Keshav Maharaj claims top spot in ICC ODI Bowling rankings

DUBAI: South Africa’s left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj overtook Indian pace bowler Mohammed Siraj to claim the top spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s ODI Bowling Rankings.

Maharaj is the fourth bowler to claim the coveted top spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Bowling Rankings during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, exhibiting the fierce competition between the bowlers which has made it difficult to hold on to the position.

Keshav Maharaj was placed at second position in last week’s ICC Men’s ODI Bowling Rankings, he then picked up seven wickets in three games, extending his wickets tally to 14 during ICC World Cup 2023.

He is averaging 24.71 in the tournament with a good economy rate of 4.37.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj is only three rating points behind Keshav Maharaj, having picked six wickets in the last three games for India.

Siraj has picked up a total of 12 wickets in 10 games during the ICC World Cup 2023 at 28.83.

India’s top-order batter Shubman Gill is sitting comfortably at the top of ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, followed by Babar Azam, who held on to the position for two years before being dethroned last week.

South Africa’s Quinton de Kock swapped places with Virat Kohli to claim the third spot, followed by Kohli and Indian captain Rohit Sharma at the fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Indian batters Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul also made substantial gains after scoring centuries against the Netherlands last week, with the former jumping five spots to equal 13th alongside Pakistan’s opening batter Fakhar Zaman while KL Rahul jumped to 17th from 24th.

No special treatment for injured captain Bavuma, says South Africa coach

South Africa coach Rob Walter said on Tuesday that injured Temba Bavuma will not receive preferential treatment because he is the team captain.

The 33-year-old batsman hopes to be fit for the ICC World Cup 2023 semi-final against Australia in Kolkata on Thursday after straining his right hamstring against Afghanistan last Friday.

“No one is bigger than the team at the end of the day. That applies to Temba and everyone else,” said Walter after a practice session in the Indian city.

“Being skipper will not give Bavuma extra protection if the injury does not heal sufficiently and inhibits his play.”

Bavuma took part in a floodlit training session at Eden Gardens on Tuesday and did not show any signs of discomfort.

But Walter warned that there are still hurdles the skipper must clear before he can lead South Africa into a match that will decide who faces India or New Zealand in the final.

“We still need to check him out in the high-speed zones as we progress from when the injury happened to the rehabilitation that has taken place during the past 72 hours,” said the coach.

“Each day brings some new elements to test before deciding whether he is ready and match fit to play in the semi-final. The progression has been positive, which is awesome.”

Walter said he is not overly concerned about the modest current form of Bavuma, who has scored 145 runs in seven innings at the global showcase.

“Temba has not scored the runs he would have wanted to at the World Cup. However, when I watch him train and play I sense a big score is just around the corner.

“We are not part of the conversation about Temba being dropped. He is one of our best batters this year.

“That said, he is not undroppable, nor is any other member of the squad. No one is bigger than the team.

“Hopefully, we will be able make a call on Temba before Thursday. In an ideal world, you do not want to wait that long, but I need to give him the best chance to play for his country.”

If Bavuma is ruled out of the showdown with Australia, his place will be taken by Reeza Hendricks, a right-handed batter.

South Africa believe the Kolkata pitch will take spin, and may bring in left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi at the expense of Lungi Ngidi or Gerald Coetzee.

Current form favours South Africa after a 134-run victory over Australia in the pool stage of ICC World Cup 2023, but all four previous semi-final appearances by the Proteas have ended in disappointment.

And two of those exits, in 1999 and 2007, were against Australia.

Rain is forecast for Kolkata on Thursday and Friday, the reserve day, and if both days were washed out, South Africa would progress to the final on net run rate.

Kane Williamson confident ahead of semi-final against India at Wankhede

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said his side’s experience of playing in front of partisan crowds would serve them well when they face hosts India in a blockbuster ICC World Cup 2023 semi-final.

A capacity crowd of over 33,000 is expected at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium — the home ground of India captain Rohit Sharma — for Wednesday’s clash

New Zealand, losing finalists at the last two World Cups but yet to lift the trophy, knocked India out at the semi-final stage in a rain-affected two-day clash in Manchester four years ago.

