Red-hot Mendis powers Peshawar Zalmi past Karachi Kings

LAHORE: Kusal Mendis continued his rich vein of form as Peshawar Zalmi eased past Karachi Kings in Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11 clash at Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

Unbeaten Zalmi chased down a stiff target of 183 inside 18 overs, losing only three wickets in the process.

The opening pair of James Vince and Babar Azam added 37  in the first five overs before both batters were sent back in successive overs.

Babar was caught after scoring 25 from 19, whereas Vince was caught behind on 16.  The wickets brought Aaron Hardie and Kusal Mendis on the crease. The pair tried to arrest the slide with a brief 22-run partnership. However, Hardie fell prey to Khusdil Shah, putting Karachi Kings in pole position.

At this stage, the scorecard read 67-3 in 7.4 overs with Farhan Yousaf joining Mendis. The pair launched a recovery and took their side out of trouble. Both batters batted briskly, soaking up all the pressure.

Mendis and Yousaf took the game away from Karachi Kings in the last five overs, taking the attack to the bowlers. The pair finished with an unbeaten 119-run partnership from 69 balls, propelling Zalmi to their eighth win on the trot.

Mendis — the leading run scorer of the tournament- struck four sixes and five fours in his 80* off 43 balls. Yousaf, on the other hand, scored his maiden half-century, hitting three sixes and five fours. He made 58 off 36 deliveries.

For Karachi Kings, Abbas Afridi, Khushdil Shah and Hasan Ali picked up one wicket each.

Earlier, Peshawar Zalmi seamer Ali Raza produced a sensational hat-trick to derail Karachi Kings after an aggressive half-century by Jason Roy.

Batting first after winning the toss, Karachi Kings had a mixed outing despite a strong start from opener Jason Roy, who anchored the innings with a fluent 85 off 51 deliveries, striking 11 fours and two sixes.

Captain David Warner struggled at the top, managing just 11 off 13 balls before being bowled by Raza early in the innings.

Roy, however, kept the scoreboard moving and built short partnerships of 36 and 27 with Salman Ali Agha and Reeza Hendricks, respectively, maintaining Karachi’s momentum through the middle overs.

The real turning point came when Azam Khan joined Roy and counterattacked brilliantly. The Karachi Kings duo added 63 runs in just 32 deliveries, putting Peshawar Zalmi under pressure before Iftikhar Ahmed broke the stand by dismissing Azam for a quickfire 35 off 19 balls.

Roy soon followed, falling to Mohammad Basit after completing a well-compiled knock that had kept Karachi in control for most of the innings.

From there, the innings collapsed dramatically as no batter managed to offer resistance. Karachi Kings managed to score 182-9 in their 20 overs.

Ali Raza returned in death overs to tear through the lower order, taking his first PSL hat-trick and finishing with four wickets in total. He was supported by Mohammad Basit, Iftikhar Ahmed, Sufiyan Muqeem, and Aaron Hardie, who claimed one wicket each.

Jason Roy to ‘never walk away from England’

LONDON: Jason Roy and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have profusely refuted the reports of the hard-hitting opener leaving the England team for the lucrative offers to play in the Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States of America.

Taking to Twitter, Jason Roy shared his statement to address the long-going speculations about him leaving and expressed his hope to continue playing for England for “many more years”, while also sharing that the ECB has allowed him to play in MLC after “clear and supportive conversations”.

“Following a bit of unwanted speculation over the last 24 hours, I wanted to clarify that I am not and never will ‘walk away from England’,” said Roy in a tweet.

“Representing my country continuous to be my proudest moment as a professional cricketer. I hope to play for England for many more years, that remains my priority.

“I have had clear and supportive conversations with the ECB about participating in Major League Cricket. The ECB were happy with me to play in the competition as long as they did not have to pay me for the remainder of the contractual year.

“As a single format player with no central contract I wanted to take the opportunity to play this competition as there are currently no scheduling conflicts with England. It benefits me as an England player to play as much competitive cricket as possible.

“Just to be very clear my priority is England cricket especially with a World Cup soon upon us. It is for me and for any player, the greatest honour to receive a cab to play for their country.”

Meanwhile, the ECB echoed Jason Roy’s statement and said: “England men’s white-ball batter Jason Roy has informed the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) that he wishes to take up an agreement with Major League Cricket in the USA later this summer. The ECB have agreed for him to play in the competition on the proviso that he gives up the remainder of his ECB incremental contract, which both parties have agreed to.

