Plooy, Phangiso star as Super Kings beat Capitals in SA20 thriller

JOHANNESBURG: Leus du Plooy played a sensational knock of 75 off 40 before Aaron Phangiso stormed the batting line to help Joburg Super Kings clinch a close win over Pretoria Capitals in the SA20, here on Tuesday.

Plooy led the batting charge along with Reeza Hendricks, who made 45 from 50 to steer Super Kings to a competitive total of 168/6 after they were put to bat.

Capitals, in return, were held by the sharp turn of Phangiso, who claimed four wickets for 32 runs and help his side restrict the opponent seven runs short of the target.

Plooy and Hendricks anchored the Super Kings’ batting with a valiant 73-run partnership for the second wicket after skipper Faf du Plessis fell prey to Anrich Nortje on 27 off 16. The two sailed their side to 118 before Nortje grabbed the breakthrough in the 16th over, dismissing Hendricks.

Following Hendrick’s dismissal, Plooy took the charge and brisked the run rate without any effective support from the other end as Eathan Bosch (3-12) and Wayne Parnell (1-39) hunted down the next four batters in quick succession.

During his unbeaten 75, Plooy smashed seven fours and five sixes.

Capitals, however, faced the first jolt in the fourth over when Alzarri Joseph struck two back-to-back wickets, removing Will Jack (16 off 13), and Rilee Rossouw on a golden duck.

While Phil Salt thrashed 29 from 15 balls, the middle order also chipped in with humble contributions by Theunis de Bruyn (18), Shane Dadswell (22) and James Neesham (24) before they all fell prey to Phangiso.

With the equation coming down to seven required runs from two balls, Romario Shepherd struck two in two balls to bundle out Capitals for 162.

Markram’s all-round brilliance propel Eastern Cape to sink Cape Town

GQEBERHA: Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s skipper Aiden Markram led from the front and powered his side to a four-wicket triumph over MI Cape Town in the ninth match of the ongoing SA20 here.

Set to chase 163, the Sunrisers amassed the total with just three balls to spare courtesy of a vital eight-run knock by James Fuller at the death after Markram and Sarel Erwee laid the foundation for the run chase.

The Sunrisers had a frustrating start to their pursuit as the side lost openers Adam Rossington and JJ Smuts for a mere nine runs in the third over.

Skipper Markram, however, then stood up for his team and put on an anchoring third-wicket partnership with Erwee as they raised 92 runs at a decent pace.

The duo looked to have made it an easy affair for their side before Rashid Khan provided a much-needed breakthrough to MI Cape Town in the form of Erwee who perished after scoring 41 off 45 balls, hitting three boundaries and two sixes.

MI Cape Town bowlers made a strong comeback into the game in the next over when Odean Smith removed Markram and Jordan Cox (1) when the side still needed 52 runs.

Markram top-scored for his side with 50 off 35 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries.

Following the slump, Tristan Stubbs led the Sunrisers’ run chase with a responsible 30-run knock and also put on a match-winning partnership with Jansen (16) before Fuller completed the pursuit with two back-to-back boundaries in the final over.

Smith led the bowling attack for MI Cape Town with 3/23 while Sam Curran bagged 2/37. Rashid, however, made one scalp.

Put into bat first, MI Cape Town could only amass 158/8 in 20 overs despite a quickfire 63-run knock by George Linde as the rest of the batters failed against Sunrisers’ bowlers.

Linde top-scored for his side with 63 off just 28 balls and hit four fours and five sixes.

Besides him, only Rassie van der Dussen remained the notable run-getter with his 22-ball 29.

Ottniel Baartman was the pick of the bowlers for the Sunrisers as he returned with 3/45 while Markram claimed 2/8. Sisanda Magala and Jansen picked two and a wicket respectively.

DURBAN: Skipper Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen hit powerful fifties to aid Durban Super Giant outpower Paarl Royals by 27 runs in a high-scoring game of the SA20, here on Sunday.

Captain De Kock made 57 from 31 balls while Klassen blasted a sizzling 29-ball 50, smashing half-a-dozen sixes and a four to take Super Giants to a massive 216-run total in the first innings.

David Miller’s Royals, in an even response, managed 189/8, thanks to the courageous fightback from Eoin Morgan and Dan Vilas, who scored 64 off 37 and 44 off 30, respectively.

