KARACHI: Pakistan’s frontline pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi shared his feelings after conceding three sixes from Matthew Wade which cost Pakistan T20 World Cup 2021’s semi-final. 

Speaking in ARY News’ show Bouncer, Afridi disclosed that the night after defeat against Australia was too painful for him and it can’t be explained in words.

“It was too painful that I can’t explain it in words,” Afridi shared. “Did you cry that night,” the host asked. “Yes, I cried. It was painful for me to make comeback after that match. But, here I want to thank our senior players, Hafeez and Shoaib Bhai who motivated not only me but the whole team. Their support and motivation let me move on quickly,” he added.

Victory against arch-rivals India in T20 WC 2021

Afridi said victory against India was historic for them. “It was a memorable moment for our entire team. We played like a unit and that gave us victory,” he said.

“Wickets of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul were special for me. But, if you will ask me to pick one, it will be of Rahul,” the young bowler shared.

DUBAI: Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan has been promoted to number four in ICC T20I batting rankings following his consistent performance in the shorter format. 

In latest updates in the rankings, Rizwan has moved from fifth to fourth in rankings whereas Pakistani skipper Babar Azam retained top position on the chart.

England’s Dawid Malan is on second while South Africa’s Aiden Markram is third on the list. India’s former captain Virat Kohli has moved out from the top 10 after scoring no century in any format since the last two years.

DUBAI: Shaheen Shah Afridi’s spell against India in T20 World Cup 2021 has been voted ‘ICC’s Play of the Tournament’. 

Taking to Twitter, ICC announced the best play of the recently concluded T20 World Cup. “Play of the Tournament from the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is: Shaheen Afridi’s blistering opening spell against India,” they wrote. 

Afridi rattled India’s top-order by quickly picking up Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. Pakistan beat India by 10 wickets. It was their first victory against arch-rivals in the World Cup.

Australia beat New Zealand to lift their maiden T20 World Cup

DUBAI: Mitchell Marsh and David Warner partnered strongly to help Australia beat New Zealand by eight wickets to lift their maiden ICC T20 World Cup here at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. 

Warner and Marsh made the run-chase too easy for Australia as they managed to take the cup home. The two batters held their nerves calm and scored 92 runs to set the solid tone for Australia to chase 173 runs.

Warner made 53 runs off 38 balls including four boundaries and three sixes whereas Marsh remained not out for 77 laced with six boundaries and four sixes.

Later on, Marsh alongside Maxwell (28*) scored 66 runs to take Australia over the victory line.

Trent Boult was the only wicket-taker from New Zealand. He bagged two wickets for 18 runs.

Earlier, Kane Williamson led New Zealand from the front as they scored 172-4 in 20 overs against Australia in the mega contest.

The New Zealand’s captain was off to a pressure start, joining the team after they lost Daryl Mitchell for 28 runs. The right-handed batter stood composed and kept the scoreboard ticking.

He took charge later on and accelerated his innings that saw 85 runs off 48 balls laced with 10 boundaries and three sixes. Martin Guptill supported him well as he scored 28 off 35 balls including three boundaries.

Glenn Phillips made 18 including a boundary and six.

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood picked up three wickets and Adam Zampa managed a scalp.

DUBAI: Pakistan team’s interim head coach Saqlain Mushtaq gave huge respect to wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan who played T20 World Cup 2021’s semi-final after spending two nights in ICU for chest infection treatment. 

While talking to the media, Saqlain said Rizwan showed great courage in playing the important game for Pakistan despite severe illness.

“I will play even if I lose my life. It will be an honor for me to play,” Saqlain shared Rizwan’s words before the match.

“Rizwan is an inspiration for all the players. His determination and courage boosted our confidence and we allowed him to play the match,” the head coach said.

Speaking about Hasan Ali, Saqlain said he is a fighter, and dropped catches are part of the game. “Such phases come in players’ life. They have to deal with it. Hasan is a fighter and an important player for us. He was sad last night but now he is okay,” Saqlain added.

Saqlain once again felt proud of his boys’ performance in the mega event and hopes that they will continue such performance in the future.

‘You are a superstar’ Maxwell praises Haris

DUBAI: Australia’s all-rounder Glenn Maxwell highly praised Pakistani pacer Haris Rauf who rose to fame after playing under his captaincy for Melbourne Stars in Big Bash League (BBL). 

After the second T20 World Cup semi-final, Maxwell and Haris reunited for a picture and exchanged their signed shirts.

While sharing the picture on social media, Maxwell highly praised Haris for his rise in the Pakistan team.

“I’m so proud of how far this young man has come! What he has done for the Melbourne Stars and Pakistan cricket has been extraordinary! He is a fine human and a great teammate, and someone who I will always treasure as a friend. You are a superstar,” he wrote.

Fans, cricketers pay tribute to Rizwan’s courage

KARACHI: Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan spent two nights in the ICU before scoring 67 off 52 balls against Australia in the second T20 World Cup 2021’s semi-final. 

Pakistan team’s medical representative confirmed it while talking to the media after Pakistan lost to Australia by five wickets.

“Rizwan suffered a severe chest infection and was admitted to hospital for treatment. He spent two nights in the ICU before playing today’s match,” the medical representative shared.

Soon after the statement, a picture of Rizwan from the ICU went viral on social media. The picture managed to gain massive attention and people paid tribute to the cricketer for showing great courage.

It must be noted here that Rizwan got swelling in his right cheek after being hit by Mitchell Starc’s bouncer during his fighting knock.

New Zealand defeat England to advance to T20 World Cup final

ABU DHABI: New Zealand beat England by five wickets on Wednesday to reach the T20 World Cup final.

The Black Caps chased down a 167-run target by losing five wickets in the 19th over the T20 World Cup semi-final played at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi.

New Zealand opener Daryl Mitchell carried his bat in a stunning knock, producing a brilliant late display of power-hitting. Mitchell smashed an unbeaten 72 runs.
