Seifert’s 82 trumps Hasaranga’s fifty as Galle Marvels beat Kandy Falcons

DAMBULLA: Wanindu Hasaranga’s explosive half-century went in vain as Tim Seifert played a dominant 82-run knock to help Galle Marvels defeat Kandy Falcons in the ninth match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Sunday.

Set to chase 176, Galle Marvels steered to victory in 17.1 overs with a loss of four wickets courtesy of Seifert’s unbeaten half-century.

Niroshan Dickwella set the tone with three boundaries in the first over, however, he fell on the last ball of the over.

Alex Hales was joined by Seifert and together they attacked the Falcons’ bowlers, constructing a 79-run stand for the second wicket in just 34 balls.

Hasaranga broke the partnership in the seventh over when he enticed Hales to attempt a slog sweep, only to get caught by Pavan Rathnayake at deep mid-wicket.

Hales played a quick 38-run cameo off 19 balls with four boundaries and three sixes.

Seifert continued his onslaught as he got involved in a brief 38-run partnership with Bhanuka Rajapaksa (16) before Shoriful Islam castled the latter.

Janith Liyanage (11) struck two boundaries off Lakshan Sandakan, however, he got stumped while going for the third one.

Sahan Arachchige (9) joined Seifert and they safely steered Marvels to their third victory in the LPL 2024 with an unbeaten partnership of 29 runs.

Seifert finished with an unbeaten 82 off 49, with the help of 13 boundaries, including two sixes.

Shoriful Islam led the bowling attack with two wickets, aided by Hasaranga and Sandakan, who bagged one each.

Galle Marvels’ captain Niroshan Dickwella invited Kandy Falcons to bat first and the bowlers proved the decision right by taking four wickets in quick succession with 32 runs on the board.

Opening batter Andre Fletcher, who remained unfazed amid falling wickets, partnered with Angelo Mathews (25) to add 45 runs for the fifth wicket.

Fletcher scored a 36-ball 50 with four boundaries and two sixes before falling prey to Maheesh Theekshana.

Wanindu Hasaranga then played a blistering cameo to push his team’s total to 175-7 in their allocated 20 overs.

The all-rounder scored an unbeaten 65 from 32 balls, laced with seven boundaries and three sixes.

For Galle Marvels, Isuru Udana claimed three wickets, while Zahoor Khan picked two.

Seifert’s ton goes in vain as Jaffna Kings ease past Galle Marvels

DAMBULLA: Azmatullah Omarzai backed his two wickets with a match-winning cameo and powered Jaffna Kings to a five-wicket victory over Galle Marvels in the sixth match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 here on Friday.

The Kings, while chasing a daunting 188-run target, were in a state of bother when their set-batter Rilee Rossouw perished in the 17th over with his side still requiring 46 off 21 deliveries.

The Marvels were sensing a comeback with Rossouw’s breakthrough but Omarzai, who came out to bat at No.7, denied them any chance to crawl their way back with belligerent hitting.

The right-handed batter smashed four fours and two sixes on his way to an unbeaten 35 off 13 deliveries and took the Kings home with two balls to spare.

He added an unbeaten 49 runs for the sixth wicket with skipper Charith Assalanka, who made 14 not out from eight balls.

Earlier, Rilee Rossouw, who came out to bat after three overs, played a pivotal role in the successful pursuit with a well-crafted half-century.

He top-scored for the Kings with an anchoring 67. His 42-ball featured eight fours and three sixes.

Opening batter Kusal Mendis also made a notable contribution for the Kings with a quick 30 up the order.

Zahoor Khan was the standout bowler for the Marvels with two wickets for just 33 runs in his quota of four overs.

Put into bat first, the Marvels registered a massive total of 187/5 on the board in their allotted overs.

Leading the way was right-handed batter Tim Seifert, who dominated the Kings bowlers and struck a magnificent century.

The New Zealand international smashed 12 fours and six sixes to score 104 off just 63 deliveries and carried his bat all the way through.

Besides him, Bhanuka Rajapaksa (28) and Alex Hales (23) made significant contributions.

Azmatullah Omarzai was the pick of the bowlers for Jaffna Kings with 2/33 in his four overs, followed by Pramod Madushan and Fabian Allen, who chipped in with a wicket apiece.

The five-wicket victory powered Jaffna Kings to the top of the LPL 2024 standings with four points in three matches while Galle Marvels remained second with the same record but an inferior net run rate.

Karachi Kings’ Tim Seifert eyes top-four finish in PSL 9

KARACHI: Home side Karachi Kings’ wicketkeeper batter Tim Seifert on Thursday, asserted that the team is confident and is focused on finishing the group stage of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 in the top four.

Seifert addressed the post-match press conference after Karachi Kings’ narrow five-wicket defeat against Quetta Gladiators and stated that winning or losing is part of the game but his team’s prime goal is the top-four finish.

“In this tournament, we had some close games. And obviously, we get a bit of a break now, a few trainings which would be good for the lads. But looking at the table, we are still very much in the tournament,” said Seifert.

“And that is cricket, [especially] T20 cricket, sometimes it does come down to the last ball and there has to be a winner or a loser. So, unfortunately, we are on the wrong side.

“But boys are still very confident and we’re still in the running to make the top four which is the main thing.”

Tim Seifert further praised Sherfane Rutherford’s brilliance with the bat which lifted the Gladiators to snatch a narrow victory from the Kings but at the same time acknowledged that the Kings’ bowlers made a few mistakes in execution.

