Harry Brook, Phil Salt star as England hammer New Zealand

CHRISTCHURCH: England skipper Harry Brook smashed 78 to steer his side to a thumping 65-run victory over New Zealand in the second T20I on Monday.

The visitors raced to a mammoth 236-4 from their 20 overs after Black Caps captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and elected to field at Hagley Oval.

Brook and opener Phil Salt (85) blasted New Zealand to all parts while the hosts didn’t help themselves with misfields, errant throwing, and dropped catches.

Wicketkeeper Tim Seifert dropped Jacob Bethell after a top edge swirled high in the strong northwest wind, and later James Neesham put down Brook.

The Brook drop was crucial, with the 26-year-old blasting 78 from just 35 deliveries as part of a 129-run partnership with Salt.

Brook showed his intent just two balls after he was dropped, smacking a powerful pull shot more than 100 metres over midwicket, the ball landing outside the ground.

He hit six fours and five sixes during his stay, finally falling after mistiming a lofted drive to long-on.

Salt played second fiddle for much of his innings, scoring 85 from 56 balls, rotating the strike before seizing on any loose bowling.

Brook said the pair tried to keep one another “calm and composed” during their century stand, while “looking to manipulate the field and put them under as much pressure as possible”.

Tom Banton blasted 29 from only 12 balls to end the innings, helping England to the highest T20 total scored in Christchurch.

New Zealand’s chase started poorly, losing both Tim Robinson and Rachin Ravindra in the second over.

It found life with Seifert and Mark Chapman, who combined for a 69-run partnership in quick time, but when both fell either side of the 10-over mark New Zealand’s pursuit had all but ended.

England’s spinners, Adil Rashid (4-32) and Liam Dawson (2-38), and seamer Brydon Carse (2-27) gave away little during their spells as New Zealand were bowled out for 171.

The third match of the T20 series will be played at Eden Park in Auckland on Thursday night.

Salt hits 141* as England crush South Africa with record 304 in T20I

Phil Salt hit his highest T20I score and quickest century by an England batter in a T20 international as the hosts hammered South Africa by 146 runs to level their three-match series at 1-1 during a record-breaking evening at Old Trafford on Friday.

Opening batter Salt’s astounding 141 not out was the cornerstone of England’s mammoth 304-2.

It was the first time in a T20 international between two Test-playing nations a side had reached 300, with India having come closest previously, scoring 297-6 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad in 2024.

South Africa, faced with a colossal chase, unsurprisingly lost early wickets and were dismissed for 158 in under 17 overs, with skipper Aiden Markram’s 41 their top score.

An elated Salt told Sky Sports: “That was really good fun. A personal milestone, but the fact we got 300 and won by such a big margin, I can’t have asked for much more.”

Only Zimbabwe, with 344 against the Gambia in October last year, and Nepal, who amassed 314 when playing Mongolia two years ago, have made more at this level.

Jofra Archer took 3-25 in three overs after the England express quick did not feature in the Proteas’ series-opening win in a rain-shortened match in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Salt’s 119, the existing England record at this level, had been at the heart of his country’s previous highest T20 total of 267-3 against the West Indies in Trinidad in December 2023.

The 29-year-old, out for a golden duck in Cardiff, turned the tables in style with a remarkable 60-ball innings featuring 15 fours and eight sixes on his Lancashire home ground.

His fourth T20 hundred — no other England batter has more than one — came off 39 deliveries.

It was also the quickest century in any format by an England batter, surpassing Liam Livingstone’s 42-ball effort in a T20 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in 2021.

England batter to miss T20I series against West Indies

LONDON: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) granted permission for star batter Phil Salt to withdraw from the T20I squad for the upcoming three-match series against the West Indies.

Salt, who is taking time away on paternity leave following the birth of his child earlier this week, will now spend time at home.

He was away from his family due to his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he played for the eventual champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

However, he briefly flew back to England to be with his partner, Abe Salt, for the birth of their first child.

He returned to India in time for the final match against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad, which RCB won, clinching their first-ever IPL trophy after an 18-year wait.

It’s worth noting that Phil Salt was instrumental in RCB’s title victory, having scored 403 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 175.98.

