Two Pakistan legends named in Lockie Ferguson’s all-time Top Five Test Pacers

New Zealand cricketer Lockie Ferguson has revealed his top five Test bowlers of all time, including Pakistan’s Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar.

Ferguson, speaking to an Indian outlet, highlighted his admiration for legendary quicks known for their pace and aggression.

His list also features Australia’s Mitchell Johnson, New Zealand’s Shane Bond, and West Indies great Curtly Ambrose, but notably, no Indian bowler.

“Shane Bond, Mitchell Johnson, Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram and Curtly Ambrose,” Lockie Ferguson said, when asked about the bowlers he rated most highly.

Wasim Akram retired in 2003, but his legacy still continues to earn global recognition.

Just recently, former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock slotted him at No. 7 in his all-time left-handers’ XI, which also included Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir and India’s Ravindra Jadeja.

Acclaimed as two of Pakistan’s deadliest fast bowlers, Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar are celebrated for their sheer pace, swing, and ability to dominate batting line-ups, earning them recognition by Lockie Ferguson.

Wasim Akram, often called the “Sultan of Swing,” remains the second-highest wicket-taker in ODIs with 502 wickets in 356 matches, alongside 414 wickets in 104 Tests.

Shoaib Akhtar, the “Rawalpindi Express,” claimed 178 wickets in 46 Tests and 247 wickets in 163 ODIs.

He still holds the record for the fastest delivery in cricket history, a blistering 161.3 km/h (100.23 mph) against England in 2003.

‘I was surprised’: New Zealand pacer recalls MS Dhoni’s 2019 semi-final knock

New Zealand speedster Lockie Ferguson has shared his thoughts on former India captain MS Dhoni knock in the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup.

Chasing a challenging target of 240, India were in all sorts of trouble at 71-5 IN Manchester.

Nevertheless, Dhoni steadied the Indian innings in the crucial encounter, bringing the total to 178-6 in 44 overs.

However, the stalwart’s batting in the last phase of the innings came under scrutiny and sparked debate among cricket pundits.

With 52 runs required of 31 balls, Dhoni had scored 10 runs of Ferguson’s over; however, he decided to leave the last ball of the over with the required rate mounting.

During an interview on an Indian sports platform, Lockie Ferguson recalled the moment and expressed at Dhoni’s decision to leave the ball during such a crucial time.

“I can’t remember what they were needing to chase at the time, but I knew they had to score a few runs. The plan was to bowl and see if MS would undercut it, and he left it. So I was surprised because naturally, when you’re bowling, you’re trying to restrict runs, then it’s nice when a batter leaves it,” he said.

“But I think the next over, the first ball, I tried again, and he just got it over the boundary for six. So the plan almost worked the second time as well. But it was nice to get him out that game and, of course, get across the line in the semi-final,” he added.

Eventually, MS Dhoni was run out courtesy of a direct hit from Martin Guptill after scoring 50 off 70 balls, with India requiring 24 runs off nine deliveries.

As a result, the Men in Blue were knocked out of the tournament, falling 18 runs short of the target.

It is worth noting that the semi-final match against New Zealand turned out to be the final game for MS Dhoni in the Indian jersey—the captain who led India to victory in the 2011 World Cup.

Star New Zealand pacer doubtful for tri-nation ODI series, Champions Trophy 2025

Star New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson is suffering from a hamstring injury and his participation in the upcoming tri-nation ODI series as well as the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 remains uncertain.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is awaiting the results of his scans for the hamstring injury he sustained while playing for the Desert Vipers in the ILT20 on February 5. He was unable to bowl the final ball of his spell and left the field due to the injury.

“Just a little hamstring issue, unfortunate. Tough night; wish I could’ve bowled the last ball,” said Ferguson after the match.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead stated on Friday that the side was waiting on the results of the pacer’s scans ahead of the opening match of the tri-nation ODI series against Pakistan.

“Lockie had a scan yesterday [Thursday] in the UAE. We’ve got the images here and [we are] waiting for our radiologist to give us a report on the extent of it,” the New Zealand coach said.

“Small hamstring injury, by the look of it, so we’re just waiting on a timeline of advice around that before we make a decision on whether Lockie travels here [Pakistan] or whether we do have to replace him for the Champions Trophy 2025,” he added.

New Zealand suffer major blow ahead of Sri Lanka ODIs

New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out of the ODI series against Sri Lanka with a leg injury, days after taking a hat-trick against the same opposition.

