Martin Guptill’s 86* powers Quetta Gladiators to edge Karachi Kings

RAWALPINDI: Experienced opener Martin Guptill played a magnificent 86-run knock under pressure and held his nerves calm to bolster Quetta Gladiators to edge Karachi Kings by four wickets in a low-scoring thriller.

The Gladiators completed the 165-run pursuit on the second-last delivery of the innings at the back of a scintillating 86-run unbeaten knock by Guptill.

The Gladiators were off to a poor start to the run chase as young opener Omair Bin Yousuf, failed to make an impact on debut and scored just eight off six deliveries.

All-rounder Mohammad Nawaz was promoted to bat at number three but failed to justify the move as his stay at the crease also remained brief. He could score 15 off 14 before falling victim to Musa Khan.

The Gladiators then lost three more wickets in quick succession as Iftikhar Ahmed (4), Najibullah Zadran (1) and Umar Akmal (9) perished cheaply; resulting in their side slip to 63/5 in the 10th over.

Following the slump, Guptill and Sarfaraz Ahmed began Gladiators’ recovery in the run chase before the former switched gears and started to dominate the Kings’ bowlers.

The pair brought the Gladiators back in control with their 95-run partnership before a mixup on the second delivery of the final over drew curtains on Sarfaraz’s gritty 25-ball 29.

Sarfaraz’s dismissal glimmered a ray of hope for the Kings but Dwaine Pretorius wasted no time and steered his side over the line with a crucial cameo of 10 runs in just three deliveries.

Guptill carried his bat all the way through and top-scored for the Gladiators with a sensational 56-ball 86, hitting nine boundaries and four sixes.

Tabraiz Shamsi led the bowling attack for the Kings with two wickets, while Yamin, James Fuller and Musa made one scalp each.

Put into bat first, the Kings managed to accumulate a decent total on the board at the back of an anchoring fifty by Rossington, followed by a late onslaught by Imad Wasim and Yamin.

Earlier, the Kings got off to an unwanted start as the side lost their hard-hitting opener, Matthew Wade, for a golden duck on the first delivery of the innings; courtesy of a beautiful outswinger by Naseem Shah.

Tayyab Tahir then looked to settle things down as he stitched a crucial 25-run partnership with Rossington but Aimal Khan struck in his first over to send him back to the pavilion.

With Kings losing two wickets in the first powerplay, Rossington stood up for his team and put on a gritty third-wicket partnership with Qasim Akram.

Rossington was the core aggressor of the 33-run stand while Qasim was holding his ground firm until Aimal dismissed him to draw third success for the Gladiators. Qasim could score eight off 10 deliveries.

The Kings then dealt a major blow in the 12th over when Mohammad Nawaz dismissed experienced Shoaib Malik, who scored 13 off 15.

Kings’ in-form skipper Imad then joined Rossington in the middle and scripted an astounding recovery for his side as the pair took the Gladiators’ bowlers to the cleaners.

Naveen-ul-Haq, however, provided Gladiators with a much-needed breakthrough in the 17th over when he removed Rossington with a short-pitch delivery.

The wicketkeeper batter top-scored for the Kings with a 45-ball 69, which featured 10 boundaries and a six.

The Kings then lost another wicket in the next over when Naseem castled James Fuller with a ruthless yorker and pushed the opposition into trouble.

However, an astonishing seventh-wicket partnership between Yamin and Imad, bolstered Kings to a respectable total of 164/6 as the pair dominated the Gladiators’ bowlers at the backend.

The duo raised brisk 33 runs in the last 15 balls of the innings with Yamin leading the charge with his magnificent unbeaten cameo of 23 in 11 deliveries, laced up with a boundary and two sixes.

Imad, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on a 20-ball 30, which included three boundaries and a six.

Naseem and Aimal led the bowling attack of the Gladiators with two wickets each, while Nawaz and Naveen picked up a wicket each.

