All-round Mehidy Hasan Miraz powers Bangladesh to victory over Afghanistan

DHARAMSALA: Bangladesh kicked off their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign with a thumping six-wicket victory over Afghanistan, courtesy of an all-round performance by Mehidy Hasan Miraz here on Saturday.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz returned with figures of 3-25 in the first innings to help his side bundle Afghanistan for a meagre 156. He then scored a gusty 57 off 73 during Bangladesh’s pursuit of the target.

Set to chase 157, Bangladesh started the innings with two early wickets inside seven overs at a total of 27.

Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto then knitted an anchoring 97-run partnership off 129 to put Bangladesh in a comfortable position until Afghanistan struck to send Miraz back and cause a stir in the run chase.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan joined Shanto on the crease but was soon back to the pavilion after adding 14 runs to the total.

Najmul Hossain Shanto stayed at the crease and steered his team to the win, with back-to-back boundaries in the 35th over. He scored an unbeaten 59 runs off 83 balls, with the help of three boundaries and a six.

Fazalhaq Farooqi, Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai managed one wicket each for Afghanistan.

Earlier in the first innings, Afghanistan had a decent start with opening batters putting up 47 runs on board within nine overs after being put into bat by Bangladesh’s skipper.

They lost their first wicket when Ibrahim Zadran (22) attempted to sweep Shakib Al Hasan but a top edge flew to Tanzid Hasan.

Rahmat Shah and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 18 each to support a settled Rahmanullah Gurbaz on the other end and drag the total to 112-2 before Bangladeshi bowlers wreaked havoc with two wickets in five balls.

Shahidi fell while trying to slog but the ball ballooned up and landed in the hands of Towhid Hridoy, while Gurbaz mishit a slower ball from Mustafizur Rahman, which was caught by Tanzid Hasan in the deep.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 47 runs off 62 balls, with the help of four boundaries and one six.

Afghanistan team could not recover from it as their wickets kept tumbling at an alarming rate and bundled out at a meagre 156 in 37.2 overs.

They only managed to add 44 runs for the last six wickets, including a brief 24 runs partnership for the seventh wicket between Rashid Khan (9) and Azmatullah Omarzai (22). The latter was the only batter to reach double figures among the last seven batters.

Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked three wickets each, while Shoriful Islam grabbed two.

Bangladesh crush Afghanistan to keep Asia Cup 2023 hopes alive

LAHORE: Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto’s centuries, followed by Taskin Ahmed’s four-fer led Bangladesh to a crushing 89-run victory over Afghanistan in the fourth match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023.

Set to chase a mammoth 335, Afghanistan could raise 245 before being bundled out in the 46th over despite Ibrahim Zadran and Hashmatullah Shahidi’s half-centuries.

Afghanistan had a dismal start to their pursuit as they lost their in-form opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz (1) with just one run on the board.

Following an early slump, Rahmat Shah and Ibrahim Zadran anchored the run chase as they put on a sensible 78-run partnership for the second wicket until Taskin Ahmed castled the former.

Rahmat scored 33 off 57 deliveries, hitting five boundaries.

Ibrahim was then joined by his captain Shahidi and the pair put together a 52-run stand before young pacer Hasan Mahmud removed the set batter.

Ibrahim remained the top-scorer for Afghanistan in their first Asia Cup 2023 fixture with a 74-ball 75 which featured 10 boundaries and a six.

Shahidi was then involved in another crucial partnership for his side when he added 62 runs for the fourth wicket with Najibullah Zadran.

The pair had kept Afghanistan in the hunt before both perished in successive overs to leave their side reeling at 196/5 in 38 overs.

Zadran could score 17 off 25 while Shahidi scored a 60-ball 51, laced with six boundaries.

Following their departure, Afghanistan’s batting lineup crumbled and they were eventually bundled out for 245.

Meanwhile, Rashid Khan launched a brief counterattack on Bangladesh’s bowlers with a brisk 24-run cameo but was undone by Taskin Ahmed.

Taskin led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with 4/44, followed by Shoriful Islam’s 3/36 while Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz made one scalp each.

Batting first, Bangladesh raised a mammoth 334/5 in the allotted 50 overs at the back of sensational centuries by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Bangladesh batters justified their captain Shakib Al Hasan’s decision of batting first after the coin flipped in his favour as they dominated the spin-packed Afghanistan bowling attack to put a massive total on the board.

Bangladesh openers Mohammad Naim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz laid a solid foundation with a brilliant 60-run partnership.

The pair scored at a brisk rate and frustrated Afghan bowlers Mujeeb Ur Rahman got rid of Naim in the 10th over. He could score 28 off 32 deliveries, hitting five boundaries.

Afghanistan then had another success in the next over when Gulbadin Naib Towhid Hridoy for a two-ball duck.

