Pakistan’s Haider Ali bags bronze medal at Paralympics 2024

Pakistan’s Haider Ali secured the bronze medal in the Men’s Discus Throw F37 event at the ongoing Paris Paralympics 2024 on Friday.

At the iconic Stade de France, during the Discus Throw F37 event, Haider Ali secured the medal with an impressive final throw, which soared to a distance of 52.54 meters.

Uzbekistan’s Tolibboy Yuldashev won the gold with his 57.28-meter throw, which was achieved in his sixth and final throw.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Jesse Zesseu secured the silver medal with a throw of 53.24m.

Notably, Haider Ali clinched theĀ gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.

For the unversed, prior to the Paralympics,Ā Pakistan’s star athlete Arshad Nadeem ended the country’s 32-year medal drought in the Olympics after bagging a gold medal with the longest throw of 92.97 meters in the javelin final of the Paris Olympics 2024.

Arshad set the Olympic record with a 92.97m throw, going past Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen, who threw farthest at 90.57 during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

His throw was enough for him to seal the Gold medal, the first-ever individual gold medal in the Olympics for Pakistan.

India’s Neeraj Chopra secured the silver medal with an 89.45m throw in his second attempt while all of his other attempts were deemed as ā€œNo Throwā€.

It is worth mentioning here that Arshad Nadeem was Pakistan’s last hope for a medal in the Paris Olympics as all of their remaining athletes had been knocked out of the medal race.

Pakistan last won a medal in the Olympics during the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona.

Haider Ali’s nerves of steel lift Derbyshire to tie with Durham

Durham and Derbyshire Falcons played out a thrilling tie in their T20 Blast clash as Haider Ali hit the final ball of the innings to a sensational boundary to earn his team a share of the spoils.

Zaman Khan and Zak Chappell each claimed four wickets, showing great pace and variation, while George Scrimshaw picked up his 50th T20 wicket for Derbyshire.

Brydon Carse returned from injury to top score for the home side with a career-best 58 as Durham posted 178 from their 20 overs, although they were to rue a batting collapse, losing their final five wickets for only 17 runs.

Derbyshire found their range in response as Luis Reece blasted 58 from Ā 47 balls. But, the home side dragged it back to set up a tense finale as Wayne Parnell claimed three wickets.

Haider Ali held his nerve from the final ball and rescued a tie for the Falcons finding the boundary on the leg-side to claim a valuable point.

The visitors won the toss and elected to field, but were put on the back foot by Michael Jones’ early attack. The Scotland international, replacing Graham Clark at opener due to illness, crashed five boundaries in the powerplay before he picked out Mattie McKiernan on the fence to hand Khan the breakthrough.

Alex Lees found his touch after a slow start but then suffered an unfortunate end when he was run out at the non-strikers’ end by McKiernan deflecting Carse’s drive back into the stumps. Carse responded to the misfortune by blasting two huge sixes straight down the ground to propel Durham’s scoring rate over nine runs per over.

The Falcons kept themselves in the contest as Ollie Robinson and Ashton Turner were dismissed cheaply, reducing the hosts to 100 for four with eight overs remaining. Carse notched his second T20 fifty clearing the rope with two further strikes down the ground before Zaman Khan returned to the attack and prised out the all-rounder for 58.

Carse’s dismissal sparked a collapse in the Durham ranks. The hosts fell from 161 for five to 178 all out in the final 15 balls of the innings. Chappell did the damage with four late wickets, while Zaman Khan added a fourth for himself to bottle up the Durham lower order.

Pakistan international Zaman Khan was sensational with the ball for Derbyshire Falcons as he returned with magnificent bowling figures of 4/21 and did not concede a single boundary in his quota of four overs.

Derbyshire issued a rapid response to their chase as Harry Came set the tone against Parnell, smashing his first over for three-straight boundaries. Came made his way to 34 from 17 before Parnell had his revenge to remove the Falcons’ opener in the final over of the powerplay.

But, Reece and Wayne Madsen kept the visitors well ahead of the run rate, finding the fence with ease against slack Durham bowling. Reece made a slow start to his knock but he accelerated through the gears to reach his 16th T20 fifty from 38 balls, including two towering sixes against Liam Trevaskis.

Coughlin drew a false shot from Madsen and Nathan Sowter added the wicket of Leus du Plooy to his collection this season to put the visitors back under pressure, elevating the required run rate beyond 12 per over. Haider Ali responded with back-to-back boundaries in the 17th over to open up a tense finale, requiring 31 from the final three overs.

Parnell and Trevaskis turned the screw for the hosts, combining twice to prise out Reece for 58 and Brook Guest, swinging the momentum back to Durham.

Haider Ali and McKiernan drilled De Leede’s penultimate over for 14, aided by two wides from the Netherlands international, leaving the game in the balance heading into the final six balls.

Parnell cost a run with his first ball throwing it needlessly back at the stumps after holding McKiernan in check. But his following four balls were on the money to leave Derbyshire needing five from the final delivery. With the game on the line, Haider Ali found the gap in a leg-side boundary to snatch a tie for the Falcons on the road.

