Temba Bavuma to miss ICC World Cup 2023 warm-up matches

South Africa’s captain Temba Bavuma is set to miss warm-up matches against Afghanistan and New Zealand at ICC World Cup 2023 because he is flying back home for family reasons.

Aiden Markram will fill in Bavuma’s shoes and will lead South Africa in the warm-up games with Afghanistan and New Zealand on September 29 and October 2, respectively. Both matches will be played at Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.

Temba Bavuma is set to join the team before South Africa’s first match at the ICC World Cup 2023 against Sri Lanka at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on October 7.

South Africa are also without experienced fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala, who were ruled out of the ICC World Cup 2023 after failing to clear a fitness test. They were replaced by all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo and pace bowler Lizaad Williams.

Both pace bowlers were named in South Africa’s initial 15-member squad for World Cup 2023 and also featured in the home ODI series victory against Australia.

However, both players failed to play their part in the series victory as Anrich Nortje played only one match and was ruled out after bowling five overs due to a back injury, while, Sisanda Magala managed to pick one wicket in four overs in the third ODI before being ruled out due to discomfort in his previously injured knee.

Bavuma ends ‘long journey’ with century as South Africa take charge

JOHANNESBURG: Temba Bavuma said he tried to “stay in the moment” as he approached a long-awaited second Test century. But he admitted that he could not entirely quell his emotions.

The South African captain’s 171 not out put his team in a strong position on the third day of the second Test against the West Indies at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Friday.

A second innings total of 287 for seven gave them an overall lead of 356.

West Indian captain Kraigg Brathwaite said he still had hopes of a West Indian win. “The pitch is still a good one,” he said.

Bavuma had to wait more than seven years to reach three figures for the second time.

“I tried to stay in the moment as much as I could,” he said. “But when I got to 96 or so the crowd’s energy started picking up in anticipation. My emotions also started picking up.”

He scored three singles to get to 99. Then came a delivery from Alzarri Joseph.

“I got a ball outside my stumps and went for it.”

The shot flew off the middle of his bat over cover and raced to the boundary.

A small crowd rose to give him a standing ovation.

After reaching three figures off 192 balls, Bavuma went on to 171 off another 83 deliveries. He hit 20 fours.

“It has been a long journey,” Bavuma told journalists. “There have been a lot more downs than ups. I keep learning about myself and try to take everything in my stride, to keep my chin up and stay true to myself.

“I’ve got a lot better understanding of myself and the pressures and challenges that come with international cricket.”

Bavuma, 32, made his first hundred in his seventh Test and his eighth innings in a high-scoring draw against England at Newlands in Cape Town in January 2016.

He played in another 48 Tests and batted in 88 more innings without repeating the feat despite hitting 19 half-centuries.

South Africa’s most reliable batsman over the past two years, Bavuma was appointed captain before the first Test against the West Indies – and was out for a ‘pair’.

He came in on Friday with his team in trouble at eight for two. He accumulated a 107-ball half-century while partners struggled and succumbed against good West Indian bowling.

Bavuma said the situation helped him take his mind off personal milestones.

“I have become accustomed to situations where I have to absorb the pressure, although I haven’t made the big scores. A hundred wasn’t the target. It came along the way. It helped a lot coming in in that position.”

South Africa were 103 for five, a precarious 172 runs ahead, when Bavuma was joined by Wiaan Mulder, one of several  batsmen yet to prove themselves at top level.

Mulder made 42 in a 103-run partnership which accelerated after Bavuma reached his century. Twenty-one overs between tea and the second new ball yielded 98 runs for the loss of Mulder’s wicket.

Simon Harmer made 19 while Bavuma scored freely as the pair added 71 for the seventh wicket.

Brathwaite praised Bavuma: “He played a very good innings. I can’t fault the bowlers’ effort.”

With the pitch not posing any undue problems, South Africa were seeking a big lead, especially as there was concern about the fitness of Kagiso Rabada, one of only two fast bowlers picked by the hosts.

Rabada took two for 19 in 12 overs in the first innings, but did not bowl after tea on the second afternoon and was reportedly suffering from a sore back and perhaps a groin strain.

Bavuma did not provide any details but admitted that Rabada was in the hands of South Africa’s medical team.

“They say they’ll get him out on the field,” he said.

Aiden Markram replaces Temba Bavuma as South Africa T20I captain

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday, appointed experienced batter Aiden Markram as the new T20I captain ahead of their home series against West Indies.

Markram, who led Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the inaugural SA20 title, has now replaced Temba Bavuma as South Africa’s T20I captain, who has been dropped from the squad altogether.

Furthermore, the CSA also made changes in the men’s side’s coaching setup as former all-rounder JP Duminy has been roped in as the batting coach on a permanent basis while Rory Kleinveldt, has been given the temporary bowling coach role in the white-ball setup.

“I would like to congratulate Aiden on his appointment as captain of the Proteas T20I team,” director of cricket Enoch Nkwe said in a release. “Leadership is extremely familiar to him having successfully led on so many levels. He is a player that inspires confidence and he has all the qualities to succeed in the role. We have no doubt will help take South Africa to the next level.

“At the same time, we would like to thank Temba for filling the position so aptly over the past two years. He has done a commendable job during this period and now has a new role to fulfil within the national set-up.”