Following the back-to-back blows, Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Miraz at the crease and the pair launched an astounding recovery.

Miraz and Shanto cut Afghanistan’s comeback in their first Asia Cup 2023 fixture short as they knitted a magnificent 194-run partnership for the third wicket.

Both batters had settled down with Miraz amassing his second ODI century but soon retired out after sustaining a blow to his hand.

He remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with 119-ball 112 which featured seven boundaries and three sixes.

Following his departure, Shanto put on a brief partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim and perished soon after bringing up his century.

He scored 104 off 105 deliveries, laced up with nine boundaries and two sixes.

With Bangladesh’s both mainstays back in the hut, their captain Shakib Al Hasan and wicketkeeper batter Rahim bolstered the total at the death with brisk cameos.

Rahim scored 25 from 15 deliveries with the help of one boundary and a six while Shakib scored an unbeaten 32 off 18, smashing four boundaries and a six.

For Afghanistan, only Gulbadin Naib and Mujeeb Ur Rahman could pick up a wicket.

Bangladesh avoid Janat hat-trick scare to edge Afghanistan

SYLHET: Karim Janat claimed a hat-trick in the final over of the run chase but Bangladesh kept their nerves calm to claim a thrilling two-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the first T20I on Friday.

Bangladesh needed just six runs off the final over with five wickets in hand and were clear favourites for a comfortable victory in the T20I series opener against Afghanistan.

However, Karim Janat, who conceded a boundary on the first delivery, hit back to remove Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed and Nasum Ahmed on consecutive deliveries, leaving the hosts requiring two runs in as many deliveries.

Shoriful Islam, coming at number 10, displayed nerves of steel to hit Janat for a boundary which sealed a dramatic victory for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s top-scorer in the run chase Towhid Hridoy remained unbeaten on 47. He conceded 32 deliveries and hit three boundaries and two sixes.

Hridoy’s fifth-wicket partnership with Shamim Hossain (33) had Bangladesh cruising for an easy victory before Rashid Khan removed the latter in the 18th over to force a late twist.

Afghanistan’s hat-trick star Karim Janat returned 3/15 while Rashid Khan, Fareed Ahmad, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Fazalhaq Farooqi all claimed one wicket apiece.

Put into bat first, Afghanistan finished at 154/7 in the allotted 20 overs at the back of a cautious half-century by veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi.

The touring side, after getting off to a dismal start, soon lost half of their side in the 14th over with just 87 runs on the scoreboard before Nabi launched an astounding recovery.

The right-handed batter top-scored for Afghanistan with a 40-ball 54 which featured six boundaries and a six.

Azmatullah Omarzai (33) offered a helping hand to Nabi amid their 56-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

Shakib Al Hasan spearhead Bangladesh’s bowling charge with 2/27, followed by one each from Nasum Ahmed, Taskin, Shoriful, Mustafizur Rahman and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Bowlers, Litton aid Bangladesh avoid Afghanistan whitewash

CHITTAGONG: Shoriful Islam-led bowling attack decimated Afghanistan’s batting lineup before Litton Das’s half-century lifted Bangladesh to avoid the clean sweep.

Set to chase a modest 127-run target, Bangladesh comfortably raced to 129/3 in 23.3 overs to claim a consolation victory in the three-match ODI series, won by Afghanistan 2-1.

Bangladesh’s stand-in captain Litton Das led from the front with a sensible match-winning knock and top-scored with 53 off 60 deliveries.

The home side had a dismal start to the run chase as opener Mohammad Naim fell for an eight-ball duck in the third over.

Bangladesh sustained another blow to their expedition when Fazalhaq Farooqi castled Najmul Hossain Shanto (11), forcing the hosts to slip to 28/2 in seven overs.

Following the back-to-back blows, Das anchored the run chase with veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

The pair shared a 61-run stand for the third wicket and put their side in control.

Shakib fell victim to Mohammad Nabi in the 18th over after scoring a run-a-ball 39, laced with five boundaries.

Meanwhile, Das, who hit three fours and two sixes in his important knock, carried his bat all the way through and steered Bangladesh home in the 24th over.

Towhid Hridoy, who scored the match-winning boundary for Bangladesh, remained unbeaten on 22.

Opting to bat first, Afghanistan’s batting lineup failed completely and could only accumulate 126 runs before being bundled out in the 46th over.

All-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai waged a lone battle for Afghanistan and top-scored with 56, his maiden ODI fifty.

He struck one boundary and three sixes and conceded 71 deliveries.

Besides him, skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi offered resistance with a cautious 22-run knock from 54 deliveries.

Shoriful Islam led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with 4/21 followed by two wickets each by Taskin Ahmed and Tajiul Islam. Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

Taskin shines in Bangladesh’s record 546-run Test win

Bangladesh crushed Afghanistan by 546 Saturday to secure the biggest Test victory margin by runs in nearly 90 years after Taskin Ahmed saw off the tourists with a career-best 4-37.

