Former South Africa batter compares Jasprit Bumrah to a ‘genie’

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has heaped praise on India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, likening him to a “genie” after the fast bowler delivered a decisive spell in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final against England.

Bumrah once again proved why he is regarded as one of the most lethal bowlers in world cricket, playing a pivotal role in India’s narrow seven-run victory in a high-scoring contest at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Defending a daunting total of 253, India faced a tense finish as England mounted a fierce chase, largely powered by Jacob Bethell’s explosive century.

With 45 runs required off the final three overs, captain Suryakumar Yadav turned to Bumrah for the crucial 18th over.

The right-arm pacer responded with remarkable composure, delivering a mix of pinpoint yorkers and deceptive full deliveries that restricted England to just six runs in the over.

The tight spell ultimately swung the momentum back in India’s favour as England fell agonisingly short despite Bethell’s 105.

Speaking after the match, Faf du Plessis described Bumrah as a dream weapon for any captain.

“Team India probably doesn’t realise how fortunate they are to have him,” du Plessis said.

“You just hand him the ball, and he finds a way to win matches for you. It’s a superpower every captain would want. It’s like having a genie, you rub the lamp, and Bumrah appears.”

The 32-year-old finished with figures of 1-33 in his four overs in a match that saw a combined total of 499 runs scored, highlighting the difficulty bowlers faced on the batting-friendly surface.

Du Plessis also pointed to Bumrah’s unconventional action as a key factor behind his effectiveness, noting that it makes it extremely difficult for batters to pick the ball early.

“Even when the batter knows what’s coming, a yorker or a slower ball, it’s still hard to line him up,” he explained. “His action is unique, and the ball comes out so quickly that batters struggle to react in time.”

Moeen Ali also set to feature in PSL 2026 after Faf du Plessis

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali is also set to feature in the upcoming edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he announced on Monday.

Moeen, 38, expressed his excitement at joining the PSL, noting that the league has earned a reputation for hosting top-level cricket.

“I’m really excited to be joining HBL PSL in its New Era. The league has earned a reputation for top-level T20 cricket, with high-quality competition and world-class talent across every team,” he wrote on his Instagram handle.

He further mentioned his experience of playing in Pakistan and praised the crowds for passionately supporting their favorite teams.

The Birmingham-born Moeen has extensive experience and has been a regular on the global T20 circuit.

Notably, Moeen had previously featured in the league, playing nine games for Multan Sultans from 2019 to 2021.

Besides the PSL, he has been a regular in the IPL in recent years, having featured in every edition of the IPL since 2018 for three different teams.

For the unversed, Moeen Ali will be the second high-profile player after Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, to announce his participation in the PSL.

Two days ago, the star batter announced that he would enter a new chapter after ending his 14-year IPL journey.

“As one chapter closes, another one opens. I’m excited to share that I’ll be joining the PSL next season. I can’t wait to be part of the energy and talent of this league,” Faf du Plessis wrote in a post on X.

Faf du Plessis propels Texas Super Kings into MLC 2025 playoffs

DALLAS: Faf du Plessis put on a batting clinic with an unbeaten century before Akeal Hosein weaved a tidy spell as Texas Super Kings sealed their spot in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 playoffs with a commanding 39-run win over MI New York on Sunday.

After being asked to bat first, Texas lost Smit Patel (3) early, but that only opened the door for du Plessis to take charge.

The skipper shifted gears instantly, racing to a 21-ball half-century and taking on the MI New York attack with authority.

He found support in Saiteja Mukkamalla (25), who held firm during their 80-run second-wicket stand before falling to George Linde in the ninth over.

Marcus Stoinis then joined du Plessis for a steady 57-run partnership that allowed the former South African captain to settle into a true anchor role. While Stoinis couldn’t quite break free and eventually fell for 25.

Donovan Ferreira then came out to bat and tore into the bowling with a 20-ball 53, matching the fastest fifty in MLC history.

His late-innings onslaught gave du Plessis the perfect foil to continue ticking along, eventually raising his bat for a sublime 103* off just 56 deliveries.

It was his second hundred of the season and eighth in T20s, laced with five fours and nine towering sixes as Texas piled on a daunting 223/4.

Chasing 224, MI New York never truly got into the contest.

Nandre Burger struck early to remove Nicholas Pooran, and then Akeal Hosein put the clamps on the middle order with a miserly 3-15 spell that included the big wickets of Monank Patel (6) and Quinton de Kock (35).

Kieron Pollard did briefly threaten to shift the momentum with a trademark six-hitting spree, especially when he smashed 22 runs off a single over from Noor Ahmad. But the task was a bridge too far.

Pollard’s fighting 70 off 39 balls proved to be a lone hand as the chase fizzled out. Burger and Stoinis came back to snuff out any lingering hopes, restricting MI New York to 184/8 in their 20 overs.

With this clinical win, Texas Super Kings not only preserved their strong run in the tournament but also booked a well-earned place in the MLC 2025 playoffs.

Du Plessis is playing for Morrisville Samp Army in the Abu Dhabi T10 League and the above-mentioned incident during the match against Delhi Bulls.

Morrisville Samp Army, while batting first, set a target of 113 runs, with Faf du Plessis adding only 11 runs to the total.

During the Delhi Bulls’ innings, Tim David hit a powerful shot off Isuru Udana that soared towards extra cover. In a bid to stop the ball from racing to the boundary, Faf du Plessis sprinted at full throttle.

Unfortunately, he was unable to prevent it from crossing the boundary. A ball boy, eagerly anticipating the ball’s arrival, inadvertently obstructed Du Plessis, whose forward momentum was directed towards the boundary boards.

As Du Plessis attempted to leap over the ball boy to avoid a collision, the boy unexpectedly stood up, resulting in a WWE-style suplex that sent Du Plessis over the boundary boards.