Opting to bat first, Super Giants hoisted a solid start as Kyle Mayers and Wiaan Mulder collectively smashed 62 inside the first six overs. Mayers fell prey to Evan Jones after scoring 39 from 23 while Mulder went on to build another astounding partnership of 85 runs from 49 balls with skipper de Kock.

Looking solid on 147 for the loss of just one wicket in 13.5 overs, Super Giants lost both Mulder and de Kock within the next five balls to slide to 151/3 before Klaasen displayed his prowess with the bat.

The visiting side, however, went through a dismal start to their chase as England’s World winning captain Jos Buttler was dismissed cheaply (2 from 7 balls) by his compatriot Reece Topley in the third over.

Another Englishmen Jason Roy, on the other hand, managed 33 from 23 balls amid solid bowling attack from Super Giants.

Super Giants broke the middle order with back-to-back wickets as Dwaine Pretorius struck down Wihan Lubbe (18  off 11) and captain David Miller (1 off 3) in the seventh over before Prenelan Subrayen cleaned up Roy in the next over.

Following this debacle, Morgan and Vilas gathered 114 runs from 61 balls to keep the Royals in the hunt before the former England captain was run out in the 18th over.

Topley then cast further jolts on the Royals’ batting line in the 19th over as he hunted down Vilas before removing Evan Jones on a golden duck.

Bowlers lead charge as MI Cape town thrash Super Kings to go on top

CAPE TOWN: Bowlers led the way for MI Cape Town, who sealed a comprehensive win by seven wickets over Joburg Super Kings in the SA20, here on Saturday.

George Linde and Kagiso Rabada ran through the top order before Rashid Khan and Odean Smith joined the party to reduce Super Kings to 106/9 in the 20 overs after they were put to bat.

The home side, however, sailed through the target in 16.2 overs with opener Dewald Brevis scoring 42 from 34 balls.

Faf du Plessis’s side underwent an awful start when spinner Linde struck back-to-back wickets in the 5th over, dismissing Janneman Malan and Kyle Verreynne, to plunge the visitors to 31/3 after Rabada earned the first breakthrough in the 3rd over, cleaning up Reeza Hendrick on 2.

With spinners dominating the game right from the start, introducing Rashid Khan (2-14) gave a further jolt to the Super Kings as none of their batters could make a solid standing on the crease.

While seven of JSK’s batters failed to cross the double figures, Leus du Plooy scored the most run in the first innings with a jittery knock of 21 off 26.

Rabada was named Player of the match for his sensational bowling figures of 2/14 while Linde, Rashid and Odean Smith also bagged two wickets each. Waqar Salamkheil, meanwhile, had a scalp to his credit.

With the win, Cape Town surged to the top, one point clear of second-placed Pretoria Capitals.

Jacks goes berserk as Pretoria Capitals thrash Sunrisers Eastern Cape

CENTURION: Pretoria Capitals’ opener Will Jacks struck a quickfire 92 off 46 deliveries to lay a solid foundation for a big total before bowlers steer the side to a dominating 37-run victory over Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the sixth SA20 fixture.

Put into bat first, Pretoria Capitals piled on a mammoth 216/6 in their allotted 20 overs at the back of a brisk 92-run knock of their opener Jacks.

The Capitals had an unwanted start to their innings as they lost their opener Phil Salt cheaply, who could score a mere one before falling in the second over.

Jacks then anchored the innings with a valiant 34-run partnership with Rilee Rossouw but could not stretch the stand as the latter fell after scoring 20 off 15; resulting in the Capitals slipping to 47/2 in the fifth over.

Following two dismissals, Jacks spiced up the game with belligerent hitting with Theunis de Bruyn supporting equally.

The duo batted for nine overs together and added 111 runs at an astounding pace before Bruyn perished just eight short of his well-deserved half-century.

The right-handed batter scored 42 off a mere 23 deliveries, hitting two fours and four sixes.

Following Bruyn’s dismissal, Jacks could not extend his stay at the crease and fell eight short of what could have been a magnificent century.

The right-handed batter, however, top-scored for his side with a 46-ball 92 and smashed seven boundaries and eight sixes.

Following his departure, the Capitals’ batters James Neesham (18), Shane Dadswell (20*) and Migael Pretorious (11*) made important contributions to power their side to a massive total.

