Dhawan to lead India in West Indies ODIs, Jadeja named as deputy

NEW DELHI: India’s left-handed opening batter Shikhar Dhawan has been named as the ODI captain for the forthcoming tour of the West Indies, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, on the other hand, has been named the vice-captain.

The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has put faith in young players for the upcoming task against West Indies as designated captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, and Mohammed Shami have all been given rest for the three-match series.

Dhawan will be leading the Men in Blue for the second time in ODIs after the limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka in 2021.

The 16-member Indian squad marked the comeback of right-handed batter Shubman Gill, who last played an ODI for India in 2020. Sanju Samson, on the other hand, will be making his comeback after a year.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Avesh Khan, and Deepak Hooda, on the other hand, have also been included in the squad after being left out of the ODI squad in England.

India’s designated vice-captain KL Rahul was not considered for selection as he recently underwent surgery for a sports hernia.

It is pertinent to mention here that India will be touring West Indies later this month and will contest in three ODIs and five T20Is. The BCCI will announce the T20I squad in a due course.

Women’s WC: Mandhana, Kaur hit centuries as India thump West Indies

HAMILTON: Indian batters Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur scored stunning centuries before the combined bowling show powered the side to a massive 155-runs victory over West Indies in the 10th match of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup, here on Saturday.

Set to chase a mammoth 318, the West Indian batting line-up failed completely and could only manage to score 162 before being bowled out in the 44th over.

The side had a flying start to their run chase as the openers – Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews – provided a solid foundation with a century stand for the first wicket in just 12 overs.

Deandra, who was scoring runs at a rapid pace fell short in the 13th over after scoring her half-century. The right-handed batter scored 62 off 46 balls with the help of 10 boundaries and a six.

Following her departure, the side then ran into a match-defining collapse as the side slipped from 100/0 to 114/4 within six overs. The side’s set batter Matthews also perished after scoring 43 off 36 deliveries, laced with six boundaries.

The side kept losing wickets after Matthews’s departure and in the end, was bundled out for 162 in the 41st over as none of their batters managed to be resilient in front of the Indian bowling attack.

For India, Sneh Rana starred with her three wickets, while Meghna Singh bagged two. Jhulan Goswami, Pooja Vastrakar, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

Batting first, India managed to amass a massive total of 317/8, thanks to the brilliant centuries from Mandhana and Kaur.

Mandhana played an anchored knock of 123 runs off 119 balls and carried her bat till the 42nd over. She kept the scoreboard ticking while the side lost three wickets for 78. Mandhana then put on a magnificent 194-runs partnership with Kaur to bolster the side to a massive total.

Kaur, on the other hand, scored 109 off 107 balls; smashing 10 boundaries and two sixes. The right-handed batter carried her bat till the second last over and played a vital role in amassing a massive total to her side after Mandhana’s dismissal.

For West Indies, Anisa Mohammed claimed two wickets, while Matthews, Shakera Selman, Deandra, and Aaliya Alleyne struck out a batter each.

Rohit, Ishan set tone for India to beat West Indies in opening T20I

KOLKATA: Openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan set the tone for India to chase down 158 runs against West Indies to win the first T20I of three-match series here on Wednesday.

Set to chase, Indian openers scored 64 runs together. Rohit scored 40 including three sixes and four boundaries. Whereas, Ishan made 35 with the help of four boundaries.

In the end, Suryakumar Yadav (34*) and Venkatesh Iyer (24*) finished the chase for India in 18.5 overs. Yadav struck five boundaries and a six while Iyer smashed six and two boundaries.

For West Indies, Roston Chase bagged two wickets while Sheldon Cottrell and Fabian Allen shared a wicket apiece.

Earlier, Nicholas Pooran scored 61 laced with five sixes and four boundaries to drive West Indies to 157-7. Kyle Mayers, with the help of seven boundaries, scored 31.

Harshal Patel and Ravi Bishnoi bagged two wickets each for India.

Bowlers propel India to whitewash West Indies in the ODI series

AHMEDABAD: Indian pacers – Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj starred with the ball to help India complete whitewash against West Indies in the ODI series here on Friday.

Set to chase 266, the West Indian batting line-up failed and could only score 169 in response. The touring side had a poor start to the run-chase; losing their first three wickets for 25 runs.

The skipper – Nicholas Pooran looked to retaliate a bit; scoring a gritty 34 off 39 balls but with no support from the other end, he too failed to put his side into a comfortable position.

Following his departure, Alzarri Joseph and Odean Smith looked to fight back and recorded an important 40-runs partnership for the eighth wicket. The pair looked determined before Smith departed after top-scoring with 36.

Soon after, the side lost their remaining wickets in a rush and in the end, was bowled out for a skimpy 169; handing an easy 96-runs victory to the home side.

