Somerset CCC hosts online auction to support Flood victims in Pakistan

KARACHI: Somerset County Cricket Club announced to initiate the supporting efforts to raise awareness and funds for those affected by devastating flooding in Pakistan recently.

The club will utilize their County Championship fixture against Gloucestershire, scheduled today (September 5) to launch a special online auction, featuring donations of items from the Somerset playing squad, as well as raising awareness through the SCCC live stream and in the ground.

According to the details, the items put on auction – that will run until Sunday – are England’s jersey signed by the entire team from their third Test against South Africa, a signed match-worn shirt of Tom Abell from Somerset vs Gloucestershire, and a signed England 2022 Test shirt each of Jack Leach and Craig Overton.

The county club will also put on the signed match-worn shirt of Pakistan left-handed batter Imam-ul-Haq for auction, who is representing Somerset in the ongoing County Championship 2022.

Furthermore, a canvas print signed by Lord Ian Botham and a signed bat from the 1995 West Indies touring side, will also be put on the auction to raise funds for the flood victims in Pakistan.

Reportedly, tens of millions of people are affected by relentless monsoon rains and one of the worst-hit floods in the country’s history that have submerged a third of the country and claimed more than 1,100 lives.

Somerset sign Imam-ul-Haq for County Championship

KARACHI: Imam-ul-Haq will feature in county cricket for the first time as Somerset County Cricket Club have signed Pakistan’s opening batter for the last four matches of the County Championship season.

Imam will be the third Pakistani cricketer to represent Somerset in the County Championship as skipper Babar Azam and Test batter Azhar Ali have already represented the Somerset in the earlier seasons.

“Somerset County Cricket Club are delighted to announce the signing of Imam Ul Haq for the final four @CountyChamp matches of the season,” tweeted Somerset on their official Twitter account.

Meanwhile, the left-handed batter expressed his excitement at becoming part of the county and hoped to contribute to the team’s success.

“I have heard a lot about the quality of Somerset from Babar Azam and Azhar Ali,” he said. “It is a club with a good reputation and great support. I look forward to representing the county and contributing to some good wins in the County Championship.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Imam has recently become the second batter in ICC ODI batters rankings and is currently part of Pakistan’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour. The opener has been in sublime form since the start of this year as he displayed phenomenal performances against Australia and West Indies both in red and white-ball cricket.
