santner remained the other notable run-getter as he offered a fightback with his gritty 37 off 40 deliveries before getting run out in the last over.

Nawaz led the bowling attack for Pakistan with 4/38, while Naseem claimed three wickets. Usama Mir and Haris Rauf, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

Bracewell replaces injured Henry in New Zealand squad for Pakistan ODIs

KARACHI: New Zealand made a last-minute change to their ODI squad ahead of the series opener against Pakistan, today, after fast bowler Matt Henry was ruled out of the side after picking an abdominal injury.

All-rounder Doug Bracewell received a late call-up to the Black Caps white-ball squad for ODIs in Pakistan and India as a replacement to Henry, who sustained the injury during the second Test against Pakistan.

The 32-year-old Bracewell is set to make his first appearance for the New Zealand side since April 2021 against the Netherlands.

“Matt has been one of the leaders of our ODI attack for a number of years and I know he’s disappointed to be missing out because of injury.” Kiwis head coach Gary Stead said.

“With important home series coming up, it’s vital he has time to recover properly over the coming weeks.”

New Zealand coach believed Bracewell would add experience to the side since he was familiar with the subcontinent conditions.

“Doug is a quality bowler with a lot of experience and we feel his skills best compliment the bowling mix we already have in the squads for Pakistan and India. He has experience across all three formats at international level, has experience in the subcontinent, and has already shown his range of skills this season.” Stead said.

It is pertinent to mention here that New Zealand will play three-match ODI series against Pakistan, commencing today, with the second and the final matches on January 11 and 13, respectively.

ODI Squads:

Pakistan: Babar Azam (captain), Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haris Sohail, Imam-ul-Haq, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Salman Ali Agha, Shahnawaz Dahani, Shan Masood, Tayyab Tahir and Usama Mir

‘No need to answer anyone’ Babar slams critics before New Zealand ODIs

KARACHI: Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam has sent a clear message to his critics, saying he does not have to appease anyone.

“My job is to play cricket and enjoy my game,” he said in a pre-series press talk on Sunday. “I do not need to answer or satisfy anyone. I know my game and my responsibility, be it as a batsman or as a captain.”

The strong reply from Pakistan’s captain came at a time when the national side has just finished its home Test season with a series whitewash by England, followed by a nil-nil draw against New Zealand.

Ahead of the three-match One-Day international series against New Zealand, commencing tomorrow, Babar said his team would try to switch from the Test mode as quickly as possible and continue their momentum in the white-ball format.

“We have been playing positive cricket in white ball. We will try to continue this momentum and begin this new year with positive results” he added.

Talking about Shan Masood’s possible inclusion in the playing XI since he has been named as the team’s vice-captain in the upcoming ODIs, the skipper maintained that none of the players was certain to play the upcoming matches.

“At this moment, I cannot say about any individual player, be it vice-captain or XYZ, that he will be part of playing XI ” he said.

“We will play our best XI and try to win this series” he added.

With three uncapped – Tayyab Tahir, Usama Mir and Kamran Ghulam – and two returning – Haris Sohail and Shan – players selected in the squad, Babar insisted it was not difficult for him to accommodate new faces in the team.

“They (Haris and Shan) have already played for Pakistan. Tayyab Tahir and Kamran Ghulam are the top performers in domestic cricket and they must grab it if they are given the opportunity to play for the national team” he said

The three-match series is a part of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. The second and third ODIs will take place on January 11 and 13, respectively.

Pakistan ODI Squad: Babar Azam (captain), Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haris Sohail, Imam-ul-Haq, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Salman Ali Agha, Shahnawaz Dahani, Shan Masood, Tayyab Tahir and Usama Mir

Usama Mir stunned with his inclusion in Pakistan’s squad for NZ ODIs

KARACHI: Pakistan’s young leg spinner Usama Mir was left awestruck following his inclusion in the recently-announced ODI squad for the home series against New Zealand.

Usama, who was adjudged the best bowler of the recently-concluded Pakistan Cup, got the reward for his consistent performance in the domestic tournament as he received maiden call-up to the national side for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand.

The leg-spinner was sensational in the Pakistan Cup 2022/23 as he picked up 28 wickets in 11 matches with the best bowling figures of 5/23.

The 27-year-old was not among the 24 probables announced for the home ODI series thus his shock inclusion left him awestruck.

Taking to Twitter, Usama expressed his excitement while at the same time looking astounded by the call-up.

“NO WAYYYYY,” Usama wrote on Twitter as interim chief selector Shahid Afridi announced his name among the ODI squad.

“Feels like a dream seeing my name selected in this squad. Alhamdulillah,” Usama wrote in another tweet.

It is apropos to mention that Usama was included in the squad in light of the interim selection committee’s decision of resting all-rounder Shadab Khan; citing an injury to his right index finger.

Besides him, left-handed batters Haris Sohail and Shan Masood returned to the ODI squad while two uncapped players Kamran Ghulam and Tayyab Tahir also received call-ups.

Sharjeel among 21 probables shortlisted for New Zealand ODIs

LAHORE: The Men’s Interim National Selection Committee on Wednesday announced 21 probables for the home ODI series against New Zealand, left-handed batter Sharjeel Khan included.
