Sri Lanka crush Bangladesh in second Test to seal series

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka completed a thumping innings and 78-run victory over Bangladesh before lunch on day four of the second Test on Saturday, wrapping up the two-match series 1-0.

Resuming the day on a precarious 115-6, the visitors still trailed by 97 runs and needed a minor miracle to avoid an innings defeat. Any hopes of a rearguard were dashed almost immediately.

Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, under the pump after a wicketless outing in the first innings, struck gold with the fifth ball of the morning as Litton Das edged behind to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis for 14.

With that scalp, the last recognised batter was back in the hut and Bangladesh’s house of cards came tumbling down soon after, all out for 133.

It was a clinical all-round performance by hosts Sri Lanka, who walked away with crucial World Test Championship (WTC) points.

None of the visiting batters managed to cross fifty in the match –- a far cry from the first Test in Galle, which ended in a draw when captain Najmul Hossain Shanto hit twin centuries.

Bangladesh had won the toss on a docile Colombo pitch but squandered the advantage, bundled out for 247.

Sri Lanka replied in commanding fashion, piling on 458 to take a hefty 211-run lead.

The foundation was laid by a masterclass from opener Pathum Nissanka, who crafted a fluent 158 –- his second successive century in the series — while Dinesh Chandimal chipped in with a polished 93.

The pair added 194 runs for the second wicket, putting the game firmly in Sri Lanka’s control.

Bangladesh threatened briefly when the second new ball brought them three quick wickets, but Kusal steadied the ship with a counterattacking 84, ensuring Sri Lanka didn’t let the momentum slip.

Nissanka, who was declared man of the match, said he was “very pleased with the effort”.

“It feels good to contribute. I am now the senior opener with Dimuth Karunaratne retired and I try to do my best for the team,” he said.

Bangladesh captain Shanto called it a “very disappointing game”.

“We played really well in Galle but we were not up to the mark here,” he said.

“The way we batted in the first innings is when things went wrong for us. A total of 247 was not good on this pitch.

“No harm with the decision to bat first. But the way we got out was very disappointing. One good thing was the way our bowlers kept fighting.”

Sri Lanka rule Bangladesh with 531, but Mendis misses rare feat

Bangladesh were 55-1 in their first innings at stumps on the second day of the second Test after bowling Sri Lanka out for 531 in Chittagong on Sunday.

Opener Zakir Hasan was unbeaten on 28 alongside nightwatchman Taijul Islam on 0 after Lahiru Kumara bowled Mahmudul Hasan Joy for 21.

Sri Lanka made a record 531 runs in their first innings, which was the highest score in Test cricket without any batsman scoring a century.

Meanwhile, Kamindu Mendis narrowly missed the feat of a third Test century in consecutive innings.

The left-handed batter remained not out on 92 as last man Asitha Fernando was run out for a duck, leaving him eight short of what would have made him only the fourth Sri Lankan to score three centuries in consecutive innings.

Mendis, who scored 102 and 164 in the first Test, struck Taijul Islam for two sixes in an over to come close to the feat.

But Fernando fell short of his crease in a desperate attempt to change the strike.

Apart from Mendis, who was playing only his third Test, Dhananjaya de Silva (70), Dinesh Chandimal (59), Kusal Mendis (93), Dimuth Karunaratne (86) and Nishan Madhushka (57) also scored a fifty each.

Shakib Al Hasan finished with 3-110 as Sri Lanka made Bangladesh toil for nearly two days after electing to bat first. Sri Lanka resumed the second day with 314-4.

De Silva, like Mendis, who also scored 102 and 108 in the first Test, raised the prospect of scoring 300 on the trot before he was dismissed in the post-lunch session.

Chandimal was the only batsman to be dismissed in the first session, edging Shakib behind the stumps after making 59 runs.

Khaled Ahmed trapped De Silva leg before in the first over after the lunch break.

Khaled could have taken another wicket in his next if Prabath Jayasuriya was not comically dropped by three slip fielders on six.

