Tanzid Hasan, Rishad Hossain power Bangladesh to series win against Sri Lanka

CHATTOGRAM: Rishad Hossain played an attacking innings of 48 after substitute Tanzid Hasan Tamim hit 84 off 81 balls Monday, steering Bangladesh to a four-wicket win and a 2-1 ODI series victory over Sri Lanka.

Set a modest target after Janith Liyanage’s unbeaten 101 guided Sri Lanka to 235 all out in 50 overs, Bangladesh raced to 237-6 in 40.2 overs. Rishad remained unbeaten on 48 off just 18 balls.

The hosts were in danger when Wanindu Hasaranga forced Mehdiy Hasan Miraz, the last recognised batsman, to give a catch to Pramod Madushan for 25, with Bangladesh still 58 runs away from victory.

But Rishad dispatched the first ball he faced over midwicket for six and did not look back.

He hit four sixes and five fours in his whirlwind innings before Mushfiqur Rahim, 37 not out, finished the game with a boundary off Maheesh Theekshana.

Tanzid led the initial charge, replacing Soumya Sarkar in the second innings as a concussion sub, despite Lahiru Kumara wreaking havoc with 4-48.

Liyanage earlier staged a lone battle en route to his maiden century after Bangladesh made regular strikes, with Taskin Ahmed leading the way for the home side with 3-42.

Skipper Kusal Mendis (29) and Charith Asalanka (37) made a good start but lost their wickets before they could build bigger innings.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first, only to lose both openers inside four overs.

Taskin struck early, trapping in-form opener Pathum Nissanka leg-before for one, then dismissing the other opener Avishka Fernando for four in his next over.

Mustafizur Rahman, playing his first match in the series, removed Sadeera Samarawickrama off his first ball for 14 to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 41-3.

Leg-spinner Rishad made Mendis his first ODI wicket, also off his first ball of the game.

Mustafizur ended Asalanka’s counter-attacking innings before Mehidy claimed two back-to-back wickets to expose the tail.

But Liyanage held one end firm to ensure Sri Lanka batted out 50 overs, hitting Taskin over the cover for a four in the final over to reach his century off 101 balls.

Mustafizur and Mehidy claimed 2-39 and 2-38, respectively.

Bangladesh won the opener by six wickets, with Sri Lanka taking the second by three wickets on Friday.

The two teams will now play a two-match Test series, beginning on Friday in Sylhet.

Bangladesh knock Sri Lanka out of ICC World Cup 2023

DELHI: Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan scored half-centuries after a combined bowling effort to power Bangladesh to a sensational three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the 38th match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Bangladesh’s three-wicket victory marked the end of Sri Lanka’s semi-final hopes.

Set to chase 280, Bangladesh scored 282 for the loss of seven wickets and 53 balls to spare, thanks to a massive 169-run partnership between Shanto and Shakib.

Earlier, Bangladesh openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das failed to give a steady start to the pursuit as they both perished within seven overs with just 41 runs on the board.

Shakib Al Hasan then joined Najmul Hossain Shanto at the crease and the pair launched an astounding recovery with both scoring half-centuries.

The duo appeared to have settled down and were looking in control before Angelo Mathews removed both set batters in quick succession to cause a stir in the run chase.

Shakib scored a brisk 82 in 65 deliveries, laced with 12 boundaries and two sixes while Shanto smashed 12 boundaries on his way to a 101-ball 90 and top-scored for the side.

Mahmudullah (22) and Mushfiqur Rahim (10) then stitched a brief 38-run partnership for the fifth wicket before both perished in quick succession while Mehidy Hasan Miraz (3) also followed their footsteps.

Bangladesh, as a result, slipped to 269/7 in the 41st over and still needed 11 runs.

Towhid Hridoy, however, held his nerves calm and steered his side over the line with an unbeaten 15 off seven deliveries while Tanzim Hasan Shakib aided him with five not out.

Dilshan Madushanka led the bowling attack for Sri Lanka with three wickets while Angelo Mathews and Maheesh Theekshana bagged two each.

Bangladesh drew first blood after opting to bowl, as Sri Lanka lost Kusal Perera on the last ball of their first over with only five runs on the board.

Sri Lanka’s skipper Kusal Mendis then joined Pathum Nissanka and together they knitted a 61-run partnership, dominated by the latter before Bangladesh struck in back-to-back overs to leave the Islanders reeling at 72-3.

