Indonesia’s Gede Priandana creates T20I history with five-wicket over

BALI: Indonesia fast bowler Gede Priandana created history on Tuesday by becoming the first player to take five wickets in a single over in a men’s or women’s T20I.

He achieved this feat during the opening T20I against Cambodia, steering Indonesia to a dominant 60-run victory at the Udayana Cricket Ground.

The 28-year-old right-arm quick produced a spell for the ages in the 16th over of Cambodia’s chase of 168, completely dismantling the opposition’s middle and lower order in a dramatic collapse that effectively ended the contest.

Cambodia were still in the hunt at 106 for 5 after 15 overs, but Priandana, bowling his first over of the match, turned the game on its head instantly.

He struck with the first three deliveries to claim a stunning hat-trick, dismissing Shah Abrar Hussain, Nirmaljit Singh and Chanthoeun Rathanak.

After a dot ball, he removed Mongdara Sok and Pel Vennak, conceding just a solitary wide in the over as Cambodia crumbled to be bowled out well short of the target.

With that extraordinary effort, Gede Priandana became the first bowler in T20 international cricket, across both men’s and women’s formats, to claim five wickets in a single over where fall-of-wicket data is officially recorded.

Earlier in the match, Priandana had also contributed with the bat, scoring six runs while opening the innings alongside wicketkeeper-batter Dharma Kesuma.

Kesuma starred with the bat for Indonesia, hammering an unbeaten 110 off 68 balls, an innings that included eight fours and six sixes, to set up a challenging total of 167.

While the five-wicket-over feat has been achieved twice in domestic men’s T20 cricket, by Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Hossain in 2013–14 and Karnataka’s Abhimanyu Mithun in the 2019–20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Priandana’s performance stands alone in the international arena.

Indonesian teenager breaks record for best T20I bowling figures

BALI: Teenage off-spinner Rohmalia Rohmalia of Indonesia created a new record on Thursday when she claimed seven wickets for no runs, the best figures recorded in all T20I cricket.

Making her debut, the 17-year-old’s breakout performance is the best in all T20Is – men’s and women’s.

In the fifth T20I of a bilateral series between Indonesia and Mongolia at Udayana Cricket Ground in Bali, Rohmalia wreaked havoc with her off-spin bowling.

She bowled 20 deliveries, all dot balls, and dismissed seven batters for ducks to achieve record figures.

Set a target of 152, Mongolia crumbled to 24 all out with no batter reaching double figures. Extras accounted for 10 of Mongolia’s runs.

Earlier, Indonesia scored 151 runs with the loss of five wickets in their allocated 20 overs, courtesy of opener Ni Putu Ayu Nanda Sakarini’s innings of 61 runs from 44 balls.

Rohmalia is the third bowler to take seven wickets in a women’s T20I after Argentina’s Alison Stocks (7 for 3) and Netherlands’ Frederique Overdijk (7 for 3).

Indonesia police say 129 people killed after stampede at soccer match

JAKARTA: At least 129 people were killed and around 180 injured at a soccer match in Indonesia after panicked fans were trampled and crushed trying to flee during a riot, police said on Sunday, in what appeared to be one of the world’s worst stadium disasters.

When supporters of the losing home team invaded the pitch in East Java province on Saturday night to express their frustration, officers fired tear gas in an attempt to control the situation, triggering a stampede and cases of suffocation, East Java police chief Nico Afinta told reporters.

“It had gotten anarchic. They started attacking officers, they damaged cars,” Nico said, adding that the crush occurred when fans fled for an exit gate.

Video footage from local news channels showed fans streaming onto the pitch in the stadium in Malang after Arema FC lost to Persebaya Surabaya. Scuffles can be seen, with what appeared to be tear gas in the air.

Images showed people who appeared to have lost consciousness being carried away by other fans.

The head of one of the hospitals in the area treating patients told Metro TV that some of the victims had sustained brain injuries and that the dead included a five-year-old child.

World soccer’s governing body FIFA specifies in its safety regulations that no firearms or “crowd control gas” should be carried or used by stewards or police.

East Java police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether they were aware of such regulations.

Indonesia’s human rights commission planned to investigate security at the ground, including the use of tear gas, its commissioner told Reuters.

The country’s chief security minister, Mahfud MD, said in an Instagram post that the stadium had been filled beyond its capacity. He said 42,000 tickets had been issued for a stadium that is only supposed to hold 38,000 people.

Financial aid would be given to the injured and the families of victims, East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa told reporters.

There have been outbreaks of trouble at matches in Indonesia before, with strong rivalries between clubs sometimes leading to violence among supporters.

Zainudin Amali, Indonesia’s sports minister, told KompasTV the ministry would re-evaluate safety at football matches, including considering not allowing spectators in stadiums.

The Indonesian top league BRI Liga 1 has suspended games for a week and an investigation had been launched, the Football Association of Indonesia said.
