Wasim Akram questions Shadab Khan’s decision to bat in lower-order

Former captain Wasim Akram has raised questions over Shadab Khan’s decision to bat at number seven during Islamabad United’s match against Multan Sultans in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

Akram, while speaking during The Pavillion, expressed disappointment over Islamabad United’s captain coming to bat in the lower order despite showing good form in the last match.

Shadab Khan came in to bat at number three during the opening PSL 9 game against Lahore Qalandars and led his team to victory with a blistering half-century.

However, in yesterday’s match, he came in to bat at number seven and scored a meagre 11 runs from nine balls before his team bundled out at 144.

“When you have a captain who is in form and scored 74 in 41 balls in the previous match, why didn’t he come in to bat at three or four?” Akram questioned.

“He [Shadab] said in the post-match press conference that the wicket was a bit difficult which is why I wanted to send in a proper batter.

“I hope that was a language barrier because if that’s the case it means that he will come out to bat early when the pitch is easy but send anyone else if that’s not the case.”

For the unversed, Multan Sultans defeated Islamabad United by five wickets courtesy of Reeza Hendricks’s second consecutive half-century.

Reeza Hendricks half-century guides Multan Sultans to ease past Islamabad United

MULTAN: Reeza Hendricks scored his second consecutive half-century to guide Multan Sultans to a five-wicket win over Islamabad United in the fifth match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 at Multan Cricket Stadium.

Multan Sultans, while chasing a meagre target of 145, lost Dawid Malan in the first over as Naseem Shah shattered his stumps.

However, captain Mohammad Rizwan and Reeza Hendricks’s 71-run stand ensured smooth progress for the home team until Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan spoiled the party.

Khan’s leg-break thuds onto Rizwan’s back-pad, prompting a huge appeal and the umpire giving that out.

The batter reviewed the decision, but to no avail and had to walk back after a responsible knock of 43 runs from 33 balls featuring six boundaries and two sixes.

Hendricks continued his good form and top-scored for the Sultans with his second half-century.

He struck seven boundaries including one six on his way to 58 off 46 to put his team in a comfortable position before Tymal Mills sent him back to the pavilion.

With run-a-ball required, Naseem Shah removed Khushdil Shah to force a late comeback for Islamabad United.

However, Iftikhar Ahmed and David Willey held on to their nerves, chasing the total on the penultimate ball.

Shah led the bowling charts for the United with figures of 2-27, while Imads Wasim, Mills and Khan managed one wicket each.

Earlier, Multan Sultans opted to bowl first and struck early with two quick wickets, reducing Islamabad United to 14-2 in 3.4 overs.

Agha Salman and Jordan Cox then joined hands to help the visitors recover after early blows with a solid partnership of 68 runs from 48 balls.

Cox was the chief contributor to the partnership with a 28-ball 41, laced with two boundaries as many sixes before Usama Mir got him lbw while attempting a switch hit.

Salman remained unfazed at his end, while Azam Khan came and gone after scoring 13 off 10 with a boundary and six.

Abbas Afridi castled Imad Wasim in the next over to further slip the United to 105-5 in 14 overs before captain Shadab Khan joined Salman.

Khan and Salman raised a 35-run stand to push the team’s total to 140, however, Afridi dismissed both batters in a span of two deliveries to halt the recovery for the visitors.

Salman top-scored with an anchoring innings of 52 off 43, with the help of three boundaries and two sixes.

Mohammad Ali bowled the last over which saw the final three wickets falling, with Naseem Shah getting run out on the last ball to finish Islamabad United’s innings at 144.

Afridi and Ali returned with bowling figures of 3-29 and 3-19 respectively, while Mir claimed two wickets.

Catherine Dalton becomes first female coach in PSL

KARACHI: Former Irish cricketer Catherine Dalton became the first female coach in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) history as she joined Multan Sultans as fast-bowling coach, ESPN Cricinfo reported on Tuesday.

Dalton also became the first female fast-bowling coach of any top-level men’s side. The official announcement of her appointment will be announced later today.

Catherine Dalton, 30, born in England, acquired Irish nationality in 2015 and later went on to represent them in four WODIs and as many WT20Is.