“They hit the ball very cleanly but I think at the same time we probably didn’t quite execute to them. Potentially gave them too many balls that they could hit for a six.

“And, you know close games like that, it does come down to one ball. I think, yeah, it was one of those games, where we were on top and then they came back.

“But, obviously, you take the hat off, they hit the ball very cleanly.”

Tim Seifert further opened up about the different conditions but asserted that he now has a good understanding of the wickets and foresees a big score for Karachi Kings in the coming matches.

“Yeah, a bit different from back home in New Zealand, the wickets. But, I’ve played enough around the world like India and CPL [West Indies] which have similar conditions.

“But yeah, it always takes a little bit of time to adjust and now two games here for myself. So, now I have a good understanding of the wickets and hopefully going forward I can put up a big score on the board.

LPL: Tim Seifert goes berserk at B-Love Kandy as Galle Titans prevail

COLOMBO: Tim Seifert’s quickfire 74-run knock led Galle Titans to a thumping 83-run victory over B-Love Kandy in the fifth match of the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023.

Opting to bat first, Galle Titans piled up a massive total of 180/5 on the board with Seifert leading the charge with a brisk half-century.

The Titans got off to a cautious start to their innings as they were 50/2 in 8.3 Overs when Seifert walked out into the middle.

The wicketkeeper batter turned the game on its head with belligerent hitting and put his side in command with a brilliant 95-run partnership with Shakib Al Hasan.

Seifert dominated the opposition bowlers with belligerent hitting while Shakib held his ground firm with a sensible 21-ball 30 before a brilliant effort in the deep by Thanuka Dabare saw the end of his sensible knock.

Tim Seifert soon followed Shakib back to the dugout in the next over as Mohammad Hasnain’s short-pitched delivery got the better of him.

He smashed five boundaries and as many sixes on his way to a 39-ball 74.

Following his departure, skipper Dasun Shanaka and Lahiru Samarakoon gave final touches to the Titans’ batting expedition as they added 15 runs off the last nine deliveries.

For B-Love Kandy, Mohammad Hasnain, Wanindu Hasaranga and Aamer Jamal could pick up a wicket.

B-Love Kandy’s batters put on a dismal show in response to the Titans’ 181 and bundled out for a paltry 97.

Middle-order batter Ashen Bandara offered brief retaliation against a dominant Titans’ bowling attack with a 19-ball 27 which included two boundaries.

The next best scores for B-Love Kandy were Isuru Udana (16) and Thaunka Dabare (12) while the rest failed to make it into the double digits.

With a thumping 83-run victory, Galle Titans skyrocketed to the top of the LPL standings with four points in two matches while B-Love Kandy sank to the bottom.

Seifert blasts New Zealand to T20 series win over Sri Lanka

QUEENSTOWN: Tim Seifert was the match-winner for the second straight game as New Zealand clinched the T20 series against Sri Lanka with a tense four-wicket victory in Queenstown on Saturday.

Seifert blasted a career-high 88 off 48 balls to fire the Black Caps to 183-6 from 19.5 overs after the tourists had posted 182-6 in the third and final game at John Davies Oval.

The opener struck 10 fours and three sixes in an innings that bore many of the hallmarks of his unbeaten 79 when New Zealand levelled the series at Dunedin on Wednesday.

Captain Tom Latham provided the only meaningful support with 31 off 23 and New Zealand’s middle order nearly conspired to lose the game after Seifert departed with four overs remaining.

Needing to score at little more than a run-a-ball at that stage, the Black Caps stuttered.

Needing 10 runs to win off the final over bowled by Lahiru Kumara (3-38), Mark Chapman struck a six off the first ball before he was the first of three New Zealand wickets to fall.

With two still needed off the last two deliveries, Rachin Ravindra held his nerve to find a gap in the outfield and secure the 2-1 series win.

Latham conceded the run chase should not have become so tight at the death.

“They put us under pressure so it was good to see the way the guys responded to that,” Latham said.

“The way Timmy Seifert went out there and played was really important but obviously it wasn’t ideal going down to the last couple of balls.

“I’d say we always had it under control though.”

It completes a disappointing tour for Sri Lanka, who lost the Test and ODI series by the same 2-0 scoreline but were more competitive in the shortest format.

Captain Dasun Shanaka said his team adjusted gradually to New Zealand conditions and suggested Sri Lankan cricket officials should take careful note.

“I think it’s about preparation. We should make sure when we come here again, we should come at least two weeks, three weeks before we play,” Shanaka said.

“Once we got into the T20 series we started looking a different team.”

Sri Lanka gave themselves a shot at victory after Kusal Mendis struck a rapid 73 off 48 balls, taking full advantage after being dropped by Daryl Mitchell at slip when on 10.

The opener-wicketkeeper went on to hit six fours and five sixes in his 12th half-century, falling just short of his career-high score of 79.

Having been asked to bat, Mendis was the dominant figure in an opening stand of 76 with Pathum Nissanka (25 off 25), before putting on a further 46 with Kusal Perera (33 off 21).

Wickets fell rapidly over the closing overs, preventing the tourists from going close to 200.

Seifert has not been included in New Zealand’s squad for the white ball tour of Pakistan beginning on Friday as he is expecting the arrival of his first child.

Sri Lanka’s next assignment is a two-Test home series against Ireland, beginning on April 16.