Bad weather, however, is unlikely to be an issue in Mumbai and while India had plenty of support at Old Trafford, star batsman Williamson knows that it will be nothing compared to the passionate backing they’ll have on Wednesday.

When a reporter told Kane Williamson during a pre-match press conference on Tuesday that the capacity of the Wankhede is 33,108 and “33 of them will be in blue (India’s colour),” he jokingly replied: “There’ll be more than that.”

Williamson, who knows India well from playing in the lucrative Indian Premier League, added: “We’re expecting a fairly blue crowd that will be supporting their team.

“We remember over the years, a number of different crowds that we’ve had that haven’t always been your own fans.

“We have got a small country that doesn’t always fill out the stadiums but you still appreciate the atmosphere it brings.

“Not many people get that opportunity, cricket in India, playing against India in a World Cup semi-final, is special and something to appreciate and look forward to.”

Williamson is particularly glad to be involved after fearing he might not make it to the World Cup before a freak injury threatened to cut short his participation.

After spending nearly seven months out with a serious knee injury, he missed New Zealand’s opening wins over champions England and the Netherlands during the ongoing tournament.

He marked his comeback with 78 not out during an eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Chennai only to suffer a broken left thumb following a wayward throw while running between the wickets.

The 33-year-old then missed several more games before returning with 95 against Pakistan in Bengaluru.

“An interesting journey for sure,” said Kane Williamson.

“From sort of it not being a chance (of playing at the World Cup) to getting close and it becoming a reality and something to target…Then to get back and then break my thumb. It was quite frustrating and testing.”

But a 10-team round-robin event gave Williamson hope he could still feature later on in the tournament.

“I still felt it hadn’t ruled me out, so I was grateful for that and it’s nice to be sitting here.”

India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in a hard-fought ICC World Cup 2023 group match in Dharamsala last month but Williamson played down the impact of that fixture and the 2019 semi-final ahead of Wednesday’s clash.

“They (India) are a side that’s been playing extremely well, but we also know come finals time, everything sort of starts again.”

Kane Williamson was more forthcoming about New Zealand rising star Rachin Ravindra, with the 23-year-old left-handed opener having already scored three centuries at his debut World Cup.

“He’s burst onto the scene and in a big way,” said Williamson.

“It’s not just the volume of runs that he’s achieved so far, but how he’s been scoring them and how it’s been geared towards trying to move the team forward.”

Travis Head calls his injury a ‘blessing in disguise’

Australia opener Travis Head made a late entry into the ICC World Cup 2023 after recovering from a fractured hand but on Tuesday said the injury was a “blessing in disguise”.

Five-time winners Australia take on South Africa in the second semi-final in Kolkata on Thursday where Head will renew his rivalry with fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, whose ball caused the damage.

A Coetzee rising delivery struck Head on the left arm in the third one-day international of Australia’s tour of South Africa in September and scans revealed a fracture.

Head was in danger of missing the World Cup but Australia kept him in the squad until he was fit to play in the team’s sixth league match where he hit a match-winning century against New Zealand.

Reminded about facing Coetzee, who has claimed 18 wickets in seven matches at the tournament, Head said injuries are part and parcel of sport.

“I said to Gerald at the time I’m sure he didn’t mean to hit me in the hand. It was probably aimed a little bit higher than that,” Head, a left-hand batsman, joked.

“But that’s all part of the game. So I take a relaxed approach to all that sort of stuff whether it’s performance or injuries.”

He said: “He did me a favour, I got four weeks at home with the family, so I got refreshed to come back. And hopefully, I can be refreshed and energised and can perform at the back end of the tournament. It might be a blessing in disguise.”

Head smashed a 67-ball 109 in the must-win match against New Zealand but misfired in the next three with scores of 11, 0 and 10.

Travis Head, 29, said his style is not an all-out attack. He is just as content playing the waiting game as well.

“I feel like I try and give myself the best chance to score off balls that I feel like I can and respect the ones in between,” he said.

“I think you have to do that. It’s international cricket, so I don’t think it’s all guns blazing every time.