Meanwhile, the ECB named Surrey batter Jamie Smith as Salt’s replacement in the squad for the T20I series against the West Indies, which will start on June 6 in Durham.

The second T20I is scheduled in Bristol on June 8, while the third match will be played on June 10 at Southampton

Phil Salt smashes century to steer England to victory over West Indies

Phil Salt smashed a scintillating century and Barbados-born Jacob Bethell blasted an unbeaten 58 as England romped to an eight-wicket victory over West Indies in their opening T20I at Kensington Oval on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 183 to win, England opener Salt guided the tourists home with 19 balls to spare after a dazzling unbeaten 103 in Bridgetown.

Salt’s third T20 international century came off just 54 balls, including nine fours and six sixes as England cantered to victory, finishing on 183-2 in the 17th over.

Phil Salt set the tone for a dominant England performance in the fourth over, bludgeoning West Indies bowler Shamar Joseph around the ground for 24 runs to take England to 52-0.

The 21-year-old Bethell, who was born and grew up in Barbados before moving to England when he was 12, provided a dazzling half-century, delighting a contingent of friends and family in the stands with a 36-ball knock that included five fours and two sixes.

It’s worth noting that all three of Salt’s T20I centuries have come in games played at Caribbean venues against West Indies. He scored back-to-back tons in last December’s series.

“I enjoy batting here — I’ve grown up on these surfaces,” Salt said. “It’s probably the place I’m happiest.”

Earlier, West Indies had finished their innings on 182-9 thanks to a late burst of scoring from the lower order, with Andre Russell, Romario Shepherd and Gudakesh Motie accounting for 98 runs of the home side’s final total.

Russell smashed four sixes on his way to 30 off 17 balls while Shepherd slashed an unbeaten 35 off 22 deliveries, including three fours and two sixes.

Shepherd received sterling support from Motie, the tailender cutting loose to score 33 off 14 balls before being caught by Dan Mousley off Saqib Mahmood.

Mahmood was the pick of England’s bowlers, taking four wickets for 34 runs off his four overs. Adil Rashid took three for 32 off four overs.

The second match of the five-match series between West Indies and England will be played on Sunday in Bridgetown.

Phil Salt smashes ton as England set up decider with West Indies

Phil Salt smashed a superb 119 from just 57 balls as England beat West Indies by 75 runs to level their T20I series 2-2 and set up a decider on Thursday.

Led by Salt’s aggressive stroke play and swift half-centuries from skipper Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone, England made a team record of 267 for three in their 20 overs at the Brian Lara Academy.

England’s tally was second-highest innings score in a match between full member nations and although West Indies made a fast-scoring start they rapidly lost wickets and ended up bowled out for 192 in 15.3 overs.

Having trailed 2-0 in this series and having lost the ODI series in the Caribbean, England were facing a demoralising end to their tour but now have the chance to secure the series back at the same venue.

Salt had hit an unbeaten ton in England’s victory in Grenada on Saturday and carried on where he left off, taking the attack to the hosts from the outset in emphatic fashion after England were put in.

Phil Salt and skipper Jos Buttler put on 117 in the opening partnership before the captain was removed for 55 when he was caught in the deep by West Indies captain Rovman Powell off Jason Holder.

Will Jacks helped maintain the momentum with 24 from nine balls as part of a rapid 56-run partnership and Liam Livingstone ensured the run-rate never faded with 54 from 21 balls.

Salt was finally bowled by Andre Russell in the penultimate over after striking ten sixes and seven fours in his entertaining innings — the highest score by an Englishman in T20 internationals.

The West Indies reply started badly with Brandon King removed with the first ball of the innings, edging to Reece Topley at short third man off Moeen Ali.

But Nicholas Pooran came in and hammered 20 off the rest of Ali’s opening over as the home side showed they were ready for the daunting chase.

The runs were flowing but Kyle Mayers was caught by Chris Woakes, at the second attempt, after looping a mis-timed drive off Topley high to mid-on.

Shai Hope went for 16 after he top-edged Woakes to the grateful Salt behind the stumps leaving West Indies at 78-4 in just the sixth over.

Andre Russell offered a reminder of his power with five sixes in his 51 off 25 balls but England wrapped up the win when Russell was caught by Harry Brook off Topley.