Mendis was declared caught behind on 35 off Mehidy Hasan Miraz, but the decision was reversed after review.

Shakib hit Jayasuriya plumb in front to end his 65-run seventh wicket stand with Mendis, who was dropped by Hasan Mahmud on 60 at deep square leg.

Angelo Mathews becomes the first batter to get ‘timed out’ in international cricket

Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews was on Monday given “timed out” in an ICC World Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh, becoming the first man to suffer the dismissal in the history of international cricket.

Angelo Mathews, who joined the Sri Lankan squad late as a replacement for injured pace bowler Matheesha Pathirana, came down to bat in the 25th over at the fall of Sadeera Samarawickrama’s wicket and scoreboard reading 135-4.

The former captain took more than two minutes to take strike after having issues with his helmet due to a broken strap. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a “timed out” dismissal, which was upheld by the on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth.

The ICC World Cup 2023 playing conditions pertaining to “timed out” dismissals reads thus:

40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.

Sri Lanka edge Bangladesh to register first Super 4s win in Asia Cup 2023

COLOMBO: Sadeera Samarawickrama’s blistering 93-run knock, followed by a combined bowling effort led Sri Lanka to a 21-run victory over Bangladesh in the eighth match of the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023 on Saturday.

Set to chase 258, Bangladesh could accumulate 236 runs before being bundled out in the penultimate over despite Towhid Hridoys’s gutsy 82.

Bangladesh openers Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Naim laid a solid foundation for the run chase with a brisk 55-run partnership but Dasun Shanaka struck twice in his successive overs to script Sri Lanka’s comeback as Bangladesh slipped to 60/2.

Miraz scored a 29-ball 28 while Naim played a cautious 21-run knock in 46 deliveries.

Bangladesh then coped two more blows to their run chase after experienced batter Litton Das (15) and skipper Shakib Al Hasan (3) perished cheaply.

With the visitors reeling at 83/4 in 18.5 overs, Hridoy put together an anchoring 72-run partnership with wicketkeeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim.

The pair had stabilized Bangladesh’s innings before Dasun Shanaka once again drew an important breakthrough, dismissing Mushfiqur in the 38th over. He scored 29 off 48 balls.

Hridoy then stitched brief partnerships with Shamim Hossain and Nasum Ahmed before finally perishing in the 44th over when Bangladesh needed a further 61 runs.

Towhid Hridoy remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh in their must-win Asia Cup 2023 fixture with a 97-ball 82 which featured seven boundaries and a six.

Following his dismissal, Nasum and Hasan Mahmud kept Bangladesh in the hunt by scoring valuable runs at the backend but their heroics were not enough to guide their side to glory.

Nasum scored a run-a-ball 15 while Mahmud scored 10 not out off seven deliveries.

For Sri Lanka, Dasun Shanaka, Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana bagged three wickets each while Dunith Wellalage made one scalp.

The 21-run victory over Bangladesh not only marked Sri Lanka’s first win in the Super 4s stage of the Asia Cup 2023 but also extended their unbeaten streak in the ODIs.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, are now on the verge of elimination and would need a miracle to make it to the final.

Put into bat first, Sri Lanka managed to put a commendable total on the board, courtesy of Sadeera Samarawickrama’s late fireworks and Kusal Mendis’s anchoring half-century.

The home side had a shaky start to their innings as they lost their opener Dimuth Karunaratne (18) cheaply with 34 runs on the board in 5.3 overs.

Mendis then joined opening batter Pathum Nissanka in the middle and the pair anchored the innings with a sensible 74-run partnership which lasted with Nissanka’s dismissal in the 24th over.

Nissanka fell 10 runs short of his half-century, scoring 40 off 50 deliveries and hit five boundaries.

Mendis also followed Nissanka back to the hut two overs later as Sri Lanka slipped to 117/3 in 26 overs.

Sri Lanka then lost two more wickets in quick successions as Charith Asalanka (10) and Dhananjaya de Silva (six) walked back after making modest contributions.