“So it’s a balancing act. I feel like I’m in a good mindset to give myself the best chance to be as positive as I can be.”

Australia won seven straight matches in the league stage of the ICC World Cup 2023 and remain two wins away from their sixth title.

“I’m sure everyone has thought about that,” Head said. “It hasn’t really been spoken about as a group, but we know what’s at the end of this tournament and what’s up for grabs.”

Travis Head has featured in 62 ODIs for Australia since his debut in 2016 and scored 2,194 runs.

Morne Morkel steps down as Pakistan bowling coach

LAHORE: Former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel has resigned as the bowling coach of the Pakistan Men’s team, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced Monday.

“Morne Morkel has resigned as the bowling coach of the Pakistan Men’s team. The former South Africa fast bowler joined the Pakistan team on a six-month contract in June this year,” said PCB in a statement.

“Morkel’s first assignment with the men’s team was their tour to Sri Lanka for the two-match Test series,” the statement added.

The cricketing body further shared that Morkel’s replacement will be announced in due course.

“Pakistan Cricket Board will announce his replacement in due course. Pakistan’s next assignment is a three-match Test series against Australia scheduled to take place from December 14, 2023, to January 7, 2024, in Australia,” PCB stated.

Notably, Morne Morkel’s resignation came just days after Pakistan were knocked out of the ICC World Cup 2023 from the group stage, failing to make it to the knockout stage.

Pakistan, famous for their lethal pace bowling, failed to do wonders in their go-to department in the ongoing mega event.

In their last league match against defending champions England, Pakistan needed to win by a hefty margin of 287 runs or 260 balls to spare to go past New Zealand’s superior net run-rate, who consequently managed to hold on to their fourth spot in the standings.

Pakistan, while chasing a daunting 338-run target, could get to 30/2 in 6.4 overs, resulting in them bowing out of the semi-final race.

The Green Shirts’ campaign in the ICC World Cup 2023 was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride.

Babar Azam’s men started their World Cup campaign with two victories.

They outclassed the Netherlands by 81 runs in their campaign opener before they pulled off the highest run chase in the history of the ODI World Cup to down Sri Lanka by six wickets.

However, it was a sudden change of fortune for the men in green as they succumbed to a four-match losing streak, their first in the history of the World Cup.

Their four-match losing streak saw them sink to their first-ever loss against Afghanistan in ODIs before losing to South Africa for the first time in a World Cup match in this century.

When it appeared to be done and dusted for the Green Shirts, Babar Azam’s men scripted an astonishing comeback to the ICC World Cup 2023 semi-final race by thrashing Bangladesh by seven wickets and 105 balls to spare.

Pakistan then pulled off another heist when they downed New Zealand by 21 runs as per the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method despite the latter side scoring a mammoth 401/6 in the allotted 50 overs.

Babar Azam returns home after dismal ICC World Cup 2023 performance

LAHORE: Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam landed in Lahore from Dubai in the wee hours of Monday after a dismal performance at the ICC World Cup 2023.

Babar Azam along with some members of the PCB including the team manager reached Lahore from Dubai by a private airline.

The captain of the national team was escorted to his car under strict security. The fans who gathered at the airport chanted slogans in favour of the Pakistan team.

Masses present at the airport raised “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans after seeing the skipper and took selfies with him.

The Babar Azam-led Pakistan side was knocked out of the ICC World Cup 2023 amid their final group stage clash against defending champions England on Saturday.

Virat Kohli takes first ODI wicket after nine years

BENGALURU: Star Indian batter Virat Kohli stunned the cricketing world as he picked up an ODI after nine years during his side’s ICC World Cup 2023 clash against the Netherlands.

While the bottom-ranked side were batting cautiously in their 411-run pursuit, Indian captain Rohit Sharma handed the ball to Virat Kohli.

The right-arm medium pace bowler struck in his second over when a delivery drifting down the leg side, marked the end of Dutch skipper Scott Edwards’ knock.

It was Virat Kohli’s fifth wicket in ODIs and his first since 2014 when he dismissed New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum in Wellington.