For India, Krishna and Siraj bagged three wickets each, while Deepak Chahar and Kuldeep Yadav each claimed two wickets.

Batting first, India too had a similar start to their innings; losing their first three wickets for a mere 42 as the captain – Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli dismissed cheaply.

Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant then anchored the innings with a brilliant 110-runs partnership for the fourth wicket. Both the batters batted sensibly and scored half-centuries.

Pant, who was scoring quicker perished soon after reaching his half-century in the 30th over. He scored 56 off 54 balls, laced with six boundaries and a six.

Iyer, on the other hand, stood firm and kept the scoreboard while his side lost two quick wickets of Pant and Suryakumar Yadav. He top-scored with a brilliant 80 off 111 deliveries; smashing nine boundaries.

Washington Sundar and Deepak Chahar then strengthened the home side’s position by chipping in with crucial runs at the death. Sundar scored 34, while Chahar made a run-ball 38.

Following their brilliance, the men in blue bowled out for 265 on the last delivery of the innings.

Jason Holder was the pick of the bowlers for the touring side; picking four wickets, while Joseph and Hayden Walsh claimed two wickets each. Smith and Fabien Allen, on the other hand, struck out a batter each.

India beat West Indies by 44 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead

AHMEDABAD: Indian pacer Prasidh Krishna starred with the ball; taking four wickets as the home side defeated West Indies by 44 runs in the second ODI to take an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Set to chase 238, the West Indian batting line-up fell short of 44 runs as the Indian bowling attack – led by Krishna destroyed the touring side’s batting line-up; dismissing them for a paltry 193.

The touring side after having a poor start kept losing wickets at a consistent rate as none of their batters could make an impact with the bat. Shamarh Brooks and Akeal Hosein, on the other hand, resisted a bit but they too could not steer their side to the triumph.

Hosein scored a gritty 34 off 52 balls down the order, while Brooks top-scored with 44 off 64 deliveries; smashing two boundaries and as many sixes.

Following their departure, the side was soon bundled out for 193 in 46 overs; handing a comfortable 44-runs victory to the home side.

For India, Krishna bagged four wickets, while Shardul Thakur claimed two. Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, and Deepak Hooda made one scalp each.

Batting first, India finished at a decent 237/9 in the first innings, following Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliant half-century.

The home side was off to a similar start to the West Indies; losing three quick wickets with just 43 runs on the board as the skipper Rohit Sharma departed after scoring five, while Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant could only score 18 each.

KL Rahul then alongside Yadav anchored the innings and recorded a magnificent 89-runs partnership. The pair appeared solid before Rahul departed after missing on his well-deserved half-century. The right-handed batter scored 49 off 48 balls, laced with four boundaries and two sixes.

Soon after, Yadav also walked back to the pavilion in the 39th over. He scored an astonishing 64 off 83 balls; smashing five boundaries. The home side again ran into a collapse following his departure and was restricted to 237/9 in the allotted 50 overs.

For West Indies, Odean Smith, Alzari Joseph, and Kemar Roach took two wickets each, while Jason Holder, Hosein, and Fabian Allen struck out a batter each.

India thump West Indies by six wickets in the first ODI

AHMEDABAD: India outclassed West Indies in the first ODI of their ongoing series; defeating the latter by six wickets to lead the series 1-0, here on Sunday.

India secured a convincing victory in their 1000th ODI, the home side chased down a skimpy 177 in 28 overs after the bowlers bowled out the touring side for a mere 176.

Set to chase 177, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan provided a solid start; recording an 84-runs partnership for the second wicket before Rohit departed after scoring a brilliant half-century. He scored a quick 60 off 51 balls, laced with 10 boundaries and a six.

Following his dismissal, the side lost three wickets in quick succession and was slipped from 84-1 to 116-4. Ishan also walked back to the pavilion after scoring 28, while Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant could only score eight and 11 respectively.

Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda then anchored the run chase with an unbeaten 72-runs partnership and guided the side over the line. Yadav scored 34 off 36 balls, laced with five boundaries, while Hooda scored 26 off 32 deliveries.

For the West Indies, Alzarri Joseph bagged two wickets, while Akeal Hosein managed to make one scalp.

Batting first, the West Indian batting line-up failed completely and could only manage to score 177 before being bowled out. Jason Holder resisted a bit with his gritty knock of 57 runs. He faced 71 deliveries and smashed four sixes.

Later, Fabien Allen also contributed with his 29, while could not guide his side to a commendable total as the West Indies was bowled out for 177 in the 44th over.

For India, Yuzvendra Chahal starred with the ball; taking four wickets, while Washington Sundar claimed three. Prasidh Krishna and Muhammad Siraj took two and a wicket each.
