Shanto stands tall as Bangladesh dominate rain-hit Day 4 against Pakistan

MIRPUR: Najmul Hossain Shanto produced another composed innings under pressure as Bangladesh tightened their grip on the opening Test against Pakistan before bad light forced an early end to Day Four at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Monday.

The hosts finished the day at 152-3 in their second innings, stretching their overall lead to 179 runs with one day remaining in the contest.

Bangladesh captain Shanto remained unbeaten on 58 at stumps, while veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim was accompanying him on 16 after the pair safely negotiated the closing stages.

The day, however, was heavily disrupted by weather as persistent rain wiped out the entire second session after Lunch.

Play had resumed briefly in the third session, where Bangladesh continued to frustrate Pakistan through the experienced duo of Shanto and Mominul Haque.

The pair extended their third-wicket stand to 105 runs, and both completed well-crafted half-centuries to put Bangladesh firmly in control.

Pakistan eventually found a breakthrough, thanks to Shaheen Shah Afridi, who dismissed Mominul for a patient 56 off 120 deliveries.

Following the dismissal, Mushfiqur joined his captain at the crease, and the duo ensured Bangladesh suffered no further damage before bad light ended proceedings early.

Earlier, Bangladesh resumed their second innings on seven without loss with an overall lead of 34 runs after bowling Pakistan out for 386 on Day 3.

However, Pakistan struck twice early on Day 4 to put the hosts under pressure. Veteran pacer Mohammad Abbas provided the first breakthrough by dismissing overnight batter Mahmudul Hasan Joy for five.

Soon after, Hasan Ali removed opener Shadman Islam, who managed 10 runs, reducing Bangladesh to 23-2 early in the session.

With Pakistan threatening to seize control, Bangladesh captain Shanto and experienced batter Mominul once again combined to stabilise the innings.

The pair, who had earlier stitched together a crucial 170-run stand in the first innings, continued their impressive understanding at the crease with another composed partnership.

They added an unbeaten 70 runs for the third wicket to guide Bangladesh safely to Lunch without any further setbacks.

By Lunch, Bangladesh had recovered to 93-2, with Shanto unbeaten on 34 and Mominul batting on 37.

Rain then halted proceedings immediately after the interval, with the umpires eventually taking tea during the delay before play resumed later in the evening.

Najmul Hossain Shanto creates history during Pakistan Test

MIRPUR: Najmul Hossain Shanto scripted history on Friday by becoming the first Bangladesh captain to score five Test centuries.

The left-handed batter surpassed Mushfiqur Rahim’s record during the opening day of the first Test against Pakistan at the Shere-Bangla National Stadium on Friday.

He reached the milestone with a boundary in the 52nd over of the innings. However, shortly after completing his century, he was dismissed for 101 off 130 balls, hitting two sixes and 12 fours. This was also Shanto’s ninth Test century in his 40th match.

Most centuries by Bangladesh Test captains:

Najmul Hossain Shanto – 5

Mushfiqur Rahim – 4

Mominul Haque: 3

Powered by Shanto’s century, Bangladesh finished the opening day at 301 for the loss of four wickets in 85 overs.

Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten on 48 with the aid of six boundaries while Litton Das held firm, scoring eight not out off 35 deliveries.

Najmul Hossain Shanto was well supported by Mominal Haque, who fell short of a century. The left-hander was trapped lbw for 91 by Noman Ali in the dying hours of the day.

The pair arrived at the crease when their side was reduced to 31-2 in the morning session. Both batters shared a mammoth 170-run stand from 257 deliveries, which took the sting out of Pakistan’s three-pronged pace attack.

For Pakistan, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammad Abbas picked up one wicket each, while Noman Ali also managed to scalp one.

Shanto believes Bangladesh pacers have slight edge over Pakistan

MIRPUR: Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has expressed confidence in his fast bowlers on the eve of the opening Test against Pakistan.

Shanto admitted the strength of Pakistan’s pace attack over the years but also backed his own fast bowlers, citing their performances over the past couple of seasons.

“Pakistan’s pace bowling is traditionally very strong; there is no doubt about that,” Shanto said.

“However, considering how our pacers have performed over the last few years, I would say our pace attack is perhaps slightly ahead,” he insisted.

The left-hander also mentioned the improvement in fast bowlers, noting that it provides him with added comfort as skipper.

“Our pacers have improved immensely in terms of skill, which gives me an extra cushion as a captain,” he said.

The 27-year-old also highlighted the importance of racking up runs on the board in the first innings and said a balanced pace and spin attack would be key to success.

“I personally want the batters to take up the challenge of putting up a big first-innings total. A proper combination of pace and spin will be key to our success.”

Najmul Hossain spoke about speedster Nahid Rana, praising his work ethic while noting that he has yet to make his mark.