His last wicket in international cricket, however, came back in 2016 when he dismissed the West Indian opener Johnson Charles in a high-octane T20 World Cup semi-final.

Virat Kohli had a brief stint with the ball earlier in this World Cup when all-rounder Hardik Pandya limped off the field midway through an over against Bangladesh.

In his usual role for India, Virat Kohli contributed significantly with an anchoring half-century.

The right-handed batter scored 51 in 56 deliveries with the help of five boundaries and a six.

He was one of the five Indian batters, who scored fifty-plus runs against the struggling Dutch bowling attack.

Indian openers Rohit Sharma and top-ranked ODI batter Shubman Gill gave India a flying start with a sensational 100-run partnership.

Gill was the first batter to be perished. He departed after scoring a 32-ball 51, laced with three boundaries and four sixes.

Sharma soon followed him after a 54-ball 61 which included eight boundaries and two sixes.

Virat Kohli then anchored the proceedings for India amid his 71-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer before the former perished soon after reaching his half-century.

Iyer was then joined by KL Rahul and the duo bolstered India’s total past the 400-run mark with brisk centuries.

Shreyas Iyer top-scored for India with an unbeaten 128 in 94 deliveries with the help of 10 boundaries and five sixes.

Rahul, on the other hand, scored 102 in 64 deliveries, peppered with 11 boundaries and four sixes.

India ease past Netherlands to stay unbeaten in World Cup

BENGALURU: Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul’s blistering centuries, paired up with a disciplined bowling show powered India to a thumping 160-run victory over the Netherlands in the 45th ICC World Cup 2023 match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Set to chase a daunting 4110-run target, the Netherlands put up a decent fight with the bat but still fell 160 runs short.

Middle-order batter Teja Nidamanuru spearheaded the Netherlands’ fightback with a brisk half-century but his efforts were not enough to propel his side to the favourites.

He remained the top scorer for the Netherlands with a 39-ball 54, laced with one boundary and six sixes.

Opener Max O’Dowd (30), Colin Ackermann (35) and Sybrand Engelbrecht (45) were the other notable run-getters for the Netherlands while the rest of their batters failed against a relatively easy-going Indian bowling attack.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja bagged two wickets each for India while Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma made one scalp each.

This is India’s fourth-highest ODI total and second-highest total in the ODI World Cup. Their highest ODI total is 418-5 against West Indies, while in World Cup they scored 413-5 against Bermuda in 2007.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma scripted a flying start for his team after winning the toss as he along with Shubman Gill raised 100 runs for the first wicket inside 12 overs.

Shubman Gill scored a quick 32-ball 51, featuring three boundaries and four sixes before Teja Nidamanuru took a sharp catch at boundary off Paul van Meekeren’s bowling to end his entertaining knock.

Rohit Sharma soon followed him back to the dressing room after scoring 61 runs from 54 balls, with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes.

Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer then knitted a 71-run partnership for the third wicket, with the former reaching his 70th ODI half-century before Roelof van der Merwe bowled him, extending the wait for his 50th ODI hundred.

With the scoreboard reading 200, Iyer was joined by KL Rahul and they wreaked havoc on the Netherlands’ bowlers as they scored 208 runs from 128 balls for the fourth wicket, with both batters scoring centuries and lifting India’s total beyond the 400-run landmark.

KL Rahul completed his hundred in 62 balls, making it the fastest hundred by an Indian batter in the ODI World Cups, meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer reached the landmark in 84 balls.

Rahul got out on the penultimate ball of the innings as he was caught by Sybrand Engelbrecht at deep square-leg after playing a blistering knock of 102 runs off 64 balls, featuring 11 boundaries and four sixes.

Suryakumar Yadav took the strike on the final ball of the innings and added two runs as the Indian innings ended at 410-4 from their allocated 50 overs.

Iyer remained unbeaten at 128 runs from 94 deliveries with the help of 10 boundaries and five sixes.

This was the fourth instance in ODI cricket where five batters from the same crossed the 50-run mark in an innings and the first time in a World Cup game.

Bas de Leede picked two wickets for the Netherlands, while Roelof van der Merwe and Paul van Meekeren picked one wicket each.