Phil Salt’s incredible form bodes well for England’s hopes in June’s T20 World Cup, which will be hosted in the Caribbean and the United States, and he said he was relishing playing in the region.

“I’m definitely enjoying it. It’s a cool place to tour,” he said. “The boys have produced the goods in the last couple of games and now we’ve got a decider to look forward to.”

Salt credited his surge in form to a changed approach to the game.

“It’s very satisfying. The tweaks that I’ve made to my game in the last six months from a mental approach point of view… it’s good that I’m seeing the rewards now,” he added.

Skipper Buttler was beaming after what was a feat of big-hitting with 33 sixes in the day.

“A fantastic win,” he said. “You don’t play in too many of those games. It was like being at the Hong Kong Sixes. Really proud of the group, to play with the bravery, the courage and the skill level that we have.”

For his counterpart Powell, there was little to do other than get his team ready for one more clash.

“Credit where credit is due,” he said. “Phil Salt and Jos batted really well up front. These things happen. It’s a very thin line. We’re playing against world-class players. Once you don’t execute properly, they’re going to put you under pressure.

“The boys like a final it seems. We’ll come into Thursday with brand new ideas and plans… The guys will just relax. Sometimes you just need to give them some space. It’s a thinking game, and once guys are clear in their mind, they generally can execute.”

Salt’s 77*, Parnell’s late cameo help Capitals sink Sunrisers in SA20

GQEBERHA: Phil Salt made an unbeaten 77 from 47 balls while Wayner Parnell blasted a quick-fire 27 off 9 to aid Pretoria Capitals (PC) beat Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) by 23 runs in a rain-hit match of the SA20, here on Thursday.

Opener Salt led the batting charge to carry the Capitals to a massive total of 193/6 after they elected to bat first. All-rounder Parnell, however, smacked three gigantic sixes and two fours in a late cameo to finish the proceedings in style.

Sunrisers, in return, managed 170/5 despite fighting knocks by JJ Smuts and Tom Abell, but top-order chaos inflicted by the pacers derailed their chase.

Opener Smuts played a defiant knock of 66 from 51 balls, laced with six fours and four sixes, to bring sanity to Sunriser’s batting order amid Capital’s pace-laden assault, led by  Parnell, Anrich Nortje and James Neesham.

SEC went through a dismal start to their chase when Parnell transferred his batting momentum into bowling and earned a breakthrough on his very first bowl, dismissing Sarel Erwee cheaply on one.

Nortje and Neesham then forced the ousters of Jordan Cox (5 from 11) and skipper Aiden Markram (5 off 8) to reduce the Sunrisers to 34/3 in the 8th over.

A short breathing space in the middle was offered by Tristan Snubbs who made 23 from 11 while gathering 34 runs for the fourth wicket with Smuts but Nortje’s 151 kph-yorker went past Snubb’s bat and shattered the stumps in the 11th over.

Abell and Smuts then crafted a fightback and moved the scoreboard to 133/4 in 16.2 overs before Rashid took his lone yet priceless wicket, dismissing Smuts.

Abell went on to make an unbeaten 40 from 24 balls while James Fuller contributed 12-ball 27 with Sunrisers left well behind the finishing line.

Earlier Capitals also underwent a woeful start when England’s Will Jacks (6 from 4) was removed by Marco Jansen in the very first over of the match. Rilee Rossouw (4 off 3) followed shortly and fell prey to Sisanda Magala in the next overs.

Number four-batter Theunis de Bruyn’s stay also proved short-lived as Ottniel Baartman knocked him down on 19 off 12 as Capital slid to 45/3 after the first 28 balls.

Salt, however, kept playing his strokes despite multiple breaks due to bad weather and reached his fifty from 30 balls.

After two back-to-back jolts by Markram in the 10 over, dismissing Senuran Muthusamy and Shane Dadswell, the batting side was reduced to 80/5 before Neesham stitched an astounding partnership of 77 runs with Salt while scoring 28-ball 37.

The Kiwi all-rounder was caught out at long-on off Baartman’s bowling in the 18th over before Parnell came to sizzle the Capital’s innings.

Salt powers England to chase down 170 in 15th over to level series

LAHORE: England’s opening batter Phil Salt wreaked havoc over the Pakistan bowling line-up as the touring side sealed the sixth T20I with eight wickets and 33 balls to force a series decider, scheduled on Sunday.

