Sri Lanka thump Ireland in T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up

LAUDERHILL: Dasun Shanaka bamboozled Ireland’s batting unit with a four-fer and propelled Sri Lanka to a comfortable 41-run victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up match here on Friday.

Put into bat first, Sri Lanka registered a formidable total of 163/8 in the allotted 20 overs, courtesy of Angelo Mathews’ unbeaten 32 run-knock.

The seasoned all-rounder batted sensibly at the backend after coming out to bat at No.7 and added valuable runs for Sri Lanka.

Mathews was the top-scorer for Sri Lanka, followed by skipper Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva (26), Dasun Shanaka (23) and opener Pathum Nissanka (22).

Josh Little and Barry McCarthy led the bowling attack for Ireland with two wickets each while Ben White, Curtis Campher, Craig Young and Mark Adair made one scalp apiece.

In response, Ireland’s batting unit unfolded on a measly 122 before being bundled out in the penultimate over.

Campher topped the scoring for Ireland with a run-a-ball 26 while skipper Paul Stirling (21) was the other notable run-getter as the rest of their batters faltered against the Shanaka-led Sri Lankan bowling attack.

Shanaka returned astonishing figures of 4/23 in 3.2 overs while Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana bagged two wickets each.

Meanwhile, in another ICC T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up clash, Afghanistan outclassed Scotland by 55 runs.

Batting first, Afghanistan posted 178/8 in the allotted overs at the back of Gulbadin Naib and Azmatullah Omarzai.

Naib top-scored for Afghanistan with a blistering 69 off 30 deliveries, laced up with five fours and six sixes while Omarzai made a 36-ball 48, hitting six boundaries including two sixes.

In response, Scotland could only manage 123/9 in 20 overs despite Mark Watt’s gutsy knock.

Watt waged a lone battle for Scotland with a 25-ball 34 down the order while experienced opener George Munsey (28) contributed significantly.

Sri Lanka crush Ireland’s CWC Qualifier hopes as Scotland, Oman through

HARARE: Dominant Sri Lanka crushed Ireland’s hopes of making it to the Super Sixes of the CWC Qualifier by handing a thumping 133-run defeat and paved the way for Scotland and Oman to progress.

In the 15th match of the CWC Qualifier, tournament favourites Sri Lanka registered a dominating 133-run triumph over Ireland at the back of a brilliant century by Dimuth Karunaratne and a five-for by Wanindu Hasaranga.

Put into bat first, the Sri Lanka piled up a massive total of 325 in 50 overs with Karunaratne and Sadeera Samarawickrama leading the batting charge.

Having lost Pathum Nissanka (20) and Kusal Mendis (0) on two successive deliveries, Sri Lanka slipped to 48/2 in the ninth over.

Following back-to-back blows, the pair of Karunaratne and Samarawickrama anchored the innings with an astounding 168-run partnership for the third wicket.

The pair appeared to have settled down and both were eyeing centuries until Gareth Delany got rid of Samarawickrama, who fell just 18 short of his century.

He struck four boundaries on his way to an 86-ball 82.

Karunaratne followed Samarawickrama’s footsteps as he also walked back in the span of two overs after top scoring for Sri Lanka.

He smashed eight boundaries on his way to a run-a-ball 103.

Brisk and valuable knocks by Charith Asalanka (38) and Dhananjaya de Silva (42) afterward made sure Sri Lanka amassed the 300-run mark.

Mark Adair was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland as he returned brilliant figures of 4/46 followed by Barry McCarthy’s 3/56 and Gareth Delany’s 2/52.

Set to chase a mammoth 326, the Irish batting lineup faltered and could only accumulate 192 before being bowled out in 31 overs.

In-form Harry Tector (33) and Curtis Campher (39) offered brief retaliation against spin-backed Sri Lankan bowling attack while the rest seemed clueless.

Wanindu Hasaranga claimed his second consecutive five-wicket haul and played a pivotal role in his team’s triumph while Maheesh Theekshana made two scalps.

Meanwhile, in another CWC Qualifier fixture, Scotland outclassed Oman by 76 runs after both sides qualified for the Super Sixes, courtesy of Sri Lanka’s victory.

Batting first, Scotland raised 320 runs before bundling out on the final delivery thanks to a magnificent century by Brandon McMullen.