Shanto also spoke about fast bowler Nahid Rana, praising his work ethic and expecting him to thrive in the upcoming Test series.

“I have known Rana since his early days, and I am aware of his work ethic,” Shanto noted.

“For a captain, having a genuine tearaway in the side is always a massive plus. He is in great rhythm, and I expect him to hit his peak in this series,” Najmul Hossain Shanto concluded.

Shanto, Mustafizur star in Bangladesh ODI series win

Najmul Hossain Shanto scored a century and Mustafizur Rahman claimed 5-43 as Bangladesh beat New Zealand by 55 runs in the third one-day international to clinch the series 2-1 on Thursday.

Shanto hit 105 off 119 balls, smacking nine fours and two sixes for his fourth ODI century to lift New Zealand from early trouble to 265-8 after being invited to bat first in Chattogram.

Mustafizur, who returned from injury after missing the first two matches, then ripped through the New Zealand batting to help bowl out the opposition for 210 in 44.5 overs.

The performance took Mustafizur’s tally to six five-wicket hauls in ODI cricket, the most by any Bangladesh bowler and level with Wasim Akram (Pakistan) and Trent Boult (New Zealand) among left-arm quicks.

Australia left-armer Mitchell Starc is top of the list on nine.

Dean Foxcroft top-scored for New Zealand with a valiant 75 off 72 balls as he hit seven sixes to extend Bangladesh’s wait for victory after the tourists slipped to 160-9.

Nick Kelly made 59 off 80 at the top of the order.

Pace bowler Nahid Rana and spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz took two wickets each.

Earlier, Bangladesh slipped to 32-3 before Shanto and Litton Das steadied the innings with a 160-run stand — the highest partnership for Bangladesh against New Zealand in the 50-overs format for the fourth wicket.

Will O’Rourke was chief destroyer with the new ball, removing Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan in his opening two overs to leave Bangladesh reeling at 9-2.

Soumya Sarkar was dismissed soon after for 18, dragging one back onto his stumps off O’Rourke before Shanto and Litton hit back.

Left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox broke the stand by removing Litton for 76 off 91 balls, a knock laced with three fours and one six.

It was Litton’s 13th ODI half-century.

Lennox also brought an end to Shanto’s innings, having the left-hander caught by Nathan Smith.

Towhid Hridoy contributed an unbeaten 33 and captain Mehidy added 22 to ensure a challenging total.

O’Rourke was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers with 3-32 while Ben Lister and Lennox took two wickets each.

Shanto dropped as Bangladesh names squad for Sri Lanka T20Is

Bangladesh has named a 16-member squad for the three-match series against Sri Lanka, with former captain Najmul Hossain Shanto left out of the team.

The tigers have made five changes to their squad that have previously faced Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Shanto, who featured in one of only six T20Is played against Pakistan and UAE, has been omitted following his concerning form in the shortest format.

The left-handed batter, who enjoyed a rich vein of form in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka, struggled to find his rhythm in T20Is throughout 2024. The top-order batter only averaged 18.84 in 21 T20Is with just a single half-century.

Opening batter Mohammad Naim has been included in the squad in place of Najmul Hossain Shanto, while experienced pacers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman are also included after recovering from injuries.

All-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin was among the notable inclusions in the Bangladesh squad who earned a recall after more than a year. He is added to the back of his strong performances in Bangladesh’s premier domestic white-ball competitions.

Bangladesh has a busy schedule ahead, with three T20Is against Sri Lanka and Pakistan before the 2025 Asia Cup.

The series against Sri Lanka will commence in Bangladesh on July 10 in Pallekele, followed by the second T20I on July 13 in Dambulla. The final match of the series will be played on July 16 in Colombo.

Bangladesh squad:

Litton Das (capt, wk), Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain Emon, Mohammad Naim, Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali, Shamim Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Rishad Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mohammad Saifuddin.

Najmul Hossain Shanto resigns as Bangladesh Test captain after Sri Lanka defeat

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has stepped down from his position following the team’s crushing defeat by an innings and 78 runs in the second Test against Sri Lanka, bringing an end to his tenure less than a year after taking charge.

As reported by Bangladeshi media, the 26-year-old informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) of his decision shortly after the loss, signalling that he is no longer interested in continuing in the leadership role, particularly after being relieved of ODI captaincy duties earlier this year.

Shanto had taken over the red-ball reins ahead of the home Test series against New Zealand in November 2023 and led Bangladesh in 14 matches.

His record as captain includes four wins, notably back-to-back victories over Pakistan in August 2024, alongside nine defeats and one draw, which came in the opening Test of the recently concluded Sri Lanka series.

Despite the mixed results, Najmul Hossain Shanto gave decent performances with the bat during his captaincy.

