“Bowlers saved Virat Kohli in T20 World Cup final”

Former cricketer and renowned presenter Sanjay Manjrekar asserted that bowlers saved India’s star batter Virat Kohli’s knock in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa.

Kohli scored 76 runs off 59 deliveries with the help of six fours and two sixes. At the back of his gutsy half-century, India managed to register 176/7 on the board, setting a stiff challenge for South Africa.

However, Kohli’s knock was trumped by Heinrich Klaasen’s quickfire half-century, which at one point, had put South Africa in a comfortable position to win their first-ever cricket World Cup before the pacers returned and snatched an astounding victory for the Men in Blue.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Manjrekar while talking to ESPN Cricinfo, stated that Virat Kohli’s knock had put India in trouble but the bowlers saved the day for the team with exceptional death bowling.

“By playing that innings, Hardik Pandya, one of their most devastating batters, had just two balls to face. So I thought India’s batting was good, but Virat Kohli had potentially played an innings that would’ve put India in a tight corner. And it almost proved to be that, before these guys’ bowlers came in the end,” Manjrekar said.

Manjrekar then went on to claim that a bowler should have been adjudged the Player of the Match instead of Kohli as he played with a strike rate of 128.

“India were in a losing position, 90 per cent winning chances [for South Africa]. The complete turnaround actually saved Virat Kohli’s innings because he played virtually half the innings with a strike-rate of 128,” said Manjrekar.

“My Player of the Match would’ve been a bowler because they actually took the game from the jaws of defeat and won it for India,” he concluded.

India end title drought with T20 World Cup 2024 win

BARBADOS: Pacers forced a comeback of the ages and steered India to edge past South Africa and win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, here at Kensington Oval on Saturday.

The Rohit Sharma-led side, who lost in the finals of the World Test Championship and the 50-overs home World Cup last year, managed to curtail South Africa at 169/8, defeating the Proteas by seven runs.

This was South Africa’s first senior men’s final since the inaugural Champions Trophy in Bangladesh in 1998, having lost seven semi-finals, including a gut-wrenching defeat against Australia in the 1999 World Cup.

Since entering World Cups in 1991, following the end of apartheid, South Africa had lost seven semi-finals in the two short formats.

Set to chase 177, South Africa came up short despite Heinrich Klaasen’s quickfire half-century.

The Proteas had a shaky start to the run chase as Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram perished cheaply inside the first three overs with just 12 runs on the board.

Following the early debacle, Quinton de Kock joined forces with Tristian Stubbs and put on an anchoring partnership for the third wicket.

The duo added brisk 58 runs amid the stand until Axar Patel cleaned up Stubbs in the ninth over. He scored 31 off 21 deliveries.

Quinton de Kock was then involved in another important partnership for South Africa when he added 36 runs for the fourth wicket with Heinrich Klaasen.

The wicketkeeper batter finally perished in the 13th over after scoring an anchoring 39 off 31 balls.

Meanwhile, Klaasen, unfazed by de Kock’s dismissal, turned the game on its head with belligerent hitting, the highlight of which was a 24-run over against Axar Patel.

Klaasen’s fireworks brought the required run-rate down to the run-a-ball as they needed 30 off the last five overs.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma then brought back his ace pacer Bumrah into the attack, who began to exert pressure on the South African batters, conceding just four runs in his third over.

Bumrah’s tight over resulted in Klaasen taking a wild dash on the first delivery of the next over and was caught behind after top-scoring for South Africa with a 27-ball 52, peppered with two fours and five sixes.

India’s pacers continued to exert pressure on South Africa, who crumbled under pressure and lost momentum.

The Proteas then required 16 off the final over with David Miller on strike. The pinch hitter, however, could not live up to his title and fell on the first delivery, making it an easier affair for India.

Hardik Pandya bagged three wickets for India, followed by Bumrah and Arshdeep with two each while Patel chipped in with a wicket.

Put into bat first, India registered 176/7 on the board, courtesy of a crucial fourth-wicket partnership between Kohli and Axar Patel.

India had a briefly flying start to their innings as they scored the highest runs (15) in the first over of the T20 World Cup final.

Aiden Markram’s decision to introduce spin straight up bore fruits as Keshav Maharaj dismissed in-form India captain Rohit Sharma (9) and Rishabh Pant (0) in an eventful second over to give South Africa an upper hand.

Virat Kohli then put together a brief one-sided partnership with Suryakumar Yadav before the latter fell victim to Kagiso Rabada in the fifth over, bringing the total down to 34/3 in 4.3 overs.

Kohli was then joined by Axar Patel in the middle and the duo combined to laun12Rabadach recovery.

The pair batted sensibly and took calculated risks to add 72 runs for the fourth-wicket stand that lasted with Quinton de Kock bringing the curtains down to Axar’s knock with a direct hit.

Axar Patel scored 47 off 31 deliveries with the help of one four and four sixes.