“The ECB wish to clarify that this decision will not affect Jason’s selection for England teams going forward. We have absolute confidence and faith that Jason is committed to England cricket.”

The inaugural edition of the MLC is scheduled to run from July 13-30 at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas and involves a small clash with the English summer – the T20 Blast semi-finals and finals and two rounds of County Championship contests between Finals Day and the start of the Hundred on August 1.

However, there were reported concerns in the English board that MLC will likely expand in the future and compete directly with The Hundred.

Consequently, the ECB, earlier, was not willing to issue No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to allow contracted players to participate in MLC. While players on full white-ball contracts are unlikely to negotiate a release to play in the United States.

Jason Roy eyes to terminate ECB central contract to play in US

England white-ball players including Jason Roy are contemplating the possibility of terminating contract extensions with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to accept lucrative offers to play in the inaugural season of Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States.

English players, on full central contracts, are unlikely to participate in the MLC this year, although Jason Roy, who has an incremental contract with the ECB, intends to terminate his contract in order to play in the cash-rich league.

Jason Roy’s Surrey and England team-mate Reece Topley might also opt for the same move, though his choice may be influenced by his fitness following shoulder surgery last month.

The inaugural edition of the MLC is scheduled to run from July 13-30 at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas and has considerable support from both India and Australia.

Four of the six franchises are owned by the investors, who own Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, with Cricket Victoria and Cricket New South Wales holding shares in the other two.

The inaugural season of the US league involves a small clash with the English summer – the T20 Blast semi-finals and finals and two rounds of County Championship contests between Finals Day and the start of the Hundred on August 1.

However, there are concerns in the English board that MLC will likely expand in the future and compete directly with The Hundred.

Consequently, the ECB will not issue No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to allow contracted players to participate in MLC. While players on full white-ball contracts are unlikely to negotiate a release to play in the United States.

‘My best T20 innings ever’ says Roy on incredible knock against Zalmi

RAWALPINDI: Quetta Gladiators’ opener Jason Roy has dubbed his heroic knock against Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League League season 8 the ‘best T20 inning’ of his life.

On Wednesday, Quetta Gladiators pulled off the highest-ever run chase in the PSL history, thanks to a majestic batting show held by Roy, who scored 63-ball 145 to help his team chase a mammoth 241.

“In T20 cricket it is one of my favourite-ever innings,” said Roy in a post-match press conference.

“Because I was there till the end. A lot of times in limited overs where I am batting as an opener I get out after 100. But tonight I was there at the end which is an incredible feeling for an opener” he explained.

He elaborated that such high-scoring matches were great additions to the PSL and the T20 cricket as they would attract many more kids to the game.

“I remember as a kid watching these sorts of matches really drew me to the game,” he remarked.

Revealing what was going through his mind when Zalmi posted 240 on board, Roy claimed there was not any sort of pressure on him or his opening partner, Martin Guptill when they were walking out of the dressing room to chase the massive target.

“We walked out very relaxed. We didn’t feel any pressure on our shoulders” said Roy who went on to score his second century in the PSL – the only overseas player to do so.

Talking about the atmosphere in the ground while he was smashing every other ball out of the park, Roy said, “on that wicket, with that crowd, it was electrifying. Had a really good time”

“Anytime you are chasing a target over 200, no matter what the pitch is, it is still an incredible feeling” he added.

“It is my best T20 inning ever. Surely it will live a long time in my memory” he reiterated.

English batter, however, also praised Babar Azam and Saim Ayub for the way they set the tone of the game, adding it was a special feeling for him to watch the star Pakistan batter playing one his best T20 innings.

“It’s the sort of stuff I used to watch on TV lots of times and to watch it first hand it was extremely special,” he maintained.

“He’s (Babar) a beautiful player to watch and helped extremely from the other end with his opening partner.”

Records galore as Roy-led Gladiators down Zalmi in high-scoring contest

RAWALPINDI: Numerous records bite the dust as Quetta Gladiators downed Peshawar Zalmi in the must-win Pakistan Super League (PSL) season eight clash on Wednesday.

After struggling with the bat in the initial fixtures, Gladiators’ hard-hitting opener Jason Roy announced his comeback in style as the right-handed batter powered his side to pull off a miraculous victory over Zalmi with a marathon 145-run knock in the run chase.

With his scintillating match-winning knock, Roy registered the highest-ever individual score in PSL history, trumping Karachi Kings’ Colin Ingram’s 127 not out against Gladiators in 2019.