South Africa’s T20I Squad: Aiden Markram (c), Quinton de Kock , Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Sisanda Magala, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Wayne Parnell, Kagiso Rabada, Rilee Rossouw, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape sign Temba Bavuma for SA20 remainder

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa’s white-ball captain Temba Bavuma has been roped in by Sunrisers Eastern Cape for the remainder of SA20.

After going unsold in the players’ auction for the inaugural SA20, the South African captain will now represent Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the home’s marquee league, which resumes today following the conclusion of their home ODI series against England.

The right-handed batter replaced his English counterpart Tom Abell, who was named in England’s ODI and T20I squads for their historic tour of Bangladesh.

Bavuma, who enjoyed a remarkable series with the bat against England – finishing as the leading run-scorer for South Africa with 180 runs in three matches – finally managed to impress the franchise to rope him in for the marquee league’s remainder.

It is pertinent to mention that South Africa’s white-ball captain will play his first SA20 match tomorrow when the Eastern Cape take on Durban Super Giants.

The Eastern Cape are currently placed in the second spot behind leaders Pretoria Capitals and are looking solid to make it to the league’s semi-final.

Sam Curran fined for ‘excessive celebration’ of Bavuma dismissal

KIMBERLEY: England all-rounder Sam Curran has been fined 15 percent of his match fee and handed a demerit point for “excessively celebrating” his dismissal of South African captain Temba Bavuma in the second one-day international on Sunday.

The penalty was announced by the International Cricket Council on Tuesday.

The teams meet in the third and final match of the World Cup Super League series in Kimberley on Wednesday.

Bavuma made 109 as South Africa took a decisive 2-0 series lead in Bloemfontein before scooping a ball from Curran into his stumps.

Curran ran down the pitch and got close to Bavuma as he celebrated the wicket.

Match referee Jeff Crowe of New Zealand fined Curran following a report by the umpires. Curran admitted the offence and there was no need for a formal hearing.

According to the ICC, Curran was found to have committed a level one offence of the ICC code of conduct when he “excessively celebrated towards and in close proximity to the dismissed batter, being an action which had the potential to provoke an aggressive reaction from Bavuma”.

If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within a 24-month period he faces a ban. It was Curran’s first offence within the time period.

Bavuma century sets up series win for South Africa

BLOEMFONTEIN: South African captain Temba Bavuma hit a century to lead his team to a series-clinching five-wicket win in the second one-day international against England at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

Bavuma hit 109 as South Africa chased down an England total of 342 for seven, winning with five balls to spare.

Bavuma battled cramps shortly before reaching his hundred. With his score on 96 there was a lengthy break while he received treatment. He reacted in emotional fashion when he hit the next ball from Adil Rashid through the covers for four.

He thumped his chest and pointed to his name on the back of his shirt. He was the only member of the South African team not signed up for the country’s new Twenty20 league and his place in the national white-ball teams had been questioned because of a perceived inability to score at the rapid rate required in modern limited overs cricket.

But he was in outstanding form on Sunday as he spearheaded South Africa’s third-highest successful run chase, facing only 102 balls and hitting 14 fours and a six.

“It was very special,” said Bavuma. “It was very enjoyable. I managed to hit a few out of the middle.”

Bavuma said it was a confidence-boosting performance from his team, who have yet to qualify automatically for the World Cup later this year. “We knew we had to come out and play. We played the conditions, which were good for batting.”

Bavuma sent England in to bat, reasoning correctly that there could be early life in the pitch. England struggled initially, losing both openers inside the first seven overs, but prospered as batting conditions eased.

Harry Brook, playing in his second one-day international after being dismissed for nought in the first match on Friday, made 80 off 75 balls. Captain Jos Buttler hit an unbeaten 94 off 82 deliveries.

Moeen Ali was also in fine form for England, hitting 51 off 45 balls and sharing a fifth wicket stand of 106 with Buttler.

There was a brief lull after Ali’s dismissal but England scored 60 runs off the last four overs, with Sam Curran hitting three sixes in scoring 28.

“We didn’t expect the ball to swing as much as it did at the start but to come back and post 340 was a fantastic effort,” said Buttler. “It was a brilliant game of cricket and a great chase by South Africa.”

Bavuma and Quinton de Kock made a fast start, putting on 77 for the first wicket in 12 overs. All the South African batsmen made contributions and the hosts were always up with or close to the required rate. David Miller hit 58 not out off 37 balls and finished the match with a six off Chris Woakes.

Bavuma ruled out of England tour, Miller, Maharaj to lead white-ball sides

CAPE TOWN: South Africa white-ball captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the forthcoming England tour after picking up an elbow injury during their away T20Is against India.

The white-ball captain Bavuma suffered an elbow injury during the fourth T20I against India as he dived to complete a single and fell abruptly onto his left arm, which resulted in him injuring his soft tissues and bones.

The 32-years-old will not be requiring surgery but is likely to take eight weeks to recover completely and therefore, has missed his side’s all-format tour to England.

Following Bavuma’s absence, the left-handed batter David Miller and the spinner Keshav Maharaj will be taking up the captaincy roles in T20Is and ODIs respectively. Whereas, Dean Elgar will continue to lead the Proteas in the longest format.

The explosive left-handed batter Rilee Rossouw returns to international cricket after close to six years; Gerald Coetzee receives his maiden call-up for the T20Is.
