Sanju Samson, spinners steer India to victory over South Africa

DURBAN: Spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi took three wickets each after Sanju Samson’s century to help India defeat South Africa in the first T20I of the four-match series here on Friday.

Chasing a target of 203, South Africa were bundled for 141 in 17.5 overs.

The hosts had an unwanted start to the run-chase as they lost skipper Aiden Markram (8) in the first over. They lost two more wickets inside the powerplay before Heinrich Klaasen (25) and David Miller (18) stitched a 42-run partnership to stabilize the innings.

However, Chakravarthy dismissed both batters in the same over to diminish all hopes of South Africa, leaving them struggling at 87-5 inside 12 overs.

Bishnoi also took two wickets in the next over to further increase South Africa’s troubles.

Gerald Coetzee played a cameo of 23 runs from 11 balls before India bundle South Africa for 141, with Chakravarthy and Bishnoi leading the bowling attack.

Avesh Khan also chipped in with two wickets, while  Arshdeep Singh bagged one.

Earlier, South Africa opted to field first and drew first blood with Gerald Coetzee taking the wicket of Abhishek Sharma (7).

However, Sanju Samson knitted a quick partnership of 66 runs from 37 runs with the captain Suryakumar Yadav (21). Patrick Kruger got rid of Yadav, bringing out Tilak Varma to the crease.

Samson and Varma added 77 runs for the third wicket from only 34 balls to push the team’s total to 167 inside 15 overs. However, both batters fell in quick succession to leave India struggling.

Varma scored 33 runs off 18 balls before falling prey to Keshav Maharaj, while Samson was dismissed by Nqabayomzi Peter in the next over.

Samson top-scored with a blistering 107-run knock from 50 balls, laced with seven boundaries and ten sixes.

South Africa bowlers did not allow India to recover from this double blow as the visitors slipped from 167-2 to 202-8 with the eighth wicket falling off the last ball of the innings.

Coetzee led the bowling attack of South Africa with the figures of 3-37, while Maharaj, Peter, Kruger and Marco Jansen bagged one wicket each.

Michael Vaughan, who is covering the ongoing three-match Test series between Australia and Pakistan, shared his views on dismal India’s performance. He called them an “underachieving” team who are nowhere near winning a major ICC tournament.

“I think they are, yeah,” Michael Vaughan said while answering a question whether if India are an underachieving team. “Well, they don’t win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skillsets… they won here (Australia) twice, magnificent but the last few World Cups, been nowhere, T20 World Cups, nowhere.

“You go so South Africa, who are, you know, useful in Test match cricket and to produce a performance like that… I mean, with all the talent they have, and the resources they have, I don’t think they win anything.”

Dominant India humble South Africa in top-of-the-table clash

KOLKATA: Virat Kohli scored his record 49th ODI century before Ravindra Jadeja’s five-fer lifted India to hand a 243-run thrashing to South Africa in the top-of-the-table ICC World Cup 2023 clash.

Set to chase a daunting 327, the strong South Africa batting lineup unfolded in the 28th over and could score a meagre 83 runs in response.

All-rounder Marco Jansen remained the top-scorer for South Africa amid their dismal show with the bat with a cautious 14-run knock.

Besides him, only Rassie van der Dussen (13), David Miller and Temba Bavuma, 11 each, were the other batters to get into the double digits.

Ravindra Jadeja led the bowling attack for India with 5/33, followed by Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami, who bagged two wickets each.

Kohli on his 35th birthday remained unbeaten on 101, equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI centuries – 49.

After winning the toss, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma helped India race to 61 runs in five overs, scoring a blistering 40 off 22, however, he got out two balls later courtesy of a terrific catch by his South African counterpart Temba Bavuma.

Rohit Sharma’s knock featured six boundaries and two sixes.

His opening partner soon followed him back to the pavilion after scoring 23 off 24 as he was undone by Keshav Maharaj to disturb his stumps.

Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer then joined hands and knitted a 134-run stand for the third wicket to take India’s total to 227.

Both batters reached their half-centuries before Lungi Ngidi broke the partnership with an off-cutter outside off-stump, which was ballooned up by Iyer and landed safely in the hands of Aiden Markram.

Iyer scored a gutsy 77 from 87 balls with the help of seven boundaries and two sixes.