Ferguson went off for treatment straight after becoming the sixth New Zealander to take a T20I hat-trick during his second over in Sunday’s series-levelling win in Dambulla.

Seamer Adam Milne replaces the 33-year-old white-ball specialist and will join the squad in Dambulla ahead of Wednesday’s first ODI of a three-match series.

“We’re gutted for Lockie [Ferguson],” said New Zealand coach Gary Stead. “He showed in the space of just two overs what an asset he is with the ball and he’s also brought a lot of leadership to this group.”

“He’ll be a big miss heading into an important ODI series for us. We’re hopeful his recovery will be short and he’ll be back out on the field in no time.

“Adam [Milne] is a like-for-like replacement who brings genuine pace and plenty of international experience, so we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the group.”

The second and third ODIs between Sri Lanka and New Zealand will be played in Pallekele on November 17 and 19.

MLC 2024: Lockie Ferguson stars as Washington Freedom edge past Seattle Orcas

DALLAS: Heinrich Klaasen’s half-century went in vain as Lockie Ferguson took four wickets to guide Washington Freedom to victory against Seattle Orcas in the eighth match of the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 at Grand Prairie Stadium on Thursday.

Washington Freedom inserted Seattle Orcas into bat first and Saurabh Netravalkar provided the first breakthrough as he sent Nauman Anwar back with six runs on the board.

Quinton de Kock (24) then knitted a cautious 28-run stand with Ryan Rickelton (4) before Ferguson dismissed them in back-to-backs, reducing Orcas to 44-3 in 7.5 overs.

Klaasen then struck a 30-ball 51 with the help of four boundaries and three sixes, but could not get any support from the other end as the team bundled out for 124 in 19.4 overs.

Ferguson returned with bowling figures of 4-26, while Netravalkar claimed three wickets.

In response, Washington Freedom lost Travis Head on the second ball of their chase with Imad Wasim taking the prized wicket.

Rachin Ravindra scored 26 off 16 but Seattle Orcas bowlers picked wickets at crucial times to reduce Washington Freedom to 64-5.

However, Lahiru Milantha (33) and Obus Pienaar (30) constructed an unbeaten 63-run stand to ensure a thrilling last-over victory for Washington Freedom.

Nandre Burger took two wickets for Orcas while Imad Wasim, Cameron Gannon and Harmeet Singh managed one each.

Washinton Freedom are comfortable sitting in first place in the MLC 2024 points table with an unbeaten record in three games, while Seattle Orcas are lying at the bottom with two points.

T20 World Cup 2024: New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson sets unique record

TAROUBA: New Zealand’s speedster Lockie Ferguson etched his name into the records book by bowling the best bowling figures in Men’s T20I in his side’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 fixture against Papua New Guinea (PNG).

Ferguson was breathing fire in New Zealand’s last match in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 as he picked up three wickets and did not concede a single run.

He is the only second bowler in the history of cricket to bowl four maidens in a T20 Internationals after Canada’s captain Saad Bin Zafar.

New Zealand pacer Ferguson likely to rule out of T20I Tri-series

CHRISTCHURCH: New Zealand’s camp has been rocked by another massive blow as their speedster Lockie Ferguson is likely to miss the entirety of the ongoing T20I Tri-series involving Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Ferguson, who is coping with a slight abdominal ailment, is questionable for the current series, which further hinders New Zealand, which was already missing the services of Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner due to injuries.

His injury dealt a serious setback to the team’s bowling unit, which is already concerned about the health of key pacer Adam Milne.

As a result, the Blackcaps are relying only on their experienced duo of Tim Southee and Trent Boult as they are the only renowned bowlers in their lineup.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead termed Ferguson’s injury ‘not serious’ but will be treated with care in order to regain complete fitness ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup later this month.

“Lockie has a little ab injury at the moment. We’re just managing just that and the most important thing is we get to the start of the World Cup and Lockie is ready to go. He’s a very, very important cog in our bowling line-up. Unfortunately for him, he missed last year’s World Cup with the injury he had then.”

“I mean we are mindful of it and we want to make sure that he’s right and ready for those early games in the World Cup. There is that chance [of him missing the entire tri-series]. We will just see how he responds to treatment over the next few days,” Stead said in an official statement.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan thrashed New Zealand by six wickets in the second match of the ongoing tri-series and firmed their top spot in the standings. The two sides will meet again on Tuesday.
