Madushka, Mendis hit double tons as Sri Lanka pummel Ireland

GALLE: Nishan Madushka and Kusal Mendis both made double centuries against Ireland Thursday as SriĀ Lanka’s top four batters all hit hundreds for only the third time in Test history.

In reply to Ireland’s 492 all out, their highest-ever Test score,Ā SriĀ LankaĀ declared their first innings on 704 for three after tea on the fourth day of the second Test in Galle, 212 runs ahead.

Ireland lost two early wickets in their second innings to end the day 54 for two, needing a further 158 on the final day to avoid a second straight innings defeat.

Ireland could still achieve a historic first draw if they can hang on after losing all five of their games since obtaining Test status in 2017.

“We struggled to getĀ SriĀ Lankan wickets. But the positive for us is the application and skill our batters showed in the first innings,” Ireland coach Gary Wilson said.

“The challenge for us now is to do it again tomorrow and go back home with a draw,” he added.

Madushka converted his maiden Test century into a double hundred, becoming the second-youngestĀ SriĀ Lankan to score a Test 200 after Mahela Jayawardene.

He was dismissed for 205 in the third over after lunch, lbw to Andy McBrine, with Ireland successfully reviewing the decision after the initial appeal was turned down.

Madushka’s marathon knock lasted six minutes short of eight hours after he faced 339 deliveries and hit 22 fours and a six.

Mendis, who had twice been dismissed in the 190s, reached his first Test 200 by pushing a Ben White delivery behind square to steal a single.

He amassed 245 runs and was one short of Wasim Akram’s world record of 12 sixes in a Test innings when he was caught at long-off attempting to equal that mark.

Angelo Mathews was dismissed for a duck in the first Test and was put down on one this match, but made the most of his reprieve to post his 16th Test hundred.

That gave the hosts their quadruple-centurions entry in the history books, after India against Bangladesh in 2007 and Pakistan againstĀ SriĀ LankaĀ in 2019.

Captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who scored 115 on Wednesday, declared immediately.

Their monster total of 704 for three was also the highest-ever score in Galle, eclipsing Bangladesh’s 638 all out in 2013.

The pitch was still a batter’s paradise but Ramesh Mendis cleaned up James McCollum for 10 before Prabath Jayasuriya had Peter Moor caught at short extra cover.

Andy Balbirnie and Harry Tector took Ireland to stumps without further trouble, with the captain on 12 not out and the Ireland number four on seven.

Karunaratne, Madushka hit tons as Sri Lanka pile on runs

GALLE: Dimuth Karunaratne and Nishan Madushka both hit centuries as they amassed a record Sri Lankan opening stand in Galle of 228 in the second Test against IrelandĀ on Wednesday.

The hosts were 357 for one at the close, still 135 runs behind but with nine wickets in hand.

Madushka was unbeaten on 149 at stumps, alongside Kusal Mendis, approaching a century of his own on 83, after Karunaratne departed for 115 — the only wicket to fall on the third day of the match.

The first Test ended inside three days with Sri Lanka’s spinners dominating, but the pitch in the second encounter has offered the spinners little assistance and the batsmen dominated proceedings.

Captain Karunaratne reached the 16th century of his test career, and his second consecutive ton, in just 116 balls.

But the left-hander mistimed a pull shot off Curtis Campher and was caught at deep fine leg in the last over before lunch, two balls after he was hit on the helmet.

Madushka had already brought up his maiden Test century, pullingĀ a Harry Tector full toss for six.

Their 228 was a record Sri Lankan opening partnership at the ground, eclipsing the 193 between Marvan Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya against South Africa in 2000.

Mendis and Madushka continued the run-fest, with the number three racing to his 83 off 96 balls with seven fours and five sixes, including three in a row off debutant left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys, who was rapidly taken out of the attack.

Bad light interrupted play before tea, before the rains came down and it was called off for the day.

The prospect of a draw loomed large but Sri Lanka batting coach Naveed Nawaz insisted his side could still win the game “although rain has played havoc”.

“There’s a total of 180 overs left in the game now,” he told reporters. “If we bat for another 90 overs, we’ll be able to take a decent lead as our deficit is now only 135.

“We have wickets in hand and this is still a good batting pitch.”

Play will resume 15 minutes early on the final two days to make up for lost time.

Sri Lanka lead the two-match series 1-0.