She has visited Pakistan twice and also worked with a number of local pacers, including Mohammad Ilyas, Sameen Gul, and Arshad Iqbal, as well as a number of Under-19 athletes.

Notably, Catherine Dalton is an England Cricket Board (ECB)-certified Level 3 Advanced Coach, having previously held coaching positions in the national fast-bowling academy in the UK and the Ultimate Pace Foundation in India.

“Having worked in Pakistan with some of the Multan Sultan players on two previous visits, I am really thrilled to be officially joining up with the franchise at the PSL,” Dalton told ESPNcricinfo.

“It’s not lost on me the ground-breaking moment for a female fast-bowling coach to be working in a major men’s T20 franchise. I am very humbled by the opportunity and cannot wait to hopefully help make a difference on multiple levels.

Multan Sultans’ owner Ali Tareen expressed her pleasure in acquiring the services of Catherine Dalton as his team’s fast-bowling coach.

“Catherine has been part of our player-development programme for almost five years now. I have seen how she has improved players first hand. I always knew she would become a fast-bowling coach at a high level,” Ali Tareen said.

“And I am so glad that her first opportunity came at the Sultans,” he added.

It is worth mentioning here that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), confirmed last month that the ninth edition of the PSL will run from February 8 to March 24.

Dahani shrugs off injury, rejoins Sultans’ squad ahead of PSL 8 Final

LAHORE: Right-arm pacer Shahnawaz Dahani has recovered from his injury and rejoined Multan Sultans’ squad ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season eight final, scheduled on March 18.

According to the details, the Sultans got a major relief ahead of the all-important final as their leading pacer Dahani rejoined the squad on Thursday.

Taking to Twitter, Dahani expressed his pleasure in rejoining the squad and thanked his franchise for taking care of him during his recovery from the injury.

“Alhamdullilah! I am very happy to be back with Multan Sultans & my team-mates. Thank you Haider Azhar bhai for taking care of me like a brother during all this process of recovery. And thank you all for lovely welcome,” he wrote.

Dahani fractured his right-hand index finger after he was hit by a shot from Sikandar Raza, amid his side’s opening match against Lahore Qalandars.

It is pertinent to mention that Dahani’s Sultans qualified for the PSL 8 final with a dominating 86-run victory over defending champions Lahore Qalandars.

The former champions now either take Qalandars or Peshawar Zalmi in the final, which has been rescheduled to Saturday (March 18).

Fast bowler Ilyas has replaced injured Dahani in the Multan Sultan squad, confirmed Pakistan Cricket Board in a media release on Wednesday.

Taking to Twitter, Multan Sultans said that the pacer Dahani fractured the index finger of his right hand due to which he was ruled out of the ongoing season.

Dahani was part of Multan Sutlan’s playing XI during their one-run defeat against Lahore Qaladnars in the PSL opening match on Monday.

Table-toppers Sultans, United to lock horns today

The stage is set for the top of the table clash of the seventh Pakistan Super League (PSL) with the topper – Multan Sultans taking on the second on the list, Islamabad United in the eighth match at National Stadium Karachi.

The Sultans have been in exceptional form as the defending champions remained unbeaten in all their three outings in this year’s PSL so far. The side will be relying heavily on the in-form opening batter and the tournament’s top-scorer – Shan Masood, who has already won two Players of the match awards.

The ICC T20I Player of the Year and Sultans’ captain – Mohammad Rizwan will also be a player to watch despite his rare failure against Quetta Gladiators in the last night’s match.

Furthermore, the Sultans will also be backing themselves heavily as the defending champions became the first team to defend a total in the PSL 7.

The United, however, were also off to a flying start as the two-time champions crushed Peshawar Zalmi in their opening match. United openers may play an important role in the side’s triumph since Paul Stirling and Alex Hales are in red hot form.

Stirling, who scored a berserk 57 off only 25 balls against Zalmi, would be the player to watch for the 2016 and 2018 champions.

HEAD TO HEAD

The two sides have come face to face nine times, with the United emerging victorious five times, while Sultans are just one short with four. In the last five outings, however, United have won three while Sultans managed to win two.