Sarfaraz backs ‘talented’ Umar Akmal despite consistent failures

KARACHI: Quetta Gladiators’ captain has put his weight behind Umar Akmal despite his consecutive batting failures in the ongoing PSL season 8.

“Umar Akmal is a very talented cricketer,” said Sarfaraz in a post-match press conference after Quetta Gladiators beat Karachi Kings on Saturday.

“Every player has to go through such good and bad phases,” he said about Akmal who scored 11 and 4, respectively in the first two matches of the PSL 8. “If he can spend a bit more time on the crease, it will definitely help us.”

Talking about his hard-fought win last night, Sarfaraz gave full credit to his fast bowlers for drifting the game away from Karachi Kings in the death overs.

“Credit goes to Naseem and Hasnain, the way they bowled 18th and 19th over. We played superbly with both bat and ball in the last five overs of each inning,” he said.

When asked whether he would make any changes to the team after consecutive batting failure, Gladiators’ captain believed that their batting combination looked perfect and he would rather give some time to his batters to settle in.

“Out top-order is known for playing aggressive cricket. We have given them the plan according to their strengths. As you all know, the way Jason Roy played last year. He and others will definitely make a comeback in the upcoming matches,” he maintained.

Quetta will next play Peshawar Zalmi on Monday at National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi.

Imad vows fightback after unwanted PSL 8 start

KARACHI: Karachi Kings’ captain Imad Wasim expressed optimism to steer his team to the playoffs of the Pakistan Super League season 8 despite an undesired start in the tournament.

“We still have seven matches in our hand before the playoffs,” he said in a post-match media talk after Karachi Kings lost their third consecutive match of the PSL 8 on Saturday.

“Our focus now is to win our upcoming matches and make a comeback. Good teams make comebacks in tough times. We will try our best to qualify for playoffs.”

He revealed Karachi Kings’ desperate search for their first win in the tournament and an optimal team combination, saying once they get on the winning ways, their chances to qualify will automatically improve.

“We have matchwinners in the team, we just have to figure out a combination,” he said.

Earlier, Martin Guptill scripted a phenomenal comeback for the Quetta Gladiators as he made the first century of the PSL 8 to help Quetta Gladiators edge Karachi Kings by six runs.

“We leaked too many runs in the last overs,” said Imad while crediting Guptill for taking the game away from the Karachi Kings.

“We played poor cricket,” he accepted. “We made mistakes which cost us in all three matches. We played well in phases but couldn’t finish it off well,” he said.

When asked whether he was under pressure after consecutive defeats, Karachi Kings’ captain replied in negation and assured that he would not give up till the very last game.

Kings will next face arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars in a blockbuster clash on Sunday at National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi.

Malik’s fifty goes in vain as Gladiators edge Kings in nail-biter

KARACHI: Shoaib Malik played a gritty 71-run knock in the tense run chase but failed short of trumping Martin Guptill’s century as Quetta Gladiators managed to edge Karachi Kings by six runs in a Pakistan Super League (PSL) eight thriller.

Set to chase 169, the Kings fell just six short of glory as they finished at 162/5 despite a valiant 71-run knock by experienced Malik.

The Kings got off to a frustrating start to the run chase as the home side lost three quick wickets inside the powerplay that dented their march to glory early on with James Vince, who appeared solid with also perishing for a 14-ball 22.

Following the early slump, wicketkeeper Matthew Wade and Shoaib Malik anchored the run chase as the duo added 35 runs to the total before Mohammad Hasnain castled the former to break the crucial partnership. Wade could score 15 off 19.

The Kings then dealt with another major blow as Hasnain struck again in the same over and removed Imad Wasim on five.

Meanwhile, Malik carried on his retaliation and was superbly supported by young Irfan Khan Niazi but some tight bowling by Naseem and Hasnain in the 18th and 19th barred the pair from steering their side to glory despite an expensive last over by Odean Smith, who went for 17 runs.

Malik remained the top-scorer for the Kings with 71 off just 49 deliveries and smashed nine boundaries including a six.

Hasnain led the bowling attack for the Gladiators with 2/29 while Naseem, Smith and Qais Ahmed made one scalp each.