Derbyshire all-rounder, Luis Reece, said: ā€œWe would have taken 178 at the half-way stage, so it is disappointing to fall short. In the final over, we were thinking one clean hit and we’re there, but unfortunately, we didn’t get it. The lads are feeling a little bit disappointed, we thought we had it under control for the majority of our innings.

ā€œI suppose being in, I should have been the one to see it home, but I didn’t get the elevation on the shot I needed to clear the rope. There are fine margins in this game, and today it has been the finest of margins that has cost us the win. I’m always wanting more and I’m still chasing that elusive big score.

ā€œHopefully, I feel there is a big one in me in the next couple of games to help us push on. Games come thick and fast, but we’re starting to run out of games so we need to get on a bit of a run to get us up the table.ā€

Haider Ali scores maiden County Championship century

CHESTERFIELD: Pakistan’s right-handed batter Haider Ali scored a fighting century for Derbyshire in the ongoing County Championship 2023.

Haider Ali, who had a disappointing start to his County Championship and T20 Blast campaign, continued to regain his rhythm and backed to his absolute best in Derbyshire’s fixture against Yorkshire.

Derbyshire were in heaps of trouble when Haider Ali came out to bat. The side was four down for just 17 runs in the second innings while trailing a further 225 runs as they were bowled out for a skimpy 111 in the first innings while Yorkshire piled 353.

The top-order collapse gave Yorkshire a sniff on a comfortable victory, however, Haider Ali, alongside skipper Leus du Plooy soon spoiled their plans.

The pair of Haider and du Plooy frustrated Yorkshire bowlers and put on an astounding 231-run partnership for the fifth wicket with the Pakistan batter scoring his maiden century of his County Championship career.

Haider Ali scored at a brisk strike rate of 82 and scored a brilliant century. He scored 129 off 156 deliveries, smashing 21 boundaries and two sixes during the course of a magnificent century.

His opening partner Leus du Plooy, however, batted cautiously and was just four short of his well-deserved when the umpire called for the stumps.

Derbyshire skipper scored 96 not out off 166 deliveries, laced up with 14 boundaries.

The wonderful fifth-wicket partnership between Haider Ali and Leus du Plooy saved Derbyshire from an innings defeat as their 225-run stand put Mickey Arthur’s side into the lead.

Haider Ali and du Plooy will now resume Derbyshire’s second innings from 248/4 and will be hoping to stretch their overnight stand to further strengthen their side’s grasp on the match.

WATCH: Wicketkeeper tricks Haider Ali to dismiss him in comical fashion

LONDON: Pakistan batter Haider Ali was stumped out in a bizarre manner, thanks to the shrewdness of the wicketkeeper, during the Vitality Blast match between Derbyshire Falcons and Birmingham Bears on Wednesday.Ā

The dismissal happened in the 11th over of Debyshire’s chase when Haider Ali was batting at 48 from 33 balls. The right-hander failed to connect with Danny Briggs’ overpitched delivery. While Birmingham’s wicketkeeper Alex Davies failed to grab the ball initially, Haider Ali tried to snatch a quick single assuming that the wicketkeeper was not in possession of the ball. But to his dismay, Davies dislodged the bails as soon as he was out of his crease.

Later, Derbyshire won the match by six wickets thanks to a match-winning knock by captain Leus du Plooy, who scored 66 from 25 balls.Ā

Notwithstanding the comical fashion in which he departed, Haider Ali, otherwise, played a handsome knock and gave a superb start to Derbyshire’s chase of massive 204 runs.

He stitched a 95-run opening stand with Luis Reece, who scored 57 from 38 balls.

It is pertinent to mention that the 22-year-old has scored 499 runs in 33 T20Is for Pakistan at an average of 18.48. He struggled with his form in the recent Pakistan Super League season 8, playing for Karachi Kings.

Haider Ali was also a part of the Pakistan side which finished as runners-up in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

The youngster joined Mickey Arthur’s Derbyshire County Cricket Club in April for the County Championship 2023 and Vitality Blast.

“I’m very excited, it’s my first time playing county cricket and I love the coaching of Mickey Arthur,” said Haider Ali at the time of his deal with the club.

“I think it’s difficult for anyone to play all formats, but I’m lucky to have the opportunity and I’m so excited to get started. It has been a dream of mine to play under Mickey, as soon as he called I said ā€˜I’m ready to play county cricket for Derbyshire.”

Haider Ali joins Derbyshire for County Championship 2023

KARACHI: Pakistan’s young right-handed batter Haider Ali has joined Derbyshire County Cricket Club for the upcoming County Championship 2023.

According to the County club, Haider has joined the squad and is upbeat about working under former Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur and playing his natural aggressive game.

Haider signed a deal with Derbyshire for the entirety of the 2023 season, which begins against Worcestershire in the County Championship on Thursday.

Haider also expressed his excitement on working under Arthur, having seen his impact during the latter’s stint as Pakistan head coach between 2016-2019.

“I’m very excited, it’s my first time playing county cricket and I love the coaching of Mickey Arthur,” he said.

“I think it’s difficult for anyone to play all formats, but I’m lucky to have the opportunity and I’m so excited to get started. It has been a dream of mine to play under Mickey, as soon as he called I said ā€˜I’m ready to play county cricket for Derbyshire.