Fortunately, he landed safely on the other side, skillfully avoiding the hard impact of the advertising hoardings that lined the field. A flicker of frustration crossed his face as he glanced at the ball boy, silently acknowledging the precarious situation they both found themselves in.

Despite the chaotic encounter, Du Plessis chose not to voice his displeasure. Instead, he took a few moments to catch his breath, stretching out his muscles and assessing his condition before resolutely returning to the field.

DALLAS: Captain Faf du Plessis played a blistering 61-run knock, followed by Marcus Stoinis’s all-round exploits, which helped Texas Super Kings to edge past MI New York in a high-scoring Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 clash here at Grand Prairie Stadium on Sunday.

While batting first, Du Plessis led from the front, giving his side a fiery start with a 38-ball knock during his opening partnership with Devon Conway.

Nosthush Kenjige claimed the prized scalp of Du Plessis in the ninth over with 85 runs on the board. The Super Kings’ skipper top-scored with 61 runs, laced with four sixes and four boundaries.

Meanwhile, Conway scored 40 off 28 with three fours and one six before he fell prey to Ehsan Adil, leaving the home side with 121-2 in 13.1 overs.

Aaron Hardie played a 17-ball cameo scoring 22, while Stoinis scored an unbeaten 24 off 18 to take the team’s total to 176-6 in their allocated 20 overs.

Trent Boult led the bowling for MI New York with two wickets, while Rashid Khan, Nosthush Kenjige, and Ehsan Adil took one wicket each.

In response, MI New York had a disastrous start to their campaign as they slipped to 52-5 in 11.2 overs courtesy of Stoinis and Zia-ul-Haq’s fiery bowling.

However, Monank Patel, who was playing an anchor’s role, was joined by Rashid Khan and together they raised 97 runs from 48 balls, attempting to force a comeback.

Both batters attacked Texas Super Kings’ bowlers, especially Naveen-ul-Haq, who gave eight runs in his first two overs but his other two overs went for 38 runs.

However, the required run-rate was too much to achieve as the equation came down to 32 needed off last over. Stoinis dismissed both batters in the last over, helping his side register a 15-run victory.

Patel top-scored with 61 off 45, while Rashid Khan scored a 23-ball 50, which featured four boundaries and five sixes.

Stoinis returned with bowling figures of 4-50, while Zia-ul-Haq claimed 2-15.

Earlier in the day, in another MLC 2024 match, Washington Freedom further solidified their position at the top of the table with a dominant eight-wicket victory over Los Angeles Knight Riders.

Texas Super Kings-Washington Freedom clash washed out after Faf du Plessis ton

MORRISVILLE: Faf du Plessis’ blistering century went in vain as the fifth match of the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 clash between Texas Super Kings and Washington Freedom was washed out due to persistent rain at Church Street Park on Monday.

Set to chase a mammoth 204, Washington Freedom raced to 62 in four overs, courtesy of Travis Head and Steve Smith’s clean hitting before rain intervened.

After multiple inspections, the umpires opted to deem the clash abandoned with no result and thus, both teams were awarded a point each.

Washington Freedom, who started their MCL 2024 campaign with a victory are sitting at the top with three points from two games, while Texas Super Kings earned their first point as they lost their first match against Los Angeles Knight Riders.

Earlier, Washington Freedom opted to field first, however, the decision backfired as Texas Super Kings’ openers Faf du Plessis and Devon Conway struck 103 runs in 10 overs.

Du Plessis led the attack, while Conway played a supporting role with a 26-ball 39, laced with three boundaries and one six.

Saurabh Netravalkar provided the first breakthrough as he removed Conway on the second ball of the 11th over.

Du Plessis was then involved in a 62-run stand for the third wicket with Marcus Stoinis (29) before Justin Dill got rid of the latter.

Meanwhile, Netravalkar dismissed Du Plessis after he completed his century. The South African played a 58-ball knock of 100 runs with the help of five sixes and eleven fours.

Milind Kumar (11) and Dwayne Bravo (5) remained unbeaten to push the team’s total to 203-5 in their allocated 20 overs.

Saurabh Netravalkar topped the bowling charts with two wickets while Marco Jansen, Akeal Hosein and Justin Dill bagged one each.

Faf du Plessis ruled out of PSL 6

Abu Dhabi: Quetta Gladiators batsman Faf du Plessis will not take further part in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season six, the franchise announced today.
The 36-year-old had a nasty collision while fielding during Gladiators’ clash against Peshawar Zalmi last Saturday. The star batter will fly back to South Africa tonight.
Du Plessis collided with team-mate Mohammad Hasnain. he suffered some memory loss after sustaining a concussion Hasnain while trying to save a boundary.
He lay prone on the ground while the Gladiators’ physio attended him before he got up and was taken to hospital.

‘Fast bowling makes PSL apart from other leagues’ Faf du Plessis

Karachi: Former South African captain Faf du Plessis reiterated that the fast bowlers in Pakistan Super League (PSL) season six make the tournament stands out from other franchise leagues in the world.
The 36-year-old Du Plessis talked with reporters from Abu Dhabi ahead of the resumption of PSL 6. He revealed that he was blown away by the fact that every team has three genuine pacers.
“The difference I see in PSL compare to other leagues is the amount of fast bowlers that are there. Fast bowling is obviously part of the culture of Pakistan,” he said.
Meanwhile, the star batsman is happy to be back in PSL. He will be representing Quetta Gladiators in the remaining matches of PSL 6.
“It’s great to be back, to be part of PSL, even in a different country. We [Gladiators] have found ourselves in a position, we didn’t like to be but we won a game last time [in Karachi].
It must be noted that PSL 6 will resume from June 9 at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