Kohli switched gears after bringing up his first half-century in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

He knitted an important fifth-wicket partnership with Shivam Dube which yielded 57 runs until he finally perished in the penultimate over.

Virat Kohli remained the top-scorer for India with a 59-ball 76 which featured six fours and two sixes.

Shivam Dube then decided to take on South African bowlers but fell victim to Anrich Nortje in the final over after scoring 27 off 16, laced up with three fours and a six.

Nortje and Maharaj bagged two wickets each for South Africa while Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada chipped in with a wicket apiece.

The upcoming final of the 20-team mega event is promised to be a treat for cricket fans as the two unbeaten sides will collide for the prestigious title.

Chris Gayle also picked India’s ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah as the player to watch out for in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, highlighting his prowess in death bowling.

“India are going to be so hard to beat. They bat so deep and in Jasprit Bumrah, have a world-class death bowler who can break the hearts of the opponents,” Gayle said.

“In contrast, I picked South Africa as a dark horse before the tournament began, and it is very special to see them finally reach their first final after so many semi-final upsets.

“Getting over the hump and winning a World Cup is so special and if they can do it, it will create memories that will last a lifetime for the players and the nation.”

It is pertinent to mention that both India and South Africa are currently unbeaten in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

South Africa won all their eight matches while India won seven as their group-stage fixture against Canada was abandoned without a ball bowled.

AB de Villiers predicts T20 World Cup 2024 winner

Legendary batter AB de Villiers on Friday, predicted the winner of the highly-anticipated ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final between South Africa and India.

The former captain acknowledged the challenge Rohit Sharma’s side possesses but insisted that the Proteas have all bases covered and are favourites to clinch their first-ever title.

“The moment of truth has arrived. South Africans have been waiting for 33 years to see the Proteas play in an ICC World Cup final. After so many heartbreaks, we know all about them. South Africa will play India in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados on Saturday and I am backing the Proteas to win. It will be close as we all know India are a team of superstars but I believe South Africa’s time has come,” De Villiers said.

“This Proteas team brings power. Power at the top order with De Kock, Hendricks, and Markram, power in the middle with Miller, Klaasen, and Stubbs, and power in the pace attack of Jansen, Rabada, and Nortje. Now add the skills of Shamsi and Maharaj, and you’ve all the bases covered. Some will say that they have not produced their best cricket in the tournament so far but they have won eight from eight and that’s not bad,” he added.

“India have their own match-winners of course and they also bring the power of more than a billion people urging them to go out there and win another World Cup. Maybe my heart is ruling my head but I just think it’s South Africa’s time,” AB de Villiers concluded.

India and South Africa will lock horns in the high-voltage T20 World Cup 2024 final at Kensington Oval, Barbados on June 29.

Both teams are unbeaten in the ongoing mega event as South Africa won all their eight matches while India won seven as one of their group-stage fixtures against Canada was abandoned without a ball bowled.

Ricky Ponting has an advice for South Africa ahead of T20 World Cup final

Australia’s two-time World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting offered a piece of advice for South Africa ahead of their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final against India.

South Africa and India will lock horns in the final of the ongoing mega event at Kensington Oval, Barbados on June 29.

This is the first time the Proteas Men are competing in a World Cup final, having lost seven semi-finals, including a gut-wrenching defeat against Australia in the 1999 World Cup.

Meanwhile, former Australia captain Ponting wants South Africa to embrace the importance of the big match and advised the team to enjoy it as they have not been there before.

“A lot of teams say ‘It’s just another game’ and they try and hide away from how big the occasion is and it is no good doing that. it is all about embracing it for what it is,” Ponting stated.

“These players haven’t been there before, so enjoy tonight, enjoy tomorrow. But make sure everything you do leading in is the same and your preparation is the same,” he added.

Ricky Ponting also lauded South Africa for maintaining a perfect record in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 as the side is the only team to have won all of their matches and urged them to be themselves in the final.

“They are undefeated up to here, so they don’t need to change anything and they don’t need to try any harder.

“They just need to turn up and be the best version of themselves and the best version of themselves as a team on the day and give themselves the best chance.

“If they do that, they will be hard to beat.”

“If I didn’t get injured, maybe we could’ve won,” Shaheen Afridi on T20 WC

Pakistan’s ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi commented on his heart-breaking injury in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 final against England and pointed at the possibility of Pakistan triumphing had he not been injured.

In the enthralling T20 World Cup final, Pakistan, batting first, set England to chase a mere 138 on a tricky Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) surface, which was making it difficult for the batters to score freely.

Pakistan’s pace attack, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, showcased determination not to let England run away with an easy victory as they rattled their top-order and restricted them to 45/3 in the sixth over.

Following the early setback, Ben Stokes and Harry Brook launched England’s recovery as the pair anchored the run chase with a crucial partnership.

