Pakistan seal commanding win over South Africa in Lahore Test

LAHORE: Noman Ali and Shaheen Shah Afridi steered Pakistan to a dominant 93-run victory over South Africa in the first Test at the Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Chasing 277 for victory, South Africa’s hopes faded under relentless pressure as they were bowled out for 183 on the fourth day. Both Noman and Shaheen claimed four wickets apiece, ensuring Pakistan wrapped up the game before tea.

The visitors began the morning on shaky ground, and things only worsened when Shaheen Afridi struck with the third delivery of the day, removing Tony de Zorzi for 16 to give Pakistan an early breakthrough.

Noman Ali, who had already been Pakistan’s standout spinner throughout the match, continued his fine form by dismissing Tristan Stubbs for just two, tightening the screws further.

A brief resistance came from Dewald Brevis and Ryan Rickelton, who added 50 runs for the fifth wicket to take South Africa past the 100-run mark.

Brevis, showing character after a first-innings duck, struck a fluent 54 off 54 balls, including some confident strokes to keep the chase alive.

However, Noman broke the stand by removing Brevis at a crucial juncture, while Sajid Khan soon followed up by dismissing Rickelton for 41 off 73 balls, ending South Africa’s last real fightback.

At 137-6 by lunch, the Proteas were still 140 runs short of the target, with Kyle Verreynne (3) and Senuran Muthusamy (3) at the crease.

The pair offered little resistance after the break as Muthusamy fell prey to Sajid Khan, scoring a mere six runs.

Simon Harmer joined Verreynne, and they added 29 runs for the eighth wicket but could not stand a chance against Pakistan’s bowlers.

Shaheen Afridi came back onto the attack and took the remaining three wickets to seal Pakistan’s emphatic victory.

Verreynne departed after scoring 19 runs, while Prenelan Subrayen (8) and Kagiso Rabada (0) were Shaheen’s other victims. Harmer remained unbeaten for 14.

Other than Shaheen and Noman’s four-wicket hauls, Sajid Khan claimed two wickets for Pakistan.

Noman Ali takes four to put Pakistan on top in first South Africa Test

LAHORE: Tony de Zorzi led South Africa’s resistance while Noman Ali took four wickets, putting Pakistan in a strong position at stumps on the second day of the first Test at Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.

South Africa were 216-6 at the close of the play, with Tony de Zorzi remaining unbeaten on 81 from 140 balls while Senuran Muthusamy is not out on six from 19 deliveries.

The highlight of the session was a 94-run partnership between De Zorzi and Riyan Rickelton. Both batters struck half-centuries and brought the team’s total to 174.

The stand eventually culminated with the set of Rickelton’s wicket, courtesy of Agha Salman’s bowling. He made 71 from 137 with the help of nine fours and two sixes.

The wicket opened the door for Pakistan as Noman and Sajid sliced through the Proteas’ middle-order and put them in a similar position to Pakistan. The visitors went from 175-3 to 200-6 in a span of 10 overs.

Tristan Stubbs was caught behind for eight while Dewald Brevis fell for a golden duck. Kyle Verreynne could not trouble the scorers much as he made six from 19.

For Pakistan, Nomal Ali starred with the ball, picking up four wickets in his 27 overs.

South Africa were 10 without loss at lunch and batted steadily in the afternoon session.

Aiden Markram, who earlier crossed the 3,000-run milestone, was the first to fall after the interval, dismissed by Noman Ali for 20 off 37 balls with the score at 45-1.

Wiaan Mulder then joined Ryan Rickelton and the pair stitched together a cautious stand to stabilise the innings.

Rickelton continued to find the gaps while Mulder played some crisp drives before Noman struck again, removing the right-hander for 17 off 41 deliveries, including three boundaries.

Tony de Zorzi then arrived at the crease and rode his luck early, edging a couple of deliveries past the slips for boundaries.

His presence, however, proved valuable as he and Rickelton guided South Africa to 112-2 at Tea in 34 overs, trailing Pakistan by 266 runs.

Earlier, Senuran Muthusamy produced a brilliant spell of spin bowling to claim six wickets and help South Africa bowl out Pakistan for 378 in the first session.

Resuming their innings at 313 for five, Pakistan looked set for a big total as Salman Ali Agha and Mohammad Rizwan picked up where they left off, extending their sixth-wicket stand beyond 150, the highest for Pakistan against South Africa at home.

Both batters appeared in full control before Muthusamy turned the tide. He first broke the partnership by dismissing Rizwan for a hard-fought 75 off 140 deliveries, which included two fours and two sixes.

The left-arm spinner struck again almost immediately, removing Noman Ali and Sajid Khan for ducks to complete a well-deserved five-for.