Roy also became the first overseas player in PSL to score two centuries in the league’s history. His century was also the second-fastest in the league’s history.

English opener’s astonishing knock powered Gladiators to pull off the highest-ever run chase in PSL history, breaking the previous record of Multan Sultans, who successfully chased down 209 against Lahore Qalandars in the previous edition.

The historic pursuit was also the second-highest successful chase in domestic T20s and the fourth-highest in all T20s.

The Gladiators also bettered the third-highest total of PSL history by scoring 243/2 which Zalmi put up in the first innings as they finished at 240/2.

Meanwhile, despite being a forgetful night for him as a captain, Babar Azam unlocked a long-awaited achievement for himself as the star batter struck his maiden century in the extravaganza.

With his magnificent knock, Babar scored his eighth century in T20s and is only behind T20 great Chris Gayle, who scored 22 tons in his iconic career.

Roy’s ton propels England to complete clean sweep over Netherlands

AMSTELVEEN: England’s explosive opener Jason Roy scored a blistering century to help the touring side chase down the 245-run target in the 30.1 overs and complete the clean sweep over the Netherlands.

Set to chase 245, England excelled to the victory by eight wickets and 119 balls to spare at the back of Roy’s unbeaten century.

The touring side were off to a flying start as the opening pair of Roy and Phil Salt was scoring at a rapid pace; allowing the side to amass 80 runs in just the 10th over.

Salt, on the other hand, who was eyeing his half-century, fell one short of it as Paul van Meekeren castled the former, who scored 49 off 30 balls, laced with nine boundaries.

The touring side, lost another wicket in the 10th over as Dawid Malan bagged a two-ball duck and as a result, slipped to 85/2 in 10 overs.

Roy then joined hands with the interim captain Joe Buttler and put on an unbeaten 163-run partnership to steer the side to the victory in the 31st over.

Roy top-scored for the side with his century and remained not-out on 101 off just 86 deliveries, laced with 15 boundaries. Buttler, on the other hand, remained unbeaten with his blistering half-century knock of 86 off just 64 balls with the help of seven boundaries and five sixes.

For the Netherlands, van Meekeren was the only bowler to find success and made two scalps, which came in the same over.

Batting first, the English bowlers completely dominated the Dutch batting line-up; bowling them out for 244 in the 50th over.

Max O’Dowd, Bas de Leede, and Scott Edwards led the way with half-centuries but were a touch too slow as their knocks could not bolster the home side to a defendable total.

The rest of the batters had no answers to the strong English bowling attack and fell after scoring cheaply. Tom Cooper was the other batter, who made a significant contribution as he scored 33.

For England, David Willey led the way with four wickets, while Brydon Carse picked two. David Payne, Liam Livingstone, and Adil Rashid made one scalp each.

Following their clean sweep victory over the Netherlands in the series, England have replaced Bangladesh from the top of the ICC ODI World Cup Super League.

Roy, Salt shine as England blunt Netherlands in a rain-hit second ODI

AMSTELVEEN: Openers Jason Roy and Phil Salt led the charge for England to take their side to a comfortable victory by six wickets against the Netherlands in the rain-hit second ODI, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, here on Sunday.

Set to chase 236 runs, England batters completely dominated the opposition in a match reduced to 41 overs-per-side as wet outfield delayed the start by nearly three hours.

After scoring the highest ODI total in the previous game, the energetic England side came out on the crease with a similar force, bringing up 100 runs in the 15th over.

Roy, who fell cheaply in the last game, joined the party this time as he glittered with a powerful 73 runs knock, laced with 13 fours and a six. Whereas, Salt blasted 77 off 54 including 9 boundaries.

England skipper Eoin Morgan, continued with his dismal form when he was dismissed on a duck for the second time in the series. Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone failed to impress this time as he was bowled out by Tim Pringle cheaply.

The left-handed duo of Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali, however, crushed the Dutch bowlers again after a hiccup in middle and took their side home with the blistering knocks of 36 and 42, respectively.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Dutch side set a total of 235 with skipper Scott Edwards leading the way for his team with a brilliant 78 off 73 deliveries.

Teja Nidamanuru joined Edwards to raise a firm fifth-wicket partnership of 73 runs when the hosts were suffering at 97/4. Logan van Beek put up a steady knock after David Willey bowled out Nidamauru and also got rid of Edwards through run out. Shane Snater played a cameo of unbeaten 17 off 10 balls.

England now have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against the hosts while the dead rubber match will be played on Wednesday.