Pakistan were in dire need of a breakthrough and they got it; courtesy of Shadab Khan, who deceived Brook with a loopy delivery outside off and the latter fired it straight to long-off where Shaheen Shah Afridi dove forward to gobble it.

The breakthrough, instead of a success, turned into a massive blow for the green shirts as they lost the services of their ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, who hurt his injured knee in the process.

Shaheen then walked off the field briefly, returned to roars and raced in to bowl the 16th with England still requiring a tough 41 from 30 balls, but pulled up after one ball.

Ben Stokes then smashed a four and six off Iftikhar Ahmed, who was given the ball to complete the 16th, and it was over for Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Shaheen Shah Afridi has finally opened up on the heartbreaking incident in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo and also opined that Pakistan may have won if he did not get injured in such a clutch situation.

“And in this tournament [2022], if I didn’t get injured at such a crucial moment, maybe we could’ve won. Maybe if I had stayed fit and bowled
” he trails off. “Injuries can happen at any time,” said Shaheen.

The left-arm pacer also recalled the thrashing, he received from Matthew Wade in the previous edition, which ultimately steered Australia to their maiden T20 World Cup title.

“Obviously, it’s every player’s dream to win a World Cup for his country and I still remember 2021, how that ended,” he said.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, however, shared that he is trying to forget the past in order to be able to move forward.

“If I think too much about them then I won’t be able to move ahead,” Shaheen stated.

The left-arm pacer also responded to a question regarding a dip in his bowling speed post-injury and termed taking wickets more important than the pace.

“Everyone has a view about it [the pace], but I’ve been feeling good. You look at yourself, even if you are bowling 110kmph and taking wickets, you’re feeling good. I took wickets. I gave 100% in the field, that matters more. Speed doesn’t matter as much but if there has been a dip, it will improve with time.

“[I was injured] two months out before the [T20] World Cup, two-three months after the [T20] World Cup also. So it will of course take time to get back. That match energy or fitness, you only get it from playing matches. Since the PSL I’ve been feeling better, I got better through it and then played internationals for Pakistan as well. With time I’ll improve and the more I play the more I’ll improve.”

Cricket fraternity praises Pakistan pace attack for brave fightback in final

MELBOURNE: Although Pakistan lost the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday, their fast bowlers especially Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah won the hearts of millions of cricket fans and earned the praises of many pundits of the game and former players for their courageous counterattack while defending a low total against England.

The result and numbers might not do justice to the brilliance and prowess of the Pakistan pace attack but the ones watching the game cannot deny the great spectacle of the pace bowling that they witnessed in the eventful finale yesterday.

Following the final, renowned Indian journalist and commentator Harsha Bhogle expressed on Twitter that few teams would have defended such a low total the way Pakistan did.

“Credit to Pakistan. Few teams would have defended 137 the way they did. Best bowling team.” he said.

Similarly, England’s former captain Michael Vaughan praised the Green Shirts and claimed that Shaheen’s injury was a turning point in the game, otherwise, the result could have been different.

“Have to say the Shaheen Afridi Injury had a major impact on the outcome of the game .. Pakistan have once again been brilliant to watch .. they being so much to the world game ..” he wrote on Twitter.

West Indies’ ex-cricketer and renowned commentator Ian Bishop said although England proved their dominance in white-ball cricket, Pakistan showed great spirit and hoped that the team would get even better.

“Well played England. Duly deserved for truly being outstanding in the white ball game for the last 5 years. Pakistan showed great spirit to get the final and will get even better.” he tweeted.

Furthermore, famous Indian cricket analyst and former cricketer, Aakash Chopra praised the valiant display of pace bowling in the T20 World Cup final and claimed that only Pakistan could have stretched England that far in the run chase.

“Pakistan’s bowling made a match of it
to be honest, only Pakistan could’ve stretched England this far. Outstanding bowling unit.” he expressed on twitter.

Similarly, many former cricketers of the country also lauded the team’s pace battery and an incredible fightback in the final despite batting jittery and not putting many runs on the board.

Fast bowler Wahab Riaz said: “Regardless of that we didn’t finish the way we wanted to! But I salute the bowling lineup for an exceptional fight, each and every one has been amazing! Specially Haris Rauf, Shaheen Afridi, Shadab Khan and Naseem Shah. Congratulations England cricket.”

Likewise, former off-spinner Saeed Ajmal termed Pakistan’s pace attack “the best in the world” and claimed if any other team were defending such a paltry target, England would had finish the game in 15 overs.

“We Proved Today that we Have the Best Bowling attack in the World..if there was any other team against England with total of 137 They would’ve ended it in 15 overs Max..Proud of You Boys ” he tweeted.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan were defeated by England in the final of the ICC T20 Men’s T20 World Cup by six wickets as all-rounder Ben Stokes held his nerves strong and survive the furious pace attack to help his team achieve the 138-run target.
