Hasan Ali stars as Yorkshire edge Derbyshire in Vitality Blast thriller

LEEDS: Pakistan fast bowler Hasan Ali produced a match-winning all-round display to guide Yorkshire County Cricket Club to a thrilling two-wicket victory over Derbyshire County Cricket Club in the ongoing Vitality Blast at Headingley on Sunday.

Batting first, Derbyshire posted an imposing 194-4 in their allotted 20 overs, powered by an outstanding unbeaten knock from opener Martin Andersson, who smashed 81 off 56 deliveries.

He received solid support from Matthew Montgomery and Ross Whiteley during the latter stages of the innings. Montgomery scored a brisk 35 off 23 balls, while Whiteley remained unbeaten on 39 from just 17 deliveries to help Derbyshire finish strongly.

For Yorkshire, Hasan Ali, Andrew Tye, Matthew Revis and Jafer Chohan claimed one wicket each.

Chasing 195, Yorkshire suffered early setbacks and slipped to 65-4 in 7.4 overs after Pakistan pacer Akif Javed removed opener Adam Lyth, who had blasted 31 off only 11 balls with the help of two fours and three sixes.

Veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali then revived the chase with an aggressive half-century, scoring 51 off 35 deliveries, including five sixes, before falling to Nick Potts.

With Yorkshire still needing 56 runs from the final 27 balls, Hasan Ali joined forces with Andrew Tye to swing the momentum back in the hosts’ favour.

The Pakistan pacer played a crucial cameo of 31 off just 12 balls, smashing two fours and three sixes, while Tye struck 32 from 13 deliveries as Yorkshire chased down the target with four balls to spare.

Mohammad Abbas joins Derbyshire on two-year deal

Pakistan Test pacer Mohammad Abbas has agreed a two-year deal with Derbyshire, signing on as one of the county’s overseas players for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

Abbas arrives at Derbyshire with a formidable reputation in English red-ball cricket, having previously represented Leicestershire, Hampshire and most recently Nottinghamshire.

The experienced seamer played a pivotal role in Nottinghamshire’s County Championship triumph last summer, claiming 32 first-class wickets in nine matches at an impressive average of 21.46.

The move will see Abbas reunite with Mickey Arthur, who handed him his Test debut for Pakistan and is now leading Derbyshire’s ambitions from the dugout.

Arthur believes the addition of Abbas could be a defining moment in the club’s push for promotion.

“This is a statement signing for us,” Arthur said. “We’ve beaten a number of Division One counties to sign one of the finest red-ball bowlers around, and we’re absolutely delighted to have Mohammad on board for 2026 and 2027.”

“He’s an exceptional bowler who bowls maidens, builds pressure and takes wickets at a really impressive average. Beyond his skill, his experience will be invaluable for our young players to learn from.”

Since first arriving in 2018, Mohammad Abbas has taken 291 County Championship wickets at a remarkable average of 19.89, establishing himself as one of the most reliable overseas bowlers on the circuit.

His most recent Test appearance for Pakistan came earlier this year, in January.

Expressing his excitement at the move, Abbas said the opportunity to work with Arthur again played a major role in his decision.

“It’s exciting for me to join Derbyshire and work with Mickey Arthur again,” Abbas said. “He’s a fantastic coach, and after hearing his plans for the club, it’s clear we share the same ambition, to be in Division One.

“The team only just missed out on promotion in 2025, so I’m hoping I can contribute with performances that help win a few more games and give our supporters a trophy to celebrate.”

Arthur’s Derbyshire sign Haider Ali for 2023 season

Derbyshire have signed young Pakistan batter Haider Ali for the entire 2023 county season, announced the club on Friday.

The 22-year-old Haider has represented Pakistan in 33 T20Is and two One-Day internationals. He was also a part of the national team in last year’s T20 World Cup, where the Green Shirts finished as runners-up.

“Ali will be available for Derbyshire in all formats during the 2023 season, subject to international commitments, with the powerful right-hander joining Sri Lankan fast bowler, Suranga Lakmal, as an overseas player.” said a Derbyshire statement.

While Haider is yet to make his international debut in the longest format of the game, the club are hopeful to tap his potential in the red-ball as he averages 54.33 in 11 first-class appearances, with three centuries and four half-centuries to his credit.

“Haider is an immensely talented young player who already has a wealth of international experience, which will be key for us in all formats,” said Derbyshire’s head of cricket Mickey Arthur.

“I spoke with him at the T20 World Cup, and again during the Lanka Premier League, and he’s so hungry to come to England prove himself in all formats, that’s exactly the attitude we want in our dressing room.”

Meanwhile, Haider expressed that he was excited to work with Arthur since he was still  “highly regarded within the Pakistan setup”.

“I’ve seen over the last few years how many Pakistan players have improved their game by playing at a high standard in county cricket, and that’s something I think could really help my development,” he said as quoted by Derbyshire.

Derbyshire start the new season with a home County Championship Division Two match against Worcestershire on 6 April.