Mendis was dismissed by his Bangladeshi counterpart Shakib Al Hasan after his cautious 30-ball 19, while, Nissanka was castled by Tanzim Hasan Sakib in the next over.

Nissanka played a quick knock of 41 runs from 36 balls with the help of eight boundaries.

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka then added 63 runs for the fourth wicket before the former was out while attempting to hit Shakib Al Hasan out of the park after scoring 41 off 42.

With Sri Lanka stranded at 135-4, former captain Angelo Mathews came out to bat, however, he found himself in an unfortunate situation as he became the first batter to be given ‘timed-out’ in international cricket.

Charith Asalanka took charge and attacked Bangladesh bowlers, getting reasonable support from Dhananjaya de Silva (34) and Maheesh Theekshana (22).

De Silva added 78 runs with Asalanka during their sixth-wicket stand while Theekshana helped add 45 runs.

Asalanka completed his second ODI century in the 48th over before getting out in the next over. His gusty 108, featured six boundaries and five sixes.

Bangladesh bowlers picked up the final two wickets for a mere run, with Tanzim Hasan Sakib topping the bowling charts with three wickets.

Sri Lanka edge Bangladesh to script winning start to Asia Cup defence

KANDY: Mathee, followed by Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka’s half-centuries powered Sri Lanka to beat Bangladesh by five wickets in the second match of the Asia Cup 2023.

Set to chase a modest 165, Sri Lanka chased down the total in 39 overs for the loss of five wickets to taste their maiden victory in the recently-commenced Asia Cup 2023.

The holders had a contrasting start to the pursuit as they were three down for a mere 43 runs in 9.2 overs.

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka then anchored the run chase with a sensible fourth-wicket partnership to put Sri Lanka on the brink of victory.

Sri Lanka were in complete control before Mahedi Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan caused a stir with back-to-back strikes.

Mahedi got Samarawickrama stumped on 54 while Shakib castled Dhananjaya de Silva (2) in the next over.

Asalanka, however, stood his ground firm, and with a brief 37-run partnership with skipper Dasun Shanaka (15) steered his side to glory in 39 overs.

Asalanka top-scored for Sri Lanka with a 92-ball 62, which featured five boundaries and a six.

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh’s batting unit failed to put on a decent total on the board despite Shanto’s gutsy half-century.

The visitors got off to a dismal start to their innings as they lost three wickets inside 11 overs with just 36 runs on the board as Mohammad Naim (16), Tanzid Hassan (0) and skipper Shakib Al Hasan (5) perished cheaply.

Following the slump, Shanto was joined by Towhid Hridoy at the crease and the pair anchored the proceedings with a cautious 59-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The duo of Shanto and Hridoy appeared to have settled down before Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka drew a much-needed breakthrough for his side in the 24th over when he trapped Hridoy lbw on 20.

Shanto was then involved in another crucial partnership for Bangladesh in their Asia Cup 2023 campaign opener when he put together a 32-run stand with experienced Mushfiqur Rahim.

The duo, however, failed to stretch their stand as Rahim fell victim to Pathirana in the 33rd over and could score a cautious 13 off 22 deliveries.

Following Rahim’s dismissal, Shanto began to lose partners at the other end at an alarming rate before he too, finally headed back to the pavilion after Maheesh Theekshana castled him in the 42nd over.

He waged a lone battle for Bangladesh in their first match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 with a 122-ball 89 which featured seven boundaries.

Besides him, only Naim, Hridoy and Rahim managed to make it to the double figures.

Matheesha Pathirana led the bowling attack for Sri Lanka with 4/32 in seven overs, followed by Theekshana taking two wickets while Dhananjaya de Silva, Dunith Wellalage and Shanaka made one scalp each.

Prottasha stars as Bangladesh edge Sri Lanka in U19 Women’s T20 WC

BENONI: Bangladesh batter Afia Prottasha and Shorna Akter struck half-centuries to aid their side to thrash Sri Lanka by 10 runs in the ongoing ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

Put into bat first, Bangladesh piled a commendable 165/2 in their quota of 20 overs at the back of brilliant half-centuries from Prottasha and Shorna.

Bangladesh openers Prottasha and Misty Shaha gave them a solid start with a 75-run opening stand with the former leading the charge.

Sri Lanka finally found a moment to cherish in the 12th over when Rashmi Nethranjali castled Prottasha before Shaha got run out in the same over as Bangladesh slipped to 79/2.

Prottasha remained the top-scorer for her side with 53 off 43 balls, hitting five boundaries and a six, while Shaha could score 14 off 24.