IrelandĀ fast bowling coach Ryan Eagleson conceded his team’s bowlers “are still learning and are less experienced in Test cricket”.

“So you have got to give them time and be patient,” he said.

‘Babar Azam should be captain of team until he retires’ says Miandad

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and legendary batter Javed Miandad lauded Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam and stated that the skipper should remain as captain of the national team until he retires from cricket after the Green Shirts registered a historic win in the Galle Test on Wednesday.

The Babar Azam-led side chased a historic 342-run target in the fourth inning, the highest chase by any team at the venue, to beat Sri Lanka by four wickets on the back of an astounding unbeaten 160-run knock by opener Abdullah Shafique.

ā€œBabar Azam is mature now. He should be the captain of the team until he retires from the game,ā€ said Miandad on his official Youtube channel.

He further hailed the skipper for leading the team from the front and inspiring confidence in other team members through his performance.

“He led the team brilliantly. The most important thing is he is performing brilliantly himself. He leads from the front and it shows confidence. Often, if a captain doesn’t perform, it can affect the team negatively, and it leads to his downfall,” said Miandad.

ā€œTeam is playing as a combined unit, and the credit goes to our players as well as our no.1 captain. He is our captain cool. He doesn’t lose his temper,ā€ he added.

While heaping praises he also advised the national team and its skipper to maintain consistency and perform well on every new day.

“The team must be consistent. I advise Babar and the rest of the players that every day is a new day. They should forget what they achieved yesterday,” he concluded.

Records tumble as Pakistan seal historic victory over Sri Lanka in first Test

GALLE: Various records tumbled during the recently-concluded first Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka as the visitors defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets on the back of an astounding unbeaten 160-run knock of right-handed opener Abdullah Shafique.

As Pakistan displayed sheer dominance over the Sri Lankan bowling attack in the fourth inning; chasing their second-highest ever total in the history of Test cricket. The Green Shirts have registered several records from their incredible victory.

Pakistan’s successful 342-run chase against Sri Lanka in the first Test is the highest chase by any team at Galle. The previous highest successful fourth-innings chase here was 268 by Sri Lanka versus New Zealand in 2019.

Pakistan’s hero of the Galle Test Abdullah, who displayed brilliance with his outstanding knock of 160* and guided the touring side to a historic victory also tumbled various records, as the right-handed batter become the first Pakistan batter to score a century at Galle in the fourth inning.

The 22-year-old opener has also scored the most Test runs for Pakistan after six matches, having scored 685 runs at an average of 76.11, leaving behind the legendary batter Javed Miandad, who scored 652.

Furthermore, following his gritty knock of 160*, Abdullah has also become the first batter in Test history to bat over 500 minutes in a successful run chase as his match-winning knock saw him staying at the crease for a mammoth 524 runs.

Whereas, Abdullah’s 160 is also the third-highest individual score by a Pakistan batter in the fourth inning of a Test.

Besides Abdullah, Pakistan captain Babar Azam touched another milestone completing 10,000 international runs across all formats to become the fastest Asian batter to reach the landmark.

On the opening day of the Galle Test, the Pakistan captain also became the fifth-fastest batter to mark 10,000 runs in international cricket in the record 228 innings, surpassing India’s Virat Kohli and Australia’s Steve Smith as both took 232 innings to achieve the feat.

The right-handed batter is also the quickest Pakistan batter to the 10,000 runs mark, leaving behind legendary batter Miandad, who achieved the milestone in 248 innings.

Abdullah shines as Pakistan outclass Sri Lanka by four wickets in first Test

GALLE:Ā Abdullah Shafique starred for Pakistan with a blistering knock of 160 not-out as the touring side clinched a thumping win against Sri Lanka by four wickets on the final day of the first Test, here on Wednesday.

Abdullah led the charge for the Green Shirts during their chase of the massive 342-run target set by Sri Lanka in the final innings of the match.

Pakistan resumed their second inning on the final day with the overnight score of 222/3 and sailed comfortably towards the target despite losing three wickets along the course and a brief delay due to rain.

The overnight pair of Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah provided a solid start to the day’s play as they added another 55 runs to the total before Rizwan fell prey to the spinner Prabath Jayasuriya following a crucial 40-run knock.

Debutant Agha Salman failed to impress for the second time in the match and managed only 12 runs before Jayasuriya removed him on a caught-behind wicket.

