Leicestershire sign India’s Rahane as Narine returns to Surrey

LONDON: Leicestershire have signed India’s Ajinkya Rahane for part of the 2023 English domestic season, the Midlands county announced Tuesday.

The 34-year-old, who has captained his country in all formats, will arrive at Grace Road in June and be available for eight first-class County Championship matches and all of the One-Day Cup.

Rahane has scored 4,931 runs, including 12 centuries, in 82 Tests and 2,962 runs in 90 one-day internationals, although it is just over a year since he last represented India.

Leicestershire finished bottom in last season’s Second Division of the County Championship without winning a match.

Rahane, who previously had a county stint with Hampshire in 2019 where he scored a century on debutΒ against Nottinghamshire, said in a statement: “I’m really happy to be joining Leicestershire for the upcoming season.

“I can’t wait to play alongside my new team-mates and explore the vibrant city of Leicester.”

Leicestershire director of cricket Claude Henderson added: “He (Rahane) comes with a lot of experience and a tremendous work ethic. It’s a great opportunity for us to tap into that.”

Meanwhile Surrey have re-signed West Indies spinner Sunil Narine for the 2023 Blast.

Narine will be available for all fixtures that do not clash with his commitments to the Kolkata Knight Riders in the lucrative Indian Premier League.

Last year, Narine took 14 wickets at an economy of 5.96 per over in the Blast, and hit 199 runs at a strike rate of 163.11.

“Getting knocked out in the quarter-final last year was a real disappointment with the team we had,” Narine said in a club statement. “I know we can do better this year and will do what I can to help get us to Finals Day.”

KARACHI: Imam-ul-Haq will feature in county cricket for the first time as Somerset County Cricket Club have signed Pakistan’s opening batter for the last four matches of the County Championship season.Β

Imam will be the third Pakistani cricketer to represent Somerset in the County Championship as skipper Babar Azam and Test batter Azhar Ali have already represented the Somerset in the earlier seasons.

“Somerset County Cricket Club are delighted to announce the signing of Imam Ul Haq for the final four @CountyChamp matches of the season,” tweeted Somerset on their official Twitter account.

Meanwhile, the left-handed batter expressed his excitement at becoming part of the county and hoped to contribute to the team’s success.

Ali, Rizwan power Sussex to beat Derbyshire after a thrilling run chase

HOVE: Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan and the left-handed opener Ali Orr shone with the bat as the duo powered Sussex to seal a scintillating victory over Derbyshire after an incredible run chase on the final day.

Set to chase 342 on a rain-hit final day, Sussex did not hold back and produced an astounding run chase to seal their first victory since April 2021.

The persistent showers in the morning washed out 14 overs from the day’s play and as a result, prevented Derbyshire from adding some crucial and quick runs into their overnight 341-run lead.

With the action reduced by 14 overs, the Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman decided to declare their innings at the same and put on a commendable 342-run target for Sussex in the last two sessions.

In the run chase, the opener Orr set the tone with his career-best 141 and was magnificently supported by Rizwan and Tom Aslop, who scored 55 and 76* respectively.

Following an unwanted start to the run chase for Sussex as their skipper Tom Haines was trapped in front by Alex Thompson on 20 at a combined score of 41. Orr and Aslop then ticked along and laid the foundation of the astonishing run chase with a 140 runs stand for the second wicket.

The duo appeared solid as they were marching towards the total at a rapid pace before Aslop miscued a drive to mid-off after contributing 55.

The newcomer Rizwan then joined Orr at the crease and made no mistake to adapt to the required condition as the duo further added 93 runs before Orr departed after he was caught on the mid-wicket boundary off Luis Reece, having faced 203 balls and scoring his career-best 141.

Rizwan then had to battle hard with what looked like a hamstring injury and seemed unaffected by it as he kept pushing for the victory and was supported by the cameos from Delray Rawlins and Ollie Carter.

Despite losing quick wickets in the closing minutes, Rizwan and newly-joined Danial Ibrahim steered their side to the victory in the 74th over. Rizwan remained unbeaten with his gritty knock of 76 off 82 balls with the help of 10 boundaries including a six.

It is pertinent to mention here that Rizwan made his last appearance for the Sussex as he will be returning to international duty with Pakistan as the Green Shirts will be on their away assignment in the Test series against Sri Lanka.

The right-handed batter then held his ground firm and kept the scoreboard ticking while his batting partners walked back with significant contributions.

In the 65th over of Sussex innings, Rizwan smashed a boundary on the first delivery of Luis Reece bowling and got to his first century in the format. The right-handed batter remained unbeaten on 105 off 186 balls with the help of 18 boundaries at the Lunch break on the third day.
