South Africa beat England by 14 runs in rain-marred T20I

CARDIFF: Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch took two wickets apiece as South Africa beat England by 14 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in a rain-marred first T20I here on Wednesday.

Bad weather reduced what should have been a 40-over contest at Sophia Gardens to just 12.5 in total.

England, chasing a revised 69 in five overs for victory, finished on 54-5 as they failed to keep pace with a daunting run rate of nearly 14 an over against a quality attack.

Jansen (2-18) and Bosch (2-20) did the bulk of the damage in an England innings where only Jos Buttler (25) passed 20.

Earlier, several South African batsmen made quickfire 20s in a total of 97-5 in 7.5 overs after Brook won the toss.

South Africa captain Aiden Markram struck 28 off 14 balls, with two fours and two sixes, although he was dropped in the deep by Phil Salt.

Donovan Ferreira, the player of the match, hit three sixes in his 25 not out and Dewald Brevis made 23.

Fast bowler Luke Wood was only playing after the hosts decided against risking Jofra Archer in the wet conditions following the express quick’s four-wicket haul in England’s record 342-run win over South Africa in the third ODI at Southampton.

But Wood had opener Ryan Rickelton caught behind for a golden duck in a haul of 2-22.

“It feels like madness, but you can think about things. It was swinging about with the new ball, but you need one or two guys to make a cameo and you can reach a good score,” said Markram who led the Proteas to a 2-1 ODI series win, at the presentation ceremony.

England captain Harry Brook added: “We can’t read into that too much. We didn’t execute as well as we could have done.”

Both Salt, who holed out off the very first ball of the chase to the returning Kagiso Rabada, and Brook were out for ducks.

In between Jacob Bethell, fresh from his maiden professional century at Southampton, made seven before he skyed Jansen to cover.

Buttler kept England in the hunt before he was caught behind, off Jansen’s last ball of the fourth over.

England now needed 26 off six balls and Bosch, who dismissed Tom Banton with the opening delivery of the last over, ensured they never really got close, with South Africa going 1-0 up in this three-match series ahead of Friday’s second T20 at Old Trafford.

Openers, Khaka power South Africa into Women’s T20 WC Final

CAPE TOWN: South African openers Laur Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits struck magnificent half-centuries before bowlers led the home side to edge England and into the final of the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

Set to chase 165, England fell five runs short as the side finished at 158/8 in their allotted 20 overs with none of their batters could score big in the semi-final.

England were off to a flying start in the run chase as openers Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley stitched a magnificent 53-run partnership.

Ayabonga Khaka then dented England’s pursuit with twin strikes including Dunkley’s wicket in the sixth over and brought South Africa back into the game. Dunkley scored a brisk 28 off 16 deliveries.

Wyatt then stitched a crucial partnership with Nat Sciver-Brunt and added 32 runs for the third wicket before Khaka struck again to see the end of Wyatt’s knock. She scored 34 off 30 deliveries.

Following Wyatt’s dismissal, skipper Heather Knight joined Nat Sciver-Brunt in the middle and attempted to anchor the run chase with a brief 27-run partnership before the latter perished in the 17th over.

Nat Sciver-Brunt remained the top-scorer for England with 40 off 34 deliveries, hitting five boundaries.

Following her dismissal, England ran into a frustrating collapse that eventually resulted in them falling a mere five runs short of the glory.

Khaka led the bowling attack for South Africa with 4/29 while Shabnim Ismail returned with 3/27.

Earlier, after opting to bat first, South Africa piled 164/4 at the back of brilliant half-centuries by their openers Wolvaardt and Britz.

The duo scripted a solid start for their side as they scored 96 runs for the first wicket before Wolvaardt perished briefly after amassing her half-century. She scored 53 off 44 deliveries, smashing five boundaries and a six.

Britz then partnered with Marizanne Kapp and took South Africa to 142 inside 18 overs before finally falling victim to Lauren Bell. She top-scored for the Proteas women with 68 off 55 deliveries and struck six boundaries and two sixes.

Her dismissal triggered a late collapse in the South African batting lineup as the side slipped to 145/4 in the 19th over.

Kapp, however, stood her ground firm and guided South Africa to a defendable total with an unbeaten 27-run knock off just 13 deliveries.

Sophie Ecclestone led the bowling attack for England with 3/22 while Bell made one scalp.