Hasan Ali’s short-lived knock brought Mohammad Nawaz to the crease who scored 19 runs to take his side towards the finish line with undeterred Abdullah on the other end.

For Sri Lanka, spinner Jaysuria remained phenomenal with the bowl throughout the game as he grabbed four wickets in the second inning followed by a five-wicket haul in the first. Whereas, Ramesh Mendis and Dhananjaya De Silva took a wicket apiece.

Moreover, Pakistan completely dominated the hosts during the last two days of the Galle Test as the Green Shirts had a flourishing start to their chase on the previous day after wrapping up Sri Lanka’s second inning on 337.

Earlier, Pakistan raised 218 in their first inning after a magnificent centurion knock by the skipper Babar Azam, meanwhile, Sri Lanka scored 222 during their first inning.

‘Job isn’t done yet’ centurion Abdullah aims to lead Pakistan to victory

GALLE: Pakistan’s fourth-inning centurion Abdullah Shafique, who bolstered the touring side to close in on the 342-run target has set his sights on leading the Green Shirts to victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Abdullah, in a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s released statement on the conclusion of the fourth day of the ongoing Test, expressed satisfaction with his magnificent knock, while at the same time claiming that he is aware that the job is not done yet.

“First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to the Almighty as I was able to score second Test hundred for Pakistan. We are currently in a very comfortable position, so I will do everything in my power to ensure that we pursue the total tomorrow,” Abdullah stated.

“The job is not done yet but the strive will be to maintain our focus tomorrow and chase the remaining total. The target is to not get easy in any phase and I am hopeful the result will be in our favour,” he added.

The right-handed batter then went on to reveal the team’s strategy to go for the total and claimed that they divided the target into small partitions, session by session to move closer to it by the end of the day.

“The master plan was to go for the chase, but we made small targets session by session to come closer to it,” he revealed.

The opening batter, who remained unbeaten with a magnificent 122, also opined on his crucial 101-run partnership with Pakistan captain Babar Azam and claimed that the latter’s presence gives him a lot of confidence.

“Babar is a wonderful batter and I have always learned from him. It was helpful to have him at the other end. He was guiding me throughout,” Abdullah shared.

“His wicket put more responsibility on me. I tried to not lose a wicket and help my team finish the day on a high note. Now, my target is to win this match for my team tomorrow,” he maintained.

Abdullah then heaped praises on Sri Lanka’s left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya and claimed that the team’s strategy was to go after him and stop him from stifling the touring batters.

“We chose to pursue Jayasuriya, a fantastic bowler who was extremely challenging to face on this pitch, and develop scoring options against him so that he wouldn’t feel like he was succeeding,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan need a further 120 runs on the final day to seal victory in the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka. Centurion Abdullah (122*) and Mohammad Rizwan (7*) will resume the proceedings for the touring side at 222/3.

Abdullah’s ton powers Pakistan to dominate Sri Lanka on fourth day

GALLE: Opener Abdullah Shafique starred with an astounding century to cement his side’s position in the game as Pakistan raised 222 for three wickets while chasing the 342-run target set by Sri Lanka in the first Test, here on Tuesday.

Abdullah played a glittering knock of 112 not-out and remained firm on the crease at the end of the fourth day’s play with 120 more runs left to chase.

Skipper Babar Azam, on the other hand, combined excellently with Abdullah as the former shone with a half-century to build a solid 101-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Meanwhile, Babar reached another milestone as he completed his 3000 Test runs during his magnificent 55-run knock.

Pakistan had a flourishing start to their chase of a massive 342-run target on a ruthless spin track after wrapping up the hosts’ second inning on 337.

The opening pair of Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah provided a solid start of 87 runs to bolster Pakistan’s second inning.

Ramesh Mendis gave Sri Lanka a much-needed breakthrough when wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella dislodged the bells to stump out Imam on 35.

Whereas, experienced batter Azhar Ali remained unimpressive for the second time in the match as Prabath Jayasuriya got rid of him cheaply on 6.

Jayasuriya, however, took his second wicket to soothe Sri Lanka as he bowled out Babar when Pakistan were looking to dominate Sri Lanka scoring 205 runs for the loss of just two wickets.

Pakistan will resume their batting on the final day with centurion Abdullah Shafique and wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan on the crease and seven wickets in hand to chase another 120 runs to seal the victory.