Kohli was then involved in two brief partnerships with Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, scoring 36 and an unbeaten 41 respectively to push India’s total to 326-5.

Yadav scored 22 off 14, while Jadeja scored 29* off 15.

South Africa edge India, dent Pakistan’s semi-final berth hopes

PERTH: South African batters David Miller and Aiden Markram smashed a half-century each to power their side to chase down the 134-run target and sealed a tense five-wicket victory over India in the Super12s fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

South Africa’s win over India exerted a major dent in Pakistan’s chances to make their way to the semi-final of the mega event despite defeating the Netherlands earlier in the second match of the tripleheader.

Set to chase 134, South Africa were off to a tense start as the side lost three wickets for just 24 runs inside the power-play.

Following the early attack launched by the Indian pacers, Markram and Miller stitched a gritty 76-run partnership for the fourth wicket and anchored the run chase.

Markram scored 52 off 41 balls with the help of six boundaries and a six before falling victim to Hardik Pandya in the 16th over.

Miller remained unaffected by Markram’s dismissal and powered his side to complete a tense final-over run chase.

He top-scored for his side with an unbeaten knock of 59 in just 46 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and three sixes.

For India, Arshdeep Singh bagged two wickets, while Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin and Pandya struck out a batter each.

Batting first after winning the toss, India had a poor start to their innings as they lost half of the side for just 49 runs as captain Rohit Sharma (15), KL Rahul (9), Virat Kohli (12), Deepak Hooda (0) and Hardik Pandya (2) perished cheaply as right-arm pacer Lungi Ngidi wreaked havoc in his opening spell.

Following the slump, Yadav stood up for his team and embarked on recovery for his side as he stitched a fighting 52-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Dinesh Karthik.

Yadav was the main aggressor of the gritty stand and scored the majority of the runs.

Left-arm pacer Wayne Parnell then brought an end to Karthik’s struggling knock as he struck in the 16th over to provide his side with a much-needed breakthrough. The wicketkeeper batter could score six off 15 deliveries.

The Indian batting tail then crumbled against the strong South African bowling attack as their key batter Yadav, too, fell in the 19th over.

Yadav top-scored with a magnificent 68-run knock in just 40 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and three boundaries.

Ngidi led the bowling attack for South Africa courtesy of his astounding bowling figures of 4/29, while Parnell returned with 3/15.

Rossouw hits century as South Africa thump India to seal consolation win

INDORE: South Africa’s left-handed batter Rilee Rossouw wreaked havoc over the Indian bowling line-up as he smashed a 48-ball century in the third T20I to power his side to a massive 49-run consolation victory.

Batting first on the invitation of the hosts’ captain Rohit Sharma, South Africa finished at a mammoth 227/3 in 20 overs at the back of a magnificent century from Rossouw.

The touring side had a dismal start as they lost their captain Temba Bavuma (3) cheaply at a combined score of 30 in the fifth over.

Following the early slump, wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock and Rossouw stood up for their team and added a crucial 90 runs for the second wicket.

The stand was majorly dominated by de Kock, who, however, fell in the 12th over after a terrific half-century; scoring 68 off 43 with the help of six boundaries and four sixes.

Rossouw, on the other hand, seemed unaffected by de Kock’s dismissal and carried on the onslaught on the Indian batters as he top-scored for his side with an unbeaten century knock. He scored 100* off just 48 deliveries including seven boundaries and eight sixes.

Last match centurion for South Africa – David Miller scored an unbeaten 19 off a mere five including three consecutive sixes in the final over.

For India, Umesh Yadav and Deepak Chahar managed to make one scalp each.

Set to chase a mammoth 228, India fell 49 runs short as the home side bundled out for 178 in the 19th over.

Dinesh Karthik top-scored for India with a quickfire knock of 43; facing a mere 21 deliveries and smashing four boundaries and as many sixes, while Chahar chipped in with a crucial 31 at the death.

The rest of the Indian batters failed to contribute significantly in the run chase and the hosts, as a result, failed to complete the whitewash over South Africa.

Dwaine Pretorius led the bowling attack for the Proteas with 3/26, while Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, and Wayne Parnell bagged two each. Kagiso Rabada, on the other hand, struck out a batter.