Sisanda Magala and Ottniel Baartman took two wickets each, while Brydon Carse and Marco Jansen struck out a batter each.

Set to chase 217, Sunrisers Eastern Cape could accumulate 179/7 in 20 Overs as none of their batters could match Jacks’ brilliance.

The side had a deplorable start to the run chase as they lost two wickets for just 15 runs in the second over and then kept losing wickets at regular intervals which halted their expedition.

Skipper Aiden Markram pushed for the run chase with his brisk 46 off 29 deliveries but it was not enough.

Besides him, only Jansen (36) and JJ Smut (28) remained the notable run-getters while the rest of the batters remained clueless against the Capitals’ bowling attack.

Parnell led the Capitals’ bowling attack with 2/20 while Adil bagged 2/46. Neesham, Anrich Nortje and Eathan Bosch picked up a wicket apiece.

Mayers stars as Durban Super Giants sink MI Cape Town

CAPE TOWN: Durban Super Giants’ Kyle Mayers displayed all-round brilliance to power his side to a dominating five-wicket victory over hosts MI Cape Town in the fifth fixture of the ongoing SA20.

Super Giants’ bowlers displayed a collective effort to halt MI Cape Town for a below-par 152/8 in the allotted 20 overs despite a valiant half-century from Grant Roelofsen.

Put into bat first, the hosts had a dismal show with the bat as they lost wickets at regular intervals and were 45/4 by seven overs before Roelofsen anchored the innings with a cautious knock.

The right-handed batter top-scored for his side with a 44-ball 52, hit four fours and a six.

Besides him, only George Linde exerted some resilience with his quick 33-run knock while the remaining batters seemed clueless against the strong Super Giants’ bowling attack.

Salt’s 77*, Parnell’s late cameo help Capitals sink Sunrisers in SA20

GQEBERHA: Phil Salt made an unbeaten 77 from 47 balls while Wayner Parnell blasted a quick-fire 27 off 9 to aid Pretoria Capitals (PC) beat Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) by 23 runs in a rain-hit match of the SA20, here on Thursday.

Opener Salt led the batting charge to carry the Capitals to a massive total of 193/6 after they elected to bat first. All-rounder Parnell, however, smacked three gigantic sixes and two fours in a late cameo to finish the proceedings in style.

Sunrisers, in return, managed 170/5 despite fighting knocks by JJ Smuts and Tom Abell, but top-order chaos inflicted by the pacers derailed their chase.

Opener Smuts played a defiant knock of 66 from 51 balls, laced with six fours and four sixes, to bring sanity to Sunriser’s batting order amid Capital’s pace-laden assault, led by  Parnell, Anrich Nortje and James Neesham.

SEC went through a dismal start to their chase when Parnell transferred his batting momentum into bowling and earned a breakthrough on his very first bowl, dismissing Sarel Erwee cheaply on one.

Nortje and Neesham then forced the ousters of Jordan Cox (5 from 11) and skipper Aiden Markram (5 off 8) to reduce the Sunrisers to 34/3 in the 8th over.

A short breathing space in the middle was offered by Tristan Snubbs who made 23 from 11 while gathering 34 runs for the fourth wicket with Smuts but Nortje’s 151 kph-yorker went past Snubb’s bat and shattered the stumps in the 11th over.

Abell and Smuts then crafted a fightback and moved the scoreboard to 133/4 in 16.2 overs before Rashid took his lone yet priceless wicket, dismissing Smuts.

Abell went on to make an unbeaten 40 from 24 balls while James Fuller contributed 12-ball 27 with Sunrisers left well behind the finishing line.

Earlier Capitals also underwent a woeful start when England’s Will Jacks (6 from 4) was removed by Marco Jansen in the very first over of the match. Rilee Rossouw (4 off 3) followed shortly and fell prey to Sisanda Magala in the next overs.

Number four-batter Theunis de Bruyn’s stay also proved short-lived as Ottniel Baartman knocked him down on 19 off 12 as Capital slid to 45/3 after the first 28 balls.

Salt, however, kept playing his strokes despite multiple breaks due to bad weather and reached his fifty from 30 balls.