Earlier, the overnight pair of Dinesh Chandimal and the tail-ender Prabath Jayasuriya started the day’s play and survived just four more overs to add eight runs to the Sri Lankan total on a new day.

Naseem Shah castled the stumps of the tail-ender to leave Chandimal stranded on the 90s but remained the top-scorer for his side with his blistering 94 including five boundaries and two sixes.

Kusal Mendis and Oshada Fernando played crucial knocks of 72 and 64, respectively, to take their side towards a competitive total on a menacing spin track.

For Pakistan, Mohammad Nawaz starred with the bowl with his five-wicket haul while Yasir Shah grabbed three wickets. Hasan Ali and Naseem Shah took wicket apiece.

Fernando departed without disturbing the scoreboard in the second session after he played a gritty knock of 64 runs.

All-rounder Angelo Mathew failed to impress with the bat as Nawaz dismissed the Sri Lankan veteran cheaply on 9.

Mendis, on the other hand, continued to upset the Pakistan bowlers and looked dangerous on 76 before Shah’s sharp turning ball hit the off-stump to end his inning.

Dhananjaya De Silva combined excellently with the middle-order batter Dinesh Chandimal to raise the 40-run partnership after Sri Lanka were struggling at 178/5.

However, Shah again took the charge and dislodged the stump to send De Silva back to the pavilion after scoring 20.

Meanwhile, Nawaz dismissed wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella on 12 and Ramesh Mendis on 22 to complete his five-wicket haul.

Lyon, Head storm Sri Lanka as Australia clinch first Test within three days

GALLE: Nathan Lyon and Travis Head wreaked havoc on the Sri Lankan batting line to wrap up the rain-hit first Test within the three days as Australia crushed the hosts by 10 wickets, here on Friday.

Sri Lanka showcased a dismal batting performance in the second inning after trailing by a deficit of 109 runs. The hosts hardly managed to avoid an innings defeat, amid the complete collapse of the batting order.

Australian bowlers completely dismantled the Sri Lankan batting as the team was bowled out on 113 with the last six wickets falling in quick succession and added just 18 runs to the total. Only four Sri Lankan batters managed to step into double figures with skipper Dimuth Karunaratne topping the scorecard with 23 runs.

Lyon and Head starred with the bowl to force this Sri Lankan collapse by bagging four wickets each. Meanwhile leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson also grabbed two wickets.

After being put to bat the second time for chasing a meager target of 5 runs, the tourists utilized only four balls with Usman Khuwaja hitting a six and a four to culminate the Australian dominance in style.

Earlier, Australia started the processing of Day 3 by resuming their first inning with an overnight score of 313/8 and managed to add only 8 runs before being bowled out on 321. Left-handed opener Usman Khawaja and all-rounder Cameron Green scored half-centuries on the rain-hit second day to tighten the grip of their side on the first Test.

Australia have now secured a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka with the second Test scheduled from July 8 to 12 at the same venue.

Green, Khawaja star as Australia attain lead on a rain-hit second day

GALLE: Australia’s left-handed opener Usman Khawaja and all-rounder Cameron Green scored half-centuries as Australia secured a dominant 101-run lead on a rain-hit second day of the ongoing first Test.

Resuming at an overnight score of 98/3, the touring side soon found themselves in a state of bother as left-handed batter Travis Head perished without adding to his overnight score of six.

Khawaja then joined hands with Green and marched towards the total as the pair added a valiant 57 runs for the fifth wicket before the former made his way as he fell short to Jeffery Vandersay, who provided an important breakthrough to his side with his first wicket in the longest format.

Khawaja played a magnificent knock of 71 off 130 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries.

Following his departure, Green and wicket-keeper batter Alex Carey took the charge and piled 84 runs for the sixth wicket and bolstered Australia to take the lead.

The pair appeared solid with Green amassing his fourth Test century and Carey just five short of it before Ramesh Mendis trapped the latter to provide a glimmer of hope for the struggling hosts. The right-handed batter scored 45 off 47 balls with the help of six boundaries.

The touring side then lost two wickets at an alarming rate and slipped to 278/8 with Green and Mitchell Starc walking back to the pavilion in two consecutive overs respectively. Green remained the top scorer with 77 off 109 balls, laced with six boundaries, while Starc could only score 10.
