‘Too shy to seek advice’: Former Pakistan legend comments on Babar Azam’s struggles

Former Pakistan legend Zaheer Abbas has shed light on ace batter Babar Azam’s dip in form, suggesting that he is too shy to ask senior players for advice.

Zaheer, also known as Asian Bradman, pinpointed Babar Azam’s struggles, stressing the need for advice from seniors to regain his form.

“I think either Babar has an ego issue or is too shy to seek advice from his seniors in overcoming his current situation,” Zaheer said.

Zaheer Abbas recalled Muhammad Azharuddin’s advice to Pakistan’s top run-getter in Tests, Younis Khan, who was struggling for runs in 2016.

“I think in 2016 Younis Khan spoke to Muhammad Azharuddin and went on to score a double hundred in England, ” he said.

The 77-year-old emphasized that past generations’ players would reach out to each other during tough times.

“I also recall how Azharuddin had sought guidance from me on India’s tour to Pakistan in 1989-90. He was struggling to find runs, and I told him to change his batting grip. Saeed Anwar sought Sunil Gavaskar’s advice,” he added.
The Sialkot-born player identified a technical flaw in Babar Azam’s batting, noting that his stance is slightly closer than usual, which is limiting him ability to adjust to the pace of the ball.
“Babar’s stance at the crease is a rather close one today compared to a more open stance before, and he has little time to adjust himself to the pace of the ball. I think because of this, he is struggling to time his shots and is getting out early,” he observed.
It is worth noting that Babar Azam has been struggling with his form recently. The right-handed batsman had a disappointing start to the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he scored a duck and just one run in the opening two matches.

Zaheer Abbas demands Babar Azam’s exclusion from Pakistan squad

Legendary Pakistan batter Zaheer Abbas has criticised national white-ball captain Babar Azam over his recent form and demanded his removal from the squad.

Babar has been under tight scrutiny due to his below-par performances recently, the highlight of which was his dismal run in the two-match home Test series against Bangladesh.

He crashed out of the top ten list in the ICC Test Batting Rankings after a forgettable home series against Bangladesh, where he managed 64 runs in four innings.

He last crossed the 50-run mark in red-ball cricket back in December 2022 against New Zealand with a marathon 161-run knock. Since then, he has played 16 innings with a highest score of 39 against Sri Lanka in July 2023.

Zaheer Abbas, during an appearance on a sports talk show in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), questioned his place in the team owing to his dismal performances.

“Babar Azam should be dropped from the team,” Abbas said. “If he’s not scoring runs, because if he’s our main batsman and he’s out of form, he should be out of the team.”

However, Pakistan’s team management has shown faith in the star batter and backed him for the upcoming Test series against England, starting from 7 October in Multan.

Pakistan squad for first Test against England: Shan Masood (captain), Saud Shakeel (vice-captain), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Huraira, Mohammad Rizwan (wicket-keeper), Naseem Shah, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wicket-keeper), and Shaheen Shah Afridi, Zahid Mehmood.

Pakistan legend calls Babar Azam-Virat Kohli comparison ‘pointless’

Legendary Pakistan batter Zaheer Abbas has voiced his displeasure over the comparison between star batter Babar Azam and Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli.

Babar and Virat are often compared across the cricket fraternity over their similar technical aspect, however, Zaheer Abbas called these comparisons pointless.

The Asian Bradman, during an appearance on a sports talk show in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), highlighted the current form of both players, hinting at Babar’s recent struggles.

“The comparisons are pointless, Virat Kohli scores in every match, the other player [Babar Azam] doesn’t score in any match, so then how can you compare? The person who scores, he is the bigger player,” he said.

It’s worth noting that Virat has been in good form recently, having led India to their second T20 World Cup title with a gutsy half-century in the final against South Africa in June.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur, he surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest to amass 27000 runs in international cricket.

On the other hand, Babar has been under tight scrutiny due to his below-par performances recently, the highlight of which was his dismal run in the two-match home Test series against Bangladesh.

He crashed out of the top ten list in the ICC Test Batting Rankings after a forgettable home series against Bangladesh, where he managed 64 runs in four innings.

“I feel humbled to have been recognised in such a respectful and honourable manner by my parent organisation at my home ground, during play of my favourite format of the game and in front of passionate cricket fans, who have also played an integral part throughout my cricketing career,” the statement read.

“It has been a privilege to have represented Pakistan for nearly two decades and contribute [to] the national side’s growth in terms of stature and reputation. It was a delight to play with and against some of the all-time greats in an era when cricket regulations and playing conditions were not as stringent as today. Of course, the opportunities were also limited as compared to today, but the rewards, appreciation and acknowledgement [were] always extremely high and satisfying,” he was quoted saying.

The former batting great also stated that he is pleased to see a full-strength Australian side playing at the National Stadium after a massive gap of 24 years.

Taking to Twitter, the PCB shared the picture of Faisal presenting the commemorative cap and plaque to Zaheer.

It is pertinent to mention here that after Colin Cowdrey and Sir Clyde Walcott, Zaheer was just the third former cricketer to become an ICC President.