After two back-to-back jolts by Markram in the 10 over, dismissing Senuran Muthusamy and Shane Dadswell, the batting side was reduced to 80/5 before Neesham stitched an astounding partnership of 77 runs with Salt while scoring 28-ball 37.

The Kiwi all-rounder was caught out at long-on off Baartman’s bowling in the 18th over before Parnell came to sizzle the Capital’s innings.

Ferreira’s blast gives Super Kings winning start in SA20

DURBAN: Donovan Ferreira smashed an unbeaten 82 from 40 balls to help Joburg Super Kings seal the opening-game win in the SA20 as they beat Durban Super Giants by 16 runs on Wednesday.

Faf du Plessis’s Super Kings showcased great batting muscle after they elected to bat, posting a mammoth 191-run target. The home side, in return, managed 174/5 despite skipper Quinton de Kock’s blistering 78 from 52 balls.

Following their first win, Super Kings went second in the table below MI Cape Town, who thrashed Paarl Royals by eight wickets in the inaugural match on Tuesday to grab a bonus point in addition to four win points.

The visiting side underwent an unwanted start as openers Reeza Hedrick and Janneman Malan fell cheaply, sliding Super Kings to 8/2 in 2.5 overs. But, a valiant fightback from the skipper du Plessis and late fireworks from Ferreira and Romario Shepherd steered the side to 191/6 in 20 overs.

The captain made 39 from 33 balls before he was dismissed by Akila Dananjaya in the 14th over. Shepherd and Ferreira, then gathered an astounding 87-run partnership for the sixth wicket, taking their team from 99/5 to 186/5 before the last two balls of the final over.

Jason Holder castled Shepherd on the penultimate delivery for 40 off 19 balls before George Garton smashed a boundary on the final ball.

Super Giants, however, hoisted a solid start to their chase, scoring 98 without loss before West Indies’ Kyle Myers was stumped out off Aaron Phangiso (1-37) in the 12th over.

De Kock continued for a short while but a horrendous misjudgment off Feirara’s bowling found the tow edge of the bat and went straight to the bowler.

With set batters leaving the crease, Super Giants lost control of the control as they managed only 48 runs in the last six overs while losing three more wickets.

Ferreira was adjudged player of the match for his batting might and an impactful wicket of the Super Giants skipper that derailed the chase.

‘No runs if a batter gets bowled on free-hit’ SA20 brings new rules

CAPE TOWN: In an astonishing move to revolutionize T20 cricket, there will be no run off a “free-hit” delivery if that ball hits the batter’s wicket in South Africa’s nascent T20 league, SA20, starting today.

On the eve of the inaugural SA20, tournament organizers introduced a host of novel rules to the playing conditions in order to improve the quality of the competition.

According to these new alterations, no runs will be allowed if a free-hit delivery hits the batter’s stumps, which is in clear contrast to the International Cricket Council’s rules, which allow players to run even if a player gets bowled out on a free-hit delivery, through the runs will be accounted as byes.

A controversy sparked over runs allowed to India despite Virat Kohli being bowled out on a free-hit delivery in the nerve-wracking game against Pakistan in the last year’s T20 World Cup.

The incident happened on the fourth delivery of the final over. Kohli smashed a huge six off Mohammad Nawaz when India needed 13 runs off three deliveries. Umpires called it an above-waist height no-ball on the batsman’s insistence

The next ball was adjudged wide so the free hit continued. However, the next delivery hit the stumps and ran towards the boundary line through the third-man region with Kohli and Dinesh Karthik running three runs. Pakistan captain Babar Azam had a discussion with the umpire on whether the runs should be awarded to the Indian team, who went on to win the thriller by four wickets.

However, the SA20 organizers, now believed that the advantage in such a situation should be given to the fielding team.

Another unique change introduced by the SA20 is the selection of the playing XI after the toss is conducted – for the first time in any major T20 tournament. Captains will nominate 13 names before the toss and after the coin flip, 11 players will be finalized and the two left-out players will become substitute fielders.

Moreover, there will be no overthrow runs if the ball deflects off the stumps while attempting for an intentional run-out.

Furthermore, a bonus point will be offered besides the standard four points for a win, if a team can win with a run rate that is 1.25 times their opponents.

The six-team SA20 competition will kick off on January 10 with MI Cape Town locking horns with Paarl Royals in the opening match.