McMullen top-scored for Scotland with a 121-ball 136 which featured 14 boundaries and three sixes.

He received significant support from his captain Richie Berrington, who scored 60 off 62 deliveries.

Bilal Khan claimed a five-wicket haul for Oman but it could not bar Scotland from piling a big total on the scoreboard.

The huge total got on the nerves of Oman batters, who could only score 244/9 in response and thus handed a massive 76-run victory to Scotland.

Wicketkeeper batter Naseem Khushi was the top-scorer for Oman in their dismal show with the bat.

He hit seven boundaries and three sixes on his way to a 53-ball 69 but fell well short of steering his side to glory.

Chris Greaves led the bowling attack for Scotland with a five-wicket haul and conceded just 53 runs in his quota of 10 overs.

Madushka, Mendis hit double tons as Sri Lanka pummel Ireland

GALLE: Nishan Madushka and Kusal Mendis both made double centuries against Ireland Thursday as Sri Lanka’s top four batters all hit hundreds for only the third time in Test history.

In reply to Ireland’s 492 all out, their highest-ever Test score, Sri Lanka declared their first innings on 704 for three after tea on the fourth day of the second Test in Galle, 212 runs ahead.

Ireland lost two early wickets in their second innings to end the day 54 for two, needing a further 158 on the final day to avoid a second straight innings defeat.

Ireland could still achieve a historic first draw if they can hang on after losing all five of their games since obtaining Test status in 2017.

“We struggled to get Sri Lankan wickets. But the positive for us is the application and skill our batters showed in the first innings,” Ireland coach Gary Wilson said.

“The challenge for us now is to do it again tomorrow and go back home with a draw,” he added.

Madushka converted his maiden Test century into a double hundred, becoming the second-youngest Sri Lankan to score a Test 200 after Mahela Jayawardene.

He was dismissed for 205 in the third over after lunch, lbw to Andy McBrine, with Ireland successfully reviewing the decision after the initial appeal was turned down.

Madushka’s marathon knock lasted six minutes short of eight hours after he faced 339 deliveries and hit 22 fours and a six.

Mendis, who had twice been dismissed in the 190s, reached his first Test 200 by pushing a Ben White delivery behind square to steal a single.

He amassed 245 runs and was one short of Wasim Akram’s world record of 12 sixes in a Test innings when he was caught at long-off attempting to equal that mark.

Angelo Mathews was dismissed for a duck in the first Test and was put down on one this match, but made the most of his reprieve to post his 16th Test hundred.

That gave the hosts their quadruple-centurions entry in the history books, after India against Bangladesh in 2007 and Pakistan against Sri Lanka in 2019.

Captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who scored 115 on Wednesday, declared immediately.

Their monster total of 704 for three was also the highest-ever score in Galle, eclipsing Bangladesh’s 638 all out in 2013.

The pitch was still a batter’s paradise but Ramesh Mendis cleaned up James McCollum for 10 before Prabath Jayasuriya had Peter Moor caught at short extra cover.

Andy Balbirnie and Harry Tector took Ireland to stumps without further trouble, with the captain on 12 not out and the Ireland number four on seven.

Karunaratne, Madushka hit tons as Sri Lanka pile on runs

GALLE: Dimuth Karunaratne and Nishan Madushka both hit centuries as they amassed a record Sri Lankan opening stand in Galle of 228 in the second Test against Ireland on Wednesday.

The hosts were 357 for one at the close, still 135 runs behind but with nine wickets in hand.

Madushka was unbeaten on 149 at stumps, alongside Kusal Mendis, approaching a century of his own on 83, after Karunaratne departed for 115 — the only wicket to fall on the third day of the match.

The first Test ended inside three days with Sri Lanka’s spinners dominating, but the pitch in the second encounter has offered the spinners little assistance and the batsmen dominated proceedings.

Captain Karunaratne reached the 16th century of his test career, and his second consecutive ton, in just 116 balls.

But the left-hander mistimed a pull shot off Curtis Campher and was caught at deep fine leg in the last over before lunch, two balls after he was hit on the helmet.

Madushka had already brought up his maiden Test century, pulling a Harry Tector full toss for six.