With the home side reeling at 164/5 in the 38th over, Sadeera Samarawickrama was joined by his captain Dasun Shanaka and the pair scripted an astounding recovery by knitting a crucial 60-run partnership.

The duo frustrated Bangladesh bowlers in their must-win Asia Cup 2023 game by scoring at a rapid pace before young pacer Hasan Mahmud provided a much-needed breakthrough in the form of Shanaka’s dismissal.

The Sri Lankan captain scored a cautious 32-ball 24, which featured a boundary.

Following his dismissal, Samarawickrama stood his ground firm and ticked the scoreboard single-handedly while losing partners at the other end before finally perishing on the final delivery of the innings, seven short of his well-deserved century.

Sadeera Samarawickrama smashed eight boundaries and two sixes on his way to top score for Sri Lanka with a 72-ball 93.

Right-arm pacers Hasan Mahmud and Taskin Ahmed led the bowling attack for Bangladesh in their must-win Asia Cup 2023 fixture with three wickets each, followed by Shoriful Islam’s two.

Sri Lanka edge Bangladesh to script winning start to Asia Cup defence

KANDY: Mathee, followed by Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka’s half-centuries powered Sri Lanka to beat Bangladesh by five wickets in the second match of the Asia Cup 2023.

Set to chase a modest 165, Sri Lanka chased down the total in 39 overs for the loss of five wickets to taste their maiden victory in the recently-commenced Asia Cup 2023.

The holders had a contrasting start to the pursuit as they were three down for a mere 43 runs in 9.2 overs.

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka then anchored the run chase with a sensible fourth-wicket partnership to put Sri Lanka on the brink of victory.

Sri Lanka were in complete control before Mahedi Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan caused a stir with back-to-back strikes.

Mahedi got Samarawickrama stumped on 54 while Shakib castled Dhananjaya de Silva (2) in the next over.

Asalanka, however, stood his ground firm, and with a brief 37-run partnership with skipper Dasun Shanaka (15) steered his side to glory in 39 overs.

Asalanka top-scored for Sri Lanka with a 92-ball 62, which featured five boundaries and a six.

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh’s batting unit failed to put on a decent total on the board despite Shanto’s gutsy half-century.

The visitors got off to a dismal start to their innings as they lost three wickets inside 11 overs with just 36 runs on the board as Mohammad Naim (16), Tanzid Hassan (0) and skipper Shakib Al Hasan (5) perished cheaply.

Following the slump, Shanto was joined by Towhid Hridoy at the crease and the pair anchored the proceedings with a cautious 59-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The duo of Shanto and Hridoy appeared to have settled down before Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka drew a much-needed breakthrough for his side in the 24th over when he trapped Hridoy lbw on 20.

Shanto was then involved in another crucial partnership for Bangladesh in their Asia Cup 2023 campaign opener when he put together a 32-run stand with experienced Mushfiqur Rahim.

The duo, however, failed to stretch their stand as Rahim fell victim to Pathirana in the 33rd over and could score a cautious 13 off 22 deliveries.

Following Rahim’s dismissal, Shanto began to lose partners at the other end at an alarming rate before he too, finally headed back to the pavilion after Maheesh Theekshana castled him in the 42nd over.

He waged a lone battle for Bangladesh in their first match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 with a 122-ball 89 which featured seven boundaries.

Besides him, only Naim, Hridoy and Rahim managed to make it to the double figures.

Matheesha Pathirana led the bowling attack for Sri Lanka with 4/32 in seven overs, followed by Theekshana taking two wickets while Dhananjaya de Silva, Dunith Wellalage and Shanaka made one scalp each.

Harshitha, Nilakshi sail Sri Lanka to consecutive win in Women’s T20 WC

CAPE TOWN: Harshitha Samarawickrama and Nilakshi de Silva led the batting charge for Sri Lanka as the side sealed their second consecutive win of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup after a comfortable seven-wicket win over Bangladesh on Sunday.