“In Pakistan, our red ball cricket has completely different situations because it’s always hot weather, the pitches are not so good for seamers. In England, the pitches will be good for seam and swing.

“I’ve spoken to the coaches and they can help me, but I can still play my natural game. I like to attack the bowler, but every bowler is a good bowler in county cricket, so you need to choose bowlers to play your natural game against.

“In white ball cricket, I can play to the team requirements. If I need to be aggressive, I can do that, but if I need to bat 15-20 overs, I can do that too. I’m really excited to experience the Derbyshire crowd.”

It is pertinent to mention that Haider was a part of the Pakistan side which finished as runners up in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. The right-handed batter represented Pakistan in 33 T20Is and two ODIs.

WATCH: ‘Still needed’ Imad tells Sharjeel, Haider to continue practice

KARACHI: Karachi Kings’ captain Imad Wasim told Sharjeel Khan and Haider Ali, who were left out of the team during Sunday’s clash against Multan Sultans, not to lose hope and remain prepared for the opportunity that may come at any time in the Pakistan Super League season 8 remainder.

Karachi Kings sealed a sensational 66-run win against Sultans in their final home game yesterday to avenge their earlier loss to the side on the latter’s home soil.

Following their sensational win, skipper Imad delivered a dressing room speech in which he congratulated his team for the amazing victory, and also lifted the confidence of the dispirited players in the squad.

“Please do not give up” he requested Haider and Sharjeel. “The team might need you at any moment so keep practising,” he added.

He also thanked young pacer Mohammad Musa for his efforts in the game despite not bowling a single over on a spin-friendly surface.

“I still believe this is a champion side,” said the skipper in his post-match address, adding “Amir is going to be back (in the team) so there will be a lot of players who will not play so thank you so much for your support”

Dynamic opener Sharjeel was sidelined after the first three fixtures while uncapped Tayyab Tahir was given an opportunity in the side in place of Haider in the last game.

Tayyab proved his inclusion right with an astounding half-century on a tricky surface that saw Karachi Kings’ spinners dominating the Sultans’ batting lineup in the latter half of the game.

It is pertinent to mention here that the 2020 PSL Champions Kings will play Babar Azam-led Peshawar Zalmi in their next encounter in Rawalpindi on March 1.

Botha expects Haider Ali to be game changer for Karachi Kings in PSL 8

KARACHI: Karachi Kings head coach Johan Botha has expressed his faith in young batter Haider Ali to become a game-changer for Ā his side Ā in the upcoming Pakistan Super League season 8

Haider, the latest addition to the Karachi Kings’ squad, is one of the most promising talents in the PSL and has already proved his mettle in the earlier seasons playing for Peshawar Zalmi.

“I think our biggest player and the player we probably need to get the most out of is [Haider] Ali,” he told PCB digital on Saturday.

“When he was with [Peshawar] Zalmi in the first couple of years, he was excellent. I thought this guy could be one of the best T20 players in the world.”

Botha disclosed that the Karachi Kings’ management was trying to get the most out of the 22-year-old’s enormous potential and refine his abilities”

“Hopefully, we can get the best out of Haider Ali and if he has a really good tournament, we’ll be good as a team. He is dangerous as a player and can take the game away from the opposition. The management is looking to get the best out of him.” he said

Talking about the Karachi Kings’ road map to ace the upcoming PSL edition, Botha argued that the team would first try to gain momentum through home matches.

“We’ve got to try and start well in Karachi. That is obviously a bit of an advantage, I would say, to play at home. First up, you want to start well at home.” he said.

“I suppose the crowds will be full again as the Covid pandemic is over. We have to make the most of starting at home, starting well and get some early momentum. That is what you want to do in a tournament like this. You need to get momentum early.”

“I hope that with the international players we’ve picked, plus having retained eight local players, we have got a strong enough squad to start well, then keep that momentum and get us into the playoffs. And that will put us two or three games away from winning a tournament.”

Moreover, Karachi Kings’ head coach claimed that his side had the best experienced T20 players and seasoned power hitters in the squad who could steer the team back on a winning track.

“We have a really experienced squad. We have probably gone for the most experience in this game that I’ve seen, and we’ve got to bank on that. We have to hope that those guys perform for us on the big stage and can get this team back to winning ways.” he maintained

“We can fire at the top with the bat. In a tournament like this, your top six have to fire, get the runs, and get it quick enough or you are always going to struggle.”

It is pertinent to mention here that PSL season 8 will kick off on February 13 in Multan with a grand ceremony followed by the opening match between defending champions Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans.

Karachi Kings, on the other hand, will play their first match on February 14 against Babar Azam-led Peshawar Zalmi at National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi.

Meanwhile, Haider expressed that he was excited to work with Arthur since he was stillĀ  “highly regardedĀ within the Pakistan setup”.

ā€œI’ve seen over the last few years how many Pakistan players have improved their game by playing at a high standard in county cricket, and that’s something I think could really help my development,” he said as quoted by Derbyshire.

Derbyshire start the new season with a home County Championship Division Two match against Worcestershire on 6 April.