He averaged 36.24 as skipper, in contrast to his 29.83 average as a non-captain. In the four wins under his leadership, he maintained a healthy average of 37.16.

The decision to resign follows a forgettable performance by Bangladesh in the second Test in Colombo.

After managing 247 in the first innings, they were outplayed in all departments. Sri Lanka piled up a massive 458 in response, before skittling Bangladesh out for just 133 in their second innings.

Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya was the chief destroyer, picking up a five-wicket haul, while Dhananjaya de Silva and Tharindu Ratnayake chipped in with two wickets apiece.

Pathum Nissanka, who impressed throughout the series, walked away with both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards for his consistent run-scoring.

The two sides will now shift focus to the white-ball leg of the tour. The three-match ODI series begins on July 2 in Colombo, with the second game scheduled for July 5 at the same venue. The series will conclude in Pallekele on July 8.

Bangladesh captain sends warning to India ahead of Champions Trophy clash

DUBAI: Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto sent a warning to India on Wednesday ahead of their opening match against India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener on 20 February.

While addressing a presser, Shanto expressed his confidence in his team’s ability to beat any opponent, emphasizing the strength of their pace attack.

“I think we have always struggled with our seam attack, but in the last couple of years, we have developed some quality fast bowlers,” said Shanto.

“Now we have Nahid Rana and Taskin (Ahmed), and the way they are bowling helps a lot. As a captain, I love to see them bowling fast,” he added.

Bangladesh’s young fast bowler Nahid Rana has impressed with his performance since breaking into the national side.

The Bangladesh skipper praised the seamer for bringing energy to the team.

“I think over the last few months, he has bowled really well and with great pace when we see him bowling like this on the ground, it lifts our whole bowling unit and motivates us to challenge our opponents,” the left-handed batter added.

Najmul Hossain Shanto further revealed that his team stands a strong chance against any opponent if they play to their strengths and execute their plans effectively.

“We believe we can beat any team in this tournament. Every team here is capable of winning,” he remarked.

“But I am not someone who focuses too much on the opponent. If we execute our plans properly, we can beat any team,” he concluded ahead of the Bangladesh match against India tomorrow.

Najmul Hossain Shanto steps down as Bangladesh T20I captain

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially announced on Thursday that Najmul Hossain Shanto has chosen to resign from his position as the national T20I captain.

This decision comes on the heels of his earlier statements indicating that he would not be continuing in this role following the conclusion of the home series against South Africa last year.

Initially, Najmul had contemplated stepping down from the T20I captaincy after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which took place in the USA and West Indies.

However, after a period of reflection, he has decided to withdraw from leadership responsibilities altogether across all formats of the game.

Although the BCB had initially supported Najmul’s decision to step back, a twist in the narrative occurred when BCB President Faruque Ahmed intervened unexpectedly.

Ahmed’s intervention resulted in Najmul’s reinstatement as captain for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. However, Najmul’s leadership was cut short due to an injury incurred during the series.

“Shanto finally told us that he won’t lead in the T20Is, and we accepted it. But since we don’t have T20Is at the moment, we have time on hand, so we are not picking a new captain,” a senior BCB official said.

However, he confirmed that Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead Bangladesh in the highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is scheduled for Pakistan in February-March.

“If there is no injury issue, Najmul will remain the captain for Tests and ODIs, and we have discussed it,” he added.

Bangladesh captain imitates Lionel Messi after series victory over Pakistan

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto imitated Argentinan football star Lionel Messi in a heartfelt social media post after the historic Test series victory against Pakistan.

Bangladesh outclassed Pakistan by six wickets in the second Test match to complete the clean sweep and win their first-ever series against the Green Shirts. The touring side had won the first Test thumpingly by 10 wickets.

Shanto, who made history as the first Bangladeshi cricketer to defeat Pakistan in Test cricket, shared a photo on his official Facebook account today.

In the picture, he can be seen peacefully sleeping alongside the hard-earned trophy, with a caption — “Good morning.”

The Bangladesh captain’s photo imitated the iconic picture of Lionel Messi, where he was seen sleeping alongside the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy in 2022.

Najmul Hossain Shanto was visibly speechless following the team’s momentous victory yesterday. “We can’t express feelings with words, we are really happy,” he said.

“I think before we came here we were looking to win, and the way everyone did their job made me really happy.”

Set to chase a modest 185, Bangladesh knocked the winning runs in the second session of the final day, just 25 minutes before the Tea Break.

Opening batter Zakir Hasan provided Bangladesh with a solid platform with a brisk 40-run knock from just 39 balls.

Following his departure, skipper Najmul Hasan Shanto anchored the run-chase with a sensible 38-run knock.

Later, an unbeaten 32-run partnership for the fifth wicket between veterans Shakib Al Hasan (22*) and Mushfiqur Rahim (21*) steered Bangladesh to a historic victory.