Set to chase a meagre total of 126, opener Harshitha played a valiant knock of unbeaten 69 while Nilakshi succoured from the other end with 38-ball 41 to take Sri Lanka home with 10 balls to spare.

Bangladesh, however, slumped to 125 for the loss of eight wickets as they lacked firepower in the lower order which could have taken them to a respectable total after they reached 95/4 in 15 overs.

Sobhana Mostary and skipper Nigar Sultana made 29 and 28 respectively to keep Bangladesh afloat in the middle overs before their batting choked.

Spinners led the way for Sri Lanka as skipper Chamari Athapaththu took three wickets while Oshadi Ranasinghe had three for 23 in her four overs.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, wobbled a bit in their chase when spinner Marufa Akter demolished the top order and reduced the side to 25 for three inside six overs. She picked three and was the only Bangladesh bowler to etch her name in the wickets section.

Prottasha stars as Bangladesh edge Sri Lanka in U19 Women’s T20 WC

BENONI: Bangladesh batter Afia Prottasha and Shorna Akter struck half-centuries to aid their side to thrash Sri Lanka by 10 runs in the ongoing ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

Put into bat first, Bangladesh piled a commendable 165/2 in their quota of 20 overs at the back of brilliant half-centuries from Prottasha and Shorna.

Bangladesh openers Prottasha and Misty Shaha gave them a solid start with a 75-run opening stand with the former leading the charge.

Sri Lanka finally found a moment to cherish in the 12th over when Rashmi Nethranjali castled Prottasha before Shaha got run out in the same over as Bangladesh slipped to 79/2.

Prottasha remained the top-scorer for her side with 53 off 43 balls, hitting five boundaries and a six, while Shaha could score 14 off 24.

Following the slump, wicketkeeper-batter Dilara Akter and Shorna charged on the Sri Lankan bowlers and added an unbeaten 86-run stand in just 51 balls, propelling Bangladesh to a decent total.

Shorna was the core aggressor of the match-defining partnership as she remained unbeaten with her quickfire 50 off just 28 deliveries including three fours and two sixes, while Dilara struck 36 off 27 deliveries.

Nethranjali remained the only Sri Lankan bowler to find a breakthrough as she returned with figures of 1/30, while the rest went wicketless.

Set to chase 166, Sri Lanka fell 10 runs short despite the fifties from captain Vishmi Gunaratne and Dewmi Vihanga.

Earlier, the side had a dismal start to their run chase as they lost both their openers Nethmi Senarathna and Sumudu Nisansala cheaply; causing the side to slip at 24/2 in the fourth over.

Following the slump, Sri Lankan skipper Gunaratne and Vihanga anchored the run chase as they raised 96 runs for the third wicket but remained too slow.

The mounting run rate left the duo with no choice but to slog hard at almost every ball which resulted in Vihanga falling briefly after her half-century. She scored 55 off 44 balls and smashed nine boundaries including two sixes.

Following her departure, none of the batters could contribute significantly in the run chase and Sri Lanka, consequently, fell 10 runs short with Gunaratne unbeaten on 60.

She top-scored for her side with 60 off 54 balls with the help of eight boundaries and a six but was unable to steer her side to glory.

Marufa Akter led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with 2/19 while Disha Biswas struck out a batter.

Meanwhile, in another Group B clash, Australia thrash the United States of America (USA) by nine wickets and 68 balls to spare.

Putting the USA into bat, Australian bowlers ran through the USA batting lineup and bundled them for a paltry 64 in the 16th over.

Snigdha Paul offered a brief fightback with her cautious 17 after opening batter Laasya Mullapudi’s 10, while the rest of the batters could not amass double-figures.

Maggie Clark took two wickets for just 14, while Amy Smith, Lucy Hamilton and Ella Hayward made one scalp each.

Set to chase a paltry 65, Australia eased through by losing just one wicket in pursuit and amassed the total in just the ninth over.