Their 228 was a record Sri Lankan opening partnership at the ground, eclipsing the 193 between Marvan Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya against South Africa in 2000.

Mendis and Madushka continued the run-fest, with the number three racing to his 83 off 96 balls with seven fours and five sixes, including three in a row off debutant left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys, who was rapidly taken out of the attack.

Bad light interrupted play before tea, before the rains came down and it was called off for the day.

The prospect of a draw loomed large but Sri Lanka batting coach Naveed Nawaz insisted his side could still win the game “although rain has played havoc”.

“There’s a total of 180 overs left in the game now,” he told reporters. “If we bat for another 90 overs, we’ll be able to take a decent lead as our deficit is now only 135.

“We have wickets in hand and this is still a good batting pitch.”

Play will resume 15 minutes early on the final two days to make up for lost time.

Sri Lanka lead the two-match series 1-0.

Ireland fast bowling coach Ryan Eagleson conceded his team’s bowlers “are still learning and are less experienced in Test cricket”.

“So you have got to give them time and be patient,” he said.

Sri Lanka thrash Ireland by an innings and 280 runs in first Test

GALLE: Sri Lanka thrashed Ireland by an innings and 280 runs on Tuesday, in one of the biggest winning margins in Test history and the largest by the South Asian nation.

In what was also Ireland’s biggest defeat to date, the visitors were all out for 168 on day three in a hot and humid Galle International Stadium.

It was the 12th-largest innings victory in Test history, behind England’s win over the West Indies in 2007 by an innings and 283 runs.

Sri Lanka’s previous biggest win was when they hammered Zimbabwe by an innings and 254 runs in 2004 in Bulawayo.

Sri Lanka in their first innings declared on a mammoth 591 for 6.

Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne top scored with 179 runs while Kusal Mendis posted 140. Dinesh Chandimal and Sadeera Samarawickrama then hit unbeaten hundreds.

Sri Lanka then bowled out Ireland for 143 and enforced the follow-on, finishing the job just after tea on day three.

Prabath Jayasuriya took three wickets in Ireland’s second innings, adding to his seven in the first innings.

Ireland’s Harry Tector top-scored for the visitors in the second innings with 42.

Ireland have now lost all five of their matches since securing Test status in 2017.

Spinners, Mendis power Sri Lanka to thump Ireland in T20 WC

HOBART: Sri Lankan spinners stormed through the batting line to restrict Ireland to 128/8 before Kusal Mendis’ magnificent knock of 86 propelled Sri Lanka to their first Super 12 victory of the ICC men’s T20 World Cup, here on Sunday.

Set to chase 129, Sri Lanka eased through to victory in just 15 Overs with nine wickets to spare, thanks to a brilliant knock of Mendis up the order.

The right-handed batter scored an unbeaten 68 off just 43 deliveries, laced with five boundaries and three sixes.

The right-handed batter stitched two important partnerships with his fellow opener Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka respectively.

Opener de Silva fell in the ninth over to Gareth Delany after scoring 31 off 25 deliveries.

Sri Lanka’s No.3 Asalanka then batted sensibly with Mendis and put on a match-winning 70-run partnership with Mendis.

The left-handed batter scored 31 off 22 deliveries with the help of two boundaries.

Ireland, batting first, endured an early attack from the Sri Lankan spinners as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals, which halted them from amassing a big total.

Opening batter Paul Stirling put on a brief fight in the early phase of the innings as he played a brilliant knock of 34 off 25. He smashed four boundaries and a six before falling to Dhananjaya de Silva in the ninth over.

Amid his vital knock, Stirling partnered briefly with Harry Tector for the third wicket and added 29 runs.

Following Stirling’s dismissal, Tector held his ground firm and kept the scoreboard ticking singlehandedly when wickets were tumbling at the other end.

Binura Fernando then put on an end to Tector’s valiant knock in the 17th over, who walked back in disgust despite top scoring for the side with a gritty knock of 45 in 42. His inning featured two boundaries and a six.

The rest of the Irish batters had no answers to the Sri Lankan bowling attack and could amass 128/8 in their quota of 20 Overs.

Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva bagged two wickets each, while Dhananjaya de Silva, Chamika Karunaratne, Lahiru Kumara and Fernando struck out a batter each.