Set to chase 170, England comfortably steered to a much-needed victory in just the 15th over, thanks to a quickfire knock of their opening batter Salt, who charged on the host’s bowlers right from the first over.

England’s opening pair of Alex Hales and Salt gave the touring side a flying start as they amassed fifty runs in just three overs.

Following England’s flying start, Pakistan captain Babar Azam then brought Shadab Khan into the attack, who struck in his first over to hand the home side a highly anticipated breakthrough as he removed Hales for 27, who faced just 12 boundaries and smashed four boundaries and a six.

Hales’ dismissal did not bother Salt much as he continued to attack the Pakistan bowling attack and put on another scintillating partnership with Dawid Malan.

The pair continued their domination over Pakistan bowlers and added 73 runs for the second wicket at a rapid pace before Shadab struck again to remove the left-hander. Malan scored 26 off 18 deliveries.

Ben Duckett then joined Salt in the middle and put on a match-winning 42-run partnership to steer the touring side to the victory.

Salt top-scored for the side with a brilliant 88 off just 41 deliveries, laced with 13 boundaries and three sixes, while Duckett remained not-out on 26, facing just 16.

Shadab was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan as he bagged two wickets for 34, while the rest remained clueless in front of the strong English batting line-up.

Batting first on the invitation of England’s captain Moeen Ali, the hosts had an unwanted start to their inning as debutant Mohammad Haris fell cheaply after managing to score a mere seven.

Following the early halt, Shan Masood, too, could not settle things down as David Willey trapped him in legs for a duck and Pakistan, as a result, slipped to 15/2 in the fourth over.

Haider Ali then joined his captain Babar in the middle and attempted to anchor the inning as the pair added an important 47 runs for the third wicket.

Haider, however, miscued one while pulling a shorter delivery off Sam Curran in the ninth over and walked back to the pavilion in disgust after scoring 18.

Iftikhar Ahmed then looked to turn things around with Babar and scored a quickfire cameo as the duo took Pakistan to 110 in the 15th over.

The hard-hitting batter, however, could not continue his brilliance and fell victim to Curran. He scored 31 off just 21 deliveries with the help of two boundaries and as many sixes.

Babar, on the other hand, held his ground firm and kept the scoreboard ticking while the home side lost their explosive batter, Asif Ali, for a mere nine.

Mohammad Nawaz played a crucial knock of 12 not-out and supported Babar in the death overs. Pakistan captain led from the front and top-scored for the side with a magnificent 87 off 59 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and three sixes.

For England, Curran and Willey bagged two wickets each, while Richard Gleeson and Reece Topley struck out a batter each.

Roy, Salt shine as England blunt Netherlands in a rain-hit second ODI

AMSTELVEEN: Openers Jason Roy and Phil Salt led the charge for England to take their side to a comfortable victory by six wickets against the Netherlands in the rain-hit second ODI, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, here on Sunday.

Set to chase 236 runs, England batters completely dominated the opposition in a match reduced to 41 overs-per-side as wet outfield delayed the start by nearly three hours.

After scoring the highest ODI total in the previous game, the energetic England side came out on the crease with a similar force, bringing up 100 runs in the 15th over.

Roy, who fell cheaply in the last game, joined the party this time as he glittered with a powerful 73 runs knock, laced with 13 fours and a six. Whereas, Salt blasted 77 off 54 including 9 boundaries.

England skipper Eoin Morgan, continued with his dismal form when he was dismissed on a duck for the second time in the series. Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone failed to impress this time as he was bowled out by Tim Pringle cheaply.

The left-handed duo of Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali, however, crushed the Dutch bowlers again after a hiccup in middle and took their side home with the blistering knocks of 36 and 42, respectively.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Dutch side set a total of 235 with skipper Scott Edwards leading the way for his team with a brilliant 78 off 73 deliveries.

Teja Nidamanuru joined Edwards to raise a firm fifth-wicket partnership of 73 runs when the hosts were suffering at 97/4. Logan van Beek put up a steady knock after David Willey bowled out Nidamauru and also got rid of Edwards through run out. Shane Snater played a cameo of unbeaten 17 off 10 balls.

England now have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against the hosts while the dead rubber match will be played on Wednesday.