The Dhaka Test ended in the extended opening session of the fourth day after a Taskin bouncer hit Zahir Khan, forcing the final batsman to retire hurt.

The visitors barely made a dent in their mammoth case of 662, giving the hosts the biggest Test win by runs since Australia’s 562-run victory over England in 1934.

It was more than double Bangladesh’s previous record of 226 wins over Zimbabwe at Chittagong in 2005.

The home side’s triumph was all but guaranteed after they declared their second innings at 425-4 in Friday’s final session.

Afghanistan stumbled quickly, losing Ibrahim Zadran for a duck off the first ball of the innings and resuming on Saturday at a precarious 45-2.

Afghanistan could show little improvement on the fourth day and lost wickets at regular intervals, with Taskin and Shoriful Islam leading Bangladesh’s way.

Taskin was denied his maiden five-wicket haul when he bowled last man Zahir Khan in the 33rd over of the innings, only for the umpire to signal a no ball.

Afghanistan lost a wicket in the third over of the morning when Nasir Jamal edged Ebadot Hossain behind the stumps for six.

Shoriful, who claimed 3-28, forced Afsar Zazai to give a catch to Mehidy Hasan at gully five overs later, also after he made six runs.

It brought Bahir Shah to the crease as concussion sub for skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi, who retired hurt after he was hit by a bouncer of Taskin on the third day.

But Bahir also failed to survive long as Taskin forced him to give a catch to Taijul Islam at slip for seven.

Liton Das brought an end to Rahmat Shah’s dogged innings of 30 from 73 balls with a catch behind the stumps off Taskin.

Karim Janat showed some aggression, hitting two sixes before Taskin bowled him for 18.

Spinner Mehidy Hasan joined the act by removing Amir Hamza for five to leave Afghanistan eight down, and Taskin did the rest.

Bangladesh made 382 runs on a green wicket in the first innings and bowled out Afghanistan for 146 to take a 236-run lead.

Afghanistan won the only other Test between the two teams when they beat Bangladesh by 224 runs at Chittagong in 2019.

Bangladesh tighten grip on Afghanistan Test

DHAKA: Afghanistan lost two quick wickets Friday, trailing Bangladesh by 616 runs at stumps after centuries from Najmul Hossain and Mominul Haque gave the hosts a third straight day of dominance in their one-off Test.

Bangladesh declared their second innings at 425-4 an hour into the third session in Dhaka and could earn the distinction of cricket’s second-largest Test victory margin when play resumes.

With two full days left in the Test, the chances of a face-saving conclusion by Afghanistan immediately dimmed after Shoriful Islam trapped opener Ibrahim Zadran for a duck off the first ball of the innings.

Taskin Ahmed removed Abdul Malik for five to leave Afghanistan at 7-2, and the visitors suffered a further blow when skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi was forced to retire hurt after being hit by a bouncer.

Rahmat Shah (10) and Nasir Jamal (5) were at the crease when bad light forced stumps with Afghanistan on 45.

Najmul on Friday became only the second Bangladeshi to score a century in each innings of a Test, making 124 to go with his first innings score of 146.

Mominul, the other Bangladeshi to achieve that feat, was unbeaten on 121 alongside skipper Liton Das on 66 when the declaration was made.

It was the 12th Test century for Mominul, the highest tally by any Bangladeshi, with the left-hander smashing 12 fours and a six in his 145-ball innings.

Afghanistan toiled but could only take three wickets through the day, including two in the same over off leg-spinner Zahir Khan.

Zahir ended the prolific innings of Najmul, who gave a catch to Abdul Malik at short midwicket, ending a 151-ball knock with 15 boundaries.

Mushfiqur Rahim hit a six soon after coming to the crease but an attempted reverse sweep on the next ball brought his downfall for eight as Ibrahim Zadran took the catch at slip.

Mominul and Liton then frustrated Afghanistan with an unbroken 143-run fifth-wicket stand.

Resuming at 134-1 overnight, Najmul and Zakir Hasan batted with confidence before Afghanistan got an unexpected breakthrough against the run of play.

The duo made 173 runs before Zakir was run out for 71.

An edge from Najmul’s bat raced to the boundary line, where Nasir Jamal stopped the ball and relayed it to Ibrahim.

Ibrahim’s direct hit found Zakir well short while running for his third, ending their free-flowing partnership.

Zakir scored his second 50 in just his third Test.

Bangladesh scored 382 runs in the first innings and bowled out Afghanistan for 146.

Afghanistan won the only other Test between the two teams when they beat Bangladesh by 224 runs at Chittagong in 2019.