Bavuma century sets up series win for South Africa

BLOEMFONTEIN: South African captain Temba Bavuma hit a century to lead his team to a series-clinching five-wicket win in the second one-day international against England at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

Bavuma hit 109 as South Africa chased down an England total of 342 for seven, winning with five balls to spare.

Bavuma battled cramps shortly before reaching his hundred. With his score on 96 there was a lengthy break while he received treatment. He reacted in emotional fashion when he hit the next ball from Adil Rashid through the covers for four.

He thumped his chest and pointed to his name on the back of his shirt. He was the only member of the South African team not signed up for the country’s new Twenty20 league and his place in the national white-ball teams had been questioned because of a perceived inability to score at the rapid rate required in modern limited overs cricket.

But he was in outstanding form on Sunday as he spearheaded South Africa’s third-highest successful run chase, facing only 102 balls and hitting 14 fours and a six.

“It was very special,” said Bavuma. “It was very enjoyable. I managed to hit a few out of the middle.”

Bavuma said it was a confidence-boosting performance from his team, who have yet to qualify automatically for the World Cup later this year. “We knew we had to come out and play. We played the conditions, which were good for batting.”

Bavuma sent England in to bat, reasoning correctly that there could be early life in the pitch. England struggled initially, losing both openers inside the first seven overs, but prospered as batting conditions eased.

Harry Brook, playing in his second one-day international after being dismissed for nought in the first match on Friday, made 80 off 75 balls. Captain Jos Buttler hit an unbeaten 94 off 82 deliveries.

Moeen Ali was also in fine form for England, hitting 51 off 45 balls and sharing a fifth wicket stand of 106 with Buttler.

There was a brief lull after Ali’s dismissal but England scored 60 runs off the last four overs, with Sam Curran hitting three sixes in scoring 28.

“We didn’t expect the ball to swing as much as it did at the start but to come back and post 340 was a fantastic effort,” said Buttler. “It was a brilliant game of cricket and a great chase by South Africa.”

Bavuma and Quinton de Kock made a fast start, putting on 77 for the first wicket in 12 overs. All the South African batsmen made contributions and the hosts were always up with or close to the required rate. David Miller hit 58 not out off 37 balls and finished the match with a six off Chris Woakes.

Fast and furious South Africa triumph as England collapse

BLOEMFONTEIN: Fast bowlers Sisanda Magala, Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada earned South Africa a dramatic 27-run win in the first one-day international against England at the Mangaung Oval on Friday.

England seemed headed for a comfortable win as Jason Roy and Dawid Malan put on 146 for the first wicket inside the first 20 overs of England’s reply to South Africa’s 298 for seven.

Roy went on to score a thrilling 113 off 91 balls but the rest of the batting collapsed.

Magala made the crucial breakthrough when Malan mistimed an attempted pull against a short-pitched ball and was caught for 59.

He followed up by trapping debutant Harry Brook leg before wicket for nought.

Magala took three for 46 and was named man of the match, while Nortje (four for 62) and Rabada (two for 46) were irresistible as the match reached a climax.

Five of the wickets fell to short-pitched bowling.

“The pitch was a bit two-paced and it made the bouncers effective,” said Magala.

England captain Jos Buttler said he was disappointed that his side had not maintained the aggressive intent shown by Roy and Malan.

“South Africa came back really well but I thought we could have kept trying to take it on and put pressure on them,” he said.

Although he finished on the losing side, Roy gave an emphatic answer to critics who have questioned his place in the team after a poor run of form since he helped England win the World Cup in 2019.

He had made only one century since the World Cup, against second-tier Netherlands, and his previous eight innings had yielded only 160 runs with a highest score of 43.

But Roy was in dominant form from the start of his innings, reaching his fifty off 45 balls and his century off 79 deliveries. He hit 11 fours and four sixes.

Rassie van der Dussen hit a contrasting century to enable South Africa to post a challenging total.

Van der Dussen made 111 off 117 balls, hitting only six boundaries.

He held the innings together as England’s bowlers came back strongly after an opening stand of 61 off 52 balls between Quinton de Kock and captain Temba Bavuma.

England fast bowler Jofra Archer was expensive in his first one-day international since September 2020, taking one for 81 in ten overs.

But the rest of the England bowlers made the batsmen work hard for their runs on a slow pitch.

South Africa’s total was only 12 runs higher than the average first innings total on a ground known for high scoring.

Left-armer Sam Curran took three for 35 in nine overs, mixing up his pace and making good use of the bouncer –- a formula which later worked well for the South Africans.