Senuran Muthusamy continued to wreak havoc, bowling Shaheen Afridi for seven to register his sixth wicket, leaving Pakistan nine down.

The innings finally ended at 378 when off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen dismissed Salman Ali Agha for a composed 93 off 145 balls, an innings decorated with five fours and three sixes.

Muthusamy finished with superb figures of 6-117 in 32 overs, while Subrayen chipped in with two wickets. Kagiso Rabada and Simon Harmer claimed one apiece.

Babar Azam achieves major milestone during New Zealand clash

KARACHI: Pakistan batting maestro Babar Azam etched his name in the history books during the ongoing tri-nation series final against New Zealand here at National Bank Stadium on Friday.

During the first innings, Babar equalled South African batting legend Hashim Amla’s long-standing record of being the fastest to 6000 runs in ODI cricket, both achieving the feat in 123 innings.

Babar needed 10 runs to reach the milestone and he achieved the feat in the seventh over in style with a boundary off Jacob Duffy.

It’s worth noting that Babar Azam holds the record for being the fastest batter to score 5000 ODI runs, having achieved the landmark in 97 innings.

The right-handed batter is the 11th Pakistani batter to cross the landmark, meanwhile, legendary Inzamam-ul-Haq is the highest run-scorer from Pakistan in ODI cricket with 11701 runs.

Moreover, Babar has scored 19 ODI centuries, placing him in an impressive second position in the list of most hundreds by Pakistani batters.

He is just one century away from equaling the legendary Saeed Anwar’s record of 20 centuries.

Additionally, if Babar Azam manages to score his 20th century in the tri-nation ODI series final against New Zealand, he will become the second-fastest batter to achieve this feat.

Amla tops the list, having reached the milestone in 108 innings.

Babar Azam urges fans to stop calling him ‘King’

KARACHI: Pakistan star batter Babar Azam has urged fans to stop calling him “king,” stating that he doesn’t see himself as one yet after the team’s six-wicket victory over South Africa in the tri-nation ODI series here on Wednesday.

Skipper Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha smashed centuries to help Pakistan chase down a mammoth 353 and book their place in the final against New Zealand.

Despite a stunning batting show, Babar’s own struggles with the bat continued as he was trapped lbw by Wiaan Mulder for 23 runs, once again falling short of a big score.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Babar admitted he was disappointed with his recent form and inability to finish games for the team.

“Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to finish the innings, but Rizwan and Salman played brilliantly today. Performances like these lift the team’s confidence,” he said.

Babar Azam was quick to address the popular “king” title given to him by fans, requesting them to stop using it.

“Firstly, stop calling me a king. I’m not a king yet. Let’s see what people call me when I retire. Opening is a new role for me, and I’ve taken on this responsibility as per the team’s needs,” he added.

The former captain also shared insights into his mindset, revealing how he pushes himself to overcome challenges on the field.

“What I’ve done before is in the past. If I keep dwelling on previous performances, I won’t perform in the future. Every day is a new challenge with a new plan. Successfully chasing big totals like today boosts our confidence,” he concluded.

WATCH: Pakistan-South Africa players involved in heated onfield argument

KARACHI: The tri-nation ODI series clash between Pakistan and South Africa at the National Stadium here on Wednesday witnessed some heated moments, with tempers flaring during the first innings.

A heated altercation emerged in the 29th over when South Africa’s captain, Temba Bavuma, was run out after a disastrous mix-up with his partner.

Bavuma, who was leading from the front with a solid 82, fell short of his crease after a quick call for a single went horribly wrong.

The South African skipper pushed a length delivery to backward point and charged for a run, but his partner’s hesitation left him stranded.

Saud Shakeel, sharp in the field, fired in a direct throw to catch Bavuma well short. The umpire’s decision confirmed his dismissal, cutting short what could have been a match-defining knock.

Pakistan’s players erupted in celebration, but it was Saud and Kamran Ghulam (12th man) who made headlines with their intense send-off.

Saud, in particular, was fired up, celebrating right in front of Bavuma as he walked off—a charged moment that added spice to an already heated contest.

The tension had been building even before Bavuma’s run-out, as Shaheen Afridi and South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke clashed in the 28th over.

It started with a verbal exchange after Breetzke took a run down the middle of the pitch, irking Shaheen.

Mohammad Rizwan, Bavuma, and the on-field umpire had to step in to defuse the situation. But the drama didn’t end there.

On the final ball of the over, things boiled over when Shaheen charged towards Breetzke following an accidental collision.

The South African batter, running for a quick single, bumped into the fiery pacer while trying to avoid contact.

An agitated Shaheen confronted Breetzke, only for Khushdil Shah to intervene and push the South African away, with the umpire once again calming the scene.