Zakir Hasan and Najmul Hossain both hit unbeaten half-centuries to guide Bangladesh to 134-1 in their second innings and consolidate the hosts’ control in their one-off Test against Afghanistan in Dhaka on Thursday.

Bangladesh decided against enforcing the follow-on despite taking a 236-run lead in the first innings and were up by 370 against Afghanistan at stumps on the second day, with Zakir and Najmul unbeaten on 54 apiece.

The pair added 116 runs in their unbroken second-wicket stand with Mahmudul Hasan (17) the only batsman so far dismissed in the second innings.

Ebadot Hossain returned figures of 4-47 with Bangladesh needing just three overs after tea to wrap up the Afghan innings, with the tourists bowled out for just 146.

Spinners Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam dismissed the final two batsmen, ending with two wickets apiece.

“This is the first time I have seen such a wicket in Bangladesh. We are fortunate to play with three fast bowlers on this kind of pitch,” said Ebadot.

Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott all but conceded the match but said his side still had the chance to keep their pride intact.

“Obviously, the way the pitch is playing as well, it’s gonna be tough,” he said.

“You’ve just got to fight to put up as strong a performance as possible with a bit of pride and show a bit of character.”

Ebadot and Shoriful Islam reduced Afghanistan to 51-4 shortly after the lunch break, before Nasir Jamal and Afsar Zazai put up some resistance with a 65-run fifth-wicket stand.

Mehidy broke the partnership by trapping Jamal lbw for 35 and Ebadot soon dismissed Afsar for 36 to expose Afghanistan’s tail.

Bangladesh resumed their first innings at 362-5 but were all out for 382 early in the morning as the hosts lost their last five wickets for just nine runs.

Nijat Masood claimed 5-79 on debut for Afghanistan, while pacer Yamin Ahmadzai finished with 2-39.

But Afghanistan then lost three wickets in quick succession to spoil their storming start to the day.

Ibrahim Zadran nicked Shoriful and was out for six, while fellow opener Abdul Malik made 17 before falling to Ebadot, Zakir taking a sharp low catch at third slip.

Rahmat Shah was next to fall after he holed out to Taskin Ahmed at midwicket off Ebadot for nine.

Afghan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi departed for nine after the break.

The hosts had shown some positive intent to build on their overnight total before their sudden collapse.

Mehidy was unbeaten overnight but flashed a catch to Amir Hamza at gully off Yamin to end his promising innings at 48.

Mushfiqur Rahim (47) and Taijul Islam (0) followed Mehidy in the next over from Nijat, before Yamin dismissed Taskin for two.

Nijat then bowled Shoriful to wrap up the Bangladesh innings in unexpectedly swift style.

Afghanistan won the only other Test against Bangladesh when they beat the home side by 224 runs at Chittagong in 2019.

Najmul Shanto ton guides Bangladesh to 362-5 against Afghanistan

DHAKA: Najmul Hossain struck his third Test century as Bangladesh dominated a hapless Afghanistan to score 362-5 on the first day of the one-off Test in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Najmul Hossain Shanto made 146 off 175 balls and set up an imposing total in his 212-run second-wicket partnership with Mahmudul Hasan, who hit 76 to make his third Test fifty.

Mushfiqur Rahim was not out on 41 alongside Mehidy Hasan Miraz on 43 when bad light forced stumps with 11 overs left on the opening day.

Afghanistan, who are without talismanic all-rounder Rashid Khan, were on the back foot for most of the day after electing to bowl first on a rare green-top wicket at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Debutant medium pacer Nijat Masood was the most successful Afghan bowler with 2-67, removing Zakir Hasan for one on his very first Test delivery in the second over.

The sharp catch from wicketkeeper Afsar Zazai had to be confirmed by the television umpire after an initial decision of not out.

But Najmul and Mahmudul immediately forged a strong partnership to take control of the proceedings and deny the visitors further momentum.

Najmul hit back-to-back fours off Yamin Ahmadzai in the first over he came to bat and brought up his fifty off 58 balls with a boundary off leg-spinner Zahir.

Occasional spinner Rahmat Shah broke their partnership when Mahumdul attempted a cut shot only to edge a catch to Ibrahim Zadran at slip.

Mahmudul hit nine boundaries in his sedate 137-ball innings.

Afghanistan enjoyed a brief spell of success in the post-tea session when Nijat dismissed Mominul Haque, caught behind down the leg side, for 15.

Najmul fell soon after, heaving a catch to Nasir Jamal at deep midwicket off left-arm spinner Amir Hamza in his attempt for his third six in the innings.

The 24-year-old left-hander smashed 23 fours in his sizzling innings.

Stand-in captain Liton Das followed him quickly, poking Zahir to Ibrahim at slip after making nine runs.

But Mushfiqur and Mehidy halted further collapse and slowly reestablished Bangladesh’s authority with their unbroken 72-run sixth wicket stand.