Put into bat first, the Gladiators managed to post a decent 168/7 in the allotted 20 overs at the back of a scintillating century by their opener Guptill.

Batting first, the visitors got off to a poor start as Kings captain Imad ran through their top order by picking up three quick wickets including two in the first over.

Gladiators’ captain Sarfaraz Ahmed attempted to script recovery amid his brief partnership with Guptill but failed as he fell victim to Aamer Yamin on the first delivery after the power-play and could score a mere five off 11.

With the side in heaps of trouble at 23/4, Guptill joined hands with in-form Iftikhar Ahmed and anchored the innings with a gritty 69-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Kings’ experienced pacer Mohammad Amir then ceased the budding partnership in the 15th over as he deceived Iftikhar Ahmed with a short-pitch delivery. The right-handed batter scored 32 off 27 deliveries, hitting three boundaries.

Following Iftikhar’s dismissal, Guptill launched a counter-attack on the Kings’ bowlers and powered his side to a competitive total with little to no help from the other end before perishing on the final delivery off Yamin.

Guptill top-scored with 117 off just 67 balls, laced with 12 boundaries and five sixes while Iftikhar (32) remained the only other notable run-getter for the Gladiators.

The rest of the Gladiators’ batters seemed hapless against the Kings’ bowlers as they could not amass the double figures.

Skipper Imad led the bowling attack for the Kings with 3/16, followed by Yamin’s 3/37 while Amir made one scalp.

Khurram shines with four as Gladiators manage to beat Kings by 23 runs

LAHORE: Quetta Gladiators’ pacer – Khurram Shehzad picked four wickets to help his side beat Karachi Kings by 23 runs in the 28th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7, here on Sunday.

Set to chase 167, the Kings fell short of 23 runs; handing a comprehensive victory by 23 runs to the Gladiators.

Kings’ openers – Babar Azam and Joe Clarke provided a solid start to the side; putting on a brilliant 87-runs partnership before Babar walked back to the pavilion in the 11th over. The top-ranked T20I batter scored 36 off 34 deliveries with the help of three boundaries and a six.

Following his departure, Sharjeel Khan joined Clarke in the middle and started to sail the ball all over the park but could not continue for long as he departed after scoring a quickfire 16 off just seven deliveries.

Following Sharjeel’s departure, the side began to lose wickets at an alarming rate as their top-scorer Clarke also perished after scoring 52 off 39 balls; smashing four boundaries and two sixes. As a result, the side finished at 143-8 in the allotted 20 overs.

For the Gladiators, Khurram starred; taking four wickets, while Naseem claimed two. Mohammad Irfan and Ashir Qureshi, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

After opting to bat first against the Kings, the Gladiators finished their first innings at 166-4 in the allotted 20 overs.

Coming out to bat, the Gladiators’ openers Jason Roy and Will Smeed failed to provide a delightful start to their side as Usman Shinwari managed to break the opening pair in the third over as Smeed departed after scoring 10.

With the side at 21-1 in three overs, Roy and James Vince provided an anchored partnership to settle things down for the Gladiators. The pair recorded a brilliant 90-runs partnership but remained a touch slow in the proceedings.

Vince, who was struggling to get going, looked to accelerate his innings but fell short to Lewis Gregory in the 13th over. The right-handed batter could score 29 off 24 balls with the help of three boundaries and a six.

His countryman, Roy on the other hand, kept going and went on to score his half-century while the side soon after lost another wicket as Umar Akmal walked back to the pavilion after scoring a mere two.

Kings’ bowlers then delivered tight bowling in the death overs as Roy and his newly joined partner Iftikhar Ahmed remained unable to go big and bolster the score. In the 19th over, Roy also made his way back to the pavilion after scoring 82 off 64 balls, laced with 11 boundaries, while Iftikhar remained unbeaten with his 21.

For the Kings, Imad Wasim, Mir Hamza, Gregory, and Shinwari bagged one wicket apiece.