The three-match series is part of the World Cup Super League and the win was a boost for South Africa, who have yet to earn automatic qualification for the World Cup in India later this year.

Bavuma said South Africa had gone into the series determined to play good cricket, whether or not they qualified for the World Cup.

“We’re happy with the way we went about our business but obviously we need the points,” he said.

Archer to mark international return in first South Africa ODI

BLOEMFONTEIN: England’s right-arm pacer Jofra Archer will make his international return since March 2021 in the first ODI of the three-match away series against South Africa on Friday (January 27).

According to the details, Archer, who was out of action since March 2021 due to prolonged injuries, has now been named in the Playing XI for the first ODI against South Africa.

England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler confirmed Archer’s return and stated that he will get better and better as he comes back.

“It’s great to have Jofra back, fit and playing cricket again,” said England captain Jos Buttler. “I think I speak on behalf of everyone – he’s such an exciting guy to have back on the field.

“As an England captain, to have him in the team is brilliant. I’m sure he’ll get better and better as he comes back.

“There’s no expectation from my side on Jofra. He will come back and perform brilliantly because that is what he is able to do.

“He’s coming back after a long time. The intensity in international cricket is different and he has had some significant injuries. It would be naïve to think it wouldn’t take him a little bit of time to get up to 100%. It’s just fantastic to see him fit and back playing again.”

It is worth mentioning that the three-match series between England and South Africa will take place on January 27, 29 and February 1.

South Africa thrash England as ‘Bazball’ era comes back down to earth

LONDON: South Africa inflicted England’s first defeat of the ‘Bazball’ era as they won the first Test by crushing innings and 12 runs with more than two days to spare at Lord’s on Friday.

England were dismissed for 149 in their second innings before tea on the third day, with the Proteas effectively winning the game in six sessions after most of Wednesday’s first day was lost to rain.

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj struck twice before fast bowler Anrich Nortje followed up with a superb spell of three wickets for no runs in 10 balls as the visitors, leaders of the World Test Championship table, took a 1-0 lead in a three-match series.

England had won all four of their previous Tests under the new leadership of captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, after whom ‘Bazball’ is named.

Each of those wins, however, came after batting aggressively in the fourth innings, rather than having to set a total and before this match, South Africa captain Dean Elgar questioned whether a policy of all-out attack would work against his formidable bowling line-up.

But although former captain Andrew Strauss said England had folded like a “deck of cards” it wasn’t until Stokes joined forces with Stuart Broad, who hooked Nortje for six, during a seventh-wicket stand of 55 that they batted in ‘Bazball’ style.

England’s top order were simply overpowered on a sunny day during an innings that lasted just three hours and was finished inside 38 overs.

Bowlers star as England crush South Africa in a rain-affected second ODI

MANCHESTER: England bowlers wreaked havoc over the South African batting line-up after the batters put on a decent 201 in the allotted 29 overs in a rain-affected second ODI of the three-match series.

After a frustrating home series defeat against India and the first-match loss against South Africa, Jos Buttler XI found a moment to cherish as the hosts completed a resounding victory over the Proteas in the second ODI to level the three-match series 1-1.

In the second ODI, reduced to 29 overs per side after a two-hour and 45 minute delay because of the persistent rain, the touring side captain Keshav Maharaj won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first.

Batting first, England batters displayed a combined effort as they posted 201 runs on the board in 29 overs.

Right-handed explosive batter Liam Livingstone and all-rounder Sam Curran remained the significant contributors as they scored 38 and 35 respectively. Livingstone top-scored for the side and faced 26 deliveries in his important knock, laced with a boundary and three sixes.

Curran, on the other hand, followed back with a blistering knock down the order as he scored a quickfire 35 off a mere 18 balls including two boundaries and three sixes.

For South Africa, Dwaine Pretorius led the way with four wickets, while Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi bagged two each. Skipper Maharaj, on the other hand, made one scalp.

In the run chase, England bowlers dominated the touring batting line-up completely as they bundled out the latter for a mere 83 runs to aid in their side’s resounding 118-run victory.

Henrich Klaasen fought hard with a gritty knock of 33 runs while the rest of the batters remained clueless against the English bowling attack as eight of them could not even get into the double-figures.

For England, Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed three wickets for 29 runs, while Moeen Ali and Reece Topley claimed two wickets each. David Willey and Curran, on the other hand, struck out a batter each.