Following the slump, wicketkeeper-batter Dilara Akter and Shorna charged on the Sri Lankan bowlers and added an unbeaten 86-run stand in just 51 balls, propelling Bangladesh to a decent total.

Shorna was the core aggressor of the match-defining partnership as she remained unbeaten with her quickfire 50 off just 28 deliveries including three fours and two sixes, while Dilara struck 36 off 27 deliveries.

Nethranjali remained the only Sri Lankan bowler to find a breakthrough as she returned with figures of 1/30, while the rest went wicketless.

Set to chase 166, Sri Lanka fell 10 runs short despite the fifties from captain Vishmi Gunaratne and Dewmi Vihanga.

Earlier, the side had a dismal start to their run chase as they lost both their openers Nethmi Senarathna and Sumudu Nisansala cheaply; causing the side to slip at 24/2 in the fourth over.

Following the slump, Sri Lankan skipper Gunaratne and Vihanga anchored the run chase as they raised 96 runs for the third wicket but remained too slow.

The mounting run rate left the duo with no choice but to slog hard at almost every ball which resulted in Vihanga falling briefly after her half-century. She scored 55 off 44 balls and smashed nine boundaries including two sixes.

Following her departure, none of the batters could contribute significantly in the run chase and Sri Lanka, consequently, fell 10 runs short with Gunaratne unbeaten on 60.

She top-scored for her side with 60 off 54 balls with the help of eight boundaries and a six but was unable to steer her side to glory.

Marufa Akter led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with 2/19 while Disha Biswas struck out a batter.

Meanwhile, in another Group B clash, Australia thrash the United States of America (USA) by nine wickets and 68 balls to spare.

Putting the USA into bat, Australian bowlers ran through the USA batting lineup and bundled them for a paltry 64 in the 16th over.

Snigdha Paul offered a brief fightback with her cautious 17 after opening batter Laasya Mullapudi’s 10, while the rest of the batters could not amass double-figures.

Maggie Clark took two wickets for just 14, while Amy Smith, Lucy Hamilton and Ella Hayward made one scalp each.

Set to chase a paltry 65, Australia eased through by losing just one wicket in pursuit and amassed the total in just the ninth over.

Opening batter Kate Pelle top-scored with 30* off 26, while Moore scored 22 off 17.

Emotional Bangladesh need more head than heart, says skipper Shakib

DUBAI: Skipper Shakib Al Hasan warned Bangladesh that they must keep their emotions in check after rivals Sri Lanka dumped them out of the Asia Cup cricket following a bitter war of words.

Sri Lanka won a do-or-die match in Dubai by two wickets and with four balls to spare on Thursday to move into the Super Four stage of the tournament, a prelude to the T20 World Cup.

Before the clash the two sides exchanged verbal volleys in media conferences with Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka saying Bangladesh lacked a world-class bowler other than Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib.

Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud hit back, saying: “I don’t see any (world-class) bowler in Sri Lanka as well… we have at least two.”

The battle of words moved to social media with former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene tweeting: “Looks like it’s time for (our) bowlers to show the class and batters to show who they are on the field.”

Shakib denied after the defeat that ended their Asia Cup hopes that the off-field chatter had affected them, but admitted his Bangladesh team needed to play more with their heads.

“We are very emotional. That is the other area we need to improve,” Shakib said, with the World Cup in Australia on the horizon in October-November.

“Keep our emotions on the side and play the way we need to play. More looking to give our head in the game than our heart in the game.”

Sri Lanka batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa offered an olive branch to the Bangladesh players and said Shanaka’s words were misconstrued.

“The statement that the captain made, I don’t think he meant any wrong,” Rajapaksa told reporters.

“Of course, when you compare the (dangerous) Afghanistan bowlers, what we meant was we had a slight advantage facing the Bangladeshi bowlers.”

Rajapaksa added: “Like India-Pakistan, Sri Lanka-Bangladesh is also a good rivalry, but we are friends off the field.

“Some words could hurt the players and hurt the staff. But what the captain meant was not what went through the media.”

After a tempestuous build-up, Bangladesh posted 183-7, a total their bowlers failed to defend.

The Sri Lankan lower-order needed to get 25 runs from the final two overs and gained from the extra runs which came through wides and no-balls by the opposition bowlers.

Both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh lost their opening matches to Afghanistan, who sailed into the Super Four from the group.

