Sam Curran frustrated over missing out on Test recall despite Ben Stokes’ injury

England all-rounder Sam Curran has expressed his frustration over not getting a recall to the Test team despite captain Ben Stokes’ injury.

Stokes suffered a hamstring injury while playing for the Northern Superchargers during The Hundred 2024 back in August.

He tore his left hamstring which kept him away from cricket for the rest of the summer season, including the home Test series against Sri Lanka.

Curran, who last played red-ball cricket for England in August 2021, recently shared that he was expecting a call-up to the Test team after Stokes’ injury.

“I’ll be totally honest when Stokesy [Ben Stokes] got injured, I did probably think that was my way back into the Test team,” Sam Curran said while talking to talkSPORT.

“A couple of weeks back, I had a meeting with Keysy [Rob Key, director of cricket] just to get a bit of understanding of where the group is, and how I see myself getting back into the Test side.”

The 26-year-old all-rounder revealed that he was disappointed over missing out on a place in the Test squad.

“Being a young player who experienced Test cricket so young, I feel like I had the advantage to know what it’s about, to know what winning a Test match is, and the grind and the grit and attitude that you need … so I was a little bit gutted,” he stated.

“Selection is selection, but I thought that was my way back into the side at the minute.”

Sam Curran has featured in 24 Tests for England from 2018 to 2021, taking 47 wickets and scoring 815 runs.

Adil Rashid, Sam Curran recognized in the King’s Birthday Honours

England cricketers Lydia Greenway, Adil Rashid and Sam Curran are among the names recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Greenway, a two-time World Cup winner and four-time Ashes winner who played over 200 times for her country, receives an OBE. Since retiring from playing, the former Kent left-hander has also founded Cricket For Girls.

Adil Rashid, also a two-time World Cup winner, is awarded an MBE, while Sam Curran – Player of the Tournament in England Men’s victorious ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign – receives an MBE.

There is also a British Empire Medal for former Northamptonshire CCC scorer Tony Kingston, who retired last year after 32 years of service at the club – a time period across which he missed just 66 overs of cricket.

Lydia Greenway said: “It’s an amazing honour to receive, and I was really surprised to receive it. It’s just a really nice thing to experience. I’ve always tried to enjoy my cricket and share my enjoyment of the game with other people, and I’m very proud to be recognised in this way.”

Adil Rashid said: “It’s nice to get the news and receive recognition for my work in cricket and in the community. I’m proud of the thing I’ve achieved on the field, including two World Cups, but I’ve always wanted to achieve things off the field in my local area. It’s all linked. I am so grateful for the things I have and I know some people don’t have as much as me, so I try to give what I can.”

Sam Curran said: “I was overwhelmed and delighted to be given an MBE. You see people getting these titles but you don’t expect it to be you. It’s an incredibly proud moment, not just for myself but for those who have helped me over the years.”

ECB Chair Richard Thompson said: “I would like to congratulate Lydia, Adil, Sam and Tony on behalf of cricket fans across England and Wales.

“They have all dedicated themselves to cricket, and in the cases of Lydia, Adil and Sam, represented our country with distinction on the biggest stage of them all.

“They have all given back to the community, and are tremendous role-models for anyone wishing to pursue a career in our game.”

Sam Curran fined for ‘excessive celebration’ of Bavuma dismissal

KIMBERLEY: England all-rounder Sam Curran has been fined 15 percent of his match fee and handed a demerit point for “excessively celebrating” his dismissal of South African captain Temba Bavuma in the second one-day international on Sunday.

The penalty was announced by the International Cricket Council on Tuesday.

The teams meet in the third and final match of the World Cup Super League series in Kimberley on Wednesday.

Bavuma made 109 as South Africa took a decisive 2-0 series lead in Bloemfontein before scooping a ball from Curran into his stumps.

Curran ran down the pitch and got close to Bavuma as he celebrated the wicket.

Match referee Jeff Crowe of New Zealand fined Curran following a report by the umpires. Curran admitted the offence and there was no need for a formal hearing.

According to the ICC, Curran was found to have committed a level one offence of the ICC code of conduct when he “excessively celebrated towards and in close proximity to the dismissed batter, being an action which had the potential to provoke an aggressive reaction from Bavuma”.

If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within a 24-month period he faces a ban. It was Curran’s first offence within the time period.