Opening batter Kate Pelle top-scored with 30* off 26, while Moore scored 22 off 17.

Sri Lanka sink Bangladesh in high-scoring thriller to qualify for Super 4s

DUBAI: Sri Lanka’s wicket-keeper batter Kusal Mendis led the way with a magnificent half-century while captain Dasun Shanaka scored an important 45 to propel their side to beat Bangladesh by two wickets and qualified for the Super Fours of Asia Cup 2022.

Set to chase a mammoth 184, Sri Lanka steered to the victory in the final over with two wickets to spare, thanks to the fifty from Mendis and an anchoring knock from their captain Shanaka.

Sri Lankan openers Mendis and Pathum Nissanka provided a solid start to the run chase as they began to pile up runs at a quick rate. Nissanka, however, who was struggling to get going, fell victim to the debutant Ebadot Hossain in the sixth over after scoring 20 off 19.

Charith Asalanka’s stay at the crease remained brief as he also departed for a paltry score of one in the same over while attempting to slog the ball.

The hosts then lost two more wickets in quick succession and were soon reduced to 77/4 in the ninth over.

Following the slump, Mendis and Shanaka scripted an astounding recovery as the pair put on an important 54-run partnership for the fifth wicket and made sure to score according to the mounting required run rate before Mendis perished in the 15th over.

The right-handed batter top-scored for the side with a brilliant 60 off 37 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and three sixes.

Shanaka, on the other hand, held his ground firm and anchored the run chase with a valiant knock of 45 off just 33 balls with the help of three boundaries and two sixes.

The high-scoring thriller took a sharp twist in the 18th over when Shanaka fell to Mahedi Hasan while attempting to muscle the ball over the long-on fence.

Sri Lanka’s batting tail – Chamika Karunaratne and Asitha Fernando, however, denied the twist and Bangladesh’s comeback in the game as the two batters batted sensibly at the death and clinched the victory out of Bangladesh’s grasp.

Karunaratne scored an important 16 off just 10 deliveries before being run out in the 19th over, while Fernando remained unbeaten with his 10 and steered Sri Lanka over the line and into the Super Fours.

For Sri Lanka, Ebadot led the way with three wickets, while Taskin Ahmed claimed two. Mustafizur Rahman and Mahedi, on the other hand, struck out a batter each.

Sri Lanka, after winning the toss, invited Bangladesh to bat first. The decision, however, did not seem to go in the hosts’ favour as their opponents piled up a massive 183/7 in the allotted 20 overs.

Batting first, Bangladesh were off to a dismal start as they lost their first wicket in the third over at a combined score of mere 19 with Sabbir Rahman walking back to the pavilion in disgust after managing to score only five.

Opening batter Mehidy Hasan Miraz and skipper Shakib Al Hasan then anchored the inning with an important 39-run partnership for the second wicket.

The partnership was majorly dominated by the opener, who scored at a quick pace for his 38. He faced 28 deliveries and smashed four boundaries including two sixes to give his side a solid start.

Shakib, on the other hand, held his ground firm with an anchoring knock while wicket-keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim fell cheaply for a mere four in the next over and Bangladesh, as a result, slipped to 63/3 in eight overs.

Following the slump, middle-order batter Afif Hossain then took on the Sri Lankan bowlers and raced up the proceedings with his blistering knock and remained unaffected by Shakib’s dismissal in the 11th over, who scored a snail-paced 24 off 22 deliveries.

Afif, however, top-scored for Bangladesh with a quickfire 39 off just 27 balls with the help of four boundaries and two sixes.

A late onslaught from all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain then bolstered Bangladesh to breach the 180-run mark as the side finished at 183/7 in 20 overs. He scored a quickfire 24 off just nine balls including four boundaries.

For Sri Lanka, Chamika Karunaratne and Wanindu Hasaranga bagged two wickets each, while Asitha Fernando, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dilshan Madushanka struck out a batter apiece.