Rajapaksa said his team went into hiding after their eight-wicket hammering to Afghanistan — the team they face once more in the next round on Saturday.

“It was quite shameful for us, the 11 who played this game, and we were not expecting to be bowled out for 105,” said Rajapaksa.

“Of course, Afghanistan is a pretty decent side when it comes to T20s but after the loss we went into a small shell for a couple of days, but we knew how to overcome that situation.”

The hard-hitting left-hander said Sri Lanka are relishing having another crack at Afghanistan, who have emerged as genuine title contenders.

“What we planned was to beat Bangladesh by hook or by crook,” he said.

“We managed to win and the motivation that the players have is immense, so going forward into Super Fours it will be quite interesting.”

Sri Lanka sink Bangladesh in high-scoring thriller to qualify for Super 4s

DUBAI: Sri Lanka’s wicket-keeper batter Kusal Mendis led the way with a magnificent half-century while captain Dasun Shanaka scored an important 45 to propel their side to beat Bangladesh by two wickets and qualified for the Super Fours of Asia Cup 2022.

Set to chase a mammoth 184, Sri Lanka steered to the victory in the final over with two wickets to spare, thanks to the fifty from Mendis and an anchoring knock from their captain Shanaka.

Sri Lankan openers Mendis and Pathum Nissanka provided a solid start to the run chase as they began to pile up runs at a quick rate. Nissanka, however, who was struggling to get going, fell victim to the debutant Ebadot Hossain in the sixth over after scoring 20 off 19.

Charith Asalanka’s stay at the crease remained brief as he also departed for a paltry score of one in the same over while attempting to slog the ball.

The hosts then lost two more wickets in quick succession and were soon reduced to 77/4 in the ninth over.

Following the slump, Mendis and Shanaka scripted an astounding recovery as the pair put on an important 54-run partnership for the fifth wicket and made sure to score according to the mounting required run rate before Mendis perished in the 15th over.

The right-handed batter top-scored for the side with a brilliant 60 off 37 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and three sixes.

Shanaka, on the other hand, held his ground firm and anchored the run chase with a valiant knock of 45 off just 33 balls with the help of three boundaries and two sixes.

The high-scoring thriller took a sharp twist in the 18th over when Shanaka fell to Mahedi Hasan while attempting to muscle the ball over the long-on fence.

Sri Lanka’s batting tail – Chamika Karunaratne and Asitha Fernando, however, denied the twist and Bangladesh’s comeback in the game as the two batters batted sensibly at the death and clinched the victory out of Bangladesh’s grasp.

Karunaratne scored an important 16 off just 10 deliveries before being run out in the 19th over, while Fernando remained unbeaten with his 10 and steered Sri Lanka over the line and into the Super Fours.

For Sri Lanka, Ebadot led the way with three wickets, while Taskin Ahmed claimed two. Mustafizur Rahman and Mahedi, on the other hand, struck out a batter each.

Sri Lanka, after winning the toss, invited Bangladesh to bat first. The decision, however, did not seem to go in the hosts’ favour as their opponents piled up a massive 183/7 in the allotted 20 overs.

Batting first, Bangladesh were off to a dismal start as they lost their first wicket in the third over at a combined score of mere 19 with Sabbir Rahman walking back to the pavilion in disgust after managing to score only five.

Opening batter Mehidy Hasan Miraz and skipper Shakib Al Hasan then anchored the inning with an important 39-run partnership for the second wicket.

The partnership was majorly dominated by the opener, who scored at a quick pace for his 38. He faced 28 deliveries and smashed four boundaries including two sixes to give his side a solid start.

Shakib, on the other hand, held his ground firm with an anchoring knock while wicket-keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim fell cheaply for a mere four in the next over and Bangladesh, as a result, slipped to 63/3 in eight overs.

Following the slump, middle-order batter Afif Hossain then took on the Sri Lankan bowlers and raced up the proceedings with his blistering knock and remained unaffected by Shakib’s dismissal in the 11th over, who scored a snail-paced 24 off 22 deliveries.

Afif, however, top-scored for Bangladesh with a quickfire 39 off just 27 balls with the help of four boundaries and two sixes.

A late onslaught from all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain then bolstered Bangladesh to breach the 180-run mark as the side finished at 183/7 in 20 overs. He scored a quickfire 24 off just nine balls including four boundaries.

For Sri Lanka, Chamika Karunaratne and Wanindu Hasaranga bagged two wickets each, while Asitha Fernando, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dilshan Madushanka struck out a batter apiece.
